I'm not gonna go on another dog training tangent except I absolutely am because truly!!! I think it's SO worth it to approach training with like.. a mindset that prioritizes the dog's comfort over achieving certain desirable behaviors. Because ultimately, a dog that is comfortable, confident, and that has a strong basis of communication with you IS going to be a well-behaved dog. And it takes a LOT of time and patience and it can be frustrating but its worth it!!
#an adversive method might get you faster results#but idk!! for me training is about bonding. its about learning to understand and communicate with my dog#you dont exactly get that kind of bonding with adversive methods#its not even wholly that it can be painful and all for a dog- its that so many adversive methods are just.. unclear and confusing for a dog#its a lot harder for them to understand what a tug from a prong collar means and their response to it / what they learn from it can be#unpredictable#yknow???#you can use a prong collar to stop them from tugging. and they might learn to associate tugging = discomfort. but they also might start to#associate walks = discomfort. or that dog thats always across the street = discomfort. and if dogs = discomfort#then youve got a dog potentially primed to feel anxious or fearful around other dogs. and then youve got a whole slew of new problems#for me training is about understanding your dog. how they feel. how *they* learn and what cues they pick up on best#i think training is supposed to be fun!! and its not fun if im tugging at my dog's collar or punishing him#anyway. sorry i try to be impartial about some adverse methods because its just so common but honestly I don't like them at all
