The last weekend of SRO Motorsports America racing in 2024 receives a huge boost in star power as world-renowned actor Keanu Reeves will compete in this weekend’s Toyota Gazoo Racing GR Cup North America finale – his first motor race in over 14 years.
Reeves will drive the #92 Eagles Canyon Racing by Fast Track Toyota GR86 in a pair of sprint races on Saturday and Sunday, 5/6 October. The car will feature a red and black livery promoting his graphic novel, BRZRKR.

The Canadian actor is an avid enthusiast of motorsport. Reeves was the presenter of the four-part documentary Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story and has been a guest of honour in the paddocks of F1, MotoGP, and IndyCar throughout the years.
Reeves drove in the 2009 and 2010 editions of the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race at Long Beach, winning the Celebrity class in 2009 and receiving a promotion to the Pro category the following year. That was the last time Reeves has run in an organised motor race.
Since then, Reeves has gone on to star in the John Wick series of action films, reprised his role as Neo in The Matrix Resurrections, and published the first chapter of BRZRKR in 2021 alongside co-writer Matt Kindt and illustrator Ron Garney.
Reeves is one of two celebrity drivers competing at Indianapolis this weekend, part of a 34-car field.
Eagles Canyon and Fast Track’s other celebrity driver is Cody Jones from the action sports and entertainment troupe Dude Perfect, which has over 60 million subscribers on YouTube.

Nicknamed “Tall Man”, the 6’6 Jones’ sanctioned racing debut in the #29 GR86 was the prize for winning a go-kart racing challenge at this year’s Formula One Australian Grand Prix against three of his fellow troupe members.
Reeves and Jones will be pitted against a strong field of drivers young and old, including the newly-crowned GR Cup North America Champion Gresham Wagner.
Wagner, the driver of the #5 Copeland Motorsports GR86, clinched the series championship last round at Barber Motorsports Park. At the Brickyard, Wagner will look to add to his eight wins on the season – before heading to Road Atlanta to try and win the Mazda MX-5 Cup championship.
Second place in the championship is still up for grabs between Wagner’s team-mate, Westin Workman (another driver running dual GR Cup/MX-5 Cup campaigns) and Spike Kohlbecker of TechSport Racing. Workman enters the final weekend of the season six points ahead of Kohlbecker.
Jaxon Bell, the son of 2015 IMSA GTD Champion and 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours winner Townsend Bell, is fourth in the championship.

Another guest driver of note is Miki Koyama from Japan, driving the #75 Hattori Motorsports GR86 in partnership with Japan’s all-female KYOJO Cup Series.
Koyama, the inaugural KYOJO Cup champion in 2017 and 2018, became the first woman to win the FIA Formula Regional Japanese Championship title in 2022 – and last week, driving a Lexus RC F GT3, she became the first woman to take overall victory in a Super Taikyu Series race since 1993.
Koyama is one of four women in the field, joining Mia Lovell, Jade Avedisian, and Maddie Aust. Lovell is the series’ top female driver (10th in overall points and the top-ranked woman in nine out of 12 races) – and Avedisian, a Toyota-backed prospect of the open-wheel oval circuit, finished second in last weekend’s BC39 sprint car race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway dirt track.

Season previews: Essendon (12th)
Last season: 11th (11 wins, 12 losses, 89.7%) Notable ins: Ben McKay (North Melbourne), Xavier Duursma (Port Adelaide), Jade Gresham (St Kilda) Notable outs: Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (Port Adelaide), Andrew Phillips (retired), Massimo D'Ambrosio (Hawthorn)
11 June, 2023. Essendon have just beaten - no - embarrassed Carlton in a King's Birthday Eve blockbuster in front of 83,000 fans and set against the backdrop of a premiership reunion for the famous 1993 "Baby Bombers." The 34-point margin does do not justice to the way Essendon monstered the Blues. Carlton were out-pressured, out-worked and out-classed, kicking just six goals and laying only 34 tackles. Michael Voss is under extraordinary pressure and looks at long odds to keep his job as Blues fans bay for blood. Essendon on the other hand head into the bye sitting in sixth position on the ladder and rising on the back of four consecutive wins. A top-eight finish seems likely, perhaps at last that elusive finals win and maybe even more.

Jump foward eight months to now and this feels like a dispatch from an alternate universe. It was Carlton that played in and won two finals. Michael Voss is out of the hot seat and has secured a two-year contract extension. And it is Essendon that entered another off-season searching for answers on what went so wrong. From that night in June they yo-yoed around, alternating between poor performances against sides they should have been roughly equal to, brave efforts in honourable losses and precisely one win. Despite their collapse, the Bombers were somehow still in the finals hunt with four games left. Alarm bells were ringing when they were lucky to beat the two bottom sides, both of whom had gone so long without winning they forgot how to ice games they could have won. Yet Essendon’s season remained alive heading into a round 23 clash with GWS, also fighting for their life and one spot below the Bombers on the ladder. The eight beckons for the winner, lights out for the loser.
GWS beat Essendon by 126 points that day and went on to finish the regular season four spots and 17.4 percentage points higher than the Bombers, ultimately falling one point short of a Grand Final appearance. The football world fell in love with how Adam Kingsley came in to the Giants and quickly instilled a winning mentality, playing with both joy and a hard steely edge. Kingsley’s family would right now be grieving an untimely death due to stress ball poisoning if he had landed at Essendon instead. The Bombers capitulated the next week and only kicked three goals against Collingwood, spared a defeat greater than the 70-point loss they did cop because the Magpies put the cue in the rack at half-time. They had bigger fish to fry than these pretenders.
There is no shortage of pundits that expect this to be the year the Bombers pull it together and climb up the ladder, as there are every year. Their reasonings range from sound logic (Brad Scott is at worst a very competent coach and there is talent on this list) to blind optimism (Essendon is a big Victorian club and the competition is at its best when they are all playing well and Jake Stringer is in a contract year). The alternate view is that the best indicator of future performance is past performance. On that measure for more than a decade, at least since they were humbled by the drugs saga and in truth for some time before that, Essendon have underperformed and thus will most likely continue to do so. Since the league expanded in 2011, only Gold Coast, Carlton, North Melbourne and St Kilda have won less games and only the Suns have won the same number of finals (zero).
There is little value in running the rule over Essendon’s off-season recruits, their likely best 22, their first five games of the season or their run home. When the chips are down, Scott will have no recent history to point to of this side doing the hard thing and fighting against the odds. You will find many who concoct again a reason for that to change in 2024. They would be better served by recalling the definition of insanity.
Sunny days are ahead but not just yet, next up is Gold Coast...

Saint Departures 2023
After suffering a bitter loss against the GWS Giants in the 2nd elimination final of the 2023 season, Stkilda's season was officially over. This brings us to a bitter time of the year as external pressures mount on us to change our list, update our list and perform better in the upcoming 2024 season.
Stkilda will make the difficult decision to not offer 5 players contracts for the upcoming year.
Here is our list of delisted players after the 2023 AFL Premiership season:
Jack Bytel
youtube
Jack was selected with pick 41 in the 2018 AFL draft, and played 22 senior games. Jack spent 5 years on our list and suffered significant back issues that kept him sidelined and rehabbing for most of his career. We wish Jack the very best in these tough times and hope he continues with his football.
Leo Connoly
youtube
Leo was drafted 64th overall in the 2021 AFL draft and managed 7 games, and 1 goal with us. Leo made his debut in 2020 which was at the MCG against Richmond, in what was a covid-interrupted season. Leo was a vauled teamate at the club and we hope he still has a future in football as he is only 22 years of age.
Jack Peris
youtube
Jack was selected as a category B rookie through our Next Generation Academy. Peris debuted this season against Gold Coast and unfortunately that was the only game he played for us. Jack is only 19 and his future is very much still in front of him, and we wish him the very best.
Oscar Adams

Oscar, originally from Mount Gambier, was recruited by the Saints via SANFL club Glenelg with pick No.51 in last November's national draft. Oscar faced minor off field setbacks and was unable to debut in his tenure with us. We wish Oscar the best for his future and he has the full support of our club.
Tom Highmore
youtube
Tom was drafted at pick number #45 in the 2020 AFL draft. Tom played 16 games in his career as a key position defender/halfback. He averaged 22.6 disposals in his first six games but has fallen out of favour as of late and will not have his contract renewed for season 2024. We wish Tom the absolute best for his future.
Trade period list departures
Also departing us through the trade period are Nick Coffield, Jack Billings and Jade Gresham. We wish for a quick transitional period for our traded saints and hope they feel welcome and loved at their new homes. This trio will be especially missed as their valuable contributions to the club go above and beyond the playing field. This trio boasts a sum of 342 games experience that we have all enjoyed watching. Big thanks to Nick, Jack and Jade, we will miss you.
The trade period also see us lose picks 35, 56, a future second round pick, and a future fourth round pick.
In turn we recieve Carlton midfielder Paddy Dow, Freo young-gun Liam Henry, picks 21, 41, and two future third round picks.
Here is our list manager Stephen Silvagni talking about the trade period:
instagram
Once a saint always a saint, all past players are welcome at our club at anytime. We are committed to march on to premiership glory and we understand what it takes to get there. We will continually assess and manage our list, and recruit accordingly to what we need to win games.

Women and Oregon breweries, a post-1984 list.
When I heard there was no list of women who owned or co-owned breweries in Oregon I knew I had to make it right.

I pulled together a list of women listed as owners (and a handful of brewers) using the information in Oregon Brew Tour (2011), Oregon Breweries (2014), on Jeff Alworth’s blog, the breweries identified on the Oregon Brewers Guild site, and a Google Maps search combined with the info in the Oregon State Business Registry Database.
Note: Some of the women included in this post include women who are listed as owners / co-owners in the forms filed and uploaded to the State Business Registry Database. I’m not sure how involved they are in day-to-day operations.
I'll be filling in gaps as I do more research, but email me at [email protected] to add names and make my job easier!
Note: people leave jobs and businesses close, and I have not noted that here. This is more a tally of “all time” rather than a current list.
June 10, 2021: I had what felt like a brilliant, though tedious, idea to search the State Business Registry Database for “brew*” (wildcard at the end of that search word because librarians roll like that), but after spending way too much time opening a lot of business records looking for female owner / co-owners I scrolled to the bottom to see how large my task was, only to find that the site would only display the first 1000 names. It stopped at Heater Allen. 🙄I’ve added what I found here, but note that some may have been registered and never opened.
I’ve done many, many, many interviews with women related to brewing in Oregon (many brewers who could be added to this list). You can find those on the guide to OHBA collections.

OCTOBER 15, 2021 UPDATE:
I got a question that asked: “Do you have a sense of what overall percentage that reflects?” The short version of the long answer is that it’s really hard to find out.
Learn more about how to research the industry on the Beer Research Guide.
What’s below still gives some data edges.
TOTALS: According to the Brewers Association:
In 2020, there were 312 breweries in Oregon
In 2019, there were 311 breweries
In 2017, there were 266 breweries
In 2015, there were 215 breweries
In 2013, there were 181 breweries
In 2011, there were 124 breweries
According to portlandbeer.org (a now defunct new blog), in 2007, there were 64 brewing companies operating 90 brewing facilities (so lots of McMenamins and other breweries with multiple locations).
CLOSURES
In 2020, 21 breweries / taprooms closed (New School Beer)
In 2019, 18 closed (New School Beer)
In 2017, 24 opened (Portland Business Journal) and 10 closed (New School Beer)
And it seems there was an average of 7-ish closing each year before that (Register Guard)
Another list that includes numbers on closures (ratebeer.com).
I have found state guidebooks (which are immediately out of date, so immediately “historical” useful in this search. They are listed on the Oregon Hops and Brewing Archives guide.

Hi! I would like to announce that my friend Jade (@coconutGrandma) and I are creating a webcomic!
The title is ‘The death of illusions’ and it’s a crime mystery comic set in 1880s New York!
The comic follows three main characters, Rueben Gresham a detective, Montgomery Rutledge an oil Tycoon, and Francis Colquitt a socialite, as they discover a series of high society murders.
If any of this sounds interesting to you, please go give the-death-of-illusions a follow for updates and such!
Can’t wait to see you there!!!

Season previews: St Kilda (13th)
Last season: 6th (13 wins, 10 losses, 107.8%), 8th after finals Notable ins: Liam Henry (Fremantle), Paddy Dow (Carlton), Riley Bonner (pre-season draft) Notable outs: Jade Gresham (Essendon), Jack Billings (Melbourne), Nick Coffield (Western Bulldogs)
At first glance, Ross Lyon's return to St Kilda could hardly have gone better. Off the back of a 5-1 start (their only loss coming by a goal to the eventual premiers), the Saints returned to the finals after years in the footy wilderness. Following his brief time in the media, Lyon is no longer miserable and dour but has been rebranded as a funnier, cuddlier version of 'Ross the Boss'. A posse of old favourites in Brendon Goddard, Robert Harvey and Lenny Hayes surround the coach and the Saints are relevant again for the first time really since his initial stint ended over a decade ago. They proved the doubters wrong last season and the general consensus now seems to say that St Kilda will finish in the top eight again and aim to go one better by winning a final in 2024.

Fuelling that belief is an impressive crop of youngsters whose progression the Saints will be hoping drive them forward. There is Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera and Marcus Windhager off half-back, Matteas Phillipou and Mitch Owens in the forward line, and they are now joined by Henry on a wing. As for more established players, Callum Wilkie and Jack Sinclair won All-Australian selection leading a solid back six that will benefit from another pre-season learning Lyon's defensive philosophies together. Rowan Marshall was unlucky to miss out on a blazer of his own, arguably the premier ruckman of the competion at stages. Max King would be aiming to shake off a year impacted by shoulder injury (he still managed 28 goals from 11 games) and finally unleash his full potential after only hovering around the tip of the supposed iceberg so far. Jack Steele played 21 games but appeared to be labouring from injury at times and will look to return to his damaging best.
The counter-narrative to all that rosy optimism can be found by drilling a little deeper into St Kilda's last season, specifically after that barnstorming start. There was a feeling as the year wore on that rather than being firmly ensconced in the eight, the Saints were barely hanging on to their spot. In those 18 games, their record went eight wins and ten losses with just two of those victories coming against fellow finallists. For fans hoping 'Ross 2.0' would embrace a higher-scoring brand of football, bad news: only five times did the Saints post a better score than the 2023 league average of 83 points per game. In fact at season's end, St Kilda had outscored three teams (Hawthorn, North Melbourne and West Coast). Lyon's staple, the stingy defence, was however back at Moorabin to combat this and none was stingier than theirs.
It may well be that Lyon did look to find more goals in his return to the Saints but has lacked the personnel and capability on-field to do so. Attacking entries were frequently uninspired and rarely to the advantage of their forwards, who ranked dead-last in the competition for scoring from inside 50s. St Kilda's centre rotation led by Steele, Brad Crouch and Seb Ross are all dependable ball-winners but lack class and quality disposal. They don't grow on trees but the Saints missed a trick not using the free agency and trade period to find a player or two that can spread from the contest and deliver the ball to King and company with more creativity. Henry operates further on the outside and Dow struggled for opportunity and was ultimately unwanted at Carlton for a reason.
Expect year two under 'Ross' to come with more pain than his first season back in charge. There are deficiencies on the list and when the defence gets picked apart as it was by GWS in the elimination final, the forward line will struggle to counter-punch. Lyon will be content to play the long game, establishing the side's identity for now and look to plug any gaping holes in a future off-season. That is a comfort that comes with being a Messiah-figure contracted for three more years who has, after the return of his disciples and the ousting of Simon Lethlean as CEO, few voices at the club to tell him otherwise.
Expect more of the same from the red and black, next up is Essendon...

A Season of Hope
No St Kilda fan needs a lesson on disappointment. 56 years without a flag is a heck of a long time and sometimes it seems that the ‘you can’t swim at St Kilda because they only have one flag’ jokes will be around until the end of humanity.
An eight year span from 2004 to 2011, represents a very strong era in St Kilda folklore. An average ladder finish of 4th, making Preliminary Finals in 04, 05 and 08, whilst losing Grand Finals in 09 and 2010.
Apart from the flag in ‘66, the St Kilda team that went through Grant Thomas and Ross Lyon was perhaps the strongest St Kilda squad that has ever graced this earth.
This can make it even harder to swallow that this elusive second flag hasn’t been won yet. If that star-studded St Kilda team couldn’t get it done, maybe that’s the closest they will ever get.
St Kilda fans need fear not as the competition was much stronger than as it is now and a new era of talent is emerging.
The likes of Lenny Hayes, Nick Dal Santo, Brendon Goddard and Nick Riewoldt have been replaced by Jack Steele, Jack Sinclair, Jade Gresham and Max King.
Max King’s career progression is almost identical to that of Nick Riewoldt’s so far; first season a write off due to injury, a little over a goal a game the next year, then a significant increase. Nick Riewoldt also had the wobbles infront of goals at times. If King can fix that, then perhaps he could deliver St Kilda their next flag.
King celebrates after crucial goal against Richmond in April
A strong core and some exciting youth has many licking their lips, hoping the likes of Marcus Windhager, Mitchito Owens and Nasiah Wanganeen Milera can deliver on the excitement they stirred in the hearts of Saints fans in 2022.
One of St Kilda’s biggest areas of concerns is leaking goals. Not to say their backline is weak, but the team defence is not where it should be.
Ross Lyon had St Kilda conceding the least goals of any team, with a defence first mentality.
If he is anything like he was at his first St Kilda stint and his run at Fremantle, then St Kilda fans should strap themselves in because the sky is the limit.
