It all started with this, the Gravis Kingpin. Before I first ever went into @kickshawaii - before I signed up for @niketalk_com or @solecollector forums. Before I even heard the term #Sneakerhead or even learned there were #HawaiiSneakerheads - The Gravis Kingpin was the first shoe that I got that I really enjoyed wearing, to the point that I had to get another pair of the same model in the same color. I think this was either in 2000 or 2001 and I got it from @islandsnowhawaii in Ala Moana Center, and I just enjoyed walking around in such a comfy shoe. I liked the soccer stylings of this shoe, and although there were many colorways released, I specifically loved the gummy sole and the different shades of black produced just by using different materials on this one. Another thing going for it was the removable insole, which @gravisjapan (the only link I could find to the brand) would make exchangeable with artist designed insoles sold separately. It’s now 2021, and my last and only pair from 20 years ago still looks and feels pretty solid, although the vinyl lining is sticky and ready to peel off should I ever decide to rock this shoe. I don’t know if I could yet - I’m still hoping Gravis makes a comback in America and brings this shoe back decades later.
