Animal/Human Hybrids

mermaid/siren

mermaids, commonly known as fish/ human hybrids, are one of the most common of the fantasy sea folk. originally seen as creatures that use their voice to attract unsuspecting ship men to their death. due to their target being men on ships, the mermaids were commonly seen as female until recent times where the male version (merman) has been popularised. mermaids are also now beloved to children, mainly girls, due to movies such as the little mermaid. they're considered colourful and beautiful so there's a huge range of art and references on the internet.

unfortunately, i will not be using mermaids for my project. they may be cool creatures but they wouldn't work well with my chaotic escape plot as they cannot walk, making them no longer a fret. this would only work if they were in there natural habitat being large rocky cliffs in the middle of the ocean, or at least a beach.

werewolf

werewolves (lycanthrope) , commonly known as wolf/ human hybrids, are beloved creatures in horror and folklore. The premise of them is that during a full moon a regular everyday man/ women will transform into a wolf. there are many wolf forms depicted through fiction but i prefer the more humanoid ones compared to the average wolf. this makes them a lot cooler and terrifying. these wolves have been given special weaknesses such as silver and a special flower called wolf's-bane. 

These creatures would be great to use in my project, they're powerful and terrifying and could easily massacre hundreds of people. this could also link back to freakshows as there's quite a few werewolves/ wolfmen through out history and fiction.

faun

fauns, also known as goat/ human hybrids, are mythological creatures that were symbols of peace and fertility. a faun is commonly depicted to have the legs and tail of a goat and upper half of a human, this appearance was borrowed from the Greek god pan. a common childhood depiction is the fictional character Mr  Tumnus

unfortunately, i defiantly wont be using fauns for my project. the main reason is because they're sweet and harmless so trying to put them in a violent horror just wouldn't work out well.

centaur

centaurs, also known as horse/ human hybrids are mythological creatures with the upper body of a human and the lower of a horse. Centaurs are thought to be as wild as untamed horses yet strong powerful warriors. they're commonly found in tribes.

despite being powerful in there own right, i don't really see them as a threat, they aren’t hunters the same way a vicious werewolf is. a long side they don't look very intimidating, I'm looking for more feral blood thirst not ancient land warrior.

harpy

harpies, also known as bird/ human hybrids are mythical creatures commonly found in Homeric poems. they used to be commonly depicted as ugly creatures with a body of a bird and face of a women. this over the years have shifted to a more modern interpretation of a person with wings and tail feathers along side other bird like characteristics. i much prefer this interpretation as it allows for more interesting designs for epic fantasy horror.

despite the original harpies to be very boring, i really like the modern day interpretation as they're interesting and not explored enough in fiction. also the idea of flying creatures for my project really inspires me with help of the first Jurassic park movie as they featured a pterosaurs attack.

gods

there are many gods through out religion that are depicted to be half human half animal. for example u have Baphomet, the half human half goat god that's commonly mistaken for a interpretation of Satan. they're very popular in Greek and Egyptian mythology.

despite a god having the ability to be very scary and terrifying, the issue is they're a singular person not a species, and due to the fact of being a god, it would be very hard o keep them in a zoo.#

here's an A3 sheet I didn't brain storming the different animal/ human hybrids. I looked at the ones found on this list (except gods) as well as a few others such as a spider/human hybrid as well as the popular medusa and a small moth man. I didn't focus too much on design in these drawings as I just wanted to map out the basic concept of each creature. for example I played around with body types and races.
