New Frontier: ISRO’s Earth Observation Satellite Launch Date Decided ; On Independence Day

ISRO has said its latest Earth observation satellite EOS-08 will be launched onboard the third and final developmental flight of its Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV)-D3 on August 15.
The primary objectives of the EOS-08 mission include designing and developing a microsatellite, creating payload instruments compatible with the microsatellite bus, and incorporating new technologies required for future operational satellites, the Bengaluru-headquartered national space agency said.

“SSLV’s third and final (developmental) flight will launch EOS-08 microsatellite on August 15, 2024, at 09:17 IST from Sriharikota. It completes the SSLV Development Project and enables operational missions by Indian industry and NewSpace India Limited (NSIL),” ISRO posted on ‘X”.
Built on the Microsat/IMS-1 bus, EOS-08 carries three payloads: Electro Optical Infrared Payload (EOIR), Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry payload (GNSS-R), and SiC UV Dosimeter.
The spacecraft has a mission life of one year. It has a mass of approximately 175.5 kg and generates power of around 420 W. The satellite interfaces with the SSLV-D3/IBL-358 launch vehicle, ISRO said.
The EOIR payload is designed to capture images in the Mid-Wave IR (MIR) and Long-Wave IR (LWIR) bands, both during the day and night, for applications such as satellite-based surveillance, disaster monitoring, environmental monitoring, fire detection, volcanic activity observation, and industrial and power plant disaster monitoring.
The GNSS-R payload demonstrates the capability of using GNSS-R-based remote sensing for applications such as ocean surface wind analysis, soil moisture assessment, cryosphere studies over the Himalayan region, flood detection, and inland waterbody detection.
The SiC UV Dosimeter monitors UV irradiance at the viewport of the Crew Module in the Gaganyaan Mission and serves as a high-dose alarm sensor for gamma radiation.
According to ISRO, EOS-08 marks a significant advancement in satellite mainframe systems such as an Integrated Avionics system, known as the Communication, Baseband, Storage, and Positioning (CBSP) Package, which combines multiple functions into a single, efficient unit.
“This system is designed with cold redundant systems using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and evaluation boards, supporting up to 400 Gb of data storage. Additionally, the satellite includes a structural panel embedded with PCB, an embedded battery, a Micro-DGA (Dual Gimbal Antenna), an M-PAA (Phased Array Antenna), and a flexible solar panel, each serving as key components for onboard technology demonstration,” it said.

NEC Corporation India was selected by the Government of Silvassa for its Smart City Project
NEC Corporation India has announced that they have entered into an agreement with Silvassa Smart City Limited to implement a smart city Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) project. The project was launched in May 2022 and is scheduled to be done by May 2023. This collaboration between NEC India, a fully-owned subsidiary of the Japan-based NEC Corporation, and Silvassa Smart City Limited is set to transform and enhance the lives of the residents of Silvassa by promoting access to civic amenities, utilities, and public services and improving safety and security through efficient traffic management and control, and more.
To this end, the project will include an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), a unified platform for civic amenities that Silvassa residents will be able to access through a mobile application. Along with this, there will be a cloud-based Data Centre that will have data recovery capabilities.

Five smart parking systems will be built across the city to improve traffic mobility and daily commute. Over 20 Adaptive Traffic Control Systems (ACTS) will monitor traffic using cameras and sensors. The systems will synchronise traffic lights in real-time based on real-time traffic conditions optimising traffic flow and density. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) technologies will be integrated into the system to quickly detect traffic violations, ensure ease of traffic violation follow-up, and promote safe driving.
There will also be a powerful observation system with 400 cameras placed at strategic locations across the city for public safety, to observe general conditions, and to enable effective law enforcement. Moreover, two AI-supported environment sensors will monitor water, weather, irradiation, and soil moisture levels to optimise farming operations and prevent crop diseases. The sensors will also improve environmental disaster prediction and enhance the city’s disaster preparedness.

TÜV Rheinland Verifies Diffuse Booster, Soltec's Algorithm that Increases the Gain of a Photovoltaic Plant by 5.3% When it is Cloudy
For the second year, Soltec Power Holdings has published a technical report together with the German company TÜV Rheinland, which has verified that Soltec TeamTrack® with Diffuse Booster can increase the gain of a photovoltaic solar plant by up to 5.3% on regular terrain at Mediterranean latitudes.In this study, TÜV Rheinland verified the Soltec Diffuse Booster algorithm, which aims to increase the production of a photovoltaic solar plant even on cloudy days, when there is more diffuse irradiation than direct irradiation. The algorithm, which uses both sensors and weather forecasts, moves the trackers to the optimal position that captures the maximum irradiation.Thus, TÜV Rheinland has observed that activation of the Diffuse Booster algorithm increases the energy yield of Basic TeamTrack by 5.3% in Mediterranean and Equatorial sites, reaching a 6.9% gain at Northern latitudes. The Diffuse Booster algorithm thus optimizes the performance during fully cloudy days, with power generation increases of up to 12.4% for a single day.The expected gains for the Mediterranean, Equatorial and Northern regions compared to standard backtracking are 2.5%, 1.3% and 3.8%, respectively. Specifically, considering different climates and energy prices, the implementation of TeamTrack® in a 100 MWp PV plant can represent an increase in yearly revenues of about 1,8 Mn euros in Spain, where the energy price is 32€/MWh; and 668,000 euros in Brazil, with an energy price of 30€/MWh.  In Northern latitudes, such as Germany, where the energy price is 48,8€/MWh, these revenues can reach more than 2Mn euros.
