ive been rotating an au in my mind where show utena remembers being friends with touga (like in the movie) at the beginning of the series and like recognizes him and she's like. "Oh its touga my old friend touga who i drifted apart from after the near-drowning incident for reasons ive never been able to articulate to myself." Nothing really changes in terms of actual show events, Touga is still a dick and asserts himself romantically at her bc he doesn't think women and men can be friends anymore, but in terms of character dynamics its less of Utena being manipulated into thinking a guy she barely knows could be her prince and more her reassessing why she stopped thinking of Touga that way in her childhood, and struggling to reconnect with him through the bullshittery of the duels and Touga's own manipulative behavior.

#it would make the end of touga arc 5million times more heartbreaking also. to me personally #you ahve to understand the way i reconcile the movie events in my head with the fact that touga is still alive #is like. i think he nearly drowned but survived. but for utena it was like his death because it was the end of her seeing him as a prince #like his self-sacrificial act wasn't princely and beautiful it was scary and upsetting and pointless #and it broke an illusion for her that was already being worn down by touga's gradually changing behavior #(bc of background abuse she was not privy to)#it also was the end of something similar for touga too. kind of like the last time he tried to act princely in a genuine way #and i think shortly after that he met akio #it parallels dios ok????????????????? you get me #rgu #touga kiryuu #utena tenjou
