You know, sometimes I’m grateful that my first summer in my graduate lab, at the impressionable age of 22, my main assignment was to design and build a full closed-loop water cooling system, with a chiller whose heat exchanger had to also be connected to the building cold water system (which, if you screwed it up, had enough water flow that you could flood the whole lab). And I gained familiarity with all the main types of hose, tube, and pipe connectors and how to install them.
I also learned the very important life lesson of, if all else fails, a blow torch can solve nearly any problem. I think I solved three different problems with a blow torch that summer.
No home plumbing I might undertake will match the disasters I ran into that summer.

SAPPHIRES AND RUBIES IN THE SKY ** Synopsis: Researchers at the Universities of Zurich and Cambridge have discovered a new, exotic class of planets outside our solar system. These so-called super-Earths were formed at high temperatures close to their host star and contain high quantities of calcium, aluminum, and their oxides -- including sapphire and ruby. ** 21 light-years away from us in the constellation Cassiopeia, a planet orbits its star with a year that is just three days long. Its name is HD219134 b. With a mass almost five times that of Earth it is a so-called "super-Earth." Unlike Earth, however, it most likely does not have a massive core of iron, but is rich in calcium and aluminum. "Perhaps it shimmers red to blue like rubies and sapphires, because these gemstones are aluminum oxides which are common on the exoplanet," says Caroline Dorn, astrophysicist at the Institute for Computational Science of the University of Zurich. HD219134 b is one of three candidates likely to belong to a new, exotic class of exoplanets, as Caroline Dorn and her colleagues at the Universities of Zurich and Cambridge now report in the British journal MNRAS. The researchers study the formation of planets using theoretical models and compare their results with data from observations. It is known that during their formation, stars such as the Sun were surrounded by a disk of gas and dust in which planets were born. Rocky planets like Earth were formed out of the solid bodies left over when the proto-planetary gas disk dispersed. These building blocks condensed out of the nebula gas as the disk cooled. "Normally, these building blocks are formed in regions where rock-forming elements such as iron, magnesium, and silicon have condensed," explains Dorn who is associated to the NCCR PlanetS. The resulting planets have an Earth-like composition with an iron core. Most of the super-Earths known so far have been formed in such regions. The composition of super-Earths is more diverse than expected But there are also regions close to the star where it is much hotter. "There, many elements are still in the gas phase and the planetary building blocks have a completely different composition," says the astrophysicist. With their models, the research team calculated what a planet being formed in such a hot region should look like. Their result: calcium and aluminum are the main constituents alongside magnesium and silicon, and there is hardly any iron. "This is why such planets cannot, for example, have a magnetic field like the Earth," says Dorn. And because the inner structure is so different, their cooling behavior and atmospheres will also differ from those of normal super-Earths. The team therefore speak of a new, exotic class of super-Earths formed from high-temperature condensates. "What is exciting is that these objects are completely different from the majority of Earth-like planets," says Dorn -- "if they actually exist." The probability is high, as the astrophysicists explain in their paper. "In our calculations we found that these planets have 10-20% lower densities than the Earth," explains the first author. Other exoplanets with similarly low-densities were also analyzed by the team. "We looked at different scenarios to explain the observed densities," says Dorn. For example, a thick atmosphere could lead to a lower overall density. But two of the exoplanets studied, 55 Cancri e and WASP-47 e, orbit their star so closely that their surface temperature is almost 3000° and they would have lost this gas envelope long ago. "On HD219134 b it's less hot and the situation is more complicated," explains Dorn. At first glance, the lower density could also be explained by deep oceans. But a second planet orbiting the star a little further out makes this scenario unlikely. A comparison of the two objects showed that the inner planet cannot contain more water or gas than the outer one. It is still unclear whether magma oceans can contribute to the lower density. "So, we have found three candidates that belong to a new class of super-Earths with this exotic composition," the astrophysicist summarizes. The researchers are also correcting an earlier image of super-Earth 55 Cancri e, which had made headlines in 2012 as the "diamond in the sky." Researchers had previously assumed that the planet consisted largely of carbon, but had to abandon this theory on the basis of subsequent observations. "We are turning the supposed diamond planet into a sapphire planet," laughs Dorn. TATTOO LASER REMOVAL PLAY VIDEO LASER TATTOO REMOVAL RESULTS (befroe and after) TATTOO LASER REMOVAL PLAY VIDEO LASER COSMETIC TATTOO REMOVAL RESULTS (befroe and after) TATTOO LASER REMOVAL PLAY VIDEO History of tattoo Tattoos have fascinated humankind from all cultures and strata of society for centuries. From the ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations to the modern society we have today, skin markings have been used to enhance beauty, demonstrate uniqueness, signify belonging, and sometimes to identify, shame, or punish.  The term tattooing is derived from “tattau,” a Tahitian word which translates essentially as “to mark” and is a process of implantation of permanent pigment granules in the skin. - Tattoos date back to 5200 years. The early tattoo was made by cutting the skin and rubbing powdered charcoal in the wound - Scientists believe tattoos may have been the first form of medical treatment - The tattoo has been found on female Egyptian mummies. Ancient Egyptians believed tattoos prevented complicated pregnancies and births - In the 10th and 11th centuries, crusaders had cross-shaped tattoos. If killed, that person would receive a Christian Burial. - The tattoo has been to mark slaves and criminals. - In many tribal communities, facial tattoos indicated a person’s status and accomplishment - In the 5th century, the Japanese developed tattoos in fine art with intricate designs and colors - In 19th and 20th century America, tattoos were mostly associated with sailors, fringe cultures, prisoners, and gangs How is a Tattoo Done? Tattoos are created by the introduction of exogenous pigment into the dermal skin layer and can be placed with intent or be the result of accidents and injury. Tattoo inks are composed of pigments or dyes combined with a tattoo pigment vehicle which entraps, encases, incorporates, complexes, encapsulates, or is otherwise associated with the pigment to form pigment/vehicle complexes that retain the pigment in the tissue.  Most professional tattoo artists purchase inks pre-made (known as pre-dispersed inks), while some tattoo artists mix their own using a dry pigment and a carrier. Manufacturers are not required to reveal their ingredients or conduct trials, and recipes may be proprietary. Professional inks may be made from iron oxides (rust), metal salts, or plastics. Homemade or traditional tattoo inks may be made from pen ink, soot, dirt, blood, or other ingredients. Heavy metals used for colors include mercury (red); lead (yellow, green, white); cadmium (red, orange, yellow); nickel (black); zinc (yellow, white); chromium (green); cobalt (blue); aluminium (green, violet); titanium (white); copper (blue, green); iron (brown, red, black); and barium (white). Metal oxides used include ferrocyanide and ferricyanide (yellow, red, green, blue). Organic chemicals used include azo-chemicals (orange, brown, yellow, green, violet) and naptha-derived chemicals (red). Carbon (soot or ash) is also used for black. Other elements used as pigments include antimony, arsenic, beryllium, calcium, lithium, selenium, and Sulphur. Both blacklight and glow in the dark inks have been used for tattooing. Glow in the dark tattoo ink absorbs and retains a light and then glows in darkened conditions by process of phosphorescence. The ingredients in some "glow" inks are listed as: (PMMA) Polymethylmethacrylate 97.5% and microspheres of fluorescent dye 2.5% suspended in UV sterilized, distilled water. Blacklight ink does not glow in the dark, but reacts to non-visible UV light, producing a visible glow by fluorescence. The resulting brightness of both these inks is highly variable. Unsubstantiated claims have been made that some inks fade over time, yielding a "semi-permanent tattoo. The safety of such inks for use on humans is widely debated in the tattoo community. After Tattooing What Happen? After initial injection, the pigment is dispersed throughout a homogenized damaged layer down through the epidermis and upper dermis, in both of which the presence of foreign material activates the immune system's phagocytes to engulf the pigment particles. As healing proceeds, the damaged epidermis flakes away (eliminating surface pigment) while more rooted in the skin granulation tissue forms, which is later converted to connective tissue by collagen growth. This repairs the upper dermis, where pigment remains trapped within fibroblasts, concentrating in a layer just below the dermis/epidermis boundary. Its presence there is stable, but in the long term (decades), the pigment tends to migrate deeper into the dermis, accounting for the degraded detail of old tattoos. Tattoo pigment has been reported both intracellularly and extracellularly, with mild fibrosis and occasional foreign-body giant cell reactions, with allergic granulomas, and with sarcoid reactions. Tattoo ink is remarkably non-reactive histologically, despite the frequent use of different pigments of unknown purity and identity by tattoo artists. Although it rarely occurs, red (mercury), yellow (cadmium), green (chromium), and blue (cobalt) tattoo pigments have elicited a persistent, localized allergic or photoallergic dermatitis and, more infrequently, systemic reactions. Interestingly, the colors most involved in allergic reactions (red and yellow) often spontaneously disappear from a tattoo without clinical signs of a response. Complex and light absorbing molecules are implanted in the skin. When tattooed skin receives UV radiation or natural sunlight, photochemical cleavage of the pigments may occur. The decomposition products are hazardously showing a potential risk of being toxic or even carcinogenic. At present, a risk assessment is not feasible since the concentration of pigments and their decomposition products in skin are unknown. Sun protection is necessary for successful laser tattoo removal. First, it decreases the number of melanin pigments that competed with laser absorption with tattoo pigments. This means reduced intake with tattoo pigments (reduce efficacy and increase absorption by melanin pigments (epidermal injury and more side effects). How to Do Safe Tattooing? What are the Complications? The tattooing should be carried out by trained personnel so that the pigment is placed at the appropriate depth. Thorough cleaning of the surface to be tattooed is mandatory to prevent resident organisms of the skin from being introduced in the dermis. The inks should be sterile and of good quality without external contaminants to reduce the incidence of allergic and granulomatous reactions. Strict aseptic precautions are essential to prevent bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. The instruments should be sterile, and preferably all disposables should be used to avoid transmissible diseases such as Hepatitis B, C, and HIV infection and leprosy. There are regulations that restrict blood donation following a tattoo. The period varies from 4 months to 1 year in different counties. Who Get a Tattoo? In the United States, rates of tattooing have increased over the past several decades. It is currently estimated that 21%to 24%of the population in the United States has at least 1 tattoo. Tattoos also seem increasingly common in younger generations. It has been estimated that up to a quarter of young to middle-aged adults in the United States have at least one tattoo. 2 As tattoos become Who Get Laser Tattoo Removal? Why? 28% of people who get tattoos regret the decision within the first month. The motivation for tattoo removal includes new jobs or careers, the need to portray an image at work or in new social circles, and further, negative feelings towards old tattoos. Various psychosocial reasons, especially when names are tattooed, and patients reconsider or a change of faith in case of religious symbols. Many occupations, such as the armed forces, prohibit the presence of tattoos and seek tattoo removal. It has been rightly sung by Jimmy Buffett, an American singer, that a tattoo is a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling. How Does Laser Remove My Tattoo? The mechanism of action of the QSL is through photon absorption by tattoo pigment within fibroblasts. During the 40-nanosecond pulse, temperatures exceeding 1000°C can occur. Gaseous products of pyrolysis or pores created by superheated steam may account for the lamellated appearance of the granules after laser exposure. The reduction in pigment particle size and fragmentation of pigment-containing cells results from rapid thermal expansion, shock waves, and potentially localized cavitation. Fluence-dependent thermal damage to collagen immediately surrounding the irradiated tattoo pigment also occurs. Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers are capable of emitting two wavelengths of light, 1064- and 532-nm wavelengths. This enables effective treatment of dark tattoo pigments such as black and dark blue using the 1064-nm wavelength, as well as the removal of red and orange pigments using the 532-nm wavelength. This laser sends precise pulses of high energy light into the skin, vaporizing some tattoo inks and fragmenting other tattoo inks into thousands of tiny particles which are then safely eliminated from your skin by macrophages immune cells. How Long Should I Wait Between Tattoo Laser Removal? The appropriate treatment interval is critical and yet poorly understood. Early on, patients were treated every 4 weeks. Higher fluences and shorter pulse widths remove tattoo pigment more rapidly but may induce excessive shock wave tissue reaction; therefore, they must be balanced with the desire to remove dye without scarring or hypopigmentation. The current recommendation is to treat at 6- to 8-week intervals unless a more extended period of 2-3 months is needed for tissue recovery. For highly motivated patients, I schedule them every 2 weeks if only QS lasers are used. Fractional CO2 or Ultra-pulse CO2 is used every 4-6 weeks to help skin recover. You should think of the fading and eventual elimination of your tattoo as a project which you might work on from time to time over the next year or two. What are the Types of Tattoo? Tattoos can be divided into Decorative tattoo (amateur& professional), cosmetic, medical, and traumatic categories. Decorative tattoos are tattoos placed on the skin as a decoration. The classic types of tattoos such as amateur tattoos have paved the way to highly intricate multi-colored professional tattoos, with the current trend being 3D tattoos, optical illusion tattoos, head mandala tattoos, foot tattoos, miniature portraits, etc. Amateur tattoo inks consist of simple, carbon particles originating from burnt wood, cotton, plastic, or paper, or from a variety of inks, including India ink, pen ink, and vegetable matter. A needle used to deposit ink at various depth of the skin.  The amateur tattoo is easily to remove as it contains low volume of pigments and superficially place. Professional tattoos contain more ink, deeper ink, and multiple colors with the help of a hollow needle or a tattoo gun to inject pigments into the dermal layer of skin. The granule depth remains uniform and is located at the bottom of about 400 ums in the upper to mid-dermis. This explains the difficulty in treating these tattoos as compared to amateur tattoos, which are superficially placed. Cosmetic tattoos are also known as micro- pigmentation or permanent cosmetics. This type of tattoo is used as permanent eyeliner, lip liner, lipstick, and other permanent cosmetic purposes. This type of tattoo is also used to cover skin pigment disorders, scars, and other blemishes. In the hands of professionals, permanent cosmetics can form a beneficial final step in the treatment of many patients. Cosmetic tattoos using skin-colored tones like medical tattoos used as radiation markers. Medical Tattoo is used to treat a condition, communicate information, or mark a body location. Tattoos have also been used to provide notice to emergency personnel that a person has diabetes mellitus. During breast reconstruction after mastectomy or breast reduction surgery, tattooing is sometimes used to replace the areola or to fill in areas of pigment loss, which may occur during breast reduction performed with a free nipple graft technique. Medical therapeutic tattooing has been used as a camouflage technique in vitiligo, as camouflage for permanent hair loss after craniofacial surgery, and scars following plastic and reconstructive surgery. The inks used often contain pigments that are red, brown, white, or flesh-colored; inks containing titanium dioxide and iron oxide are difficult to remove Traumatic tattoos are deposited in the skin following abrasion, laceration, or explosive injuries. Such pressurized penetration of dark particles into the deep dermis gives rise to black or blue tattoos, depending on the depth of the pigment. Traumatic tattoos acquired because of fireworks or explosives must be treated with great caution. Some of the particles embedded in the skin may be flammable and may reignite after laser treatment. This may result in significant scarring. These tattoos must be approached with care and a small test spot performed before embarking on the removal of large areas What are the Options of Tattoo Removal? The methods for tattoo removal can be distinguished into 2 groups, namely ablative and non-ablative tattoo removal procedures. Ablative or “Do Not Care” Tattoo Removal or the History of Tattoo Removal If you are in a hurry, unwilling to pay the expense of modern, long process of laser tattoo removal and above all willing to accept scars as a trade for tattoo removal  (I call this attitude I don’t care" the old, ablative treatment is the way to go. In such treatment, the top layer of your skin that contains the tattoo pigments is ablated, and the skin healed with scar tissue. Another option to get a tattoo out is surgical excision.  The main disadvantage of destructive mechanical modalities is the high risk of scarring; hypertrophic scars are common when tissue is removed deeply to extract all of the tattoo pigment. In addition, residual tattoo pigment is standard, and postoperative pain can be significant Salabrasion The oldest method of physical tissue destruction involves abrading the superficial dermis (past the point of bleeding) with coarse granules of common table salt and a moist gauze pad. Salt is then applied to the wound surface and left under the surgical dressing for 24 hours. The upper layer of skin is abraded or “sanded,” and the underlying layers of skin replace the damaged slabs, allowing the pigment to leach out of the skin. Though some authors were enthusiastic about this procedure, including me, residual tattoo pigment often remained after the wound healed, requiring subsequent treatments. I personally, tried this method myself in combination with ablative CO2 lasers with resultant scar tissue formation and incomplete removal of pigments Dermabrasion Dermabrasion is the primary method of mechanical tissue destruction. To remove as much tattoo pigment as possible, a rapidly spinning diamond fraise wheel. The procedure tends to be bloody. Tissue and blood particulates, of a size that can access pulmonary and mucosal surfaces, are aerosolized into the operative suite and may carry infectious agents. Subsequent scarring is worse if complete pigment removal is attempted in one session by creating a wound to the full depth of the tattoo pigment. Removing tissue only to the extent of the papillary dermis minimizes scarring but leaves significant tattoo pigment, requiring additional procedures that increase the scarring potential. To enhance efficacy, gentian violet or tannic acid and silver nitrate are applied to the superficially abraded surface Side effects and complications of this procedure are skin discoloration (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation) at the treatment site, infection of the tattoo site, incomplete pigment removal, or scarring, even 3–6 months after the tattoo is removed. Chemical Tissue Destruction In 1888, Variot first described the use of caustic chemicals (tannic acid and silver nitrate) after disruption of the skin surface with punctures and incisions. This technique, known as the French method, results in a scar that is less coarse than that from the application of more destructive chemicals but often leaves variable amounts of residual tattoo pigment. A combination of superficial dermabrasion and a form of tannic acid also resulted in hypertrophic scarring in 34% of patients and remaining tattoo in patients with deep tattoo pigment. Intradermal injection of tannic acid by using reciprocating needles results in epidermal and superficial dermal slough and has the same risks as other destructive modalities. Phenol solution, used in the same manner as in facial peels, and trichloroacetic acid in a 95% solution remove tattoos but result in hypopigmented scars. Repeat application is hazardous and may result in a full thickness burn that requires skin grafting. Thermal Tissue Destruction Thermal injury via fire, hot coals, and cigarettes has been used for centuries to try to remove unwanted tattoos, usually with significant scarring. Thermal cautery, with a glowing soldering iron or an electrical spark for electrodesiccation or electrocautery, is equally crude and unpredictable. The infrared coagulator, developed in West Germany in 1979, delivers a noncoherent, multispectral light with preset pulses triggered by an electronic timer. This instrument attempts to produce a more controlled cutaneous thermal injury that treats cutaneous vascular lesions and tattoos. A tungsten halogen light is the energy source, and it emits light with wavelengths of 400-2700 nm and a maximum emission near the infrared range at 900-960 nm. At this range, the primary tissue chromophores are water and oxygenated hemoglobin; however, when exogenous black and blue tattoo pigments predominate as target chromophores, a nonspecific thermal burn from heat absorption occurs. In general, dermatology, liquid nitrogen (-196 °C), is used to destroy superficial cutaneous lesions, but it is not useful in tattoo removal because the nonspecific destruction leads to prolonged healing and unpredictable results. However, successful treatment has been described, two 30-second, freeze-thaw cycles for the treatment of digital tattoos. Surgical Excision Surgical excision of skin containing tattoo pigment is also conventional but often results in incomplete tattoo removal, tissue distortion, and scarring because of limitations in wound closure and healing. Small tattoos located in areas of adequate skin laxity that allow primary closure without excessive tension can be satisfactorily removed with simple excision and the benefit of only a single treatment. However, this situation rarely occurs, and complicated wound closures, skin grafting, multiple-staged extractions, and the use of tissue expanders are often necessary to repair the tissue defect created by excision. The efficacy of this technique is highly dependent upon the individual surgeon, the size of the area to be resected, the tension of the skin in the area, and the individual’s tendencies toward scarring or developing a keloid. Fighting Climate Change / Global Warming: Limit Your Meat Intake or Become a Vegetarian
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM:
To raise livestock appropriately and ethically requires a vast amount of space. To live a decent and happy life, livestock need space to roam and graze. Grazers, such as cows and sheep require large open fields to graze, relatively free of obstacles or obstructions. Over the years, farmers have found the best way to achieve this amount of space, is to clear cut forests and eliminate natural areas. Removing all the trees and other flora is not only devastating to the local wildlife, being left with no where to live, it also increases the risk of global warming by eliminating natural carbon sinks.
Trees and plants are carbon filters: they absorb carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen. Through photosynthesis, a plant or tree absorbs carbon dioxide in the air and use the sun’s energy to convert it, as well as water and other minerals, into oxygen, something every living creature needs to breathe. While not only supporting the survival of all living beings, plants and trees also help prevent global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, thus reducing the amount of this green house gas that will reach the atmosphere and contribute to global warming. A mature tree, depending on its size, can absorb up to 48 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. That may not seem like very much but take into account the number of trees in a forest.
Farming practices are destroying forests and vastly reducing the number of trees and fauna. With fewer trees and plants, more carbon dioxide remains in our atmosphere, causing global warming to escalate. To add to this, livestock produce a much more potent greenhouse gas in their waste. Methane isn’t as common or as long lasting as carbon dioxide, but it is a greenhouse gas that has about 34 times the heat trapping capacity of carbon dioxide. Grass grazers, cows in particular, produce methane in their waste which is immediately absorbed into the atmosphere, providing a massive boost to global warming.
Tumblr media
How Much Land is Required for Livestock?
Each animal has its own requirements when it comes to space. Generally speaking, more space is better for their well-being, but below are some general size estimates:
Cows require between 1-2 acres of open field space per bovine for unencumbered grazing. This does not include barn space.
The space requirements for pigs is more based on their weight and size, and there are multiple opinions of the correct amount. On average, roughly ½ an acre of open space is used per 8-9 average sized pigs.
Chickens require a specific amount of coop space as well as a specific amount of free roaming space. The general rule is that each chicken requires roughly 4 square feet of coop space and around 10 square feet of open space.
How Much Natural Land and Forests Have we Lost to Farming Practices?
According to National Geographic, current world food production, crops and livestock included, takes up almost half of the planet’s land. Over 40% of the Earth’s land has now been taken over by agriculture.  An area roughly the size of South America is being used for crop production while an additional 7.9 – 8.9 billion acres (3.2 – 3.6 billion hectares) are being used for raising livestock. Much of this land originally consisted of rain forests and natural landscapes with a rich diversity of wildlife.
How much Methane Does Livestock Produce?
Cattle are the main producers of methane, through both their waste and gas. A single cow can produce somewhere around 70 to 120 kilograms of methane per year. Worldwide, there are roughly 1.5 billion cattle to meet current food production demands. This, coupled with additional methane emissions from other livestock, means that current agricultural practices are responsible for around 14.5% of the total greenhouse gases released worldwide, according to the Guardian.
WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT #1: Limit Your Meat Intake
For people who have been eating meat their entire lives, it’s very difficult to simply stop. This is understandable, humans are, after all omnivores. But reducing the environmental impacts of livestock farming does not necessitate the end of all meat consumption.
The main concern, according to several dietary experts, is that most meat-eating humans around the world over consume the amount of meat the average body needs. This is either done by eating overly large portions per sitting or too frequently during the week. Because of the impact of livestock farming on the environment, this pattern of excessive meat consumption around the world is rapidly impacting the health of our planet. To add to this, overindulgence in meat products can also have detrimental affects on one’s health. A diet that’s mostly dependant on meat protein doesn’t give the human body all the nutrients it requires and often leads to multiple health concerns.
Tumblr media
How Much Meat Should a Person Eat per Week for a Sustainable Diet?
There are different opinions on the exact amount of meat a person should consume per week. The recommendation is to find a diet that balances meat products and plant-based sources containing the same nutrients for a sustainable and healthy diet. New Scientist suggests, as a diet with limited meat consumption, that the average person should eat roughly 50g of red meat and 40g of white meat per day, the equivalent of one hamburger and one small chicken breast every two days. The rest should be plant-based.
What Are the Nutrients are in Meat That We Require?
Meat has a lot of different nutrients that the body requires daily, but these nutrients can also be found in many other sources. Only one key nutrient, a specific type of omega-3 fatty acid, can be found exclusively in fish, but there are supplements available as an alternative. Here are the main nutrients found in meat products:
PROTEIN
Proteins are the building blocks of your body. They help maintain healthy skin, bones, muscles and organs. Protein also builds amino acids which is used to build cells, enzymes, antibodies, muscles, tendons, organs and skin, as well as hormones, neurotransmitters and various tiny molecules that serve many important functions.
CALCIUM
Calcium is needed to help build and keep bones and teeth strong
IRON
Iron is a crucial part of red blood cells and helps prevent anemia.
VITAMIN B6 AND B12
B Vitamins are necessary to produce red blood cells, prevent anemia and support nervous system function.
VITAMIN A
Vitamin A is important for human vision, the immune system and helping with the proper growth and development of babies in the womb.
VITAMIN D
Vitamin D plays an important role in bone health. It’s also needed to help absorb calcium.
ZINC
Zinc is a mineral that helps form protein, is an essential part of enzymes, is used by cells to fight off bacteria and viruses and to make genetic material (DNA), helps to heal wounds, helps the human’s sense of smell and taste, and is important for growth, especially for children and infants.
OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS
Omega-3s are important parts of the body’s cell membranes, and they help with the functioning of the heart, lungs, immune system, and hormone system. There are three main types of omega-3s the human body requires:
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) (only found in fish/shellfish)
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (only found in fish/shellfish)

WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT #2: Become a Vegetarian
Tumblr media
What Types of Vegetarians Are There?
There are many variations to the vegetarian diet, and each one is flexible. Below are some of the most common types of vegetarians:
LACTO-VEGETARIAN
A lacto-vegetarian is one that doesn’t eat any form of white or red meat, fish (including shellfish), poultry or fowl or eggs but will still consume dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt.
OVO-VEGETARIAN
An ovo-vegetarian is one that doesn’t eat any type of white or red meat, fish (including shellfish), poultry or fowl and no dairy products of any kind. However, they will consume eggs.
LACTO-OVO VEGETARIANS
As the name suggest, and the most common type of vegetarian today, these types of vegetarians are a combination of ovo- and lacto-vegetarians, meaning they don’t eat any type of white or red meat, fish (including shellfish), poultry or fowl but will consume both eggs and dairy products.
PESCATARIAN (PESCETARIAN)
Pescatarians are considered “semi-vegetarians” since their diet does not exclude all types of meat, only restricts it. While still not consuming red or white meat, poultry or fowl, they will eat all types of fish and seafood. Some will include dairy products and eggs as well in this diet.
POLLOTARIAN
Similar to a pescatarian as a “semi-vegetarian” diet, pollotarians don’t consume red or white meat or fish (including shellfish) but do allow the consumption of poultry and fowl exclusively. Including dairy and egg products are up to the pollotarian.
What Do I Need to Know About Becoming a Vegetarian?
To become a healthy vegetarian, you have to know a lot about eating an appropriate diet that provides all the nutrients your body requires, how much of each and in which foods you can find them. Then, you must plan your diet accordingly to ensure that you don’t become malnourished in any way. The best way to accomplish this is by speaking to a dietitian or doing your own research. There are over the counter supplements available for many nutrients, should finding food sources prove difficult, but be sure to do careful research into product offerings before choosing one as some are more effective than others. There is a rough guide provided above for beginning vegetarians on the basic nutrients people require when choosing to not eat meat and some non-meat based sources they can be found in. (refer to “How Much of Each of the Above Nutrients Does a Person Need in a Day and What Other Sources Besides Meat Contain Them?”)

The red colour of travertine and its different intensity is due to the presence of iron carbonate. TRAVERTINE QUARRIES AND SUPPLY
About 50 years ago, until the 1969s, We are the main supplier of travertine and had a monopoly on the market. The most famous quarries in Italy are in Guidonia Montecelio and in Tivoli, while the name of the latter district and the word travertine have the same origin from the Latin word tiburtinus through the Italian travertino. The natural stone was quarried in Italy since Ancient Roman times and was used primarily as building material. Nowadays, significant travertine suppliers are Turkey, Mexico, Peru and Iran. There are two-three small producers in the USA, in its western part and the most famous place for travertine formation, that is also visited by many tourists is Yellowstone National Park. There are also two parks dedicated to this natural stone in Oklahoma.

One of the most distinctive and preferred features of travertine is its weathered and rustic look, which makes it the perfect stone if you want to recreate this romantic atmosphere at your home. As it is a porous stone, travertine tiles are offered in two variants – filled and unfilled. The filled ones are smoother, more durable and have a more modern look compared to the natural porous ones. The finishing of the tile is also important as it highlights one or another quality of this excellent material.
MOST EFFECTIVE USAGES OF TRAVERTINE
• Travertine, however, is mostly popular as tiles used for floors, walls, backsplashes or counter tops. Its qualities and aesthetic values make it a preferred material both for indoor and outdoor projects. It is often chosen for paving patios or constructing garden paths. You can browse through the great variety of travertine.
• Travertine is a natural stone like Marble, Granite, Onyx, Limestone, Slate etc. The key differences between Travertine and other natural stones stems from the way they are formed. The stone themselves have very different properties such as the hardness of the stone and the appearance.
• Travertine is formed in hot springs and/or limestone caves. It is formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate. In other words, a chemical soup very high in concentration of calcium carbonate precipitates off the liquid and the remaining chemical soup hardens and is compressed into the travertine stone we have today. Kind of like a natural concrete in that you have a soupy mixture that hardens.
• Travertine is not the same as Marble, Granite or Limestone which falls in the metamorphic rock category. Key characteristics of Travertine stone are the holes within the stone which are caused by carbon dioxide evasion or CO2 bubbles in the mixture as it is setting. Metamorphic rock is a rock that has undergone changes through usually pressure and heat. It causes the rock to change or go through a metamorphosisthat often forms crystals in the rock giving granite that sparkling look.
• Travertine has been used for centuries as a building material. The most famous structure built with it is the Coliseum in Rome, Italy but there are tens of thousands of buildings travertine has been used to construct. One of the most recent famous
• The key difference between the two stones is how they are formed. Marble is formed when limestone comes under high pressures and temperatures. Travertine, on the other hand, is formed under additional high pressures and temperatures too, however travertine is formed in hot springs and limestone caves.
• Its beauty and durability make travertine tiles perfect for floors and walls inside the home. Here are the Pros and Cons of Travertine Tiles. The first pro to travertine tiles is the cost. It is about twice the price of other comparable natural stones like marble and yet has very similar durability.
• Travertine is an especially attractive form of limestone that forms around mineral spring deposits. As a flooring material, travertine is typically sold in tile form and comes in a variety of earth tone colors, including tans, browns, rust, and beige.
• Travertine is one of several natural stones that are used for paving patios and garden paths. It is sometimes known as travertine limestone or travertine marble; these are the same stone, although travertine is classified properly as a type of limestone.
• Travertine is a terrestrial sedimentary rock, formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals from solution in ground and surface waters, or geothermally heated hot-springs. Similar but softer and extremely porous deposits formed from ambient-temperature water are known as tufa.
COST EFFECTIVE
Travertine is a mid-range stone in terms of cost, but this puts it at the high-end in the entire range of flooring materials. A travertine floor averages about $15 per square foot for materials plus labor. Marble, by comparison, averages around $20 per square foot, and granite averages around $12 per square foot. Laminate flooring, at the low end of all flooring materials, can be professionally installed for less than $5 per square foot. Like other natural stone, though, travertine flooring can vary substantially in price—from as low as $3 to as high as $30 per square foot, depending on the quality and finish of the stone. Finishes can range from a natural texture the least expensive to a honed, polished and sealed surface the most pricey.
MAINTANCE AND REPAIR
Maintaining travertine is paradoxically both complicated and simple. Like other natural stone, travertine has microscopic pores that can allow spilled liquids and staining agents to penetrate. This problem can be prevented by applying a penetrating sealer, followed by a barrier surface sealer. This dual treatment needs to be applied during installation, then periodically reapplied throughout the life of the floor. If you want to maintain a glossy surface, more regular resealing will be necessary. But if it is kept properly sealed, travertine is quite simple to clean, requiring only simple damp mopping with a mild soap solution.
This involves carefully breaking up and removing the damaged tile, scraping the subfloor, then installing a new tile with thin-set adhesive, and grouting the joints. If the surrounding floor has weathered, however, the patched area may not match exactly for some time.
DESIGNS FOR TRAVERTINE
Travertine is one of the oldest building materials in existence, and a floor made with travertine adds a sense of age and prestige to the home. At the same time, it has inherently dominant energy that draws attention in a subtle, subdued way, with mild tones found swirling in its hazy, shifting surface effects. Each piece is also a nature-formed work of earth art, creating a one-of-a-kind installation.
Thanks to its soft palette of colors, travertine maintains a reserved dignity that is much more subtle than granite or marble. Available in tans and beiges, grays, and speckled off-white hues, these tiles can bring the towering dominance of earth to a flooring installation without overwhelming a room with dramatic colors.
Travertine Flooring Installation
Like other stone tiles, travertine flooring is installed in much the same way as ceramic tile. A layer of cement board underlayment is applied over the subfloor, then the stone tiles are laid with thin-set adhesive, and finally, the joints are filled with grout. Grouting can be tricky with travertine if the tiles have not been sealed since the grout can stain the material. When using unsealed tiles, it's best to apply a sealer before grouting.
While the installation techniques are similar to those for ceramic tile, travertine poses some unique difficulties. Because this material is very heavy, the floor structure must be strong and stiff enough to support the flooring without excessive bowing or flexing.
Structural reinforcement is sometimes necessary. Travertine is a very hard stone, and ordinary tile-cutting tools are not sufficient to cut it. Instead, a power wet saw equipped with a diamond blade is used. Because of these difficulties, installing travertine is not a popular DIY project; the work is usually left to professionals. If you're installing a new floor, be sure to keep a few extra tiles so you can make perfectly color-matched repairs in the future.

What’s the Best Time to Take Vitamins?
Tumblr media
You wake up, stretch, and focus on your day before heading into the kitchen to start your morning routine. Along with a tall glass of water, perhaps herbal tea and a nutritious breakfast, you get pumped for the day by beginning your supplement regime. But have you ever wondered when you should take each vitamin or mineral? Does it matter if you take it before, during, or after eating — and which meal?
We’ve got you covered with this comprehensive guide on the best time to take the most common minerals, vitamins, and supplements. Read on to learn more.
What Are Water & Fat-Soluble Vitamins?
Experts classify vitamins by how they behave in your body.
Many are water-soluble, which means they dissolve in water. Rather than getting stored in the body, you excrete any excess. As a general rule, take water-soluble vitamins on an empty stomach. You need to have a regular supply of these vitamins from your diet — or supplements — to keep enough in your system.
Fat-soluble vitamins, naturally, dissolve in fats (lipids). Your liver stores any excess. Sometimes excess gets stored in the body’s fat, as well. Generally, you want to take fat-soluble vitamins with a meal.
When Should I Take A Multivitamin?
Many people take vitamins to address gaps in their nutrition. A multivitamin ensures you have a broad spectrum of nutrients even if your diet is lacking in certain areas. As the name suggests, multivitamins contain a multitude of vitamins and minerals. They usually include vitamins A, C, D, E, plus B-vitamins. Most multivitamins also include essential minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, and more.
Some of the vitamins in a multivitamin formulation need to be taken with food. Taking it with your breakfast makes it easy to remember. Just make sure your breakfast contains some fats, or your body will not properly absorb the fat-soluble vitamins.
When Should I Take Water-Soluble Vitamins?
Your body absorbs water-soluble vitamins best on an empty stomach. Ideally, take them 20 to 30 minutes before a meal, whether breakfast or lunch. Alternatively, you can consume water-soluble vitamins two hours after a meal. If you take them with a meal or close to one, you may experience reduced absorption.
B12 & B-Vitamin Complex
You can find water-soluble B vitamins in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A B-complex supplement usually contains all eight B vitamins:
B1 or thiamine
B2 or riboflavin
B3 or niacin
B5 or pantothenic acid
B6 or pyridoxine
B7 or biotin
B9 or folate (folic acid)
B12 or cobalamin
B vitamins play many roles in the body, including supporting brain health and are essential for energy production throughout the body.[1] They often act as coenzymes, which means that they work with enzymes to help break down and build up molecules. Vitamin B12 is a particularly important nutrient for metabolism, energy, and mood.
If you can, take B vitamins first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This helps energize you for the day ahead. Some people find if they take them too late at night, it affects their sleep and produces vivid dreams.[2]
Vitamin C
Vitamin C, sometimes called ascorbic acid, can be found naturally in citrus fruits, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, papaya, and other fruits and vegetables. Vitamin C is essential for good health and for maintaining a healthy immune system. It helps improve the body's absorption of iron, so if you take an iron supplement, consume vitamin C as well.
You'll lose excess vitamin C through urination since your body will not store it. Take vitamin C on an empty stomach at least 20 to 30 minutes before eating. If you find that it upsets your stomach, you can take it with food.[3]
When Should I Take Fat-Soluble Vitamins?
When you take a fat-soluble vitamin, it gets packaged in the small intestines in a “chylomicron,” a droplet of fat that contains the vitamin. After getting absorbed into the cells lining the intestines, the vitamin package gets sent to the liver or body fat for storage. When needed, the fat-soluble vitamin gets metabolized by the enzyme lipase.[4]
Vitamins A, D, and E are all fat-soluble and should be taken with meals to aid their absorption. Generally, it’s best to take them with your evening meal, especially one that contains healthy fats or oils. These help you better absorb the vitamins.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a hormone that plays a role in cell growth, immune function, and the neuromuscular system. Unlike most vitamins, the body can make its own vitamin D, but when your skin is not exposed to enough sunshine, you may become low or deficient.
Vitamin D also helps the body absorb calcium, keeping your bones strong and healthy. You will only find vitamin D in a few plant-based food sources, so we recommend supplementation.[5]
Since vitamin D is fat-soluble, take it with your largest meal to improve absorption.[6] Also, take vitamin D with calcium as it helps your body absorb the mineral more effectively.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is essential for eye and skin health. Your body cannot produce it, so if you don’t have an adequate supply of vitamin A-rich foods like dark leafy vegetables, carrots, and pumpkins in your diet, you’ll need to supplement.[7]
The best time to take your vitamin A supplement is with an evening meal containing fat to aid absorption.[8]
Because vitamin A is fat-soluble, do not take more than the recommended daily allowance. Some evidence suggests that excess vitamin A can lead to weaker bones in older individuals. Be mindful that omega-3 fatty acid supplements and multivitamins often contain vitamin A, so keep tabs on your consumption.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is also essential for skin health, as well as protecting and strengthening the body’s immune system. It’s a powerful antioxidant.[9] Nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils are the best natural sources of vitamin E.
As a fat-soluble vitamin, consume vitamin E with fat-containing foods.[9] You can take vitamin E with vitamins A and C, as well as selenium. If you are low or deficient in iron, taking vitamin E has been shown to not only improve iron tolerance but also to improve the gut microbiome in the intestinal tract.[10]
Minerals
Although minerals are often lumped together with vitamins, they are distinct. Unlike vitamins, minerals are inorganic and come from rocks, soil, and water. They support a multitude of biological processes that keep us healthy.
The body needs some minerals in trace amounts, like zinc, iron, and copper. You need macrominerals in larger amounts, including potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
Calcium & Magnesium
Calcium helps you maintain a strong skeleton. Your body stores calcium in the bones and teeth. This mineral also plays a role in your muscular and nervous systems — including the brain.[11] Kale, broccoli, and Chinese cabbage are excellent plant-based sources of calcium.
Experts recommend that you take calcium and magnesium together because these two macrominerals work together. You should take them in a 2:1 ratio of calcium to magnesium. Global Healing’s IntraCal® provides calcium and magnesium in this ultra-absorbable ideal ratio.
It’s a good idea to split your dose by taking it with your morning, lunch, and evening meals.[11]
You can take calcium orotate or calcium citrate on an empty stomach, but calcium carbonate must be taken with food so stomach acid helps break it down. However, calcium carbonate is little more than chalk and is the least helpful calcium you can take. Calcium orotate is the best, most highly absorbed supplement.
Don’t take a calcium supplement with iron or zinc, as they inhibit its absorption. Do take calcium with vitamin D — the latter helps with the absorption of the former.
Zinc
Zinc plays an important role in cell division, wound healing, and cellular functioning.[12, 13]Zinc is found in many plant sources. However, plant-based zinc often occurs along with phytic acid, which can inhibit its absorption. That means that vegans or vegetarians taking zinc often need to take more.
Take zinc with a meal; some people get an upset stomach if zinc is consumed on an empty stomach. Also, take zinc at least two hours apart from iron as well as calcium, as they inhibit the absorption of each other.[13]
Zinc is helpful to your immune system when you feel a runny nose and sniffles coming on, or anytime you first feel that little tingle in your throat. It gets you feeling better in no time.
Iron
Iron, an essential mineral, helps form the hemoglobin in your blood, a molecule that carries oxygen throughout the body.[14] This mineral supports brain development, muscle metabolism, and cellular functioning.
Take iron with food because it can cause digestive issues when taken on an empty stomach. Some people like to take their iron supplement with orange juice because the antioxidant nature of vitamin C can increase the absorption of iron.[15]
Iodine
Iodine is a trace element that regulates thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) in the body.[16] On top of its role in hormone production and metabolism, iodine helps detoxify the thyroid by displacing harmful “halogens” like chlorine, fluorine, and bromine.
Many people do not get enough iodine, and low iodine can lead to many health issues.
Like zinc, the best time to take both iodine supplements is at mealtimes — or a few minutes before — because some people get upset stomachs when taking it on an empty stomach.
Other Supplements
Many people take supplements other than vitamins and minerals. Two of the most popular ones include probiotics and omega-3 fatty acids, so we will break down the best time to take them.
Probiotics
Probiotics are friendly bacteria that populate the gut. They’re linked to healthy skin, better digestion, a sound mind, and a happy mood, among other things.[17]
Probiotics fall into two main groups; transient probiotics that pass through your system and resident strains that live in your gut. Transient probiotics like Latero-Flora™ are best while cleansing the body, as they target harmful organisms.
Other probiotic strains take up residence in the gut, helping your body in a symbiotic way. A good supplement contains multiple strains with up to 75 billion CFUs, like Floratrex™.
All probiotics should be taken 20 minutes before eating a morning meal. Ideally, eat a morning meal that contains fats, as many probiotic strains survive longer when transported to the stomach with lipids.[18] This enables them to bypass stomach acid, which may otherwise destroy them, and reach the intestines, where they can establish themselves.
You might wonder if you can take a probiotic at the same time as other supplements, and the answer is yes. In fact, taking a probiotic along with your omega-3 fatty acid supplement can improve its effectiveness.
Omega-3s
Essential fatty acids include omega-3 and omega-6, which are not produced by your body and need to be sourced from your diet or with supplements. They help protect your heart and brain.[19]
Omega-3s are found in oils, nuts, and seeds. If you decide to take an omega-3 supplement, look for a plant-based option like flaxseed oil or algae oil.
The best time to take it is later in the day as they should be taken with foods containing fat. Since the breakfast meal often contains lower fat than other meals, try taking omega- 3s with the lunch or evening meal.[20] If you do take the omega-3 with breakfast, include some fat with your meal.
You can take omega-3s with vitamin D. Vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids work together to affect serotonin production, a hormone that influences happiness.[21]
Points to Remember
Taking your vitamin and mineral supplements at the right time optimizes their absorption, which better supports your total health and wellness.
Some vitamins, like vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble and need to be taken with food — often with fats — to increase their absorption or to prevent stomach problems.
Other vitamins, like vitamin C, work best when taken on an empty stomach. Calcium is best when split up into two or three different times during the day.
Some vitamins and minerals have adverse reactions when taken together, like zinc and iron, and can prevent proper absorption of either. It’s a good idea to take these two minerals separately.
To prevent any problems that could arise from an over ingestion of a particular vitamin, keep notes on your daily supplement regime, and read the labels carefully.

93 Percent Stardust (Rogue One Daemon AU, 1)
I was asked to do this ages ago by @daceymormont, so of course I chose to start on this like three days before I’m due to give birth. What can I say? I have great timing. So, if you can’t tell, that means my updating of this will be spotty. I wanted to at least get this part up though, as I think it sets the stage for everything. I’m also unsure if this is going to be a Fix It fic or if I’ve going to leave it to end as it did in canon. That would be really rude of me, wouldn’t it? Notes on the daemons below. More will come as the characters are introduced in the story. I’m still kind of figuring out where this is going. This will be under the tag “rogue daemons”.
Summary: Cassian’s daemon settles when he is six years-old, almost completely unheard of, and Jyn’s when she is eight. They’re light years apart from one another, souls born of the same loss, but in time, they will come together to do the most extraordinary things in the name of rebellion. (Or, Rogue One with daemons, plus extra scenes.)
We have calcium in our bones, iron in our veins, carbon in our souls, and nitrogen in our brains. 93 percent stardust, with souls made of flames, we are all just stars that have people names. – Nikita Gill
No one said anything directly to him, but everyone knew the truth regardless: his daemon had settled and at such a painfully young age too.
People didn’t talk about it, especially the daemon superstitious inhabitants of Fest, but there were whispers. Some said that a person was damaged if their daemon settled too young. They were still growing, still learning about the world, still figuring out who they were. To have their soul settle before the proper age meant that there was something very off. The child was stunted. They would never even have the chance to mature into something more, as if their daemon’s settling would imprint on them forever.
Cassian’s daemon settled when he was six years-old.
As the years pass, he will barely be able to recall a time when his Amaya was not settled as one form. It would have been nice if she could change, seeing as how he would become a spy later on, but no, the second he stepped into his deadly silent home, he felt his entire world shift. His very being was glass and it was shattered as his mother’s blood seeped to the soles of his shoes and then it reformed into something else, jagged, cold, irreparably broken.
Amaya dug her claws into his shoulder, buried her face in his neck, and he clung to her tightly as he stared at the horrific scene before him. Mama dead, golden dust coating her like snow. Tia dead, a pile of dust at her feet like ashes. Papa dead, a trail of dust from Mama to him. Amaya was the only daemon in the house left. All the others had been reduced to nothing but what stars were made of.
And when the people saw him stumble out of the house, so tiny and fragile, shivering despite the heavy coat, his daemon’s head peeking out, they knew.
Settled, they whispered to each other, and only six. It was unheard of. Fest was by no means a comfortable place and they were in the beginning stages of a rebellion, but no one had ever known a child’s daemon to settle so early. Instead of reaching out to comfort the small child, people stepped away from him, giving him a wide berth, as he wandered aimlessly in the street.
Only when Amaya bit his hand did Cassian finally stop and look down at her. It was then that he noticed that she hadn’t changed for a while, despite her current form being something that he’d only seen once before.
“Oh,” was the only thing he could think to say.
Brown black eyes with a hint of red gazed up at him. “Cassian.” She curled up against his neck and he could feel her little heart beating against his skin. She was warm, her fur coarse and stiff like the brush his mama would chase him around the house with. “You’re tracking blood and dust.”
It had nothing to do with what was transpiring between and inside of them and yet the statement was the final nail in the coffin. He knew in his bones that she had settled and so, in a way, had he. Nothing would ever be the same. There would be no coming back from this.
*
It was strange that life on the run was better than life on Coruscant. On Lah’mu, the Erso struggled and toiled in their attempts to completely reinvent themselves – Galen and Lyra were not natural born farmers despite their backgrounds in science – but it was somehow easier there. It was nicer to stress over plants than political intrigue and insidious whispers. They were still looking over their shoulders, of course – that would never go away – but smiles and laughter came easier to them and more frequently in time.
Jyn’s Felix was a burst of energy, a bright spot on an otherwise dreary and rainy planet. After leaving Coruscant and landing in their new home, he was filled with joy, bringing smiles even to his parents’ tired and battered daemons. Before, he had been so timid that he very rarely spoke unless he was alone with Jyn, but on Lah’mu, he ran around the house, slipping into one form after the next, causing Jyn to laugh delightfully and her parents to smile and touch each other.
Somehow, in the darkness, her daemon brought them all together again, reminds them what they were fighting for. Running and hiding didn’t seem so bad when a child was happy.
While her parents slept, Jyn sometimes liked to crawl outside to look at the stars. Felix always encouraged this slightly rebellious nature of hers. They had to tiptoe silently around her mother’s Leopold and father’s Evangeline, both of whom slept in different places of the house, but they’d learned how quickly. Back on Coruscant, they were kept away from everything and everyone. It was a luxurious place that the two saw little of. Not so much here. There were very few people, but Jyn had always tended to stay away from others out of some ingrained cautious nature anyways.
The stars though… The stars took her breath away. She could stare up at the night sky for hours and feel like she was up there with them. They were the same and yet always different. Some nights, she swore that a star that was once there was gone the next. It was magical. She could not remember the stars ever being so bright on another planet. Maybe it was because there weren’t nearly as many buildings or blinding lights on the ground.
Felix would shift into a bird, flying higher and higher, pushing their bond to its limits, a black speck in the sky, hiding lights as he passed over her head, before bulleting to her and practically crashing into her open arms and nuzzling into her chest.
Pressing her face into his fur now that he was a black cat, Jyn smiled proudly. “You went so far!”
“It hurt,” Felix whined, but that never stopped him. He was as adventurous as she was, ready to push everything to the limit as much as a child could. “Evangeline can get much further.”
“She and Papa have had more practice,” Jyn pointed out, though she wasn’t sure that was the reason.
Back when her father was working on Coruscant, his and Evangeline’s bond seemed different from her mother’s and Leopold’s. While her mother and daemon stuck close to one another, her father’s relationship with his daemon felt almost…distant. Not cold, never like that, just like something was coming in between them. They were getting better now though. Sometimes, Evangeline curled up on his collarbone to sleep at night. She never did that before as far as Jyn could remember.
“Do you think we’ll stay here for long?” Felix asked abruptly. He shifted into the form of a Rottweiler puppy and laid in a ball at her side.
Jyn laid back down in the dirt so that he could prop his head on her stomach and smoothed a hand down his back. She loved it when he was soft and dark like this. “Papa says the plants should appear soon.” She gazed up at the stars. “We’re going to be farmers. They plant their roots and stay, so we will too.”
But she couldn’t help but feel like she was being drawn upwards into the stars, like she could reach her arms up and be pulled to them. As much as she liked it here on Lah’mu compared to Coruscant, as happy as she was, she still had trouble with the concept of home. They’d gone to a lot of places. Maybe a part of her would never feel like she had stopped running. Maybe it was why Felix had so much energy in him.
*
It struck Cassian as both curious and suspicious that he was one of the few children in the small orphanage set up by the Rebellion whose daemon was already settled. All of these children had lost their parents somehow, hadn’t they? And yet, for the most part, their daemons weren’t settled. In fact, at nine, he was the youngest one with a settled daemon. The closest one to him was eleven and he found out that her daemon only had settled a few weeks before.
For the first time, it occurred to him that what happened to Amaya might not have been normal.
On Fest, he had been around children whose daemons were settled. None as young as him, of course, but daemons tended to settle quickly on harsh planets like his. The time to grow up came before any of them knew it. Nine or ten was a common settling age. It had never been an issue with the other kids on his home planet. Despite his age and size, they saw him as stronger, fiercer, although it helped that he was willing to pelt stormtroopers with rocks at only seven while other kids scampered.
Here though, his Amaya caused people to look at him warily. He didn’t like it. Whenever they were in a large group of people, he clung to her closely or she would hide under his shirt. It wasn’t cold here, not like Fest, and he felt strangely bare without a jacket. Amaya could hide easier in a jacket or even rest partially in his hood with her front paws and head resting on his shoulder. They had to learn new ways, although Cassian  had always been quick at adjusting and changing tactics.
But when he was surrounded by other children, Cassian couldn’t help but notice the way adults’ eyes would jump right over him, like he and his daemon were a sore spot that they didn’t want to see. It only took a few months for him to realize that he wasn’t going to be adopted. He watched other kids come and go, swooped up into a family, while he stayed behind. It should’ve made him bitter, but he had Amaya. She would whisper things to him in Festian that made him feel a little more at ease and never strayed far from him.
By the time Cassian was twelve, he was already doing odd jobs around the base for the Rebellion. He was too young to go on actual missions, despite insisting that he could do it, so he did whatever he could. Too many years had passed for him to believe that he might one day have a family of his own again. His family was dead and their daemons were dust. Already he was beginning to forget simple things about them. It was the price of getting older. Besides, he couldn’t look back. There wasn’t the time.
Also at twelve, he could blend in easier with the other kids on base. A lot more kids had settled daemons at that age. People didn’t look at him like he caused them pain. He and Amaya were just two more victims of collateral damage from the war. They didn’t see a damaged kid. They didn’t know when Amaya had settled, just that she was, and no one questioned it and he never said.
It was the beginning of his understanding at how easy it was to trick people.
All he had to do was smile and deflect and soldiers saw a child growing up under some difficult circumstances that was trying his best. They didn’t know that his entire family had been slaughtered and he was only alive because he’d forgotten to come back home for lunch while playing with some other kids. They didn’t know of how he’d tracked his mother’s blood and her daemon’s dust for a quarter of a mile after he’d found their bodies at home.
They didn’t know anything about him. He could make up whatever he wanted to and they’d believe it. He told people that Amaya was all sorts of things and because they didn’t know any better about the animals they believed him. The two of them would speak only in Festian sometimes, convincing people that she had never learned Basic, and they believed it every time. He told people that she settled when he was nine, ten, eleven. No one even blinked.
“Isn’t lying bad?” Amaya asked once. “That’s what your mamá said.”
She’s dead, Cassian couldn’t help but think and Amaya never asked again.
But not them. Their family was gone, their old life gone, Fest gone, everything – but they were still alive. They had survived. It had to be for something. He could feel it in his bones.

Jyn had to flatten herself to the ground and hide amongst the tall plants to avoid being spotted by a swooping owl. It was only thanks to Felix tugging at her that she noticed the daemon in time. He curled underneath her in the form of a gecko as she laid belly down in the dirt, his little heart beating fast. The owl flew over them though and landed gracefully on the shoulder’s of the man in white.
From where she was hiding, she could only see her papa, but she knew that his Evangeline was with him. A part of her wanted to ask what the salamander had whispered in Felix’s ears, but she didn’t ask. She and her daemon never kept secrets from one another, but whatever he had been told had made him shift into a quivering mouse and it had frightened her more than she wanted to admit.
When she saw her mama running up to them, Jyn’s heart leapt into her throat and she nearly jumped up. Only Felix’s insistence kept her down. The pack her mama was carrying made it awkward for her to run but allowed Leopold to keep up with her much more easily. He slipped through the plants, a furious snarl on his face, and Jyn knew – she just knew in her heart – that something awful was going to happen.
“Oh look, Lyra, back from the dead!” the man called out dryly. “It’s a miracle.”
Her father’s eyes closed, tired, defeated while her mother wore a defiant look on her face still. She was never one to give up. Stubborn and prideful, she would fight until the very end.
“We won’t let you have him,” Leopold growled, just loud enough for Jyn to hear. He had such a bold voice, the kind that could still Jyn and Felix when they were about to do something that they shouldn’t.
It didn’t have quite the same effect on the man in white and his white-faced owl daemon. The two looked at each other, almost pityingly, before turning back to her. “I’m not taking just him, Lyra,” the man said. “I’m taking all of you. Where has that child of yours run off to, hm?”
If the owl had been closer to the ground, Jyn was almost certain that Leopold would’ve leaped to attack it. She was too young to remember their time in the prison where the honey badger daemon had snapped at any other daemon that got too close to Felix or Jyn, but he’d never lost his fierceness or protective nature.
Instead, her mama whipped out a small blaster and pointed it at the man in white. The Death Troopers guarding him all jumped to aim at her and their similar daemons aligned in attack form, but she didn’t hesitate or drop the blaster. She glanced from Jyn’s papa to the man in white, breathing heavily through her nose, and proclaimed defiantly, “You’ll never win.”
“I already have,” the man in white told her with a slight smile on his face.
Her mama shot the blaster at him; the Death Troopers shot theirs at her. Everyone’s shots connected with their designated targets, but only one daemon burst in a cloud of dust.
Jyn startled in her hiding spot, eyes wide with shock. A terrible scream rang in the air that she dimly registered as Evangeline’s, something she’d never heard before, and she watched, trembling on the ground, as her father rushed to her fallen mother. It was too late though. Shiny dust glittered in the air and slowly fell to the earth where Leopold had once stood.
He was gone. Her mother was dead.
Felix let out the tiniest whine as he buried himself into her jacket. She didn’t have time to process the sudden shift in him – a warm tingling feeling that went from her toes to her head – not when the man in white barked out orders to find her and the Death Troopers started to scan the area.
Instead, she crawled backwards out of sight, pulled herself to her feet, and ran as fast as possible, clinging to Felix as tight as she could. He didn’t seem capable of running himself to follow her and so she had to drop her favorite toy Stormy in order to keep a grip on him. When she finally reached the bunker that her father had built for this very reason, she convinced him to wrap around her neck so that she could pull the hatch open, climb inside, and shut the door.
The two of them watched as a pair of Death Troopers swept the cave where she was hiding, her green eyes and his yellow ones, until the hunters left. Only when she was certain that they were gone did she finally climb the rest of the way down the stairs, her legs wobbly and hands slick with sweat and dirt. She banged on a lantern until it came on and then set it to the side to illuminate the small space.
It took Saw Gerrera two days to find them in the hidey hole.
It took her a full day to realize that Felix had settled.
A long, thin, scaly snake with red, yellow, and black bands, all she could think was that he was beautiful, but it confused her as well. He’d never played as a snake before. Some people said that snake daemons were a sign that a person was dangerous or that there was something wrong with them. They couldn’t be trusted. She slid her small hands down his back and he curled into a ball in her lap. She trusted Felix with her life.
He was the only one that she would ever trust fully again because she knew that he was the only one that would never leave her. He would die before he even tried and as would she. They would both be dust before they left the other’s side.
JYN ERSO: coral snake – Felix, means “lucky” CASSIAN ANDOR: indian grey mongoose – Amaya, means “the end” GALEN ERSO: spotted salamander – Evangeline, means “good news” LYRA ERSO: honey badger – Leopold, means “people, bold, lion” ORSON KRENNIC: barn owl – Valda, means “power, rule”

Natural ways to increase hemoglobin in the body
Natural ways to increase hemoglobin in the body Hemoglobin has great importance in the body, which helps in the performance of many different functions, and through natural methods, can increase blood.
Tumblr media
Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein found in red blood cells. These cells are responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. In addition to transferring oxygen, hemoglobin transfers carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs, and then releases carbon dioxide out during breathing. The decrease in hemoglobin therefore makes it difficult for the body to perform these functions. Symptoms of hemoglobin decrease in body If the hemoglobin level of the body is low, some symptoms can be observed, including: Weakness of appetite: inability to eat, nausea and tendency to vomit. Headache: One of the most common symptoms of hemoglobin in the blood is the feeling of headaches, fatigue and dizziness. Shortness of breath: This is due to the lack of blood flow throughout the body naturally. Irregular heartbeat: The heart can also be throbbing with shortness of breath. Methods of increasing blood hemoglobin Through some natural methods, the proportion of hemoglobin in the blood can be increased, namely: Eat iron-rich foods Iron helps to increase hemoglobin production, as well as contributes to the formation of more red blood cells. The most prominent foods rich in iron, which should be included in the daily diet: Meat and fish. Soy products. eggs. Dried fruits such as dates and figs. Broccoli. Leafy vegetables such as spinach and turnips. Green Beans. Nuts. Peanut Butter. In the case of a severe reduction in the proportion of iron in the body, the doctor can recommend iron supplements. 2. Eat foods high in folic acid Folic acid is a type of vitamin B and plays a key role in the production of hemoglobin. Folate is used to produce heme, a component of hemoglobin that helps carry oxygen. If the body does not get enough folate, red blood cells will not be able to mature, resulting in anemia caused by folic acid deficiency, and low blood hemoglobin levels. Folic acid can be obtained from several food sources, the most important of which are: Beef. Spinach. the rice. Peanuts. Peas with black eyes. Avocado. Lettuce. Some cases require the intake of folic acid supplements according to the doctor's opinion. 3 - improve the absorption of iron in the body You should not be satisfied with iron-rich foods, but you should enhance the absorption of iron in the body through some foods that help in this, including: Foods rich in vitamin A: citrus, strawberries and leafy vegetables. Foods rich in vitamin A: such as fish, liver, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and turnips. Foods rich in beta-carotene: such as carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, melons, and mangoes. But it is not recommended to over-eat foods rich in vitamin A because it can be harmful to health, and may lead to the pain of bones and joints, severe headaches, and increased pressure inside the brain. 4. Avoid drinks that reduce iron absorption In contrast, it is recommended to reduce the intake of beverages that reduce the absorption of iron in the body, especially in the case of low hemoglobin blood. These include: tea and coffee, as well as soft drinks. 5. Eat apples regularly Apple helps maintain the normal level of hemoglobin in the blood, as it is rich in iron, in addition to other healthy nutrients. It is recommended to eat one apple a day or drink a natural juice of half an apple and a half of beet juice twice a day. 6. Eat pomegranate regularly Pomegranate is a rich source of calcium and iron, along with protein, carbohydrates and fiber. It is considered one of the best foods that raise the level of hemoglobin in blood, thanks to the nutritional value enjoyed. It is preferable to take pomegranate juice daily to ensure that the levels of normal hemoglobin in the blood are maintained. 7. Eat nettle tea Nettle is a good source of vitamin B, iron and vitamin C, and can play a major role in raising the level of hemoglobin in the blood. To make nettle tea, add two teaspoons of dried nettle leaves to a cup of hot water and leave for 10 minutes, then drain and add a tablespoon of white honey, and be taken twice a day during treatment. 8. Exercise When exercising, the body produces more hemoglobin to meet the increasing demand for oxygen throughout the body. It is therefore advisable to regularly exercise on a daily basis, as well as to eat healthy diet. source https://www.medicineonline.tk/2019/06/natural-ways-to-increase-hemoglobin-in.html

Calcite Powder
Calcium carbonate, or CaCO3, comprises more than 4% of the earth’s crust and is found throughout the world. Its most common natural forms are chalk, limestone, and marble, produced by the sedimentation of the shells of small fossilized snails, shellfish, and coral over millions of years. Although all three forms are identical in chemical terms, they differ in many other respects, including purity, whiteness, thickness and homogeneity. Calcium carbonate is one of the most useful and versatile materials known to man.
Also, our Micronized Calcite Powder is used as a Functional filler/additive in RPVCA pipes, Masterbatches, PP, HDPE, LDPE, ABS, Epoxy, PS and other polymer based compounds & as an extender in paints. We have firmly positioned ourselves as one of the significant Calcite Powder Supplier in India and Calcite Manufacturer in India. Calcium carbonate veins 30 to 150 cm. Thick, running uniformly sometimes for long distances, are usually found. Calcium also occurs as calcareous tufa, travertine, stalactite and stalagmite.
Dolomite Powder
Dolomite is believed to have formed by replacement of some of the calcium in a calcium carbonate limestone deposit with magnesium, while the sediment was undergoing lithification, being converted from layers of dead clam and other sea animal shells into crystallized calcite or calcium carbonate. The resultant dolomite mineral, CaMg(CO3)2 is a true double salt. The calcium and magnesium ions in dolomite exist in separate layers in the crystal matrix. Dolomite has a calcium layer, then a carbonate layer, then a magnesium layer then a carbonate layer, and so on.
It is used in a variety of applications and quite widely accepted across a cross section of industries serving various properties.
