How To Test Is Candidate Emotionally Intelligent

A good candidate is simple to identify; all you need to do islook at their qualifications and work history. Finding a strong candidate,however, is a different matter.

Because the best employees possess not only the necessarytechnical skills but also the necessary emotional skills, finding top talent isa little more difficult than simply looking through a CV.

In fact, the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs report statedthat by 2020, the top ten most in-demand employee skills will include emotionalintelligence (EQ). In order to compete in the age of artificial intelligence(AI) and the dynamic workplace, employees will need to develop skills likeemotional intelligence.

But how can emotional intelligence be tested in job applicants?It is slightly trickier than evaluating a candidate's writing abilities. Hereare four tips to help to hire managers to determine if a candidate has a highlevel of emotional intelligence.

‍1.Ask for the candidate’s references.

Former coworkers or superiors may be able to shed light on a candidate's character. Yes, they can respond to typical inquiries about the applicant's work performance or strengths and weaknesses. However, it would be preferable to find out how the candidate manages both themselves and others.

Inquire about the following:

How did the candidate react after making a mistake?

How well did the candidate get along with the other candidates, on a scale of 1 to 10? What do you think caused that?

What inspires this candidate, in your opinion?

You can learn more about a candidate's sense of responsibility, interpersonal skills, and personal motivations by probing them with these questions. You'll get a sense of the potential candidate's future behavior from this.

2.Observe how the candidate interacts outside of the official interview.

You can determine a candidate's emotional intelligence by asking the front desk agent, the receptionist, or even the elevator operator. Was the applicant polite and approachable or rude and haughty? Did they speak to the receptionist or the office cleaners? Emotional IQ is demonstrated by the ability to respectfully converse with anyone in the office, regardless of their position.

Walt Bettinger, the CEO of Charles Schwab, invites potential hires to a breakfast meeting and instructs the restaurant to purposefully mess up their order to test the candidates. Bettinger claims he observes their reactions. The candidate's emotional intelligence is demonstrated by how they act toward the wait staff, whether they are angry or sympathetic.

By first giving a candidate a short-term contract, you can evaluate them to see how they perform on the job. This method of evaluating a candidate's soft skills before hiring them full-time is more unbiased. This enables you to evaluate whether they possess the necessary skills, fit in well with your culture, and exhibit high emotional intelligence.

In place of a job interview, some employers ask applicants to attend a "job audition," where they must perform the duties of the position they are applying for to be hired. They practice performing the actual work they would be doing.

Working with someone daily will give you personality insights that you can't get from their resumes, interviews, or references, according to Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Harvard Business Review.

4.Use personality tests.

Using job simulations and role-playing exercises to gauge a candidate's problem-solving and interpersonal skills, personality assessments can give recruiters an idea of the candidate's personality and EQ.

The 20-minute online test Koru uses machine learning and analytics to determine whether the applicant you're considering hiring might be a good fit for the business. It is marketed as "predictive hiring," where the test evaluates various personality traits so you can learn more about your applicant's emotional intelligence.

Additionally, you can develop your own tests, similar to how Amtrak has a 104-question test called the Amtrak Culture Fit Assessment. The purpose of the test is to determine whether a candidate is likely to act in a manner consistent with the Amtrak culture.

A personality test can be a useful tool for assessing a candidate's moral character, but it must be used in conjunction with feedback from reference checks and interviews.

Prior to the pandemic, the 650,000 commuters who passed through Penn Station every day were more likely to encounter dark, claustrophobic tunnels and rats scampering across subway tracks than world-class art. When travelers return to the New York City transit hub, however, they’ll find not only artistic masterpieces, but soaring skylights and a sleek, spacious waiting area reminiscent of the station’s demolished predecessor.

Dubbed the Moynihan Train Hall, the $1.6 billion, 255,000-square-foot space—located across the street from the main station in the historic James A. Farley Post Office—will serve as a central hub for Amtrak and Long Island Railroad passengers. Highlights of the venue, which is set to open January 1, include vaulted, 92-foot-high ceilings; art installations by Kehinde Wiley, Stan Douglas, and creative duo Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset; a 6- by 12-foot suspended clock; and a one-acre sky-lit atrium.

“Is it grand? Yes. Is it bold? Yes, because that is the spirit of New York and that is the statement we want to make to our visitors, to our children and to future generations,” says Governor Andrew Cuomo, who unveiled the space Wednesday, in a statement. “As dark as 2020 has been, this new hall will bring the light, literally and figuratively, for everyone who visits this great city.”

Speaking with the New York Times’ Dionne Searcey, Wiley, who is perhaps best known for his presidential portrait of Barack Obama, describes the inspiration behind his contribution to the hall: Go, a hand-painted, stained-glass ceiling triptych that depicts young, black New Yorkers break dancing.

“So much of what goes on in ceiling frescoes are people expressing a type of levity and religious devotion and ascendancy,” the artist tells the Times. “For me the movement and space made so much more sense thinking about ways bodies twirl in break dancing.”

Another artwork installed in the space, The Hive by Elmgreen and Dragset, mounts 91 upside-down buildings “on the ceiling like glowing, [nine]-foot-tall stalactites,” as Shaye Weaver writes for Time Out. Featuring 72,000 LED lights and six color-changing segments, the sculpture’s title reflects the collaborative nature of city life.

“It’s about a huge collaboration in order to make everyone survive,” Dragset explains to the Times.

The hall’s third public art installation, Douglas’ Penn Station’s Half Century, consists of nine oversized photographic panels documenting overlooked but significant moments in the transit hub’s history. To capture these scenes, the Canadian artist combined photos of contemporary actors posing in period costumes with digital renderings of the now-defunct station’s interior.

“With a cinematic quality, each scene revives history in uncanny detail, revealing this architectural landmark as a grand theater for the millions of human dramas that animate civic spaces and endow them with meaning,” says the Public Art Fund, which oversaw the three installations, on its website.

The Moynihan Train Hall’s opening marks the culmination of a decades-long push to convert the Farley building into an extension of Penn Station, reports Christina Goldbaum in a separate article for the Times. Proponents of the plan cited the need to expand the station, which serves three times as many riders as its architects anticipated, and a desire to atone for the original building’s much-criticized demolition in the 1960s. But critics argued that the proposal ignored the needs of subway riders, as the post office is located a sizable walking distance from the station’s subway lines.

A grand structure outfitted with quarried travertine and a 138-foot-high ceiling, the original Penn Station opened in 1910. Locals lauded it as an architectural marvel, but after the Great Depression, the building fell into a state of disrepair. Railroad executives eventually decided to sell the rights to the property and move a downsized version of the station underground.

The building’s untimely demise had unexpected consequences: As Michael Kimmelman wrote for the Times in 2019, “The historic preservation movement, which rose from the vandalized station’s ashes, was born of a new pessimism.”

Like the razed Penn Station, the nearby Farley building’s 1912 Beaux-Arts edifice was designed by architecture firm McKim Mead & White. Senator Daniel P. Moynihan first introduced plans to transform the space into an extension of the station in the early 1990s; as Jim Dwyer reported for the Times in 2016, the then-president of the New York City Transit Authority responded to Moynihan’s proposal by arguing that resources should be allocated to more pressing concerns, like repairing 80-year-old track switches.

In 2016, after decades of delays, Cuomo announced plans to renovate the station and expand into the Farley building. Though the newly completed revamp won’t solve many of the city’s transit problems—including track congestion and decrepit train tunnels—officials say it will help improve overcrowding and pave the way for future infrastructure projects.

“[The hall] speaks to the brighter days ahead when we will be able to congregate, to pass one another and to share the same space free of fear,” Cuomo tells the Times’ Searcey. “It promises renewal and rebirth of civic life in New York, and points to the opportunity ahead.”

Does this movie have a good name?

The Christmas Train has the same name as the book it’s based on, about a late December train journey from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles. It’s a boring name, but at least it makes this particular movie easy to identify for anyone who has to remember the difference between twenty or so of the Hallmark Christmas 2017 crop i.e. me.

Are we located in a small, picturesque, snow-covered town?

Not at all. We are instead located on a long, slim, snow-covered train!

Yes my friends, this movie celebrates the grand old institution of railway travel - from a jovial conductor who welcomes each passenger aboard by name, to the delightfully cosy private cabins stocked with candles and flowers, to customer service so poor that no-one at Amtrak notices when our heroic train gets stuck in a snowstorm, forcing two passengers to head off on snowshoes to seek help so that everyone on the train does not perish from hypothermia!

n.b. Before being struck down by the dangerously scenic conditions, the train sometimes makes stops for an hour or two at places where passengers can alight to have a chat about their feelings:

But these are big cities such as Chicago, where one cannot spend too long if one wants to remain merry and bright. Get back on that train, people, and get right up in each other’s business!

Is the lead character’s name festive?

There are approximately 350 lead characters and none of their names are festive (we’re talking Tom, Eleanor, Max, Agnes, Steve, Julie. UGH.) Using an ensemble cast = some heinous monkeying with the trusted format. This is NOT what we Christmas movie aficionados tune in for, Hallmark. We don’t want multiple, intersecting plots. We don’t want more than one mystery. We want a busy lady who likes Christmas slightly too much and a ruthless gentleman with an indifference to the holidays, and we want to watch their adventures play out identically over the course of twenty-something movies in a row IF YOU PLEASE.

Recognise anyone?

Like, EVERYONE. I enjoy imagining that this project came about because Dermot Mulroney and Joan Cusack and Danny Glover were all headed off to make different movies, and coincidentally found themselves travelling on the same train.

Everyone’s a bit ungrateful for the joys Christmas brings because they’re pre-occupied with other things such as:

Being a man and trying to get writing inspiration from riding a train

Being a woman and trying to get writing inspiration from riding a train

Being a famous movie director called Max Powers and making strangers have a drink with you

Trying to get married but the wedding officiant isn’t coming because he fell over on ice

Trying to beat everyone on the train at chess

Does anything magical or supernatural happen?

People are always saying things like: "Don't worry, it'll all come out on the train, it always does." Apparently it’s a well-known fact that if you ride a train, you must expect the other passengers to find out every detail of your romantical life. Like, literally, you’ll just be enjoying the view, and the conductor will come along to dish out their opinion about you and your potential honey:

This has never happened to me but I presume it would if I took longer journeys.

On a grander scale, people frequently imply that the train has a mystical ability to change passengers’ lives, although this is rather undermined by the BIG TWIST (see below).

Does a misunderstanding threaten the lady’s path to Happy Ever After with the man?

Yes - Dermot’s girlfriend who he is NOT THAT INTO surprises him by getting on the train at Chicago, and she is bossy and vain and wants to marry him and Kimberly is not best pleased.

Is this movie bang on trend?

The lady writer makes fun of the gentleman writer for still using paper. LOL paper!

Is there a twiiiist?

There are at least three. THREE!!!

1. Joan’s character is outstandingly nosy and for a while Dermot’s character thinks she is the one stealing passengers’ shiny stuff, but in fact we learn at the end that she is a TRAIN MARSHALL. Which means she is paid to ride the train and snoop on people!

Is that a thing? It sounds fun. I think I’d be willing to do it for free. Call me, Amtrak!

2. A widower appears to be amiable but is actually the train robber! Turns out he’s sad his wife died, and so reverted to being the petty criminal he was before he got married. Fortunately, everyone’s cool with it and I think they arrange for him to get a job working with children or something. Sounds like a logical outcome!

3. THE BIG ONE. Dermot and Kimberly, estranged lovers, are happily reunited by the end of the train journey. But then they find a screenplay in Danny the movie director’s trash, and they work out that he hired actors and orchestrated much of what happened during the journey, in order to bring Dermot and Kimberly back together!

He must have been shipping them HARD to go to that much effort. Also, it’s not clear where the boundaries between fake and real lie e.g. was the thief just acting? Was the snow they had to traipse through actually cotton wool? Are Train Marshalls not real???

Any missed opportunities?

There is no villain. Not Joan when she appears to be a train robber; not the actual train robber; not Dermot’s stuck-up girlfriend. What is so difficult about the concept of some people being nice and some people being naughty?

If we had to put up with an ensemble movie, they should have gone full Poseidon Adventure, and had a blizzard capsize the train so that everyone had to fight for survival upside down while also trying to get a girlfriend!

Best dialogue?

"No secrets on a train. Especially the Christmas Train."

On reflection, is this movie about Christmas?

Chad: My official title is Music Curator. Before Covid-19, we had eight local Memphis DJs that played their own unique Memphis sound seven days a week at the Eight and Sand bar in Central Station Hotel. I would book guest DJ’s from out of town every other month or so. I organize events with local artists and DJs to utilize our beautiful bar and hotel to help our local artists. Holly: What makes Central Station a unique hotel? Central Station has so many unique qualities. One, how awesome the employees are and how we are a team and have a great time working together. Two, another unique quality is that the hotel is based on Memphis music past, present, and future. Third is the fact that Central Station is a functioning train station with Amtrak running to New Orleans and Chicago daily. Holly: What’s the philosophy behind the programming you produce there? Chad: Every room is equipped with an Eggleston Works speaker and you can hear Memphis playlist curated by myself or Eggleston Works. The bar, Eight and Sand, is a great bar where you can listen to Memphis music by one of our DJs and enjoy a fabulous cocktail. We have over 4,000 records. Last but not least, the Listening Lounge quietly tucked behind Eight and Sand. It is a small, cozy, and comfy listening room equipped with Eggleston Works speakers that sound oh so goood! There are many other good things I am leaving out about Central Station Hotel, a very beautiful hotel with amazing artwork and furniture. Yesterday, Vermont senator Bernie Sanders officially dropped out of the race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. Despite early successes in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada, Sanders failed to put up much of a fight against Joe Biden after the latter convincingly won South Carolina. And so, for the second campaign in a row, he has come up short against a weak but well-known presumptive front-runner.In the not-too-distant past, this would have depressed me. When Sanders announced his 2016 presidential campaign, I had never heard of him, but he didn't take too long to figure out. On economic questions, he was among the left-most political figures ever to achieve prominence in America, and was clearly proud of it. On other issues, he strayed from left-wing orthodoxy in some interesting ways. He evinced a skepticism of open borders and increased immigration that occasionally made him sound downright Trumpy. He had a surprisingly decent record on gun rights. And above all, he actually seemed to believe what he said, which I found a breath of fresh air when juxtaposed with the obfuscation and opportunism of his opponent, Hillary Clinton.Four years later, my view of the Sanders phenomenon has changed completely. I do not now mourn the end of Sanders's candidacy, because in his second run for the White House he proved himself to be just another politician: He deemphasized or outright jettisoned his politically inconvenient stances in pursuit of power, while remaining true to a core far-left agenda that, in the absence of that aura of integrity, seems far scarier than it did four years ago.It was always one of the more striking aspects of Sanders's rhetoric that he could sound like an immigration hawk. In a 2015 interview with Vox, he famously called open borders a “Koch brothers proposal”:> It would make everybody in America poorer — you’re doing away with the concept of a nation state, and I don’t think there’s any country in the world that believes in that. If you believe in a nation-state or in a country called the United States or UK or Denmark or any other country, you have an obligation in my view to do everything we can to help poor people. What right-wing people in this country would love is an open-border policy. Bring in all kinds of people, work for $2 or $3 an hour, that would be great for them. I don’t believe in that. I think we have to raise wages in this country, I think we have to do everything we can to create millions of jobs.To be fair, Sanders wasn't necessarily getting immigration-policy advice from Mark Krikorian. He represented an older strain of left-wing thought that argued against immigration from the perspective of labor unions concerned about multinational corporations and undercut wages. But nevertheless, when he spoke of the issue, he could sound surprisingly like Donald Trump, then rampaging his way through the Republican primaries.That Bernie Sanders is gone now. His 2020 platform called for “breaking up ICE and CBP and redistributing their functions to their proper authorities,” unilaterally reinstating President Obama’s DACA and DAPA programs, and decriminalizing illegal immigration, among other things. For the most part, he became difficult to distinguish from his Democratic opponents on immigration, except insofar as some of them chased after him as he moved left in the hope of capturing more votes. Thus did this unconventional aspect of his public persona recede.The story on gun rights is much the same. Vermont is caricatured as a semi-socialist state, and maybe the caricature is accurate. But it also has relatively loose gun laws, and a high rate of per capita firearm ownership. As a representative of the state in various capacities, Sanders has compiled a record that reflects this. The National Rifle Association helped him first win election to the House in 1990, where he would vote against the 1993 Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act. As a senator, he has supported bills that would allow firearms in checked bags on Amtrak trains. And after the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre, Sanders said, “If you passed the strongest gun-control legislation tomorrow, I don’t think it will have a profound effect on the tragedies we have seen.” Though this record was a source of consternation for an otherwise adoring left in 2016, and was fodder for Hillary Clinton's campaign, he didn’t run away from it then.Four years later, the story was very different. A watershed moment came during a February Democratic primary debate, when he was asked about his past vote to protect gun manufacturers from lawsuits pertaining to the use of guns in shootings. “I’ve cast thousands of votes, including bad votes,” Sanders said. “That was a bad vote.” His 2020 platform proposed a buyback program for guns and a ban on assault weapons. In a fitting bookend to his elective career, it also demanded that Democrats “take on the NRA and its corrupting effect on Washington.” Once again, Sanders had tacked left under pressure in search of votes, willingly abandoning a unique part of his persona to the political needs of the moment.Shorn of the ideological heterodoxies that made him appealing, Sanders was reduced to his essence as a crusader for hard-left economics. When, in 2015, he argued that, “You don't necessarily need a choice of 23 underarm-spray deodorants or of 18 different pairs of sneakers when children are hungry in this country,” I still regarded his economic platform as a quirk that might inspire him to join with fiscally conservative Republicans to, say, cut corporate welfare. But it wasn’t a quirk at all: He recently expressed disgust at the idea that someone might make money developing drugs to fight the novel coronavirus.Meanwhile, in his second campaign certain aspects of Sanders’s record that were always there for those who wanted to see them became impossible to ignore. We knew in 2016 that, as mayor of Burlington, the just-married Sanders had visited the Soviet Union on a mission to procure a Soviet sister city that doubled as his honeymoon. Those facts would be more forgivable if he had not offered unqualified praise for Cuban “literacy programs” and the economic progress of Communist China in 2020.In 2016, smitten with the heterodox left-populist gadfly I thought I’d found, I either did not realize the currency that Sanders's economic views had in the Democratic Party or did not anticipate the extent of the foothold they would gain in it. This is due mostly to young voters, who in a 2019 Gallup survey thought almost equally well of capitalism and socialism (51 percent to 49 percent). Sanders consistently garnered more support than Clinton from this group in 2016. In 2020, he maintained that support to a certain extent, though it didn’t translate into actual votes as easily as it had before. Both times around, the center of the Democratic Party, such as it is, held. But the young democratic socialists uncovered by his campaigns continue to maintain that they are the future of the party’s politics, and of the country’s.If they are right, we can be sure that they won’t remember the Bernie Sanders whom I, as an outside conservative observer, once found somewhat compelling. For that Sanders held certain views they would abhor, views that he changed or abandoned when it became politically expedient. And that may be the most disappointing thing about Sanders: In the end, he stands revealed as just another guy all too happy to tell people what they wanted to hear.
