I truly wish I could find a warm, loving home for this beautiful and sweet girl. She doesn't deserve to be outside during this cold winter. She is either a stray or feral (if feral, she has become socialized already by me). She is a bit aggressive towards unknown animals (cats & my dog when they got outside), but gets along fine with other stray/feral cats, so I feel she might acclimate if housed in a kennel or isolated room for a little bit before introduced to other animals. A home with no animals would be ideal. I will not give her to a random person, but someone I feel will give her a loving home and take care of her. I would keep her myself in a heartbeat if I didn't already have 4 cats and a dog. If you know of anyone interested in giving this loving soul a warm place to sleep at night, please contact me. Well tomorrow is our home visit! Hopefully one of these beautiful babies will be ours! Princess(left) and Zara(right) are 12 week old kittens from the Jackson County Humane Society in Ohio. They are currently being fostered, with their brother Oz, by an amazing volunteer. They are 12 week old bundles of joy and we cannot wait to give one of these beauties their forever home! -Farret

John Wesley Powell was born in 1834 and moved to Jackson in 1838 from New York. Powell's family was politically liberal and he was bullied by his peers because of it. The Powells decided that it was best to get a private tutor for John and found one in John Crookham. Crookham was a salt boiler, educator, geologist, local historian, and abolitionist. One of Crookham's primary interests was the discovery of the regions pre-settlement history. To that end he collected Native American and pre-historic artifacts and wrote a book on the history of the region. Many of the artifacts that Crookham collected were lost in a fire when a group of local Jacksonians (many of the people of Jackson were originally from Virginia) burned Crookham's home for his abolitionism. Crookham's tutelage of the young John Wesley Powell was what inspired his interest in geology although his family left Jackson in 1846. After the out break of the Civil War John joined the Union army and held the rank of Lieutenant in the 20th Illinois Infantry. In 1862 he fought along with Generals Grant and Sherman at the battle of Shiloh where he lost his right arm. In 1869 he led a 9 man expedition on the first full length exploration of the Colorado River, including exploration of the Grand Canyon. In 1871 Powell led another expedition that again led him to the Grand Canyon. Powell was a professor of geology at Illinois Wesleyan University and helped to found the U.S. Geological Survey and was the organizations director from 1881 to 1894. #johnwesleypowellmuseum #jacksonohio #memorialinscription (at Jackson, Ohio)
