The 1932 version of Back Street (the first of three films Hollywood made from Fannie Hurst's novel) suggests that there are some things you couldn't say even in a pre-Code movie. Ray Schmidt (Irene Dunne) and Walter Saxel (John Boles) have fallen in love, but he's engaged to a woman of whom his mother approves. He thinks that if his mother meets Ray, she might be inclined to let him break off the engagement and marry her instead. But on the day of the scheduled meeting, Ray's sister, Freda (June Clyde), comes to her in distress: The man she's been seeing is leaving town and she desperately needs Ray's help in persuading him to stay. If he doesn't, she tells Ray, she'll kill herself -- and she opens a window to prove the point. Why is Freda so desperate? The answer becomes apparent with an exchange of Meaningful Glances: She's pregnant. The word or any of its variants is never spoken. So Ray misses the meeting with Mother and loses the chance to marry Walter. Years pass and Ray and Walter meet again, after he's married and become a wealthy businessman. He sets her up in an apartment as his mistress, which she tolerates for a time until she realizes what she's lacking in life and begs him, "Walter, give me a child." Walter is shocked at the very idea. The mechanics of an illicit sexual relationship, including the veiled subject of contraception, are summed up in the reticence around Freda's plight and Ray's plea to Walter, which sounds a bit like she wants him to go down to the baby store and pick one off the shelf. Euphemisms aside, your acceptance of the movie depends to some degree on whether you enjoy watching Dunne, an actress who can slip into coyness and archness. The film gives her a gamut to run, from the flirtatious Ray who likes to drink beer with the fellows in the early part of the film, to the nobly suffering kept woman of the later part. Boles is a little stiff in his role, though that rather suits the character. On the whole, Back Street is a solid "woman's picture" of the kind that would be treated with more life and color by filmmakers like Douglas Sirk in the 1950s.

Just sayin’... they ALL were asked to sing extra loud so that Irene would hear them in heaven but in the end it’s only Ringo serenading to the sky… how is he not the softest one of them all?

They did…

Sina forgot to take Roberts phone to the wedding so he missed a call from the german consulate in Thailand and so they were waiting at the airport for Irene to come back home and then… there was a coffin and a guy who offers his condolences and asked Robert to identify Irene’s body.

Irene had a hard attack and died a few days ago. Her tour guide took care of getting her dead body back to germany.

Ringo: Yes. How did she do it?

Sina: Doesn’t matter. It only matters that they know and will get us out of here. Now we just have to wait for the police

Chris: That really looks awful. Is the pain bearable?

Ringo: You’re a bright spark, huh?

Chris: You’ve just heard it. Help is on its way. Same as the ambulance and some pain killers

Ringo: I hope so. I don’t feel like dying in this hellhole!

Till: I’m sure Mareike has hailed a car and called the police

Eva: I’d really like to know what she was thinking, locking us up, the safes-

Paco: Yes, why in particular? Just out of revenge for Rolf?

Fiona: Correct, Paco. Hello, Fiona is back.

Chris: Ringo is seriously injured and has to be taken to hospital immediatly. Do you want to be responsible for his death?

Fiona: You are lucky if Ringo remains the only one injured

Bambi: Chris, are you there? Can you hear us? Schnuppi, are you there, too?

Sina: Schnuppi, are you alright? How are you?

Till: Well, we’ve been better

Chris: Till

Bambi: Everything is alright. Fiona captured Till but Mareike was able to escape. How are you?

Sina: We are fine except Ringo

Bambi: Schnuppi, I’m sorry that I can’t be with you

Fiona: Uh, you also wanna tell each other that you love the other one, you schnuppis? It could be the last time so do it

Bambi: You don’t even know what love is, you psycho!

Es ist Tradition, Schauspieler nach der letzten abgedrehten Szene vom ganzen Team zu verabschieden. In meinem Fall stand ich während meiner letzten Szene in der Konditorei. Ich wusste, was mich erwartet, ich merkte auch schon während des Drehens, dass es draußen vor der Tür sehr unruhig wurde. Meine Szene war abgedreht, dann kamen alle Kollegen ins Studio, applaudierten, umarmten mich, sagten mir liebe Worte ... Man kann sich sicher vorstellen, wie emotional das war!

I loved Irene in today‘s episode! If someone‘s a dick you’re allowed to tell him that. I hate this „Stay out of it“ nonsense. Elli is their friend/family and so is Paco. It IS their business. Would you just stay out of it if you had a good friend who treated another good friend like Paco treated Elli lately?
