Unintelligent Design Theory

As the classic Sunday School Song asks,”Who put the colours in the Rainbow?” Well God did of course. But if you are fairly knowledgeable about Evolution by Natural Selection or,  indeed, well acquainted with mainstream science at all. you will be at best unimpressed if not actually scornful about the anti-evolution theory of ‘Intelligent Design’. These are the many neo-creationist attempts, popular particularly in the US of A (where else!)  to prove divine creation from their version of  empirical evidence. To my mind the main force of the  intelligent design argument relies on the logical fallacy of ‘appeals to ignorance’.  For sure, the science of evolution as it has developed so far, can’t readily explain certain phenomena. Therefore where there is a gap in our current knowledge, they insert the idea of an intelligent designer. Needless to say the existence of the intelligent designer, why there is an intelligent designer rather than nothing at all or least some far less complex set of brute facts is never explained.  More from wikipedia here:

I don’t want to get bogged down in the whole debate about the evidence for and against. I’ve have a few science ‘A’ levels, but that’s not  nearly enough to feel qualified to give an objective assessment of all the ‘science’ presented by both camps.

Perhaps I haven’t read enough around the subject, but it strikes me that  most critics of ‘Intelligent Design’ don’t  latch on to a more fundamental hole in the theory’s logic and utility. Because Intelligent Design even if it was argued with some credibility, fails to explain how anything actually came to be.  To ‘design’ something is not the same as making it.  I can design a space rocket in my bedroom but that doesn’t produce any actual space rockets. A deity could ‘think up’ the entire universe in his/her/its mind. The deity could use a metaphysical pencil, calculator, protractor and a galaxy sized drawing board or maybe the deity has an heavenly version of an Apple Mac Pro. It does not matter. Not a single well designed Elephant or Ring of Saturn makes it to the shop floor of space and time. To design is not to make or produce. 

Here’s a thought illustration of a further point. Try to follow:

I can bake a cake. I can gather the ingredients and carefully stick to the recipe (who am I kidding? Like most blokes I ignore instructions). Anyway I can stir the ingredients carefully and with love and tender care put the mixture in the oven...and it still turns into a charred inedible mess. But let’s just say for the sake of argument I was a good baker. Even then I don’t make the mixture solidify and undergo whatever chemical transformations are involved in turning uncooked mush into something you’d want for your birthday tea. All I actually do is provide the intention and initial conditions viz the ingredients and some stirring. Natural or at least physical processes (heating) do the rest. And to belabour the point, say I grow a plant. In a plant pot on the window sill and don’t forget to water it like I usually do. I plant a seed in fine damp compost. The sun, the carbon dioxide, the oxygen, the plant’s DNA blue print and cellular protein factories and photosynthesis do the rest. Again I’ve provided the initial conditions only for the plant to turn after a few weeks and months into a large green leafy structure with flowers. 

I wonder if intelligent designers believe that following God’s thinking up his amazing intricate, detailed designs, he then magically caused the world’s creatures to appear  in their particular environments, sea, land, sky out of nowhere and nothing, like a magician pulling a rabbit from a hat. Or maybe they imagine God following his technical drawings to then personally, or with the help of his angels model the animals including humans along with every other bit of the billion piece jigsaw that is earth’s complex ecology. So is the Intelligent Designer like Prometheus in the Greek Myth of Creation? Did the Creator God  put his God-Hands in a bucket of clay and then use the ‘Giraffe’ and ‘Spider’ moulds that he had knocked together in his God-shed to make a breeding pair or tow of Play Doh models that he left to dry in the sun, before breathing life into them? How did that work with Amoeba or Jelly Fish? And did he tweak his clay models to create different species and then physically place them by hand or Amazon Angel Delivery, in Africa and Australia?

I’m guessing that Intelligent Designers imagine - if they have any imagination, because dogma abhors imagination and speculation - that God merely thinking of some design in his God Mind, ‘makes it so’. Okay, your turn. Try thinking really hard about, say, your favourite sandwich or  a pack of (scarce as hen’s teeth) toilet paper. Now. Try Harder. Just will them flesh and bones into existence...

 No? Not working?  But if we go along with Intelligent Design then God can apparently do something we can’t, namely by creating an image in his head, this immediately translates into a physical entity. If God could imagine things into existence it would suggest that the universe was either an ongoing simulation or just a day dream of God. Hard, soft, rough, sticky, smelly, fragrant, dry, wet, hot, cold, mass possessing, material and energy containing, character of creation would be unreal, having no independent existence. Including us. We would be figments only in the mind of God or a moving set of pixels on his galaxy sized X Box. We only don’t know this because we are trapped in the Matrix.

I’m no theologian. Nevertheless I wanted to take the implications of the Intelligent Designers complete lack of an actual theory of creation to the point of absurdity. Even my everyday experience suggest that any designing God would at best provides the initial conditions for creation, with naturalistic processes doing the rest. Alternatively God is Brahman and the physical word is Maya, illusion. I don’t think the average Intelligent Design proponent would want these theological implications. Intelligent Design might work for the Deist and for theist who does believe in Evolution by Natural Selection. It doesn’t bridge the explanatory gap between abstract theory and a literal reading of the Bible and Hebrew Mythology. It doesn’t in short prove what most of its proponents want it to prove even if it credible ‘in theory’. Theory is not practice.

Not being God, I’m now going to make that sandwich that I’ve been thinking and salivating about for the last ten minutes.
