This owl video popped up for me and I’m assuming it’s not very cute? It feels kinda staged potentially, and it seems like there’s too much contact with the owl. Apologies if this has been sent before!

I’d need a bit more context to really say actually.
I’m not sure what circumstances would find a short-eared owl 20+ miles over open water, they’re normally prairie hunters so my best guess is that this one could have been napping on a docked boat and gotten stuck out there, just landing on the nearest possible surface to try to figure out where to go, or perhaps there was a very bad wind storm blowing the little thing off course during migration.
It’s a very weird scenario. I’d expect it from an Osprey or bald eagle perhaps, not a short-eared owl.
And because this species doesn’t generally fish and doesn’t really migrate across open water typically, I would say it’s fair to assume it needs help.
Obviously wrapping the body in a towel and leaving the head exposed is the opposite of what would keep the owl most calm, but I don’t really blame laymen for not intuitively knowing that, and on a boat you don’t usually have a spare box to put the little guy in or welding gloves to hold the owl more safely on the hand in the end.
With the limited information gleaned from the video alone, I don’t see any major problems with it. The owl seems to not be injured and it’s not like you can really ask the owl where it wants to be dropped off. In all likelihood just based on the behavior this bird was probably a bit worn out and in need of rest, which it will get much easier in a tree than over the open ocean as owls must actively flap their wings to fly long distance and can’t soar with the ease of a buzzard or vulture.
Very weird scenario and the white boys did the best help they knew how to give to get the owl where it needs to be. As long as we don’t go with the cynical assumption that ~nothing actually happens for real~ meaning they secretly stole the owl and took it out there to make a fake inspo video, I really don’t have any major issues with this since they didn’t keep the bird and the bird showed no obvious signs of injury.
The stress was at least temporary and the owl returned to the wild safely. They didn’t (on camera at least) excessively touch/pet/kiss/etc. the owl or really mess with it (that we know of). The owl probably would not have done well if left over that much open water, the fact they were able to catch it up at all means it must have been extremely exhausted and not really in the mood for fighting back. It’s acting a bit odd, but honestly long eared owls and short eared owls are just Like That. If it were almost any other owl species I would be worried about neurologic problems but they do just tend to sit there like 😐 the entire time they’re restrained so it’s not that out of character for the species imo.
So tentatively this is a “good job white boys” moment.

Girly wrote a whole book just to block me. Her argument was not convincing, I still saw the response and I hate to tell her this but many TIMs will openly admit that they "used" to be incels or general misogynist before they "realized" they had a super girly feeling inside of them. I just want to know why she wasted her time though.

Is The Owl Video Cute?
Rating: Cute
This owl is in the incredibly competent care of Ben Woodruff, one of my favorite falconers in the country. He is one of the precious few falconers I’ve known to fly owls as falconry birds successfully, which is what this one is being raised for.
This sweet baby will also go on outreach programs to teach the public about owls and their natural history.
Owlets at this age are incredibly inquisitive, as in the wild this intrigue is what draws them out of the nest to explore nearby branches. This youngster seems to have just discovered the wonders of the air conditioner. Who knows what this little one is thinking.
