my life has been greatly improved after i did this and i want to help my fellow mobile warriors, but there are no full clear tutorials on it out there, so im making my own

under the cut there'll be an overly extensive but hopefully helpful tutorial on how to use revanced (of youtube revanced fame) to get a patched version of the tumblr mobile app which can reverse annoying UI changes, get prev tags back, and get rid of tumblr live permanently

first of all, this only works on android. sorry. but that said here we go

firstly go on the play store and turn off Play Protect. you'll generally need to turn off/ignore any safety checks you get, and allow to "download from unverified sources" (dw this process is safe, you can turn these back on after you're done)

uninstall the tumblr app you currently have on your phone (the one from the play store)

download Vanced MicroG and ReVanced Manager. install both. ReVanced Manager will become an app you'll need to use for this

go to this link. generally youre supposed to be careful when downloading apks off the internet, but i can testify the ones from apkmirror are safe

now this is where the magic happens. apkmirror has the apks for ALL versions of the tumblr app, from the most recent one as far back as 2015

this is how you can reverse any changes to the tumblr app you dont like, simply get an apk from before the change was made

the one im currently using is v29.1.1.100

pros of this one:

- the old image viewer (you can click on images to zoom in without the weird transparent background and scrolling taking you to unrelated posts)

- prev tags (aka you can click on a post or a reblog to be taken directly to that version of the post or the reblog instead of just going to the top of op's blog)

- general reversal of recent UI changes, like the DM redesign and the update that made everything smaller and round

having chosen an apk, download it. i heard some people say you should only download and not install it right away, but mine only worked when i had it installed, so it might depend for you

now go to the ReVanced Manager app you downloaded earlier

go to the Patcher tab, and there click on Select and application, there you can select the tumblr apk you just downloaded

there you can see the available patches, simply click on patch and wait until its done

i believe if you did not need to install your apk earlier you can just click "install" and install the patched version right away.

but for me, since i had to install my apk, what i had to do was, once my app was patched, click on the folder icon on the bottom left, save the patched app to my phone files (besides the og one, not replace it), then i went to my file manager, deleted the original apk, THEN installed the revanced version

idk if you'll need to do this but it was a pain for me to figure this out so if it helps someone else 👍

and with that its done! if you manage to install it sucessfully, you can just open the app, log in, and youll see if its working if tumblr live is completely gone and all other changes are applied o7

Steam

Back in the day, every time you installed a computer game, you were basically on your own. You had to go and look to see if they were patches, and you might find two or three different patches.

Then you would have to use a download manager to download them. And that’s because if they were over 10 MB, you would have a really high chance that your Internet service provider would terminate your connection before the download was finished.

And sometimes the copy protection on the games was basically insane.

Sony for example, used to install what is effectively a back door Trojan that took complete control of your computer in case they needed to break your entire system on the grounds that you might not be using the official DVD of their game.

The overreach on that was a huge scandal at the time.

Then Valve came along, and they were handling a lot of the protection, but they were also handling all of the patches. Not only were they handling the patches but if you bought the game and registered it, they let you download the game.

Of course this was initially not well received… because the steam client used to use about 8 MB, and that was a huge chunk of your system memory.

When they started offering the same facility that Valve games got, to other peoples games it was a pretty huge deal.

You were no longer at the mercy of having bought a game and finding out that the installed disc was scratched so that was it - You just had to buy a new copy.

You didn’t have to have three or four anti copy systems running at once you just had one which was Steam’s.

And all of a sudden they were selling games through their store, which meant you didn’t have to go down to the physical store and see if they actually had a copy on the shelf, which sometimes they didn’t do and you had to order it in.

Plus, because they weren’t having to run a shop with a couple of people and a bunch of shelves, the pricing was more reliable and usually cheaper.

Anyway, there is a meme going round of Gaben, captioned “ business strategy don’t do anything just watch other people shoot themselves in the foot”, and it’s kind of true but actually absolutely not true, it’s just that their business strategy was to be less of a huge douche than for example, Sony while offering a very good service that nobody else wanted to offer.

Holy shit

I just started watching a video on the youtube app, for the first time in over a year. And I was so pissed off about the ads, that within 20 minutes of opening the app, I found a guide on Reddit. Downloaded three apps. Then got the revanced version of youtube, which took me like 30 minutes to figure out how to do

I'm used to a few ads, sure. I even tolerate it. Sit through 15 seconds, twice, per 30 minute video. And the person gets paid: I'm cool with that. But I started a 15 minute video, and got 2 unskippable ads to start with, then 3 minutes in, I got another 2 ads. And that's intolerable.

I pirate apps, download APKs, install app managers to get content in games I've already paid for, that I'd have to pay more for. Shit like that, on the daily. But until now, revanced has just been too much of a pain in the ass to be worth it in my mind. But same as Firefox before it. You can only deal with so much shit, before you're willing to put in a few hours, watch a few tutorials, and change your daily use of the Internet.

And thusly I have.

Fuck YouTube, fuck Google, long live APK patches and browser plugins for simultaneous quality of life, and ad free use of the Internet.

DMMD steam DLC/patch installation guide

(my version, as of 2024)

pretext: first off, i was not aware that steams version of DMMD has dialogue and image censorship when getting it, though i was happy to find out that the creators have a patch for steams version to get the full experience.

I had some issues installing the patch at first because I take instructions word for word; but of course I figured it out (nothing can stop me) so i wanted to upload the process i had to go though. My notes (recommend checking) and sources at the end.

To start, opening the steam version of DMMD (without the patch) will say its version 1.00s. You can check this by opening the game in windowed (screen mode); or when in the game, select CONFIG on the menu page and look at the version number at the bottom of the screen (as seen below).

First: After verifying what version you have, you'll need to buy and download the patch. (this part is run of the mill, but i saw on forms that some struggled with it in the past.)

After buying on Jasts website, to download go to the "my account tab" and select "my games". The DLC will be there (as seen below).

You'll click on the arrow that pops up when hovering on the game (circled above), select "view downloads" and a screen will pop up (marked as (1). On that screen (as seen below)) you'll click on "steam patch," then another tab will pop up (marked as (2), it'll ask about disc space and you'll say "yes" (as circled below).

After it downloads, whatever internet browse you're using (mine being chrome), a tab will pop up (should be around top right corner of your browser) and you'll want to hit "open" (as seen above). This will open a Files tab in your computer (we will be calling this Tab(2), as seen below)

Now, the actual installation: Opening steam up, locate dramatical murder in your library (as seen below). Of course, make sure the game is not open. You'll want to click the settings gear (1), hover on manage (2), then select "browse local files" (3). This will open another file tab (we will be calling this Tab(1)), keep this open as is.

Next: Pull up Tab(2) and select the file to view its contents. You will want to select ALL THREE (both files and the folder, as seen below in the first image below) Then you will drag and drop them into Tab(1). This will prompt a pop up asking what you want to do with the files, you will select replace (as seen below in the second image). Then let it load.

Finally: You're basically done! You'll want to close close out of everything, then I highly recommend restarting your computer. (its always good to do so after running downloads and playing with a games files.)

To check and make sure the patch installed correctly: Do what we did at the beginning, bootup the game to check the running version. (as seen below). It will say its version 1.00 on the CONFIG screen (or at the top if you don't open the game in full screen.) The UNPATCHED version (censored) is 1.00s, the PATCHED (uncensored) version is 1.00.

If you're anxious (like me) and have convinced yourself that (despite it saying ver1.00) your game isn't patched, play though till Mink has kidnapped Aoba and it'll play a scene that is censored in the steam version. (The image below is the scene I am talking about.) You cannot fast skip, sadly, but check my notes for a tip on getting here faster.

Notes:

-Disclaimer, this patch will restarted all of your game data. It will not erase your previous steam achievements. If you're using the same PC, game data for the unpatched version is still saved and if you uninstall after using the patch and reinstall (without uploading the patch again) it will pull up your previous game data. (At least this has happened in my experience.)

-All of the sources i read warned me/told me that using this patch won't unlock steam achievements; this is no longer true. Sources said it could randomly unlock achievements out of order, i don't believe this is true anymore either. In my current experience, steam achievements have been unlocking at the correct times (example being, after finishing a route), and I haven't had any unlock randomly.

-Fun fact/quick trick! It may suck to have to restart (especially if you are like me and like having a game done to 100% completion), but if you have a mouse (not a laptop touch pad, to my knowledge) it can be a little bit easier.

To my experience; if you haven't played through a section of DMMD, you cannot fast skip. A feature I actually really like, but because you're playing under new game data when installing the patch, its a bitch. If you use your scroll wheel (wheel in the center of a standard mouse), you can skip through dialogue REALLY fast. This makes restoring where you were in the game a lot easier. Though it won't skip through cut-scenes...

The DMMD program will remember that you've read dialogue up to the last choice you've made, even if you don't save. Though it will not remember after that choice till after you reach another choice (so on and so forth). So, remember to save! Having a bunch of save files is one of the joys of playing games like DMMD.

Hello! I saw on your "list of programs you use", you made note that if you arent careful ReVanced can cause some damage? I can't seem to find an answer to which *kind* of damage tho just a big ol download button on the site. wanted to ask about it properly (and wasent sure where else to ask) before i touched anything!

Ah sorry for taking so long to get back to you! I should have clarified more! So before the ReVanced manager you had to use command line developer tools to make your APK. It seems like you don't have to do that anymore, so a lot of the risks there are gone!

The biggest risk with ReVanced is the fact it only works with certain versions of the Youtube app, and it's unlikely you'll have the exact version required. So you'll likely have to scour the internet for an APK, which can VERY dangerous!

I, personally, use APKMirror for this. However I highly recommend having an antivirus installed during this process! For my own sanity I run it right after patching ReVanced!

So my post about how you should draw (YOU SHOULD DRAW!) blew up beyond any precedent since my return to tumblr and someone in the FRANKLY KIND OF TERRIFYING NUMBER OF REBLOGS mentioned downloading a free DAW to make music and that got me thinking,

HOBBY SOFTWARE MEGAPOST GO

All of the below software is free to use, and most of it is Open Source (which is its own thing I recommend learning about, its entire existence and success gives me hope for humanity) so GO GET SOME TOOLS! Make things like nobody's watching and then SHOW IT TO THEM ANYWAY! Or don't! Even if you hide your work from the world (lord knows I do!!!) you will have created something! And it feels amazing to create something!

VISUAL ARTS:

Inkscape: Adobe Illustrator replacement, pretty solid if a bit quirky.

Krita: Painting software, if anything slightly overpowered and sometimes more complicated than you want, but can do bloody anything including advanced color management. A wonderful tool.

Blender: You have probably heard it is super hard to use. This is CONDITIONALLY true. Because the developers are working day and night to improve everything about it it's always getting better and now like, 80% of the hardness is just because 3D is hard. Aside: Blender Grease Pencil - A subsystem in Blender is concerned with 2D animation and it is. Surprisingly good. Some annoying conventions but totally possible to literally make professional traditional 2D animation.

MUSIC:

LMMS: A free and open source DAW that can do a lot, except use most modern VST plugins. The practical upshot of this is that if you are just starting out with music it is totally serviceable but over time you might start to long for something with the ability to load hella plugins. (I'm currently trying out Reaper which has a long free trial and is technically nagware after that point...)

PlugData: You GOTTA TRY THIS, it's not mentally for everyone (not HARD exactly, just WEIRD) but if your brain works well with this kind of flow graph stuff it's a magical playground of music. (If you have heard of PureData, PlugData is based on it but has a lot of nice graphical upgrades and can work as a VST if you have a proper DAW)

Surge XT: A big ol' synthesizer plugin that also can run standalone and take midi input so you can technically use it to make music even if you don't have a DAW. If planning notes ahead of time sounds intimidating, but you can get your hands on a midi piano controller, this might actually be a great way to start out playing with music on your computer!

Bespoke Synth: Another open source DAW, but this one is... sort of exploded? Like PlugData you patch things together with cables but it has a wild electrified aesthetic and it can do piano rolls. Fun though!

GAME DEV:

Yeah that's right, game dev. You ABSOLUTELY can make video games with no experience or ability to code. I actually recommend video games as a way to learn how to code because the dopamine hits from making a character bumble around on a screen are enormously bigger than like. Calculating pi or something boring like that. ANYWAY:

Twine: Twine is what I might describe as sort of a zero-barrier game dev tool because you're literally writing a story except you can make it branch. It has programming features but you can sort of pick them up as you go. Lowest possible barrier to entry, especially if you write!

Godot: I use this engine all the time! It's got great tutorials all over the internet and is 100% FREE AND ALWAYS WILL BE. Technically there are more Unity tutorials out there, but Godot has plenty enough to learn how to do things. It's also SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT so you won't spend your precious hobby time waiting for the engine to load. There are absolutely successful games made with this but I think the best thing about it is that the shallow end of the learning curve is PRETTY OK ACTUALLY.

Tales & Woes of the Broken Sims

😖😩😭If you play with mods, you may be going through what I'm going through. I haven't been able to enter the CAS screen for the past two weeks because several mods broke due to the latest update. Literally, all my sims are baldheaded and walking around in their underwear right now.

While several modders are quick to rectify things on their end with updates, many of my favorite mods that make simming easier are still broken.

I've been scouring the internet trying to find solutions to no avail. The best I can do at this point is offer some helpful information and tips on how to make this weird purgatory many of us are in, a little more manageable.

Download and install the following application and mod in order to help clean up your mods and identify any problematic mods.

Sims 4 Mod Manager - Install to the same drive your sims is installed. Upon first open, you'll be prompted to locate your sims folder located in your Documents folder. There you can update your mods, locate and delete duplicates, disable and re-enable all your mods with one click, and identify bad files and saves, etc.

Better Exceptions Mod by TwistedMexi - Unzip this into your Mods folder, and start the game, a BE menu from the welcome notification, will appear the first time you load a household each session. Click "Check for Conflicts" and allow the scan to complete. This can take several minutes depending on how many mods you have, and more importantly how many conflicts you have.

The report will open in your browser. Much of the report is hidden behind collapsed sections, so make sure to scroll toward the bottom of the report to see what specific mods/scripts/files, etc are causing issues.

If you have any of the following issues, most likely, theres nothing you can do now that will help until updates are provided or the mods are removed.

-Can't Enter the CAS screen. ( The only fix I know of that works for some people is to remove the broken CAS Column Extender mod you might have installed.)

-Tuning Errors from Better Exceptions. This is due to the broken XmlInjector_Script_v4. This mod is required to use some of the most popular mods, like the LittleMsSam's mods ( who by the way immediately jumped on the patch bandwagon and has been diligently updating all her mods). There is unfortunately no update for the XmlInjector at the moment.

-Any Trait errors shown by BE are due to the broken MC Command Center mod.

Okay, so, I started BG3. But this post is not about spoilers. It's about how it looks.

You see, I preordered it when it first became available, and participated in Early Access for most of its duration (except for two last patches). As you may know, during the development Larian abruptly changed the system requirements. And while my laptop with old GTX1050 was sitting comfortably enough in the middle of the old requirements, it's barely able to crawl under the minimum of the new version.

So, while the game was running smoothly with the medium graphic settings at the start of EA, by druids patch I couldn't even get to the first settlement because of the freezes, textures lagging in and out of their blurry existence, T-posing, etc. It was pretty bad.

Reportedly, the final game should have been optimized a bit better, so I decided to give it a shot and see how it looks like on the same laptop almost 3 years since the first download.

Yeah, I know that the cloud gaming exist. It costs money and needs a speedy internet connection.

And the game greeted me with this.

(Changed everything from medium to low except for the texture quality - it's still on medium. Had to say goodbye to the distance blur as well)

Comparison of the first model appearance vs after the textures loaded in is quite funny, though.

It jumped to the left version each time I moved the camera in/out even a tiny bit, loading the textures from the right anew. Each. Time. The same happened during the last patches of EA, except that back then the loading could take a few minutes. Now it's either ~15 sec or not loading at all here.

Tbh, after seeing all of that in the dressing room, I dreaded of what would I see during the main game.

But it's surprisingly better. Almost no jarring rounded pixelation, and no jumping between abyssmal low and normal version of textures.

The reaction to light still sucks sometimes. The hair pick too much from the light sources that are barely visible otherwise and don't light up anything else to the same degree.

As for the optimization: yes, it indeed became better. Still not the first EA release quality for me, sadly, but by far better than the latest EA patches. Textures are way more steady now: they still take a few seconds to load in during the big cutscenes, but it's like nothing compared to the previous mess. During the regular exploration gameplay character (and most of environmental) textures are always steady. I even managed to watch the full crashing cutscene as a, well, cutscene instead of three half-loaded frames that took 20 min to render. And I was running freely on the beach despite the falling ash and everything that almost killed my frames back then.

Also, it still doesn't heat up my laptop all that much, which is a pleasant surprise.

I just talked to a guy who claimed to have a job. The first red flag was he said it was a job working for a charity doing sales.
