10 years of Rainbow Direction!
Exactly 10 years ago a girl named Danny printed out this rainbow poster and took it to the first concert of One Direction's Where We Are tour:
Tumblr media
Anniversaries are always a bit arbitrary, and Rainbow Direction's was always a hard one to pin down.
This blog is just a day or two short of celebrating 11 years and without it Rainbow Direction would have never existed, because the people who were at the start of it would never have met, but its purpose and setup were entirely different and RD was still far from being developed.
The suggestions that eventually took form in "Project Rainbow Direction" were first submitted to the blog in late 2013. The first brainstorm between Kat, Li and Ellis about it, and further strategy talks with Ed and Molly took place in the early months of 2014. The project was announced in February. Haven and Red submitted their winning poster designs in March. Amy developed a logo and opened a merch store for us in early April.
While we've often referred to that midnight brainstorm on a cold January day as the origin of rainbow direction, that was only its conception. We don't even have a record of which date it was. We could also have chosen any of the more pin-downable dates: announcing the project, announcing the poster contest winners, opening the store. But really, all that Rainbow Direction was at those moments, was an idea, a plan, the hope that we had that it was within our, the fandom's power, to change something for the better for the LGBTQIA+ fans in it.
For months all of us, and especially Li, had worked tirelessly to encourage people to sign up and commit to bringing a rainbow poster to a show.
And then the big moment was there. First day of tour. The moment of truth. Would the people we'd encouraged actually have the courage to take a rainbow to a show, and stick it up in the air? Would it matter to people? Would it actually change something?
10 years on, we know that it did. So much more than we could ever have imagined.
But that was was anything but self-evident at the time. We had no idea. We nervously monitored the wwa tag and the blogs of those who had signed up, and then, after a few days, finally this report appeared. Danny from Bogota shared the first Rainbow Direction fan report.
I think if you'd ask any of us who were here at the time, they'd remember fondly how knowing that someone had actually done it, something happened in the real world, and if one person had done it, more would, how that sparked a fire in our hearts. A ball of warm feelings, not quite the same feeling as before. Before, there had been buzz and excitement and drive, but this, this felt different. Hope. A sense of the personal strength, and collective power, that could come from this if we could make it grow. It took a lot of hard work from a lot of people who committed themselves tirelessly to the campaign, but grow it did.
Thanks to Danny. Thanks to all of you who at some point or other, crafted something rainbow at home, took a rainbow to a show, put a rainbow on your blog, showed that you believed in your own power to change something, and showed the LGBTQI+ people in the fandom that they mattered, and that you cared.
It has been quite the roller coaster ride. As the coordinating group, we've had many ups and downs, and by now, for most of us, our attention has been drawn away from the fandom by our real lives and new pursuits. But regularly, when one of us checks in and sees the rainbows at one of the boys' shows, we share, revel, and sit amazed at how this thing, that once took so much effort on our part to get one, two, three people per show signed up, has grown into a regular staple, with people spontaneously taking it upon themselves to organize for entire venues to light up in a coordinated rainbow pattern, to design new posters and rainbow outfits, or to hand out hundreds of mini rainbow flags in the audience. This community has taken it up as its collective responsibility - let's get those rainbows out. How beautiful is that?! You are all so so amazing.
Thank you, you beautiful people, for becoming a part of this, for making it your own, for making it better, for carrying it forward, into the future.
So long!

Paul and Linda, a collection of PDAs: Part 1 - Kisses
In our walk down the memory lane of Paul and Linda’s love story, which still captivates the romantics and the expressive artists out there, we start with an excerpt of an interview.
Rolling Stone cover June 17, 1976: “Yesterday, Today, and Paul.” In this interview, Paul says something interesting:
I mean, I kissed Linda onstage the other night, and for me, that’s kind of, ‘Wow, I must be getting real relaxed,’ ’cause I can’t do that in public, normally. I’m a bit kinda shy.
Paul McCartney shy about showing affection? Well, artists are certainly a different breed. He can sing a heartfelt love song in a venue full of people, but has to work up the courage to give his wife a little kiss? As photos will tell, he soon got over that quirk.
And even before this RS interview, he could certainly be demonstrative when a photographer or videographer was around, whereas the average person would be more guarded knowing that their tender moment would soon be out there as a picture in a magazine or a video clip on TV (we’re talking pre-internet days here).

1970 or 1971. Aww, so sweet.

June 1971 The video for the song “Heart of The Country” was made in Scotland. Is that a kiss? We might have to examine the still pic below.

1974 Photoshoot for the Apr. 7, 1974, issue of New York News magazine. The cover story was "Just an Old Fashioned Beatle: An Exclusive Visit with Linda and Paul McCartney." Aww, lips softly touching the cheek is something I’m going to classify as a kiss.

What's one photo you're really proud of? Robert Rosen: I love the shot of Paul and Linda McCartney kissing. As soon as I had it developed I just thought, wow, I did that. I sent them a print but didn't hear anything more until a few months later, when, Paul and Linda turned up to a gallery event I happened to be at. At one point, Linda tapped me on the shoulder and said, 'Are you ignoring us?' She gave me a big hug and told me they loved the photo. That obviously meant a great deal to me.

hi friends,
I won’t be using my social media accounts anymore -  at least for quite a while. it’s been a long time coming.
new work is happening, of course. I need some level of isolation to maintain the focus I’m after. I’m eager to begin planning another installation, and start submitting to galleries again for the first time in a while.
while I step back from my online presence, I will still be posting on patreon, where I’ve just posted a video tour of my filled sketchbook (my first voiceover!) and will soon be sharing some behind the scenes information on the process of binding three new ones.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m really looking forward to sharing more of my process over there. the support I’ve gotten so far is so very appreciated, and it’s been nice to have a place to share slightly longer-form content. I think you will like what’s to come.
my birthday was on monday, and my wonderful partner Peter surprised me with a scanner. I’ve gotten my 5+ year old 35mm film rolls developed, and I am over the moon to finally be able to work with film again. and, as you may know, I’m renovating a found dollhouse. the automatic drawing experiments also continue, and I’ve got paintings in the back of my mind again. it’s all connected. to see these things as they happen, patreon access starts at $3. the work will be shared publicly later on, but I’m leaning into seclusion until it is time. what that being said, if there is a gallery in a city near you that you’re especially fond of, please reach out - I’m seeking to expand my range of consideration when it comes to doing shows.
in regards to my patreon, there are only three days left to sign up to receive my very first monthly package subscription box. every month is a surprise. a sculpture? a small painting? an original drawing? a miniature? you don’t know what it will be, and that’s the fun. it’s like a present. and sometimes there will be an extra thing. check out my patreon here.
Tumblr media
there are also only three days left to pre-order prints of my moth paintings! these signed 11x14” giclée prints on textured paper are ONLY available for pre-order and will NOT be for sale after (being a small artist means producing prints up front is not always financially possible - doing pre-orders allows me to offer prints when I otherwise couldn’t afford production costs). pre-orders end april 30th. prints will be shipped flat by june 30th. preorder here.
Tumblr media
looking forward to what’s to come,
talula

WORLD COLLAGE DAY EVENT
Call to Artists: Collage Offering – Street Collage Exhibition
9 May, 7PM-open ended Studio RGF Arriaza 11 Madrid 28008 Spain
Deadline: April 30th. This year Fantasía Collage will once again celebrate with a three-day POPUP with guided tours and an exhibition of the submitted collages at the StudioRGF in Madrid. Artists are invited to make a collage in any size, preferably without a background, in which the flowers are the protagonists. The collages will not be returned. Once the exhibition is over, they will be pasted on the street. Fantasía Collage writes, “May is the month of abundance, of harvests. The fields are filled with intense colors and flowers are in their maximum splendor. This year Fantasía Collage proposes flooding the streets by filling the walls with flowers and colors. Honoring the Holy Scissors, our pagan collage goddess, with an exhibition that symbolizes a huge altar (mural) for her. We implore you with our Collages Offerings for the end of wars and for the end of violence against the weakest. We want to make this day an artistic festival that celebrates life with respect and love.” Read More
*****************************
Kolaj Magazine, a full color, print magazine, exists to show how the world of collage is rich, layered, and thick with complexity. By remixing history and culture, collage artists forge new thinking. To understand collage is to reshape one's thinking of art history and redefine the canon of visual culture that informs the present.

Peter Tork and his grandmother, Catherine McGuire Straus (in photo 2 at the premiere of Head, 1968; photo by Art Zelin/Getty Images).
“One of my favorite people in the world is my ‘Grams,’ Mrs. Catherine McGuire Straus. She lives in Manhattan in the West 50’s. She calls Colgems regularly to check on our record sales, keeps an enormous scrapbook on the activities of the Monkees (favoring me a little bit, of course), and she visits all the record stores regularly to make sure that they are well stocked with Monkees singles and LP’s.” - Peter Tork, 16’s The Monkees: Here We Are (1967)
Many are no doubt familiar with Peter’s grandmother’s contributions to U.S. teen magazines. A few things that might have have fallen through the cracks of Tork and Monkees history are his grandmother’s letters to two British music magazines in 1967...
“As the grandmother of one Monkee, Peter Tork, I have received hundreds of delightful letters from British fans of the Monkees. Recently there have been complaints that some magazines do not print pictures of Peter when they are doing a story on the Monkees. But I find Monkee pictures fairly well distributed in all the pop magazines, though Davy Jones more or less rules the roost! Also received complaints about Peter not appearing with his co-Monkees when they were in London in February. I would assume that the working hours he has every day, seven days a week, are not conducive to his spending a vacation with one’s workers. And I assure you Peter has a mind of his own, so he couldn’t be persuaded to join them. He’s at last been seen and heard — ‘fine’ by his British fans. Do hope the concerts were a SMASHING success — to use a Britishism!” - Catherine McGuire Straus, Disc & Music Echo, July 15, 1967
“Having belatedly read the article by Jeremy Walsh on the Monkees, as the grandmother of one Monkee — Peter Tork — I resent it. It seems to me unnecessarily nasty and rude. His attacks on the group are peculiarly venomous, considering that the Monkees cannot have done anything to promote such anger and, in fact, are the delight of most critics. Well, there’s no use laboring the point. One can only wonder why the hostility. And why make comparisons with the Beatles. Either the Monkees are good in their own right or they’re not. There’s nothing else to consider, is there. Incidentally Peter was marked for the academic world, where both his parents teach. He flunked out of college twice. After his sojourn in Greenwich Village and the concert tours, decided he’d head for the West Coast and Hollywood — every actor’s Mecca. Over 400 applicants auditioned for the Monkees — Peter was one of the four selected and so the Monkees were born etc. Last, but not least, the U.S.A. helped to bring fame and fortune to the Beatles and their super manager, Brian Epstein. Let the British do likewise for the Monkees.” - Sincerely yours, Catherine McG. Straus, Record Mirror, April 8, 1967
“I received hundreds of delightful letters, many of which I answered, in answer to my protest about the article on the Monkees by Jeremy Walsh. All I want is for these charming teenagers to know how grateful I am for their love and devotion to the Monkees.” - Catherine McG. Straus, Record Mirror, June 17, 1967
Here’s part of the opinion of one Jeremy Walsh, referenced by Peter’s grandmother:
“If four good-looking boys, with no talent, can top the charts — can beat the sales of real stars — then it’s all worthless. I’m not saying they can’t play at all. I’m saying that they can’t play well. I’m also saying that their TV series, fount of 90 per cent of their disc fame, is blatantly based on the earlier Beatle films… and that they owe a lot of their disc hits to Beatle influences. I’d feel less strongly about them if only they had tried to adapt something completely new. It’s like some massive act of retaliation by the Americans, still smarting over Beatle-domination. […] The Monkee business really makes me smart. The only consolation is that it should be a short craze. Several people will make their million, then cheerfully abandon the whole project.” - Jeremy Walsh, Record Mirror, February 4, 1967

I have a question for the authors! Why do authors wait so long to release their books to the public after it’s finished edits and printed? You for example, why wait until May for the release? Just something I’ve always been curious about. If it’s for the anticipation alone, it works!
Very excited first SITD, btw
Hi friend!! Great question.
We have set a very conservative release date to allow us a comfortable time to go through the final stages of publishing, which go far beyond finishing the first draft. We’re really hoping to reach a wider audience with SITD, so we’re taking the time to get more beta reader feedback than we did on our last book, and formal edits.
The later release in May was also chosen strategically — looking at other major book releases and holidays that might impede sales or overshadow SITD.
ALSO, I have a ton of personal stuff going on including my sister’s wedding + maid of honor duties in Feb 2, health issues, relationship etc that eat up a ton of time and energy. The later promise gives us time to make sure the book is perfect. But we’ve not been sitting around! Here’s what we’ve done and continue to do since finishing the initial manuscript:
• Outline and plan book two (and three and four)
• Submitted manuscript to editor (currently awaiting feedback in order to make revisions)
• finished the cover design
• begin cover design for book two (and three)
• research marketing book tours
• research contests/awards to budget for submission
•wrote and submitted dozens of query letters to literary agents
• created street team for promotions
• working on 33 unique grayscale illustrations for the chapter title pages in the book
• Plan out special signed copy Hunter, Fairy, or Both boxes for pre-order in April. (Boxes will include a signed paperback of SITD, a homemade candle, a printed page or two from Cliff’s journal, poptarts, art print, and more!)
Everyone’s publishing timeline looks different, and we do hope to pick up the pace after the wedding passes, but that’s why we chose May haha! If we can publish quicker than a book in a year I would love to.
We are however planning a special revision and re-release of The Heart Between Kingdoms, coming late this year most likely. The book will be split into three books and include new covers, illustrations, and revised manuscripts. Maybe story tweaks — not sure yet!

Happily
In the 2019 Fine Line Rolling Stone interview While talking about Lights Up he said:
“‘Happily’ was the first time I saw my name in the credits. I liked that,” he says. “But I knew I’d only sing part of it. I knew if I wrote a really personal song, I wouldn’t sing it. It was like a safety net."
He also listed it as one of the 1D songs he loved to Rolling Stone after going solo:
He didn’t feel stifled in One D, he says, as much as interrupted. “We were touring all the time,” he recalls. “I wrote more as we went, especially on the last two albums.” There are songs from that period he loves, he says, like “Olivia” and “Stockholm Syndrome,” along with the earlier song “Happily.” “But I think it was tough to really delve in and find out who you are as a writer when you’re just kind of dipping your toe each time. We didn’t get the six months to see what kind of shit you can work with. To have time to live with a song, see what you love as a fan, chip at it, hone it and go for that  … it’s heaven.”
Happily was written by Harry with Carl Falk and Savan Kotecha, who wrote many One Direction songs including What Makes you Beautiful. Midnight Memories was written between June - September 2013.
Tumblr media
It may be set around April 2013 and the Brit Awards, Harry watched Taylor walk 21 Feb, she was then with Joe 0.1 Tom Odell 22 Feb. By the VMAs in August they were on good terms. Tom wrote Country Star about Taylor at the time which included "young American country star / She's telling me all about her new guitar / She's a little bit clever, a little bit daft / A little bit happy with a broken heart" it also included "We're rolling 'round like tangerines" when Harry was pictured holding one at the awards.
Live Performances
Happily was song 7 for the first 8 shows on the OTRA tour. Harry looked upset in these performances, in the second last in Perth, you see Liam ask Harry "are you OK?" (at 1:01) on 20 February 2015. It was last played 24 February 2015 in Osaka, the day Taylor met Calvin Harris. It hasn't been on any of their solo sets. It was replaced by Stockholm Syndrome on 25 February.
youtube
Lyrics
[Harry] You don't understand, you don't understand What you do to me when you hold his hand We were meant to be but a twist of fate Made it so you had to walk away
What I love about this song is it has all the elements of their relationship in quite simple terms. In NYD, You are in Love and DBATC she sung about them being a book that was left unfinished, I think this open is a similar idea of ended too soon.
[Niall, Zayn] 'Cause we're on fire We are on fire
They were (are still) on fire:
youtube
[Harry] I don't care what people say when we're together You know I wanna be the one to hold you when you sleep I just want it to be you and I forever I know you wanna leave So c'mon baby be with me So happily
These articles are all within 6 months of them going public, imagine one of these written about you at 18 or 22. Add to that each having an image worth 10s+ of millions of dollars to lots of people.
Tumblr media
Happily "I don't care what people say",
I know places "Something happens when everybody finds out / See the vultures circling, dark clouds / Love's a fragile little flame, it could burn out"
DWOHT " People started talking, putting us through our paces / I knew there was no one in the world who could take it"
Adore You "I'd walk the fire for you",
Cowboy Like Me "Telling all the rich folks anything they wanna hear / Like it could be love / I could be the way forward / Only if they pay for it", and
Little Freak "Somehow, you've become some paranoia, A wet dream just dangling"
honestly, this list of lyrics could get real long so I'll stop.
Makes total sense for them. This doesn't mean it would not be harder still for them to come out, it totally would, and I am there for it if either do. What I can see is, either way is this is not welcoming. This is also just print media. Some fandoms are loud.
[Liam] It's four a.m. and I know that you're with him I wonder if he knows that I touched your skin And if he feels my traces in your hair Sorry, love, but I don't really care
I think this is a reference to Joe 0.1. Tom Odell. The lyric and context is almost the same as Taylor later sung in Delicate "Do the girls back home touch you like I do? Long night with your hands up in my hair"

I wrote this three days ago.
These are just my thoughts as I continue to process this very pivotal moment in BTS’s career.
It has only been ten days since the “hiatus/it’s not a hiatus” announcement was made.
Jimin said, please just take their words as they are. I hear you Jiminie.
But my brain is a mess.
They were too somber during the Festa dinner. Especially toward the end. They say it was filmed about a month ago, like May 20.
We saw them last week on the music shows. Some time has passed sinced filming Festa dinner. They looked good and dare I say happy? Joon’s been spotted out of the country the last few days. Damn you people and your inability to not post that sort of shit. But anyway...he’s back now.
Something major happened to change the direction they had hoped to take this year. Six months ago, everything was in high gear in anticipation of COVID restrictions being rolled back:
Remembering some of the things they’ve been saying since the AMA’s and Jingle Bell Rock red carpet interviews last year:
Tumblr media
They all blinked like their eyeballs were about to fall out. They were thrilled to be spilling tea about a tour and new music...
Now I wonder if they were ready to finish off an album of all new songs, or if they had planned this anthology all along. Regardless, they could have pulled off a sold out world tour with PROOF the anthology. ARMY WANTS TO SEE THEM!!! IT’S BEEN ALMOST 3 FUCKING YEARS!
I think they were also working on or at least considering solo stuff too and I think they had it all timed out how things would just fall into place. I think that’s what they said about the MOTS tour, then taking a break for solo work was really their plan with a definite timeline.
COVID cancelled all that. And now the military service has left the timeline non-existent because they still have no definite answers. Or maybe they do and the timeline now extends way into the future.
The timing of all this is just.... I want to take your words as you say them Namjoon.
But six months ago, you all seemed to be preparing for a world tour.
I think once they learned about their military status in late April or May I think that’s when Jimin said OK I better get this done if I wanna do it because he did say during the Festa dinner that he just started working on it. He said he wanted to do it properly.
So I think all of this just happened quickly since April and I think it’s just a hard thing to work through psychologically for them, especially after having everything first snatched away by COVID and now this. Please, God, please let them make their way through this and be stronger than ever as a group. They have so much to give the world.
We know we’ve heard both sides of the military service debate regarding BTS’ service and how many people (even within their own country) think they deserve to be exempted because of everything they bring to the table already to their country. BTS contributes billions of dollars to their country’s economy.
I am not Korean or live in Korea and I will not state my opinion here about what I think should happen. I am just stating the different sides of the coin for consideration.
The ripple effect will be profound though. From the small companies that create the actual physical albums and their packaging, the print shops that create the photocards we all cherish, to the hundreds on staff that work for them when the giant machine is in motion preparing for those world tours: the stage production crews, the video production crews, the dancers, the stylists, the wardrobe people, the marketing/promotional people, the administrative people who pay the bills...the taxes the corporation pays...will be gone if revenues of the company goes down. We already saw the immediate effect on HYBE’s bottomline the moment they said the word “hiatus.” That’s instant impact. I hope it was a wake up call to some individuals in their government.
I WROTE THIS THREE DAYS AGO. Before people started sending out “official statements” to BTS to curtail this hiatus.
After the Festa dinner, 24 year-old Jungkook jumped on V Live the next morning, washed his dishes and soothed the stock market...if that’s not impact I don’t know what is.
A prosperous country is better equipped and has more resources to handle challenges such as high unemployment, social programs and housing crises than a poor country. Even if they can’t solve the issues they can at least afford to argue about them. In a poor country, everyone is poor. A poor country just tries to keep their people alive and not be invaded. I just stated all of those concepts very simply but in reality they are very, very complex issues.
We also hear the other side where it is a “right of passage” for men in South Korea to do their military service. It is very honorable and patriotic and many many people hold those values in the highest degree. Also, many are against an exemption for them especially those who have already served. Or some are against preferential treatment of any kind.
South Korea and North Korea are still in a state of war with each other. That’s the reality. I cannot find the source but I read that there’s been over 70,000 exemptions from duty since the 1970′s when conscription was put into law. I would go ahead and venture to say these 7 men fall into any of the categories of consideration these previous 70,000 are in that gained an exemption.
Both arguments for enlistment or for exemption are very valid to those who fall on either side. Each individual member of BTS is capable of deciding on their own what is the best for them personally or what is important to them personally.
We all know that many people, men and women, thrive in the military. It’s their life’s calling. But we’ve also heard the horror stories of psychological impairment that can result in individuals exposed to the trauma of war especially those injured in combat.
I fully believe that governments need to maintain their militaries to the highest degree. Look at Ukraine...what I thought would be unthinkable in this day and age is reality...anything is possible.
I fully respect everyone who serves and I am so thankful and grateful that they do. I can understand how this whole situation for them is stressful. I can understand how Namjoon and the other members are feeling about wanting BTS to have a legacy. I can see how he is mixed up. I hope he clears his mind and finds his resolve.
Now that they’ve served in diplomatic capacities, now that they’ve represented their country beyond just music, it’s understandable they don’t want to be just a K-pop group.
The lack of a definite decision over their military service from the government, what it would consist of and the timing of it really messed them up this year. And I think Namjoon’s growing state of conflict dovetailed with the inability to make a plan for the rest of the year and beyond and just threw everything out of whack. But maybe all this have been decided and we, the fans, just don’t know what it is yet.
So perhaps there’s yet another source of distress for them. Maybe the results of the South Korean election, which took place March 9 of this year, took them by surprise, not being what they expected. It was a very close election, the results were 49% to 48% with the popular vote being 16,394,815 to 16,147,738.
During the Festa dinner Namjoon said, “am I speaking as BTS, or am I speaking my own personal preferences?” Perhaps the things Namjoon is thinking now are very controversial. Maybe they all have different views on what is happening in their country and are affected by it differently and that can cause conflict. He wants BTS to send a message to the world and right now I think that message is very, very acutely negative toward the South Korean government and I can see how much conflict that could cause.
I wonder if they really did think they were going to get some sort of exemption or something else that fit more with their ability to carry out a world tour etc. I mean all the things they said about planning for a world tour happened before the election and maybe they were optimistic that the other party was going to win. But the other party didn’t and now things seem to be drastically different in their country.
We wonder why JK is covering up some of his previous tattoo work. Jungkook was on a mission to “save” his arm. Maybe he’s felt those images did not represent him any longer. I wonder what caused him to reconsider some of them. He covered up some of the most Korean-centric images: the tiger and the three bars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This current government does not represent him, Jeon Jungkook, as the Korean individual that he is..anyway those are just my thoughts. We don’t know why he changed them, only he knows.
Perhaps they are playing a card...they said it’s hard to know what to choose, one day they’re here and the next they aren’t...so they played this card. Now let’s see what happens. Gambling with their future as BTS with the government of their own country. Balls of steel I tell you.
I WROTE THIS THREE DAYS AGO!!!!
We are hearing outsiders claim there might be disenchantment with HYBE America. From what I can gather, HYBE America is owned by HYBE Corporation. HYBE Labels is the music division of HYBE Corporation. BigHit Entertainment, BTS’s label, is a subsidiary of HYBE Labels and operates independently from HYBE corporation. HYBE America and HYBE Labels are two different companies. So I am not sure what influence HYBE America could be having on BTS.
They were upset because they could not tell us all these things that have influenced this 180 degree turnaround from six months ago, of them looking forward to a world tour this year. The rules of the world weighing them down.
I am listening, Jimin, when you said “just take our words as they are.” I trust you.
I am going to wait for whenever BTS comes back together as a group, whether that is next year or five years from now and until then I will support all 7 of them in their endeavors.
Like everyone else, I will be sitting here to see how it all unfolds with each day.

April Fool's Day Guilt Trip
Hi Skippy & Friends-Pilgrim here on a drenched April Fool’s day mumbling about the latest press story (that was $omehow printed) about why they…the stinking Harkles…must attend the coronation. This one really was just too funny to let slip by on this auspicious date!
This writer for the NY Post, a Nika Shakhnazarova, states that “skipping the historic celebration-which coincides with Prince Archie’s 4th birthday-the exiled royals may cause a "fatal” rift with the Firm.“ Going even further she quotes "a no-show would be the fatal, irreversible blow, both in the public perception as well, potentially, as within the family itself,” a royal public relations expert Edward Coram-James told GB News.” Is he serious or has he had too much Avocado Kool-Aid? Wow! Veiled threats included with ILBW’s usual writing “tells”. Desperation has no low as Diva wrings guilt tripping to find a spot at the big event.
By the way, I can’t seem to summon up much interest in the May 6th event even though it is historic. If I watch it will be on mute or without commentary too. I just hate when the ice-skating competitions let the talking heads ruin an outstanding performance with their interruptions. It looks like these super rich, newly crowned royal seniors are going on a 2 year world class tour after their long awaited event. Are they celebrating retirement? Can you imagine their traveling demands? Their staff has to pack massive amounts of personal items including furniture, paintings, special beds and bedding, toilet seats, food & drink etc etc etc just to visit friends in the country! Perhaps their press photos will steamroll the junk the Mont-deceito duo comes up with-one can only hope.
Another concern with the King & Queen away is whether this creates an opening for Harold to slither through the porous castle walls? Hopefully, Prince William will have real authority as the “substitute adminitrator” to protect the kingdom! We shall see what KCIII has in the works. Over and out for now.
Great post!  Thank you!  Yes, we wait and see😁

Thinking about the people Louis wrote songs with for Faith In The Future, their affiliation with BMG, the timing of Louis signing with BMG and the timing of their songwriting sessions. Felix Howard, A&R at BMG, once signed Calvin Harris, James McMorrow, Hurts, Lewis Capaldi. (Hurts is also managed by seven7management).
Louis wrote songs in fall 2020, prior to signing with BMG —i.e. in October 2020. Did signing with BMG influence him not to include Copy and Change on his album?
Louis’ affiliation with BMG was reported May 2021. He left Syco July 2020.
So between July 2020 and May 2021, there were ten months where Louis was presumably looking for a new label. He was writing songs prior to signing, but not with BMG’s roster of artists. He tweeted about writing with Jamie Hartman in October 2020; none of those songs made it to the new album. The only carry-over from Walls is Dave Gibson.
Once Louis signed with the new label, the songwriting accelerated. My guess is that Louis had signed with BMG as of December 2020, and he started contacting people to work with. Their time table was to release FITF after LTWT22, using LTWT22 sort of as a gauge for the vision and sound of FITF. It would already be nearly two years after signing with BMG, and the label would want an album by this time.
The songwriting for FITF went into hyperdrive late summer to winter of 2021, but the album would not be finished until midway through LTWT22. Felix Howard and other BMG people being at Louis’ concerts in USA, Latam, and Europe makes sense. They were trying to see how his audience responds to his live shows. Their conclusion: the audience is fervent but young, and not too smart. But we (or our parents) have deep pockets.
Unfortunately, BMG had to wait for the LTWT22/ Walls tour because Louis owed the tour as a contractual obligation to Sony. Therefore BMG could not promote the tour. However, they could use the tour to study Louis’ fandom. BMG’s conclusion was that Louis’ fandom skews heavily toward 1D nostalgia and Larry. The promo, and Louis’ talking points, reflect this conclusion.
Louis’ soundbite that he decided to work with “artists rather than professional songwriters this time” may be part of BMG’s marketing strategy/ vision. He was “more authentic” now, didn’t want to chase charts and numbers, because BMG had already decided to focus on the sizable 1D fandom.
Now, a little discussion about the timing of the leaks that included an early production of Lucky Again (presumably recorded late summer, 2021), All Along, and The Way I Do, the latter two being songs he probably wrote while under Syco (prior to July 2020) although I’m not sure about that. Lyrics from these leaks were sent to Tumblr Larries in April 2022, and the audio files were also sent to Twitter Larries, in August 2022. The target was Larries— Louis’ biggest fandom. They also knew that fandom would reliably spread the leaks.
FITF had already been mastered and printed by August 2022, so what was the point of leaking these tracks? Perhaps to gauge how fandom would react to the storyline of the album, and the sound (also none of these leaks, including The Greatest, were the final versions, so fans would still buy the final album).
Anyway… these are some of my thoughts about the timeline and the promo talking points.
Addendum re: @berlinini’s tags about Live From London in Dec 2020. I think Louis wanted to do something to keep the tour fresh and alive (because nothing looked good at that point), and the LFL concert might have been an audition for BMG. It proved that Louis could draw a huge, international, paying audience, and that on his own (without Sony), Louis still had access to professionals with very high standards. In fact, the technicians responsible for LFL are still the same crew that travels with Louis on tour. BMG were impressed.
VEEPS, which aired LFL, is still supportive of Louis. Even though VEEPS has been sold to Live Nation, its former directors, the Madden brothers, are still onboard with promoting Louis. They now own Alt Press, which put Louis on its cover to promote FITF, and did a favorable review of his concert.
After Louis signed with BMG, his music videos and promo shots were done with BMG-affiliated directors and photographers (Edward Cooke etc.). Charlie Lightening is still a friend and still around, but remember that Sony initially contacted Charlie for We Made It mv.

Here a portrait of Florence Austral, from 1929.
One of the world’s great Wagnerian sopranos was born Florence Mary Wilson in the humble Melbourne suburb of Richmond on 16 April 1892. From 1903, when her mother remarried, she took the name Florence Fawaz. After some basic voice training she won several prizes in the 1913 Ballarat South Street competitions and was accepted as a pupil of the respected Elise Wiedermann, first at Fritz Hart’s Albert Street Conservatorium, and later at the University of Melbourne Conservatorium. By 1919 she was ready to undertake further studies in New York, but not before she had been engaged by J.C. Williamson Filmsto sing between silent movie presentations at the Paramount Theatre in Bourke Street. Her associate artist was New Zealand born flautist John Amadio.
New York proved professionally disappointing, so the young soprano tried her luck among the many Australian singers in London. There, in September 1920, she made her professional debut singing at a fashionable restaurant. Adopting the stage name ‘Florence Austral’ in tribute to her homeland, she made her operatic debut as Brünnhilde in Wagner’s Die Walküre with the British National Opera Company at Covent Garden on 16 May 1922. Later in the season she also sang Brünnhilde in Siegfried and Götterdämmerung. She made the first of her many recordings in September, and then toured Britain with the BNOC, singing the Wagner repertoire and the title role in Aida. She sang in concerts and continued her studies at the London School of Opera.
Parts of her performance in Siegfried at Covent Garden on 11 January 1923, conducted by Eugene Goossens, were broadcast ‘live’ by the BBC. On 20 January she shared the stage with Melba in a gala finale to the BNOC’s season and in June she sang Tristan and Isolde for the first time.
In 1925 Austral sang in the United States, but her auditions for the Metropolitan Opera were unsuccessful, probably because of her increasing weight. She returned to London, where she and John Amadio married. During their honeymoon in the USA, Austral made her New York debut at Carnegie Hall on 2 January 1926.
She visited America again in 1927, 1928 and 1929, singing in concert and in Aida, Die Walküre and Götterdämmerung with the Philadelphia Civic Opera Company. She joined tenor Richard Crooks in an all-Wagner concert at the Metropolitan Opera House on 27 January 1929. Back in London she sang another Walküre at Covent Garden. In 1930 she and Amadio made a triumphant ‘homecoming’ concert tour of Australia under the management of E.J. Carroll. That year she also toured South Africa, sang Wagner with the Städtische Opera in Berlin – an engagement that was curtailed because of her imperfect German – and commenced another American tour. In 1932 she sang in the Netherlands and returned to Covent Garden in Tristan and Isolde. In New York in January 1933 she was one of 1,800 performers in a bizarre presentation of Beethoven’s Choral Symphony in the vastness of Madison Square Garden.
In 1934 Austral and Amadio returned to Australia for a concert tour under the direction of a budding local entrepreneur, A.D.M. ‘Archy’ Longden. His advance manager, Madeleine Clarke, was said to be ‘the only female concert manager operating in the Commonwealth’. The beautifully designed and printed souvenir programmes were available with a range of coloured covers to harmonise with lady patrons’ gowns, and were bound with transparent glassine wrappers ‘to prevent any damage to white evening gloves.’
Austral, Amadio and their pianist, Raymond Lambert, attracted publicity wherever they went. Unfortunately their visit to Albury coincided with the grisly discovery of the mutilated corpse of a young woman. This was the start of the notorious ‘Pyjama Girl’ mystery, and flights of fancy tried to link the Austral party to the crime, even suggesting that Longden or Lambert may have been the murderer.
Austral then took her place as the star of Sir Benjamin Fuller’s noblest venture, his Royal Grand Opera Company, which was designed to complement the excitement generated by Melbourne’s centenary. The company debuted at the refurbished Apollo Theatre in Bourke Street on 29 September 1934 with Austral in the title role of Aida – her first appearance in opera in her homeland. Over the next months, in Sydney and Melbourne, she sang in Walküre, Tristan and Isolde and, for the first time, Tosca, The Flying Dutchman and The Pearl Fishers (its Australian premiere). Austral later undertook a series of recitals and opera broadcasts for the ABC. In 1936-37 she made her final United States tour.
Austral returned to Britain, but the musical landscape had altered: broadcasting had eroded concert audiences, and other dramatic sopranos had usurped her place at Covent Garden. Her voice had also lost much of its lustre and her technique had started to deteriorate. In 1938 she sang in Walküre and Cavalleria Rusticana for Sadler’s Wells and Il Trovatore and Der Freischutz for the Dublin Operatic Society at the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin. She sang Lohengrin there in 1939; it was her last appearance in opera. British concert engagements dwindled alarmingly; in 1945 she and Amadio returned to Australia.
When Austral sang at the 1946 Carols by Candlelight concert in Melbourne, her performance revealed the sorry state of her voice. She did not sing in public again. She taught at the University of Melbourne and helped with Gertrude Johnson’s 1948 National Theatre Opera seasons. In 1952 she accepted Eugene Goossens’ offer of a position at the new Newcastle Conservatorium. She resigned in 1959 and taught privately for a while, but by then she was in straightened circumstances and suffering from multiple sclerosis. Friends such as actor Max Oldaker rallied round and EMI reissued some of her greatest recordings. She died in virtual obscurity on 15 May 1968. Her husband, from whom she was estranged, had died in 1964 during rehearsals for a Melbourne concert.
The Newcastle Conservatorium has awarded an annual Florence Austral Memorial Scholarship since 1970.

(Forgotten 2014 Post) - The Year of Steve Ardo
At the lowest point of my life I had made the decision to live on and fight for a brighter future. I didn’t have a set plan of attack, the only goal I had in mind was to survive the rest of 2013. As 2014 ends, I’m looking back on how everything has changed in just one short year.
In early 2013 I had began drawing up flyers for punk shows in the area. While I made 11 flyers across that span of year, I only attended maybe about 3 shows in total. I resolved to change that, starting on January 4th in which I became acquainted with 2 more local punk bands: Accidentals and On The Cinder. They were ecstatic that they met the guy who drew up the flyer and promises were made to talk later about artwork. I also introduced myself to The Howl, a four-piece touring from Chicago in which I bonded over printmaking with a the lead vocalist and guitarist Sam. Witnessing first-hand how much these bands appreciated my work gave me a special kind of warm feeling deep inside; this is where I belonged. In time I met more musicians and bands that welcomed me with open arms and became another family to me.
Tumblr media
I made strides in the art community as well. As of December 31st, 2014 I still haven’t had an exhibition of my own, but I’ve created numerous friendships and connections with other artists throughout the city including some well-known ones. Established artists were going out of their way to introduce me to other resources. For the first time in my life I was getting recognition for my work and people knew my name.
I started to date again. I was still grieving James’s departure, but I wanted to at least meet new people and see what might transpire. I wound up meeting a med student from my alma mater over a few drinks. Kris was a transplant from NYC who grew up in the same small West Virginian town as one of my uncles. We hit it off right away. After a week of going on dates, we made our relationship official. He was 5 years my senior, but without even putting any real effort into it we fit together perfectly. The relationship lasted the entirety of March until the beginning of April before an old flame of his came into the picture and eventually ousted me from my boyfriend throne. It was devastating to me as once again I was just experiencing happiness with someone and things suddenly fell apart.
Spring wasn’t setback-free by any means. In the same month that Kris left me I also was let go of my full-time screen-printing job and once again someone very important was taken away from me forever. Seriously, fuck April. I was still homeless and the financial burdens of massive student loan debt bared down on me with every month’s end. Sometimes life happens like that, and even though I had no control over the circumstances I still endured them at point-blank range with full knowledge that I was no longer as weak as I once was.
Summer was fast approaching and I began networking within Buffalo’s LGBT community. Almost every month the Pride Center of WNY organizes a mixer for working LGBT professionals to meet-up and connect with others. I was out of a job and had no idea where to even begin looking, so I didn’t think it could hurt. While frequenting them I started to meet new friends and share stories of the DIY community I was now deeply a part of. At one such mixer I wound up hitting it off with a guy (confession: he happened to look like a lot like James, that’s why I approached him), and while he was already partnered he told me of a friend of theirs that was looking for a roommate. I had made new friends and finally escaped my indefinite homelessness.
The hot summer days also provided endless events that kept me busy. Every weekend was full of shows and festivals and it seemed like I was constantly on the go. Hell, I even had the chance to participate in a few and get some free press. Softball started up again and even if I was carrying a heavy heart missing a certain someone I still went to support my friends in the LGBT league. Before I knew it autumn had arrived and with softball now over I started joining a small group for karaoke every Tuesday night at Q on Allen. A new friend I had made earlier in the summer (1 of 2 Steves I became close with) donated an unused bike of his so now I had a lot more freedom to go places in the city. This would be a huge help as my car broke down right before Halloween.
I threw my hat into the dating ring again; for the period of about 3 weeks I went on 2-3 dates a week with different guys just to play the field. I soon realized that I wasn’t quite ready to date again; the majority of my past relationships were really emotionally intense, and I wasn’t quite okay with being single yet. Andrew and Tim were gone, I still had feelings for Kris, and I missed James (or maybe it was what might’ve been with James). Now I’ve finally accepted being single so getting to know guys and seeing where things progress doesn’t scare me as much. I’m still petrified of falling in love again, but someday that fear will subside and I will find someone to share the rest of my life with.
There was a bit of a minor shakeup in my life regarding the non-profit organization I’ve volunteered at for almost 3 years now. I’m currently on a break from there and using this time as a means of focusing on my own major projects. If I choose to return I know that I will be welcomed back without issue. After New Year’s I plan on making my official decision.
It’s a surreal feeling when I take a look back at everything that’s happened in 2014. Last year I was forcing myself to live until midnight just so that I could say that I survived a year of hell after a very close attempt at suicide. I’ve made some very amazing friends and have met and worked with some awesome musicians. On The Cinder, Accidentals, Hang Bob Ewell, B-Side Basterds, The Cran Tangerines, Seven Thirty Seven, Angstea, Battleship Crunch, Grain Assault, Creation Order Xtinction, Ballzy, Loudmouse, Everett Lonesome’s Nightmare, Robin and the Hoods, The Crack Horse... there’s too many wonderful and talented friends to list and I had the honor of becoming an artist/designer in the Aluminum Records family. The Northrup House, The Flower House, Hoyt and others have become more than the scenes of basement shows; they’ve become communities of individuals working together for something bigger. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting touring bands like The Howl, Samuel Powers, and Oh The Humanity! and even forming friendships with some of their members. I’m now part of a community where I’m putting my heart and soul into keeping the DIY spirit alive working side-by-side with others who share the same beliefs through art and music.
Last year I would never have believed that life would take me down this road, but then again last year I was not the same person I am today. Even now I couldn’t tell you what happened or why things changed. Dumb luck? Did “fate” decide to give me a goddamn break for once? All I know is that I resolved to never give up, no matter what.
