So this summer, I participated in my work’s Big Sib program for our incoming summer interns. It was interesting. I’ve never really participated in any of those types of programs where I was a mentor, where I worked one-on-one with someone, but I have volunteered in many programs, events, and work-related programs where I did help my associates when necessary.
While I have always been the “mom” or “big sis” of the group, even if I was sometimes the youngest, actually being someone’s assigned big sib was definitely more interesting. And for the particular reason that unlike in the past, I never really had to worry about what my friends or associates had to do. This time, I was actually in charge of teaching and nurturing someone’s skills and helping them develop their techniques and social behaviors to help them excel in their work and internship.
Being apart of a program where I can help teach and nurture someone is beyond fulfilling. I’ve always been someone who loved to help and teach someone, but becoming an educator just wasn’t in the stars for me. But participating in something where I can be an influence on someone has this rewarding feeling that makes me appreciate educators of all kinds.
While I was only a big sib for two short months during the summer, I was able to connect with my intern in a way that I wasn’t just her senior. I really was her big sib; her friend. At first, it was a bit weird, trying to get to know someone you’re assigned to while trying to be professional, but as time progressed and we became comfortable with one another, it was like we had been long term friends.
I honestly would suggest this if anyone ever has the opportunity to participate in any big sib programs. It makes you appreciate what you’re doing more as you help make someone’s experience more comfortable, exciting and educational.

Many developmental interns have taken full-time positions at NYPA. NYPA was named one of America’s Best Midsize Employers by Forbes in 2021. To search openings, visit nypa.gov/careers.

Robert Mandato, a recent graduate of SUNY Buffalo, grew up in Baldwin, NY and interned with our Electrical Engineering group this summer.
Currently majoring in Electrical Engineering, he chose this major after “first becoming interested in musical synthesizers and wondering how they made electricity into sound. From there, it snowballed into a greater interest in everything electrical, and how almost everything we use is dependent on it”.
Some of his favorite classes include Power Electronics, Introduction to Programming, Renewable Distribution Generation & Storage, and his Electronics lab. When not studying or enjoying his electronics courses, he enjoys playing and making music. He also enjoys traveling. “One place I have traveled to was Alaska. In Anchorage, I saw the beautiful nature trails, the snowy peaks, and the city. It was something that definitely has to be seen and experienced”.
“My goal at this internship is to gain more strength to my knowledge and increase my skill set to set myself up for success in the future. I chose NYPA due to hearing about and visiting their Niagara Power Plant, which was pretty close to SUNY Buffalo. After visiting it, I became very interested in a lot of their projects. Learning how much energy they provided and distributed, I wanted to know more about how they operated.”

Getting to Know...Rohan Raghuraman
Welcome to NYPA’s 2021 Summer Intern blog series. Each week, we’ll feature several interns working across our various sites and departments. Read on to learn more about our interns and why they chose to work at NYPA.
Many developmental interns have taken full-time positions at NYPA. NYPA was named one of America’s Best Midsize Employers by Forbes in 2021. To search openings, visit nypa.gov/careers.

Rohan Raghuraman, originally from India & raised in Abu Dhabi, UAE, just graduated from New York University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering. He will be pursuing his Master of Science this Fall, also in Electrical Engineering, at Columbia University. He is interning in our R&D Innovation group for the summer.
“I chose to study Electrical Engineering because of the diversity of opportunities that the field offered. Eventually I found my passion in power and energy because I believe I can make the most difference by providing an essential service to everyone and helping lead the way to a decarbonized energy grid”.
“One of the classes I enjoyed was my Transmission and Distribution class because I learned about ‘real’ things. I could see the transmission lines, and transformers, and interact with them, albeit in a limited capacity. The tangible aspect of the class endeared me to it. Additionally, I really enjoyed working on my Senior Design Project class. This is because I could explore new topics such as transient stability of machines, renewable integration on a large scale, while at the same time learning new software that my university did not typically teach”.
When not studying, Rohan enjoys playing and watching basketball (“Go Nets!”) and football (“Go Browns!”). He’s also a big fan of comedy; “I love watching stand-up shows and any comedy TV shows. If you need any comedy recommendations, you know who to come to!”
In five years, Rohan sees himself working in the power sector, helping to decarbonize the energy grid. “I know NYPA will allow me to achieve this goal through the experience and connections I gain during this internship. NYPA has exciting projects that align with my future goals and it would be a wonderful opportunity to work on them now and in the future”.

“NYPA has been my number one company to work for ever since I got into the field of power. This is because NYPA is on the cutting-edge of energy research. I strongly believe in NYPA’s VISION2030 and NYPA’s ability to preserve hydropower as a core carbon-free source of power in New York State and to decarbonize its fleet of natural gas plants. This is the way forward and having these achievable goals further proves to me that I made the right decision by joining NYPA”.
Of future goals, Rohan enjoys challenges. “One place that I would like to travel to would be to Mount Everest. I believe summiting Everest is the peak of human physical accomplishment. I love challenges and summiting Everest is one of the most challenging things a human can do in their life time. Therefore, that is definitely on my bucket list”.

Matt Keeton, from Hatfield, PA, is a rising “Super Senior” (5th year student) at Penn State University, majoring in Energy Engineering & interning this summer in our Energy Efficiency group. “I picked Energy Engineering because of the opportunity to work in so many different fields. I can work with petroleum, natural gas, solar panels, circuits, and more, in both the technical and financial aspects”.
“I love all of my classes that have hands on experience, but my solar energy conversion class was really special to me, because I was able to design a solar PV system for Williamsburg, PA”. Outside of class, Matt enjoys hiking, mountain biking, drawing & gaming – in the future, he sees himself being surrounded by nature and national parks. “To me, it doesn’t matter which state, as long as I can easily get lost in nature”.
“My goal for my internship is to gain a wide range of real world experience in the energy industry. I chose NYPA because of their #VISION2030, and their goal of leading the US in large-scale electrification”.

To Matt, there are currently two trends in the energy industry that excite him: hydrogen fuel cell development & energy storage systems. “The development of hydrogen fuel cells for motor vehicles is very intriguing to me because I believe this is the future of transport. Energy storage system development for large-scale grids is also interesting to me, since this will outweigh the usefulness of non-renewable fuels and will encourage more businesses to go green”.
