I think it's interesting how I don't really. Think about my walker til I use it. Like, I hear a lot of people who use their mobility aids constantly talking about how it's part of them, and ig I don't think about it, I don't feel that connection. Then I'm having to use it and it's definitely 100% part of me, and I'm not thinking about it in the way you don't think about your arm ig

Review for “A Blade So Black” by L.L. McKinney
Hello, Tumblrians! I thought I’d end up publishing my reviews in order of the date I finished them, but that’d mean I have several months of reviews to catch up on and…that’s as exhausting as it sounds.
So here, a book I just finished! While on that dreaded trip I was telling you guys about, too. No BDB, I just really like to add to my StoryGraph TBR with books that make it onto queer reading list posts, and the sequel (“A Dream So Dark”) was one I kept finding.
And I like retellings too, so there’s that.
A Blade So Black follows seventeen year-old Alice Kingston, meant to be a monster-fighting Buffy-esque interpretation of the titular character from the Alice In Wonderland story(as this is a retelling). Besides keeping gnarly creatures in the dream realm known as Wonderland at bay, she has to juggle her problems in real-life Atlanta—think a slipping GPA, best friends and coping with the ever-present grief following one year since the death of her father. But when a nasty encounter means that her mentor (and possible love interest) Addison Hatta gets poisoned, she has to go find the antidote deeper within Wonderland than she’s ever gone, before she can literally lose her head.
Tumblr media
As you can see, it has an interesting premise! I like the darker reimagining of this story—although I know that’s been done before, famously with the American McGee’s Alice video game series(rest in peace, Asylum). Alice In Wonderland is a favorite of mine too, as a kid with a wild and vivid imagination (and a tendency to daydream) I loved the weird and nonsensical nature of it. And I haven’t watched Buffy before, but I liked the promise of it emanating a similar vibe! However, the execution of this was…so-so.
Firstly, because we didn’t spend as much time in Wonderland as I’d hoped (Allison got exiled, so there’s only so far you can go really), the worldbuilding was mainly through exposition and not in a more organic way. That got pretty tedious, such as in the case of an entire chapter showing Maddi explaining mirror images of the three queens of Wonderland. Combined with it taking a while for the plot to kick off (Allison didn’t get poisoned until halfway through), the actual structure of the plot didn’t feel solid. I have heard in that regard though, the second book is stronger, and I hope it delivers! A Blade So Black is L.L. McKinney’s debut novel, hence some of the hiccups in storytelling and pacing (and she likely has a better understanding of the story’s structure in the second book because now she has some experience to go off of).
Most of the aforementioned plot revolves around a MacGuffin, too. I’ve never been a fan of those, although I don’t think anyone is considering the term’s existence, and it basically made up the plot for when the Black Knight didn’t have nearly enough on-page time. (Not that I’m really complaining though, I had a visceral reaction to the “pet names” he’d use on Alice! Creep. Miss me with that “kitten” shit, I thought Discord didn’t exist here.) (the creepiness was intentional though, he was never paired with Alice thank god)
Secondly, I didn’t like the romance! Alice juggles a lot of crushes, as teens who get crushes do, and that’s perfectly normal and okay, but it results in this weird pseudo-love triangle existing? Like, she almost kisses Chess, but then spends the entire book thinking about Hatta. At least pick somebody, damnit! (And she had a crush on Xelon, the knight from the white queen’s kingdom, which I thought would culminate to something but nope. Xelon got paired with the princess. Which wasn’t totally surprising, I’ll admit, but I just wish they had more time together. They were kinda cute.) But also, Hatta and Alice have a mentor-student dynamic (which seemed to be weirder to a Goodreads reviewer who was also a Buffy fan and made some connections with the characters in the show?). While they’re the same age appearance-wise, Wonderlandians are semi-immortal, and I don’t know how the aging process works at all for them so it…makes this a little weird? It can’t be just me thinking that.
Anyhow! So what are some things I did like about it, though? Well. I did like Alice’s balance of badassry and vulnerability. She definitely struggled with the latter, but she had some solid moments of dealing with her own grief surrounding her father’s death, and throughout it showed her struggling with the pressure and stress of her circumstances. Not many black female protagonists get to have that in a novel, or in any media, really! I appreciated that detail.
I wish the side characters could’ve been more developed. Being that the plot only kicked off halfway through, a third in was when most of them were introduced, so the time we had with them was limited towards the end. I really wanted to enjoy the Wonderland group’s antics and adventures, even if the cast fell under certain archetypes. But alas :(
The real-life and Wonderland stuff felt a little unbalanced in their time, too. There were important social justice issues brought up in the real-life parts(racism, police brutality), although they were only touched on and the story never went in-depth about them. Wonderland also felt pretty empty a lot of the time, mostly due to it literally being just that because of Hatta’s confines to travel within, but another part the worldbuilding.
It wasn’t a bad read, but I was still left with mixed feelings on it.
Book rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars. Finished 06/06/23.
(Book content/trigger warnings: Violence+blood, grief, death of a parent(off-page), racism and police brutality(mentioned), child death(mentioned), mild body horror.)
-Paz, signing off!

Blood Moon Rises, Part 2. First Meetings
Cole: You ok going out in my shirt and pajama bottoms? Because if you are... *scooping you up in my arms* I think we'll start with the pups. Preschool should be at recess about now.
Scarlett: A soft smile lifted my lips.
Before I could think too hard I was swooped into the safety of his arms. I was comfortable being close to him now- and seeing the slightly older than infant pups was okay. Babies terrified me, sturdy toddlers were okay. I think.
“Do you think they’ll like me? Should we get cookies from the kitchen?” Thinking bribery might help my case with the young ones.
“We can toss him to the literal wolves that come for him.” Talking of my father. “He did nothing but hurt me and lie to me. I can’t feel bad for his misdeeds.” I needed to move on from trying to protect him from his repercussions.
Cole: *Laughing,* You won't need to bribe them. We're just going to sit on the playground with them for a while. They'll come to us. And stop worrying about your father's misdeeds. I won't hide anything from you, but you can trust me to handle it.
*Walking out the door into the hallway, I try to see my house from her view. After we rescued her, I could have had her housed in the infirmary, and it was a first class facility, but she belonged in my home and I wasn't having her anywhere else. It was always going to be hers too
The second floor didn't have a hallway. The 6 bedroom suites opened to a balcony overlooking a great room. Timber beams lined the ceiling and a stone fire place took up an entire wall. The kitchen was out of sight from here, but it was the epitome of modern convenience. Though I usually ate with the pack in the mess hall all private residences had their own kitchens. I recognized the need for family time as Carrying her down the stairs, I had to wonder if she liked it.*
This your home now, even if we aren't sharing a bedroom yet. If there are any changes you want to make to it, just say the word. I want it to be the home you want.
Scarlett: My jaw dropped in awe of the beauty of the house that was now my home. The intricacies of nature brought inside was honestly stunning.
“I can’t think of anything more perfect of our home.”
I wanted to have family meals, I wanted to meet and greet the pack. I wanted all of it. I wanted everything Cole offered me. I toyed with the ring to stop myself from being nervous. When we reached the outdoor area my ears picked up the sounds of jubilant children. I buried closer to Cole. It was encouraging to have him near and promoting my relationship with the pack.
“Would you like to share rooms?“ I wasn’t sure if I was ready, but did he actually want that or did he want to keep his own space? The kids see Cole come into view and happy chorus sound and I laugh as they call out “Alpha Cole!”
Cole: *Grinning as I hear the kids call out my name...I love pups. They're so open and honest about what they feel...*
When we are officially mated I'm going to insist we share a room. I don't want my mate sleeping anywhere but beside me. Until then, I'll wait for you to come to me. When you're ready to spend a night in my bed, I hope you'll be ready to spend a lifetime in it and if that comes before the official ceremony you won't hear me complain.
*Setting her down in one of the Adirondack chairs that line the playground, I kneel in front if it as I'm attacked by four-year-olds.*
Scarlett: I wonder as we reach our destination when I will be ready. My body feels ready but part of that could be the mating bond. I wanted to give myself to him entirely but I wasn’t able to yet. I would though. I knew I would. The chair was cooler and comfortable as I just observe Cole with the little pups. I hear play growling, and them begging to see his wolf. One of the little boys approaches me and asks my name.
“I’m Scarlett.” I smile at him, he takes my hand. “I get Scarlett as my mate.” He howls out. Shocked I can’t help the laughter that falls from my lips. “Oh honey. I think Alpha Cole might object. You see I’m his mate.” I look at Cole to see if it’s okay.
Cole:*Grinning at her in approval, I add,* That's right Noah, Scarlett is my mate. She's going to be your female alpha soon. But I'm sure she's devastated she can't be both your mate and mine. *Noah's lower lip begins to jut out as he asks... 'what's 'dhevastate' mean?'
I smile and answer* It means very, very sad. *He brightens at that and asks 'Can she still pway with me?' and laughingly I answer* I'm sure she will. *I haven't missed the looks and whispers among the three teachers across the playground and I call out*
Hey, why don't you ladies come over. I have someone for you to meet.
Scarlett: I get up to start playing with Noah, he’s melting my heart even further. I’m falling for pack life. I could see it suiting me, and playing with the pups often. Maybe my own one day... That thought terrifies me to the core. Babies. Ripping my vagina. Ouch. No. Not now.
Lost in thought when three teachers approach you, I turn and see them ogling you, but Noah is leading me around as if I have a leash on. He’s showing me the entire playground and it looks fun. I hadn’t really ever played or been allowed... “Noah can you introduce me?” He nodded and led us back. “Teacher, teacher this is my mate but Alpha cwaimed her first.” The teachers look shocked and I’m silent for a moment letting Cole take the lead.
Cole:*Coming up behind Scarlett and Noah, I smile and slip my arm around Scarlett's waist*
Scarlett, these are our pre-school teachers, Tammy Barnes,* indicating an attractive 30'ish brunette,* Melinda Jensen, a 20-something willow blonde* and Abby Carson *a spirited grey-haired elder* They keep these pups on their toes. Miss Abby, Miss Tammy, and Miss Melinda, *using the titles because with pups around it's best to address their teachers the way we expect them to*, I'd like you to meet my mate, Scarlett Mitchell. She'll be officially entered into the pack census at tomorrow's council meeting, but I'm glad you're the first outside of Dr. Adams to meet her.
Scarlett: I smile at the women and stay close to Cole, the older one stepped forward and shook my hand as I offered it, she asked “so does this mean I can expect your pups soon Alphas?” I choke on my spit for a moment and nervously laugh looking up at Cole for the answer.
“I uhm, I haven’t hit my heat yet and we are enjoying being together after so long apart. We are taking time.”
I hoped that was satisfactory. Noah runs off to find more pups to play with since the adults were being boring by talking... according to him. I lace my fingers with Col, my mind now wondering how many times I’ll answer that one, and if anyone had snuck pregnancy tests into my room yet, or Cole’s, assuming we are sharing our bed. I hide my face for just a moment hoping the blush will die down quickly. “I am honored to meet you all.”
Cole: *Chuckling at Abby's bluntness, I squeeze Scar's hand.*
Miss Abby was my father's preschool teacher, my preschool teacher, and her stated goal is to be my children's teacher. Have patience Miss Abby. It'll happen. *gesturing to the brunette* Miss Tammy's husband Ethan is my Chief of Security. You'll meet him when we get you set up with a cell and your gate pass. Miss Melinda is another recent addition to the pack. She was entered into the census a few months ago. Her fiancé is a project manager for one of the packs major telecom clients. Ladies, Scarlett is still recovering from some injuries but I hope you'll help her find her way her as her recovery permits.
Scarlett: Relaxing as I learn more about the females, their auras are warm and they seem to genuinely care about the pups as they keep breaking off to check on the little ones. “I would be happy to volunteer to help with the pups, maybe it’ll help me?” I looked at them hopeful. Then, deciding to clarify, “I just... I’m not comfortable around tiny infants. They kind of scare me.”
They laugh a bit and I look up at Cole. I smiled at him. It was making me happy to meet others. I wanted to continue, but the pups were trying to pull us still. One of them pulls my arm hard enough to cause me to wince because of my ribs from the fall.
“When does Doctor Adams come to see me again?” Now that I’m thinking of it I want to know.
Cole: I'm laughing at the antics kids antics and about to point out the puppy pile at the edge of the sandbox when I notice her wince*
Hey, guys, guys, gentle with Miss Scarlett. She's got some boo boos she has to be careful with. Why don't you guys play with the pups at the sandbox for a while. They look like they could use somebody to play with. *As they run off, I answer* He wants to see you tomorrow. And I think I want him to x-ray those ribs again. Ladies, *nodding to the group of teachers* I think Scarlett's had enough of an outing for today. But *cheerfully* we'll be back soon. *scooping her up in my arms again* Time for you to rest some more. And, *as we move beyond earshot of even wolves,* And maybe have a bath. Warm water can be very soothing and I promise to be a perfect gentleman helping you in and out of the tub. *no matter what it costs me.*

Random Question Thing???
Random Question Thing??? I was tagged by @rowan-buzzard-whitethorn.   Sorry it took a bit for me to get back to this, you perfect ethereal beauty!
The three people to tag who are also perfect ethereal beauties: @valamerys @court-of-wildfire @sparkleywonderful (you know, if you want, no pressure) :)
1. Are you named after someone My middle name is a family name, it’s also my mother’s middle name and my daughter’s middle name - Faughn.
2. When was the last time you cried? Probably yesterday; I hate when you tear up when you get frustrated, ya feel me?  Sucks.  Need to retrain my body on that one.
3. Do you like your handwriting? Yeppers, we learned cursive in school back in my day.
4. What’s your favourite lunch meat? Smoked turkey.
5. Do you have kids? Yes, two, a 17 year old son and a soon-to-be 16 year old daughter.  Tristen and Trinity.
6. If you were another person, would you be friends with you?
Hell yeah, I rock!
7. Do you use sarcasm? Yep, but sometimes it’s so damn smooth people think I’m serious, and then they fear me...just the way I want it.
8. Do you still have your tonsils? Nope - got them removed as an adult and it almost KILLED me, I swear.  If you are young and get the chance, get them removed now; doing it when you are older means a ton more pain and a lot longer recovery; I (almost) wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.
9. Would you bungee jump? Hell yeah!  I rock climb and rapel every chance I get, but haven’t gotten around to bungee jumping yet.  I love the thrill!
10. What is your favourite kind of cereal? Totally depends on my mood.
11. Do you untie your shoes when you take them off? Always.
12. Do you think you’re a strong person? With everything this life has thrown at me and I’ve endured, you betchya.
13. What is your favourite ice cream? Depends on my mood.  Never chocolate; love chocolate everything else, but chocolate ice cream has a funny taste (to me).
14. What is the first thing you notice about people? How they treat me.  Are they truly interested, or just going through the motions?  Are they genuine, or bs-ing?  Do they really care about their interaction with me, or will I be forgotten two steps from now?  Are they respectful or too full of themselves?
15. What is your least favourite physical thing you like about yourself?
Um, probably the fact that I have to shave my legs and pits - I wish I was some supernatural vampire that didn’t have body hair in places I don’t want to have it, lol!
16. What colour pants and shoes are you wearing now?
I’m not wearing any of those :~)
17. What are you listening to right now? The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack.
18. If you were a crayon, what colour would you be? Green
19. Favourite smell? Fireside - it’s a scented candle, delicious!
20. Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone? My son.
21. Favourite sport to watch? Baseball in real life (never on the tv) and football anywhere.
22. Hair colour? I say strawberry blond to be easy with the answer, but it’s blond, red, silver and gold; if you’ve read JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series, I have Phury’s hair color!  And it’s ALL NATURAL, baby, I’ve never colored my hair.
23. Eye colour? Green
24. Do you wear contacts? Sometimes.
25. Favourite food to eat? Depends on my mood.
26. Scary movies or comedy? Totally depends on my mood.  Love both.
27. Last movie you watched? Thor and Thor 2.
28. What colour shirt are you wearing? Green
29. Summer or winter? Autumn
30. Hugs or kisses? Cuddles
31. What book are you currently reading? Just finished Crooked Kingdom (LOVE) and now I’m searching for my next read while I wait the next four days for the next book in the BDB series to arrive.
32.What do you miss right now? Long, lively discussions.
33. What is on your mouse pad? The cat, at the moment.
34. What is the last tv program you watched? Vampire Dairies; my daughter calls it, “All My Friends Are Dead”
35. What is the best sound? Rain and thunder.
36. Rolling stones or the Beatles? Beatles
37. What is the furthest you’ve ever travelled? Probably Canada, though I’ve been from California to Connecticut and Florida to North Dakota.
38. Do you have a special talent? Two; I have a knack for finding patterns and inefficiencies in complex systems, and I’ve guessed correctly on stuff with purely circumstantial evidence because I can use my common sense.
39. Where were you born? Indiana.

Step Inside the Perfectly Curated, Light-Filled Spartan Shop in Portland
Whether you’re visiting it in person or just browsing online, Spartan is one of those perfectly curated boutique shops that makes you spend hours perusing its collection of objects designed by independent designers and makers (trust us, we’ve been there, done that). Founded by Currie Person, Spartan has everything you could want for your home, from ceramics and home decor to bags and apothecary goods.
It’s been more than a decade since Currie has opened the Portland shop, and since then, Spartan has expanded into a studio that sources, styles, and strategizes for interior designers, hotels, restaurants, commercial and residential spaces. We’re thankful to have been able to catch up with Currie to talk more about how the business has changed since she’s started the shop and, of course, some of the special pieces currently in Spartan. Read on…
Why did you pick this city?
My husband and I fell in love with Portland on a road trip and moved here six years ago. We waited for several years before we relocated the shop from Austin to Portland because we wanted to acquire a deep understanding of the community we were coming into. We took our time hunting for a location with as much space and natural light as we could afford (critical for happiness in the rainy months). Finally, two summers ago, we stumbled upon a spacious corner showroom built in the early 1900’s with two walls of windows, 15 foot ceilings and views of the west hills. I couldn’t imagine a better space to work everyday.
Where did you get the name for the store?
The name was derived from the idea of Spartan minimalism, not necessarily aesthetic minimalism, but the ideal of owning fewer things that are thoughtfully chosen, beautifully designed and that reflect the hand and story of the maker.
Has it changed much since it opened? How?
I opened the shop when I was 29 and now I’m 40. The curation has changed quite a bit since the beginning and reflects our ever-maturing and evolving enthusiasm for artistry and craftsmanship, as well as our travels and experiences. That said, we believe in investing in long term relationships, both with the designers we represent and with our clients.
What’s one of the challenges you have with the business?
I feel guilty for not keeping up with the social media/advertising as much as I should. I honestly would prefer to spend my time talking with clients in the shop or on studio visits with artists, rather than endlessly strategizing digital content. I’m profoundly grateful for the community of loyal customers all over the world that has found us through social media, but it does feel like an insatiable beast at times.
What other stores have you worked in before opening this one?
None! I worked in film production for the first ten years of my professional life. I fumbled my way through the first few years of owning the shop with some sound advice from friends. I had no idea what I was doing but it was really fun. I’m definitely a trial by fire type of human.
What’s your favorite item in the store right now?
I have been quite taken with BDB’s newest ceramic pieces. I keep promising that I am going to buy one for myself but they disappear as soon as we get them into the shop. The modular stacking sculpture is a particular favorite.
What is this season’s theme/inspiration/story?
We don’t necessarily work towards particular themes or stories each season. However it is often quite apparent where we have been traveling by the visual influence or new artists we are representing.
Are you carrying any new products and/or undiscovered gems you’re particularly excited about?
Over the last year or two we have made a shift towards representing more one-of-a-kind pieces – ceramics from Mondays, ANK, Clam Lab, Mother of God and BDB as well as pillows by Jess Fuery, paintings by Amy Bernstein and Jen Garrido. The ephemerality has been fascinating. The feel of the shop changes noticeably with each new arrival and purchase, and customers get excited anticipating our art openings and new shipments of pieces- they often reach out asking for previews.
What’s been a consistent best seller?
Eric Bonnin dining plates have been a favorite for years. They are so handsome, a nice balance between sleek and earthy. Fferrone’s champagne glasses are the go-to special gift item of the moment.
Does the store have its own line? If not, any plans for it in the future?
We don’t have have an in house line but we enjoy collaborating with designers to create custom items for hospitality clients or exclusive/limited edition items for our own shop.
Any special events/exhibits/pop ups/collaborations coming up?
We are designer-in-residence for the incredible Antica Terra winery this fall. We are working with them to shape their tasting room experience and co-hosting some events later in the year.
Do you have anything from the store in your own home?
I have a lot of pieces that have arrived to us slightly cracked or chipped in transport and are not fit to sell – an army of beautiful, slightly broken soldiers. We recently moved into a new house and our first acquisitions were De Jong & Co dibbet stools for in front of the fireplace and a big ceramic planter by Mother of God.
What’s next for you and your store?
A new-ish arm of our business that we have been enjoying is working with interior designers, hotels and restaurants on placing custom pieces and/or curating their retail selections.
What’s one lesson you’ve learned since opening your store?
Community is everything. The people around you will raise you up emotionally and financially when times are hard. Be good to your customers and the businesses around you and they will do the same in return.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone who wants to follow a similar path to yours, what would it be?
Running a small business is immensely easier and more enjoyable with a strong and loyal team around you. Our business has always felt like a small family. Make a signifiant investment in your people personally and professionally and they will have your back and keep you sane.
Visit Spartan at 1210 SE Grand Ave, Portland, OR 97214!

Brenda Di Bari on Becoming A Successful New York Real Estate Player
Halstead’s own Brenda Di Bari isn’t just your ordinary broker, she’s a powerhouse! Brenda has always been a business woman but stepped up her game even more so after tragically losing her husband and having to raise 6 children on her own. Yes, 6 and that in itself is the toughest feat to accomplish but this power woman is getting it done every single day both personally and professionally. Social Life Magazine sat down with Brenda to get an in depth look at at her successful career.
SL: Tell us a little about your background. What led you to real estate and how long you’ve been in the business?
BDB: I got my first taste of the real estate business from the development/property management side. When I was still in college, I worked for a real estate developer in their property management office. Different from what I do now, but it opened my eyes to real estate as a business. Fast forward some years to 2003, I got my license as a real estate salesperson and it was an instant love affair! I went on to open my own brokerages in New York City and Miami, FL. I have been in residential sales for 15 years.
SL: What made you decide to work with Halstead and how is the work culture there?
BDB: I had a huge change in my personal life in 2011 (became a widow), which led me to move abroad and live in Italy for 4 years. When it was time to move back to NYC, I knew I wanted to expand my resources and network to offer my clients more services. I interviewed with the big firms and though others were impressive, there was a special energy to Halstead. It is the largest privately owned real estate company in New York City and maintains a supportive environment for its agents.
SL: How does Halstead get behind their brokers?
BDB: The element I find most important is the fact that whatever business or marketing concept I come up with as a creative thinker, they will listen, support and help me implement. When the market is tough, their accessibility and my focus equals a powerful combination!
SL: There are so many brokers vying for the same clients and positioning in the business. What are the qualities that make you stand out from others?
BDB: This is a very competitive business for sure and I thrive on that very culture. Some of the things you must have to succeed as a New York City real estate agent are not only a keen business acumen but  product and market knowledge, coop know-how, marketing and salesmanship skills and networking ability. Beyond that, you need to have exceptional listening and intuitive abilities. I definitely believe in myself as a unique value to my clients. I have not only run my own businesses in New York City for over 25 years, but I have also raised my 6 children in this very ambitious city. I am extremely motivated not only for my clients’ success but to be an example to my children as their mom and a woman in business.
SL: Do you find that being a woman in this business is easier or harder than it is for men?
BDB: We know that it has been established over and again that women have to prove themselves at a higher standard than their male counterpart in any business and often for less pay. Having said that, this is a fact that is changing and in particular residential real estate sales seem to be a fairly equal playing field for men and women. I will say that I personally feel no more or less competition from my peers based on gender.
SL: Where would you like to see your career in 5 years?
BDB: In 5 years I expect to have broadened my client base and team. This can only be attainable by delegating what can be delegated and focusing on what I do best, client service. I’m available to my clients 24/7 and I’m involved every step of the way. I under promise and over deliver and treat every client the same whether they’re a celebrity, an athlete or an individual just starting out.
SL: You’re a mother of 6, how hectic is it to get out of the house in the morning? I hope you have more than 1 bathroom!
BDB: I am indeed a mother of 6 but the funny thing about a larger family is that its members become autonomous by necessity! Three of my kids are now adults and gone are the baby days! I’m not going to pretend there isn’t a bathroom line to get ready in the morning, but we work it out.
SL: How do you find the work/home balance?
BDB: Balance is definitely a challenge, but I am definitely a multitasking master! My kids understand mommy works and I work 6-7 days a week. I have the luxury in this business of working from home on many tasks so that helps. I engage help where I can and I’m naturally blessed with incredible energy! I actually love to be busy.
SL: Let’s have some fun. What is your guilty pleasure?
BDB: I actually have several guilty pleasures.  I am a sucker for a good glass of wine, some dark chocolate, taken leisurely in front of any Bravo reality TV Show. I especially love all of the Real Housewives shows. I also indulge myself in tennis, yoga, horseback riding, the beach, me time. That’s where I find my balance.
SL: Favorite Italian restaurant in NYC?
BDB: For years it was Da Silvano but sadly, he closed. There are so many amazing Italian restaurants in NYC it’s hard to pick just one. Amongst my favorites are; I Sodi, Marea, Carbone, Morandi oh so many more!
SL: Favorite go-to sushi in NYC?
BDB: I love 15 East, Sushi Yasuda and Sushi Seki Chelsea.
SL: Chocolate or Vanilla?
BDB: Chocolate all the way, the darker the better!
SL: Red or White?
BDB: Red if we’re talking wine, but white if we’re talking interior décor or fashion.
SL: Favorite Holiday?
BDB: Thanksgiving! It’s about gratitude and time with family and friends over food. It kicks off the big holiday season, the weather is usually nice and crisp outside (at least here in NYC) and everything just feels possible!
SL: What would you tell your 8-year old self?
BDB: I would tell my 8-year old self not to waste time disguising your true self to conform to societal expectations. It took me far too many years to embrace my own uniqueness and not care what anyone else thinks.

How To Choose The Right Window Covering For Various Rooms In Your Home
Choosing window coverings for your windows? Here’s exactly how to choose the right window covering for multiples rooms in your home!

In many houses, it just doesn’t feel like home until the windows are covered. But choosing the right kind of window treatment isn’t always easy. The window covering you use define the space and can either make it feel homey, stately, or traditional. For some people, that might vary from room to room. If you are someone who wants to create different “feels” within your home, then altering your window treatments can do the trick to make each room spectacular in its own unique way.
When to use Curtains or Draperies
Curtains and draperies create a much different ambiance in a room than other window treatments. They have a more traditional feel and provide more privacy because they create an excellent sound and light buffer. Curtains are a great way to make your bedroom more comfortable and warm or make your family room the perfect space for spending private time with your loved ones.

BDB Tip: When you use curtains or draperies, the type of fabric you use is also important. Solid colors can create a more contemporary look, while patterns can add a bit of eclectic ambiance to any space.
Drapes and curtains are also a good way to add texture to a room or to create warmth. If you want the feel of fabric without blocking out the light, you can choose a sheer panel. That will provide you with the privacy you desire, but it will also let in the natural light that can cheer up dark or sheltered areas.
Perfect for the Dining Room
Formal dining rooms are making a comeback, as people want to have more privacy and spend time together as a family. Draperies are the perfect traditional decor for your private dining room to shield your family meals and to create a welcoming and inviting space for family and friends.

Do you have an upcoming dinner party? The simple task of cleaning your windows can boost your curb appeal and make your home look twice as nice indoors as well!
When to use Blinds or Roman Shades
Blinds or Roman shades are a fantastic decorating idea to keep a space less cluttered and make it more crisp and contemporary. With clean lines, they help to block out light and also regulate the temperature from the outside in. Since they don’t create a heavy look, they don’t distract from the decor, and they form an empty template to let the other parts of your room shine. Blinds are excellent for bedroom privacy, or for bathrooms where you don’t want anyone to peek in.

Blinds and Roman shades are also much easier to keep clean and come in many different options. Although the standard 2.5-inch blind is the most popular, blinds now come without any dangerous pulls and can be pushed from the top down or the bottom up. They can also be very versatile for rooms like your office or den. Roman shades also come in different textures and colors to enhance the space. The key is to use darker blinds to make your smaller areas appear larger.
Are Vertical Blinds Making a Comeback?
Although vertical blinds have been on the decline since the 1990s, they are making a comeback since they are easier to operate via remote control. There is nothing more convenient for any space in your home than being able to open and close the blinds remotely. You never have to get out of bed or off of the couch to shade the room from the rising or setting sun.

BDB Tip: There is also the option of having blinds installed inside the window itself. That makes it easier to keep them clean, which can be a huge convenience. It also keeps little fingers from getting into them. Blinds are best for areas that are less formal and more functional, like living and family rooms.
With so many options to dress up your windows and make them look elegant, it can sometimes be overwhelming to choose. It’s not an inexpensive endeavor, but you aren’t limited to just blinds, draperies, or Roman shades as a staple throughout your home. Each room can have its own feel depending on what window treatment you choose. It is best to live in a space first and then determine what you would like to see on the windows before investing, especially for new homeowners. Go slow and choose wisely: the choice of window coverings is more important than you think.
