#it just feels like a very evolved take to look at viserys and be like hey this guy maybe he won’t marry a 12 year old and he won’t cheat on

i just gotta say i really love how they are portraying the very specific type of man that viserys is. which is like, nice enough? and to be clear, i’m not saying he’s nice but that on the surface, he appears to be a very kind and caring man and father but maybe not a great king. but he also does not do anything to buck against the norms of westeros and will do what is most convenient for him because he is afraid and ultimately spineless.
like he loved his wife and cares deeply about her, but also he pressured her through multiple pregnancies and no he did not include her in the choice re:the birth and let her die terrified because he was too spineless to tell her the truth of the situation or include her in the decision he made
and he loved his daughter but not enough to claim her as heir until his brother pissed him off and then to try and do damage control and say he should’ve always seen it and yet after naming her heir he continues to exclude her and belittle her before his council while still eventually cashing in on the fact that he did name her heir (even if he’s not doing any work or putting in any effort to prepare her)
and he’s disturbed at the thought of marrying a 12 year old but also is comfortable regularly meeting with and grooming his 15 year old daughter’s best friend and is unnerved that Laena is being tutored on how to speak to him and persuade him but is willfully ignorant to the possibility that otto holds a similar sway over alicent and also is willfully ignorant to the fact that rhaenyra agreed to the marriage but would genuinely have never felt comfortable with him marrying her best friend
viserys just has this vibe of like “hey he could be worse” and sometimes a vibe that he thinks he’s pretty alright because of that and it can just be very sinister. he’s so spineless.
i don’t know what i’m saying i just feel like it’s a flavor of character thrones hasn’t quite touched on before. and i’m enjoying their take on it and paddy considine is great.

Chapter Thirty Three- Blood on Her Hands
—-
Three Weeks Before Viserys’ Death
“Sometimes,” your husband whispers, soft, into your hair. “I wish that I could be better for you.”
You almost laugh. “I like you the way you are.”
“Yes, but-”
“None of that,” you scold, and smile as you pull back, straddling him, hands flat on the smooth panes of his chest to steady yourself.
His hands trail up and down your arms, tilting his chin down as he moves one hand to play with the edge of your nightgown, now ridden up by your hips. It’s lace, gold, and he stares at it appreciatively.
“But…” he continues, ignoring you.” I do not deserve your or Rhaenyra’s love.”
“Why?” You frown, hands smoothing up and down his chest, and you feel his hips buck below you. You ignore it, hellbent on getting an answer out of him, now.
“I am not a good man. I would send the entirety of Westeros into a doom, for the two of you. For our family, for our blood.”
“Romantic,” you muse, and he smiles.
“Very.”
His hands move to hold your hips, go to move you, but you remain where you are, despite his best efforts.
“What? You won’t let your husband fuck you?”
“You are the one who brought up this foolish self loathing.”
He sighs, rolls his eyes, clearly eager to move past this conversation.
“All I am saying is that we need you. Rhaenyra and I are too similar, you know that. We burn too hot. We need you, so we will not doom this entire continent.”
“Aw,” you coo, genuinely touched by his words. He rolls his eyes as you lean down to kiss him, chaste, and he chases you for more. You straighten your spine. You admit, it is nice to see him chase you. “I love you, Daemon.”
“I love you too, sweetling, more than anything. Can I please fuck you now?”
But the door opens before you can respond, and Rhaenyra jokingly clicks her tongue at your compromising position.
“Starting without me?” She smiles, and you beckon her over with a syrupy sweet smirk and a hooked finger.
She answers your call, crawling onto the bed to kiss you. Chaste, just a peck, before she lays down, propped on her side, a lazy elbow under her.
“Oh, don’t let me stop you.” She smiles, like a cat, teasing, and you throw your head back to laugh when Daemon nods eagerly.
They need you. You smile as Daemon pulls you down to kiss him.
—-
Present
When the novelty wears off, and your tears stop, you pull back to look at Jace. You place your hands on his face, tears long since ebbed, and he smiles wobbly.
“Are you real?” he asks, and it’s almost as if he’s a boy of two and ten, young and curious.
“Yes,” you smile, laugh, until it drops. “Rhaenyra and Daemon sent you?” You frown, and he steps away from you, back.
“Perhaps they did not.” You have half a mind to scold him, but you know what him being here means. If he got in, he can get out. And take you with him.
You remember their faces, their names, and your resolve grows.
“We- we have to go, quickly.”
He nods, and you brush past him to make for the door. He hesitates behind you.
“I… I was going to kill them. I was.” He admits, suddenly, as if seeing you had made the vengeance fade and guilt take its place.
You smile, softly. “I have done worse.” The lives of Blood and Cheese are on your hands, you know. You doubt they will ever be clean again. You constantly yearn to wash them, scrub them raw, but you do not trust the water of the Red Keep. This place has poison seeping through the walls.
You vow, now, the promise actually attainable, that you will wash the blood from your hands.
He stares at you for a moment, like you are a whole new person. He plants his feet and walks toward you, giving you a dagger.
—-
“We’ll go through the tunnels. But-” His mother nods, as Jace brandishes his own dagger, safety now on the forefront of his mind. He no longer has to avenge his mother. He has to protect her.
She presses a kiss to his temple just as he opens the door, revealing an empty hallway. He grabs her hand, warm, comforting in his grasp, guiding, grounding.
He leads her the way he came, down the hallway, through the secret door in the wall, down a never ending staircase. Sunrise is not for many hours and darkness will cover them, but still, he can tell his mother is eager to get home. He isn’t, so much. Not eager for whatever chores his parents will dole out on him as punishment.
Selfishly, he hopes Rhaenyra and Daemon will be too entranced in Y/N. Treat him like a hero for bringing her back. They’ll trust him with more. He will prove himself if he brings her home. He will bring her home.
Not only because he needs to approval, but because he missed her. Rhaenyra and Daemon missed her. The younger babies cry more, Luke and Joffrey miss her. He knows that tensions between his parents and Rhaenys and Corlys were tense. A part of the formers could never forgive the people they believed had parts in their children’s death. In their eyes, Y/N was absolved of those crimes. She did not even know them, not then, so it was easier for them to produce a kind word for her.
Besides, Baela and Rhaena enjoy Y/N. She is not their mother, but she is a kind word and a warm hand, understanding and sweet. She is not a replacement, but more so a salve.
The staircase ends, and the corridors are now wide enough to walk side by side. She whispers, asks about the family, and he does not lie to her. He tells her how the Blacks are lost, how Cannibal has reverted to his old ways, how Daemon and Rhaenyra are despondent. How the rest of the children miss her, need her, like he does.
He thinks he sees the sheen of tears in her eyes, but she only grabs his hand and squeezes, says she is so excited to be home. He asks her about Helaena, about Blood & Cheese, and she tells him, slowly, letting tears fall that make his heart twists.
As they near the edge of the passage, it only makes his anger grow. How dare his uncles do this to his mother?
But he pushes it aside as they reach the door. He takes a deep breath, and opens it quickly. She waits behind him, door still concealed in the shadows. They are the gardens, close to the courtyard. There is a side door that is rarely patrolled- they will get through that way. Sneak through the city, to the gates, make it to the woods as morning rises. Fly away on Vermax, quickly, so as his uncles cannot follow them.
His boots sink into the soft dirt as he steps out into the light of the moon, glancing back and forth. Empty. He lets out a breath he did not know he was holding.
Faintly, he hears his heart beating. He realizes it started beating again as soon as she said his name.
He turns, a shameless smile on his face. He can barely make out her figure in the shadows, but she is still there. He raises his hand to beckon her out as a hand closes upon his shoulder.
—-
You swear the man came out of nowhere. One second Jace was looking at you with the brightest smile on his face, the next his face was filled with fear. You clutched the dagger in your hands.
For your children, you would take a million lives.
(A part of you understands Daemon, now.)
You watch as the man, a non-descript guard, spins him around.
“You shouldn’t be here, boy.” He hisses, and you almost want to move out of the shadows, when Jace stutters out some fake apology and explanation.
The man studies him closely. Brown hair, brown eyes, faint Valyrian features, fine red and black clothes.
“You’re- you’re one of the princes.” The man breathes, and Jace’s face hardens, and just by the pure resolve in his face, you almost do not come forward. It seems as if he’s got it.
Until the guard rips the dagger out of Jace’s hands, after stomping on his foot, grabbing him by the bicep and hissing in his ear.
“I know many who would like to have their fun with a prince,” he says, just loud enough so you can hear.
You see the fear on Jace’s face. He glances at you, fleeting, not wanting to draw attention to you. But you see the pure terror in them.
And suddenly, it is as if you are possessed.
You storm out of the shadows, hidden door slamming beside you, raising your knife to the man and slashing.
He drops Jace, who lands on the ground unceremoniously, while the guard shouts in pain.
“You fucking bitch!” He shouts, making a move for his sword, hissing something else, but it is Jace’s voice you hear.
A desperate shout, a plea, an underlying beg.
“Kill him!”

Let's play devils advocate for one moment. Say J0n3rys does happen... how can it work? D*ny wants nothing short of the Iron Throne, Jon has never wanted to rule. Being cousins might be an issue for anti-Jonsas, but aunt and nephew sounds worse?. D*ny has no problems with taking anything she wants with "fire and blood" but Jon is sick and tired of fighting violent wars. And in GoT's patriarchal society, if D*ny becomes Queen and Jon King, the King will always come first - will D*ny accept that?
Hi, Anon, sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this one… I wanted to take my time to come up with a decent answer for you, but I was often tempted to just say: No, you’re right, it would never work, not in a thousand years.
And I’ll try to go along with your wish to play the devil’s advocate.
I’m going to put this under a cut, because it’s quite long.
First of all, I’d like to point out that incompatability is strictly speaking not enough reason for J0nerys not to happen. There is such a thing as attraction, which simply doesn’t follow any logical rules. Jon and Ygritte for example were also incompatible, at least in a couple of ways. Just think of real-life situations, people who can’t/shouldn’t be together, but still want to for a myriad of reasons.
But of course, this isn’t real life, this is a story and to talk about a possible relationship between two characters, we can’t only look at them as people, but also at their roles in the story.
If we break any story down to the bare components we have a protagonist, who wants to achieve a goal. On the other hand, we have an antagonist whose goal clashes with that of our protagonist and that creates conflict. As you pointed out, Jon and D@ny definitely have these conflicting goals and motivations.
The problem with a story like Game of Thrones/ASOIAF is that it’s just not as clear who is the protagonist and who is the antagonist. It all depends on POV. In this case, we’re familiar with both POVs. Jon is the hero in his own story, but so is D@ny. And the thing is, in their cases we can take this quite literally. They both want to be heroes. You should take this as a very general description, open to many different interpretations.
I think this is what convinces a lot of their shippers they would work together romantically. They both have the best of intentions, but - I think you could feel this coming- the road to hell is paved with good intentions. And that’s especially applicable to D@ny’s narrative. It’s a bit naive to think that good intentions are enough to forgive a character’s mistakes if you ask me, that’s something that’s true for both Jon and D@ny.
To be honest, I could see Jon and pre-Astapor D@ny working, even perhaps Jon and pre-Meereen D@ny… But after Meereen and the fighting pit incident and its aftermath, I can’t, not anymore. At this point, their intentions have changed. The one thing that truly drives them has shifted and their motivations are no longer aligned.
D@ny has embraced her Targaryen legacy and is willing to do anything to take what is hers with fire and blood. I’m not saying she’s going to come in and burn everything to the ground from the moment she arrives in Westeros, but I am anxious to see how she’s going to deal with opposition.
As much as people like to emphasize how righteous and noble her mission to free all the slaves in Slavers’ Bay is - and I’m not even denying that- and while it was crucial for her character development and story arc, it has never been her true mission. Ever since Viserys died, that has always been to conquer the Seven Kingdoms.
She’s always struggled with violence and people suffering and with how she’s supposed to reconcile that with her ambitions as a conqueror, but at this point she’s accepted this as an inevitable part of war.
Jon on the other hand once again finds himself in a position of power he never asked for. I know that on some level it’s everything he’s ever wanted. I feel a lot of people misunderstand Jon when they say he doesn’t want power and that he doesn’t have any ambitions. He does, he’s always wanted that recognition, he’s always known it would never be his, but now that he’s got it, it must fill him with equal measures of guilt and satisfaction.
But Jon is a man on a mission, and he’s going to use the power he’s been given to achieve his goals. He’s still going to do what he thinks is the right thing. Saving the world from the White Walkers is his responsibility, not because he’s Lord Commander or King in the North, but because he’s made the choice to take that mission upon his shoulders. Apart from that the most important thing in Jon’s life is his family.
I think the contrasts here are noteworthy. D@ny wants to rule the Seven Kingdoms, Jon wants to save them. D@ny has chosen the legacy of a family she’s never even known, while Jon has chosen his own family. In the books he chose to break his vows for Arya, on the show he decided to fight for Winterfell, against his desires to abandon everything and go South, because of Sansa and Rickon.
So they are going to clash. This doesn’t mean that J0nerys is not going to happen. I’m actually quite convinced they will in some shape or form, but they’re never going to last.
If Jon bends the knee to D@ny, without consulting Sansa and his bannermen, that’s going to have consequences. I know he might think it’s the right thing if it’s the only way to convince D@ny to help him against the White Walkers, but it’s not going to end well. And he should know that.
If Jon marries D@ny, this is going to cause problems for Jon. His bannermen will not accept a foreign queen, especially not one who wants to be more than a consort. Jon should know that.
Neither of these events are necessarily romantic. And on top of that, I don’t think either of them has their minds on romance at the moment. Emilia Clarke even commented that D@ny has set her desire for a man aside, because she wants to focus on the Iron Throne. But let’s say that despite the circumstances something does occur between the two of them.
Most likely this will, at least initially, only be them looking for comfort in a moment of weakness, and there could be some form of mutual physical attraction as well. This does in no way imply that feelings are involved. People like to say that Jon wouldn’t have sex with someone he’s not in love with, but I don’t know what they’re basing this observaton off. I don’t believe Jon was truly in love with Ygritte the first time they had sex.
But let’s assume that this evolves into more than sex. The circumstances just aren’t right for them. Even then, they could make it work for a while, despite their differences and despite their conflicting goals. It’s inevitable however that at one point R+L=J will be revealed. This is going to cause tension and conflict between them.
Jon will be appalled by the fact that D@ny is his aunt, she will feel threatened by his claim to the Iron Throne. Jon is going to struggle so badly with this revelation and I can see him turning away from D@ny at this point, trying to reconnect to his real family he might feel he has lost at that point. And while D@ny might be willing to put her fears aside because in Jon she can finally gain a family member, his response to the news isn’t going to go over well with her.
Let’s say they are able to overcome even this. The North will not be as willing to follow Jon once they find out about R+L=J. If they’re already in the middle of a war against the White Walkers, they might turn a blind eye for now, in order to survive, but in the long term, it’s not going to work out.
I think it’s very likely that D@ny will die in the War for the Dawn, be it Nissa Nissa style, sacrificing herself or giving birth to a magical Targcest baby. I don’t even want to rule out the possibility that D@ny does go full mad queen at some point or that she at least does something Jon won’t be able to forgive her. I can see Jon being forced to kill her. He’s always felt guilty about Ygritte dying, as if he was truly responsible for her death, so it could be possible we’ll see a repetition of this, but with Jon truly killing his lover.
I know there’s a chance Jon will not survive the War for the Dawn either, but please let me live in denial for as long as I can and let’s assume for a while that both of them survive.
The North will still be a problem. After the White Walkers have been defeated or however which other way the conflict will be resolved, I can see Jon more than willing to abdicate in favour of Sansa, Arya or Bran, but I don’t think D@ny is going to give it up so easily.
This will create yet another conflict between her and Jon, and if it comes to it, Jon will choose the Starks over D@ny. But let’s say that they find a solution. D@ny will still want an alliance with the North, most likely through marriage. She might ask Sansa and Tyrion to renew their marriage, but I don’t think the North would accept that.
The other option of course is for Jon to marry either Arya or Sansa. Jon and D@ny might be willing to set their personal desires aside for the good of the realm. I don’t like this option for any of the people involved.
But let’s take this yet another step further and assume that they find some other way to solve this problem and Jon and D@ny can be together. Where will they end up? D@ny is not going to agree to come and live in Winterfell, so it would be King’s Landing for them.
This would never work out. Jon would be miserable in the capital, away from the North and his family, trapped in that viper’s nest. He and D@ny would clash constantly, both over political matters and personal ones.
As you’ve pointed out, Westeros is a patriarchal society and even if Jon wasn’t a Targ, most lords would consider him the true ruler, not D@ny. She’s not going to be able to accept that. D@ny wants to be a Queen Regnant, not a Queen Consort. And while Jon would probably accept the title of Prince Consort instead of being King, the lords of Westeros would probably still treat him as the King.
Perhaps if they had children together, this could save them. But chances are that D@ny really is barren, or that she’s unable to deliver a healthy child. This would not only put more strain on their relationship, it would also be a political disaster.
I could see either of them ending up looking for comfort elsewhere. You might say this is OOC for Jon, but people simply do things which are uncharacteristic for them when they’re extremely unhappy. And in that case I could see Jon turning to Arya or Sansa or another Northern woman.
So, in the end I’m going to give you the same answer, Anon. No, it would never work out. And I want more than that for Jon. I want him to get his happy ending, his dream of being a lord, marrying a lady and having a family of his own. And in my opinion there’s only one other character whose dreams are completely aligned with his and that’s Sansa.
