Modern! AU character headcanons (part 1)

I’m trying to write a Kimvy modern! AU (it’s in my Ambivalence story, told in fragmented little bits, although I might write a few stand-alone things in that universe) and I’m having lots of fun coming up with what the FMA cast is up to in this world. I figured that I’d share what I’d come up so far, since most of this isn’t going to make it into the story proper. A lot of these HCs center around Kimblee and Envy, though, since they’re the focus of the main story, so hopefully you don’t mind that.

Maes Hughes: Chief of Police. The very picture of a family man. Kimblee and Hughes met briefly in college, during some shared electives. Hughes tried to be a friend to him, but Kimblee pushed him away as much as he could, only keeping him around for advice on those courses that they shared. These days, though, Kimblee finds himself asking Hughes for advice as he deals with relationship issues with Envy, rekindling the little bit of “friendship” that they had.

Gracia Hughes: Stay-at-home mom to Elysia Hughes. She writes fiction in her spare time, hoping to have the first book in her space opera trilogy published soon. She and Maes like to hit the roller rink on Friday nights.

Roy Mustang: Shared a foster home with Kimblee at a few points while Kimblee was shifted through the system (since there were few people willing to deal with his issues in the long-term). As a result, he thinks that he knows Kimblee very well, although he really only knows the weird twelve-year-old who still hadn’t outgrown licking people and putting shiny objects in his mouth and didn’t know how to talk about anything normal, not the Perfectly Normal, Well-adjusted Adult that Kimblee is today. Kimblee doesn’t think much of him, but Roy is probably the closest thing to a brother that he has. Works a cushy job at City Hall, but is hoping to climb the ranks and become the mayor someday.

Barry the Chopper: Security guard at Envy’s office. He shipped Envy and Kimblee long before they knew that they were a thing. He wasn’t too excited at first when he found out that Envy was his boss, but soon decided that they were “quite pretty, in their own sort of way,” and became quite fond of them. Always in a good mood, which always puts Envy in a bad one. He’s rarely seen without his machine gun (or, when he can sneak it past the other security guards, his machete) slung over his shoulder.

Olivier Armstrong and the Briggs Gang: Run “Northern Wall,” a fairly high-class coffee shop. One of the most efficient and high-quality businesses in the city, but everybody agrees that the prices are highway robbery. The staff are remarkably patient people, listening to the problems of their patrons (most of all, Envy, who comes in and complains at them nearly every day), but they won’t put up with any violence or misbehaviour-- Buccaneer will toss anyone who doesn’t follow the rules out the door.

Isaac McDougal: An assistant professor at the university when Kimblee was an undergrad, he helped the younger man as much as possible during school. When the economic downturn occurred, he was let go from the job. He refuses to apply for unemployment benefits, instead scraping together a living from various odd jobs to keep under the radar. He keeps all of his money in a vault because he doesn’t trust the bank system. He’s Kimblee’s self-proclaimed best friend, and the two of them will occasionally hang out in either of their apartments, debating various conspiracy theories. Isaac also likes to bring Kimblee casseroles whenever he thinks Kimblee is feeling ill or down (which somehow winds up being once a week, whether Kimblee wants it or not).

(You can tell that Isaac is one of my favourites; I’ve made up so many goofy things for him that I’m not even going to put here because he’s just too much fun).

Dr. Marcoh: An elderly medical doctor and scientist who is Kimblee’s colleague and Envy’s subordinate. He was roped into a “project” under Envy that caused him to have to quit his job that he loved at the hospital in order to devote himself to the project. That, and a number of other factors in his life (such as the nature of the project), have led him to be quite depressed. Kimblee and Envy like to tease him, but they’re both quite fond of him as well, so they try (and fail) to cheer him up quite often.

Sheska: Librarian (what else?) at the university library. As the funding for the library keeps getting cut, Sheska keeps hosting bake sales and other events to earn money for buying new books for the library. Kimblee’s quite fond of her, and always tries to find new interesting books to recommend to her-- but she’s usually read them already.

Greed and the Devil’s Nest Gang (plus Ling, Lan Fan, and Fu): Run a malt shop in a surprisingly nice part of town. Envy used to frequent the place until Greed took ownership of it. Greed hopes to take over the entire district, buying out one business after the other, and eventually take over the entire city, then the WORLD. It’s pretty slow going, though, at the rate that Ling gives away ice cream to starry-eyed customers who ask nicely.

Darius, Heinkel, Zampano and Jerso: Taxi drivers, all of them. And they would all say that they love their jobs-- except for one bad customer who always seems to show up whenever any of them are in their worst moods. The white-suited man is the worst backseat driver imaginable, and will always bring up uncomfortable or downright disturbing topics. It’s almost like he wants them to get distracted and crash. Sometimes, Heinkel in particular has to choke down some primal urge to bite the guy’s head off. They were all thankful when the man started carpooling with somebody to work and troubled them no longer.
