Vintage Aircraft & Hot Rods Make the Scene at the 2017 Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance
You know what they say about necessity and invention, right? When the organizers of Southern California’s Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance lost their longtime seaside golf course venue a couple years ago, they regrouped and came up with a great idea: Display vintage cars alongside vintage airplanes. The perfect location was not far away: Louis Zamperini Field in Torrance, named for the native son who was the subject of the book and film Unbroken and home to the Western Museum of Flight.
Notable aircraft (some straight out of the museum) were surrounded by cars with some thematic relation to them. For example, a British Hawker Siddeley T.4 Harrier jump jet was surrounded by Jaguars and other European sports cars. A 1940s-vintage Grumman FM-2 Wildcat—built by General Motors during the war years—was surrounded by 1960s-vintage muscle cars. The sizeable Golden Era Hot Rods class, parked next to the Race Cars of Special Interest class, was accompanied by a hot rod of the sky, a Pitts Special biplane.
If you’re looking for a different kind of car show next fall, head to the Palos Verdes Concours Sept. 30, and visit pvconcours.org for more info.
The Douglas C-53 Skytrooper earned her “D-Day Doll” name by carrying paratroopers during the D-Day invasion.

Tom, seen here talking to the concours judges, has owned the roadster since he was in high school. He contended for the AMBR in 2016 after the hot rod was freshened by Pete Chapouris and Jimmy Shine at So-Cal Speed Shop.

A standout among the more conservatively styled vintage hot rods at Palos Verdes was Rod Riguez, an Olds Rocket-powered 1930 Model A that was radically customized in the early 2000s in Nagoya, Japan, by Junichi Shimodaira. After winning Best of Show, the Gene Winfield Pick, the Herb Martinez Pick, and other awards at the 2003 Hot Rod and Custom Show in Yokohama, Rod Riguez was bought by current caretakers Chuck and Jeanne Schauwecker in 2005.
Pat Ganahl brought his Caddy-powered Deuce roadster to the concours, a car that was inspired by several iconic hot rods, including the Bob McGee and Joe Nitti roadsters. He wanted it the same dark purple as the Nitti car, and spent a long, long time researching colors before finding a match—that turned out to be a factory color. What color, exactly? That’s a closely guarded secret.
The Don Zabel 1932 roadster was parked near John Bucher’s Pitts Special biplane. Don was one of the six founding members of the Trompers car club in Eagle Rock, California.
Carter Fisher brought the 1923 T roadster that won the America’s Most Beautiful Roadster trophy at the second National Roadster Show in 1951.
Augie Esposito’s Deuce roadster is powered by a flathead fitted with Harrell speed equipment—heads and intake—that was reproduced from original Harrell patterns.
Parked next to Augie’s Deuce was Jerry Mull’s Model A roadster, which has a tri-power small-block within those polished hood panels.
The flathead in Don Stout’s 1940 Deluxe coupe is fitted with Offy heads and intake.
The flathead in Buddy Pepp’s 1932 roadster is the same one the car’s original builder put in it in the mid 1950s.
Parked next to Buddy was Chuck Gage’s 1928 roadster pickup.
