#JackedKirby - The Face of Doom!!! 💥💥💥 In the early days of Marvel Jack, Stan and the rest of the Bullpen creatives were beholden to the Comics Code, a set of rules and guidelines that governed what could and couldn’t be placed (both in the art or story) in a comic book. This required some “finessing” from the creatives.... they had to find ways to both get their points across while at the same time staying within the guidelines! 💥💥💥 Jack towed that line masterfully, often times utilizing ingenious strategy to meet his requirements instead of altering what it was he wanted to draw. Case in point: The mask if Dr Doom! 💥💥💥 Doom had always been portrayed as wearing a iron mask and green hooded cloak, obscuring his facial features from the outside world... the reasoning being his face underneath was hideously scarred. Despite the fact that this trope is played up for a long time by Kirby, actual “proof” of his scarred face never appears on the pages of the FF. Instead the disfigurement is implied only... therefore being able to be part of the overall characters story without the graphic depiction that would certainly violate the Comic Code. 💥💥💥 In Fantastic Four #Issue85 (from April of 1969) we see Doom posing for an official portrait commissioned from a painter... and he is doing so with his MASK OFF! However Jack utilizes a hand mirror that Doom is viewing his visage in to block out his scarred face from the reader, once again alluding to it with not ACTUALLY showing it.... genius as usual! The code is not violated and Jack still gets to utilize his hideously scarred villain. #JackedKirby - Los Cuatros FantasticoS!!! 4️⃣4️⃣4️⃣4️⃣ Came across this excellent Mexican edition of Fantastic Four #Issue87 and was struck by the fact that they used almost ALL of the original cover art.... but went with a completely different Logo/Title in terms of font and style! 💥💥💥 The original issue that was published with this cover was #Issue87 from June of 1969. This is numbered as Mexican Edition #Issue85 and came out in November of 1981.... That means it took 12 years to get printed down in Mexico Way!!!! 💥💥💥 The “World’s Greatest Comics Magazine” got its Mexican print run courtesy of Novedades Editores, a Mexican Print company starting in 1979/80. Somewhere in the print run they must have skipped a couple of issues, cause the issue numbers are almost identical... they must have left something out!!! #JackedKirby - The Bi-Frost.... 🌈🌈🌈 The Bi-Frost Bridge, it Rainbow Bridge as is sometimes called, is the bridge that connects Asgard with any location in the 9 Realms they may want to travel. This includes Midgard, or as we call it Earth! It is guarded by Heimdall, an all seeing Asgardian that uses his perceptive vision to see any and all threats coming from his observatory base. It first appeared in Journey Into Mystery #Issue85 and travel over it can only come with the permission of Heimdall himself! 🌈🌈🌈 The powerful magic bridge (or wormhole) is used by Thor and other Asgardians to instantly teleport from one spot in Asgard to another in a different realm. This instant teleportation would be later explored by Jack again in his 4th World Saga with the “Boom Tubes” The New Gods and minions of Darkseid use! Jack drew inspiration for it from actual Norse mythology, and it makes for quite an interesting visual subject! 🌈🌈🌈 #Issue127 (April of 1966) of The Mighty Thor features the bridge in two separate sections, both drawn by Kirby. In the main story (Pic 1) we see Thor returning from Midgard to speak with Odin... but as he travels across the bridge he encounters Heimdall and the other Warriors of Asgard being restrained by some sort of powerful magic. Could this be the beginning of RAGNAROK, the end of times in which the Bi-Frost will be destroyed? Jack draws the bridge elegantly and the colors really make the panels pop! 🌈🌈🌈 In Pic 2 we get a flashback story in the “Tales of Asgard” section of the book that show a young Thor and Loki during their formative years. This story is about the first time Odin teaches them of the threat of Raganarok, and also features a great page of Bi-Frost goodness from Jack as Odin tells the “what would happen if Ragnarok began” story to his two sons, stressing the important role the young gods must play in preventing this extinction level event! I love the use of the bridge to illustrate the invading evil forces, and Jack even shows it crumbling as a consequence of Ragnarok beginning!
