Hello! It's been a bit since I've posted here, but I feel like that's mainly because I've been working on development a lot and haven't taken a moment to share how that's been going!

Liquid core sets are almost here!

It's a bit of a long post, so I added a cut.

You read that right! The liquid core sets are almost ready to launch! This is true for both the shaped and round shell types!

(All of the dice shown are in various states of being finished which is why they don't have painted numbers and may have some matte faces or mold marks)

Here we have some examples of both shell types! The matching red d6 and d20 are the shaped variety, and the rest are the round type. Some examples of how they look in a set...

(These are both missing a percentile because I had to make a second d10 shell mold for both and I got impatient and wanted to test them first)

Now you may see the d4s and think they look kinda funny. They do, which is why they're off to the printer for round 3 of prototypes sometime this week. It's a bit hard to tell for the darker set, but the shell is still *just* too small so that has been adjusted. Also the tiny orb in the center of the rounded version ends up slightly off center for the same reason, and the orb itself should turn out to be about 50% larger so it's not so.. awkward. The new size should hopefully fit better and also be easier to fill. The current ones are stubborn.

Also, while those are getting reprinted, a new d4 shape (a crystal shard - I've teased it here before) is also being printed, as well as its accompanying shells and blank!

The shells have improved a lot from the first attempt, which ended up oddly textured and kinda blurred on the inside. They were also awkwardly thick in the first run. The following two dice were made in the same mold, with the silver one actually being made first. The outside surface is the same, but the inside is definitely not.

The new shells aren't perfectly smooth on the inside (and definitely not on the outside, but that gets coated in more resin so that texture disappears). The newer ones have the finish that reminds me of how the glass in stained glass tends to look, which is a neat effect.

Since the shells are made of resin, I can make them any color or effect I want! The seams on these are fairly obvious at this stage, but they've been sealed with epoxy resin as opposed to UV resin, which so far has proven to hide the seams better in the end. I'm still practicing that part with the resin, but I made some silicone guides to help make sure they're aligned properly.

I can also insert things like glitters or clay fruit slices in the shells!

So these are nearing the end of the development stage and I'm tentatively preparing for them to be launched in February, which is wild to me because it would be almost exactly 2 years after I first started making sets, which were nowhere near as nice as they've become now.

Mimaki showcases CJV330 eco-solvent printer

Mimaki exhibited the CJV330, which is one of the latest models in its eco-solvent printing series, at the Media Expo in Greater Noida. It also showcased three 100 series models – the JV100, UJV100, and TS100 inkjet printers at the recent in-person Media Expo New Delhi 2022. The JV100 uses eco-solvent inks, the UJV100 uses UV cured inks and the TS100 is a dye-sublimation model using transfer papers.

Also displayed was the Mimaki UJF-6042MkIIe flatbed UV printer. Mimaki displayed a laser cutting system to show the combination of UV curing, printing, and laser cutting as a core set or combination of tools to cover multiple applications or end products. Kenichiro (Ken) Seki, managing director, Mimaki said, “There are many, many laser cutter users in the market, but what the laser cannot do is to make color, which we can add color by using the UJF. This combination adds value to the laser cutting machine users.”

Expanding the market by stretching in both directions

“The market itself is of bigger volume in the lower-end segments. In the high-end section, customers require very high-speed printing. Mimaki usually caters to the middle segment, which is not so expensive and doesn’t require super high printing and image quality. Now we are going to target the high-end segment as well in India. We haven’t started yet but in Japan, we now have the JFX600, which is our high-end model for UV flatbed printing. Eventually, we want to introduce that kind of high-end machine in India so that we can target those higher-end customers and at the same time, use the 100 series machines to target the low-end customers as well. I am not thinking that we can take all those customers but we want to maybe stretch to reach those lower-end customers as well because they are dominated by Chinese or local Indian companies. We will have to expand our market volume so we have both the high-end and low-end customers,” he added.

3D printing with full color

Mimaki had earlier launched the 3DUJ-553 color 3D printer, enabling the full-color modeling of over 10 million colors. About the printer, Seki said, “The machine is already in the market but we haven’t started selling it in India yet. We have to be ready because 3D printing is a totally different mindset and technology. We have to learn a lot more and maybe hire someone, especially for this segment. We still don’t know about the market size of 3D printing. India itself is a big country, so eventually, we will start but we haven’t finalized when.”

About the Media Expo New Delhi 2022 in Greater Noida, he said, “The location is far from Delhi and that’s also a good thing because only genuine customers are visiting. And that’s why we are receiving quite a good number of quality leads. Overall, I think it’s a very good event.”

Signing off, Seki added, “We will announce new applications and new models soon so keep an eye on that.”

To start off, the T72B. At the time of writing, the T72B was one of the newer units added to Team Yankee for the Warsaw Pact. The unit is one of Poland’s better units, or so I am told. Basically it has survivability which compliment’s the elite stats the Polish have in game. During List tailoring, I was debating whether to include this unit along side some T55s. After talking with some players, I decided to just take the T72B. Hopefully they will work well with my Motorized troops. Now to the technical stuff. For starters, you may have noticed some Milliput on the vehicles. This was done to hide some imperfections caused during the printing process. For those that don’t know, Resin 3D printes use a UV light source cure the resin layer by layer. The upside of this is it means you can produce a large number of models at the same time. In FDM printing (or filament printing) the more you print on the build plate, the longer it will take to print. With this in mind, you may be wondering why resin printers aren’t as common. The reason is the Resin printers are limited in size and cost. The build area of my Voxelabs Polaris is about the size of a smart phone. Similar priced FDM printers have way more space to build. There are other things that make FDM printers better, but that’s a story for another day. Now, the UV light source. Over time that light source will start to gain dead pixels and other failures. Remember, the resin needs to be exposed to UV light. No UVs, no cured resin, print failures abound. In the case of the tanks, two of the models had pin holes. The third was dropped and gained some chip damaged. Covered them with Milliput, paint them like camo (and the Polish Flag), and say the unit are veterans that captured some camo tarps from the enemy. Its clumsy, but it works. One other little thing is sanding. Due to my settings, I might be overexposing the models. Overexposure can cause prints to be slightly bigger than they are supposed to be. There are other factors like what resin you are using. Yeah, resin printing is a science. Anyway. The turrets and machineguns had to be sanded down to better fit in the vehicles. Had some machineguns break being forced into their holes. For paint, got a rattle can of Paprika, Heirloom white, and green camo. The idea was to incorporate red into the camo. Lore wise, the Unit is slowly getting tired of the Soviets, and are hiding the Polish flag in the camo. If the Commissars ask, the red is meant to communism. More or less an excuse to have Warsaw pact fight Warsaw pact. So lessons learned. First, calibrate printer. Print fails might be because printer is not calibrate. Second, check the UV source. Fails might be because the source is going bad. Finally, Milliput is useful, but there are easier alternatives Next up, will be printing some OT-64 transports. Yay! For models
