I think we need to add to the whole 'why can no one operate a computer anymore/again' that aside from people not being taught and programs becoming increasingly babylocked, programs also just. Don't tell you what they do, don't give you feedback on your input and frequently just don't react without indicating that they are not reacting to your input?
What I mean is. I remember getting started on computers, and there were buttons in video games that didn't do what they were supposed to. I assume this also sometimes happened in other programs but I was a baby and didn't use those. But this was considered a bug and a massive indicator of awful design and/or quality of the program. The expected, normal operation of a program used to be to find the button that does what you want, click on it, hear the little clicky noise indicating the computer knows you clicked the button and then either something happens or (more likely) there's a pop-up informing you Something Is Happening We Promise Between 1 Minute and 67 Years remaining. If it didn't work it made a little '!' sound or gave you a pop-up.
My current computer, aside from straight up not displaying the buttons for some functions I KNOW ARE THERE (being a migraine patient who needs to adjust all her screens is fun in this brave new world), constantly gives me '!'-sounds over every single thing THAT'S WORKING (why is there a '!PROBLEM!'-sound file attached to NORMALLY ADJUSTING THE SOUND WITH THE SOUND BUTTONS. A FILE WHICH OVERRIDES MY SOUND ADJUSTMENT AND SCREAMS IN MY EAR. WHY.) and also frequently just does not do the thing I told it to do with no indication that it is experiencing a problem or has aborted the order I gave it. I notice this most frequently with both the email programs I use (work and private, different programs) that will just. Not display emails. There is an email. I click on the email. There is no visual or auditory indicator if the program knows I clicked on the email. The email doesn't open. I click on the email. The email doesn't open. I reload the program. I click on the email. the email doesn't open. I click on the email. Finally, the email opens. I work with the email. I click on the next email. The next email does not open.
I could say something about mice and heroin pellets here but honestly I'm too pissed off.
Like. Man. What's happening here. Used to be if Grandpa called and said 'None of my emails are opening the internet is kaput :(' it was because he's 80 and clicked on the browser instead of the E-Mail client. Now it's frequently because his fucking emails are indeed just not opening for no goddamn reason except everyone abandoning the concept of 'functional program' somewhere around the time I graduated school.
#another example I see this in A LOT is the difference between the two bibsystems we use#one which is old and ugly and command-operated and does what you tell it to do exactly and has clicky buttons and clear pop-ups#the other one is the oclc lbs which i hope dies in a fucking fire soon like JESUS CHRIST i know it's not as bad as some others but DAMN#it for example frequently forgets to open the password pop-up on password-protected things to prompt you for the password and instead just#fucking aborts what you were doing???#barely usable program istg#and sorry but FOLIO looks like it will be hot trash. stop making the design sleek and colourful and start building usable programs again#highly specific bib-beef here in the tags i know but what can you do
