Tumblr media
“jake!” the boy stumbles as you throw your arms around him, wrapping him into a tight hug. your happiness is infectious as he catches you by gently holding your waist to support you. you lean back just enough to press a sweet peck against his lips. “thank you.”
“for what?” his hands ghost your hips as you pull back just enough to hold out a letter to him. the handwriting is neatly written on light pink paper, complete with a thin origami rose attached to the back of it. you hold it out for him to take as he skims through the words.
my dearest y/n,
forgive me for being too scared to come to you directly. i hope you will accept this paper rose in place of a real one. you’re smart, and gorgeous, and incredible at everything you do. you are everything i could ever hope for in a lover.
my feelings for you are beyond words. you bring light into my life and brighten my day whenever i see you. i love your smile and how it brings one to my own face. i love your laugh and how it calms me down whenever you're near. i love your eyes and how captivating they are. i love everything about you.
i promise to send another letter soon.
until then,
- j
jake glares down at the now-crumbled note in his hands, looking back up at you. “who is this from?”
his anger disappears as you furrow your eyebrows before reaching out to take the letter back from him. “i found it in my locker. i thought it was from you,” you pause to scan through the words again. what was once sweet and loving now feels tainted. jake reaches over to grab your hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “is it not?”
“no.” he grabs the paper once again before crumbling it up and throwing it into a nearby trash can. you stifle a laugh as he does, stealing his attention away from the confession. “what?”
“are you jealous?” despite your teasing tone, jake’s face flushes immediately. he looks away as your smile grows. “you’re jealous!” you playfully gasp, wrapping your arms around him once again. your touch is a comforting distraction from the irritation that still lingers in him.
“someone else confessed to you!” he whines. “somebody has a crush on my lover! and they went through the effort of writing a letter about how they feel even though we’re very publicly dating!”
“you’re such a baby, jake,” you laugh, pressing a quick kiss against his cheek. you pull back just enough to hold his face in your hands before coaxing his head close enough that his forehead rests against yours. “i love you. you don’t need to worry about anything or anyone else. the letter means nothing to me because those words aren’t yours.”
you lean in, pulling jake into a kiss. it’s deeper than the first one; filled with all of the love and adoration you have for each other. he brings a hand up to your cheek before gently stroking his thumb against your skin. he smiles into it, mirroring your own as you pull away. jake presses another quick peck against your lips before you fully pull away. “i love you too.”
“let’s go home?”
“yeah,” jake smiles, reaching over to grab your hand. it fits in yours perfectly as you intertwine your fingers together. “let’s go home.”

Tumblr media
You watched as the clouds begin to merge with one another, the once blue skies slowly turning to grey. And yet, you stay motionless— the water beneath you keeping you afloat, and the low tide drifting you across the surface.
Drip.
Drop.
The droplets from the sky splatter against your face as it runs down your cheekbones. The raindrops grow bigger and the drizzle is frequent, causing you to close your eyes and feel the water rinse you from above. And even so, you refused to leave the pool— your daydreams filled with frustration, and your mind full of regrets.
Second place again? Don’t dream of entering nationals.
You should be used to it by now— the voices that constantly haunt your self-esteem. It has been five whole years and yet you hear the exact same words. Second place. It seems like it’s all you could ever get no matter how hard you try and how long you practice for. You hate how you could feel your tears in the corner of your eyes, though the rain masks it up. You take a deep breath as you sink yourself, the water engulfing your body a whole. You come up to catch your breath and just like magic, the rain seems to stop.
You pushed yourself off the edge of the pool as you grabbed your towel, heading to the locker rooms to rinse the chemical infused water off your body. A deep sigh leaving your lips as you swung your towel around your neck. It had been a while since the competition had ended, paying no mind to whether people were still here. It was better this way, since you didn’t want anyone to question why you were still hanging around the pool after everything ended.
Tossing your towel on the seats you head for the shower room to rinse yourself, the shower quickly warms up your body from the rain. You quickly got changed and grabbed your belongings from your locker before heading out— till the sound of chatter heightened your senses.
From the corner of your eye, you see a young male with the coach who you seemed to recognise from the male swim team. The male appears to be looking at the floor, as the coach constantly pokes his shoulder. It’s definitely not a heartwarming scene, but it’s something that you’re familiar with.
“At this rate, you won’t go to nationals.” You could hear the coach speak, and somehow it feels like he’s taking a jab at you.
“Second place! Is that all you could do?” Second place. It hits way too close to home. And you felt like if you continued to listen any longer, you would fall into the void of your thoughts once again. You pretend like you heard nothing, and quickly turned away from the pair as you left the building.
There are little to no stars above and the glow of the moon is blurred behind the fog of clouds. Cars are driving past you as you sit underneath the shade of the bus stop, sighing for what felt like the nth time. Thinking back to your conversation with your coach— were dreams always so hard to achieve?
Ever since you were little you loved the feeling of water against your skin, whether it was freezing cold or lukewarm— you had always enjoyed the way it embraced you whole. When you thought you couldn’t love being in the water even more— you learnt to swim, loving the speed, the resistance and the freedom it gave you to travel amongst the waves. You love swimming, and you want to make this a part of your life— to be remembered by something you are passionate about.
But now, just like the moon above— the vision of your dreams seem to be unclear. Like the stars in the sky, your goal seems to be so out of reach.
Always one step behind, and always trailing behind.
You suddenly felt a presence next to you. Usually you wouldn’t pay no mind, but somehow an unknown force brought your eyes to face the person. A male wearing the same uniform as you— instantly recognising him from the swim team, bangs still wet and a solemn expression painted on his face. You watch him as he looks up at the sky and sighs— a sense of deja vu hitting you as he’s acting the exact way you did prior. You’re drawn to him, and you realise he must be the boy you accidentally overheard in the hallway of the locker room.
And although you did not know his name, nor anything about him— you could somehow understand how he feels.
“It’s so far, isn’t it?” You didn’t realise you had said it out loud, though the male doesn’t seem to be fazed by a stranger talking to him unexpectedly.
The both of you look up at the skies. You have seen brighter stars before, but today— it just seemed like a speck of dust amongst the vastness of darkness.
“Will we ever get there?” The boy wonders and you’re surprised that his voice is a lot more soft spoken than you thought. Though it sounds soothing, complimenting the crisp air of the Autumn breeze.
You didn’t know how to reply. Personally you’re not so sure what your future lies ahead and you’re afraid to give him an answer.
So you hum in response, and yet he doesn’t question any further. A comfortable feeling of tranquility between the two of you, as you watch the vehicles run past.
The male stands up from his seat next to you, catching your attention as you look up at him. Spotting the bus halting at the station you’re at, you realise that it must be his ride home. He leaves you as he joins the line to get on, but just before he gets too far from your sight— he turns around to look at you.
“I’m Jake, by the way.” He smiles at you and which leaves a strange feeling in your heart. You realised, you haven’t had anyone genuinely smile at you for such a long time. Your team had never spared any glances your way, your coach was always so angry with you— and even your parents don’t seem to look at you the way he does. A sudden burst of energy, you return him with a smile of your own, your first smile of the day.
“I’m Y/N.”
-
There’s a line between you and the rest of your team. Sometimes you wonder whether you were really lacking, or was it because they were too good at the sport. Either way, you set yourself expectations every practice— hoping that you’ll cross the hurdle between first and second place.
After your last competition, your coach made you swim extra laps after practice. You tried to think positively, treating this a chance to practice and improve yourself more. Though, sometimes you wished you were as good as the rest of your team. You didn’t understand how your team always managed to get first in every category, and then there was you who grabbed second place every competition you participated in.
After the last lap, you decided to stay in the water a little longer. You had always preferred the water while you were alone. You watched the ripples of the pool, your fingers playing with the water droplets as you took your mind off things. When was the last time you had fun?
But your fun was short lived, hearing the faint footsteps entering the pool. Perhaps you have overstayed your welcome, you quickly swim to the edge of the pool. Pushing yourself up on the ledge, you stand up to grab a towel and leave. Your franticness makes you bump into an unknown figure, causing you to bow repeatedly.
“Sorry, I’m leaving now-”
“Y/N…?”
You look up to see the familiar boy you met at the bus stop, shirtless from waist up making you step back in shock— almost causing you to slip till he reached for your arm to maintain your balance.
“Thank you…Jake.” You sigh in relief as you stand back up, the feeling of his wrist around yours still linger.
“It’s no problem, what are you doing here?”
“Had to do extra laps.” You sound defeated in comparison to the look on your face. You seem way too happy to be doing extra laps, but perhaps it’s because of the boy standing in front of you.
The silence was a little awkward between the two of you, and before it could get any worse— you decided to take your leave, bowing once more before walking past him.
“Do you-” His voice made you turn to look at him, almost a little too quickly. “…want to watch me practice?”
You didn’t hesitate to give him a slight nod, and you swore you could see the slight brightness in his features and the small smile that prints on his lips. He quickly does his warm ups on the side of the pool while you make yourself home on the bench.
He steps onto the platform, his toes curling inwards at the edge of the pool before pushing himself for a dive. You watched him as he spreads his arms out wide, his broad back along with the length of his arms resisting against the water. You assume he specialises in Butterfly, with the way his form is straight as he forces himself up with the movement of his arms. The splash against the water was minimal and he’s going at a steady speed— it almost makes you wonder why his coach was so hard on him when he’s doing such a difficult swim style so effortlessly. You had never watched the male swim team, but if he was always second place— how good were the other players?
Watching him swim was an eye opener— you think that the distance between him and the stars should be a lot closer than you. Everything about him was flawless, and that he did not deserve to be told like he couldn’t pursue his dream.
Just the sounds of water splashing against the kicks of Jake’s feet, and the catches of breath you could hear when Jake’s head comes up to leave the water. You wonder what thoughts are going through his head? The more you watch him swim, the more interested in him.
“Do you want to race?” You don’t realise that Jake had just finished his laps. He places his arms on the edge of the pool to look at you. You realise he looks like a puppy in water, and your heart couldn’t help but feel warm at the sight. You quickly toss your towel next to you as you begin your warm ups.
“Bring it on.”
-
Jake won.
And even so, it didn’t feel as bad as the races you did. Not because it wasn’t a real competition, but maybe because your mind was at ease with him around. It was like a reminder to you of why you enjoyed being in water so much, you have not had this much fun in a long time. Though, all fun things come to an end.
“Do you think this is the time to play around?” You suddenly hear a shout coming from the entrance of the pool, you turn your head to see your coach and he does not look happy the slightest.
You quickly pushed yourself off the pool and stumbled towards him. Refusing to look at him as your head held low.
“At this rate, you’re going to be second place forever!” The volume of his voice is enough to attack your emotions, feeling the familiar burn in your throat. You’re mustering the courage to say something until you see Jake stand in front of you.
“We were practising together.” Jake looks up at your coach sternly.
You peek up to see your coach looking at you, then at Jake before looking back at you.
“As you both should, since the both of you are bringing your own teams down with your second places…” It hurts more than it should, and suddenly the vision of your dreams began to shatter.
“We will go to nationals.” You look up at Jake in surprise, you never thought that he could say such words with confidence. And somehow, your admiration for him grew even more. Even with such hurtful words coming from your coach, he doesn’t seem to falter at all.
“We’ll see about that.” And your coach walks away from the both of you. Once he was out of sight, you could see Jake lose his balance as he let out a sigh of relief. His stumble causing your reflexes to hold him and he gives you a smile.
“Let’s prove him wrong.”
-
You remember the first day of your school year. Excited to dip your feet in the large waters of your school’s swimming pool. The main reason you joined Belift High was because of its alumni, as well as the countless prodigies they have supported. In its history, there was not a single time where Belift High swimmers had gotten anything below first place. And you thought that you could walk in the same shoes as them.
You knew it wasn’t a walk in the park, but you didn’t know how competitive it would be.
You had admiration for your current coach, the very person who brought golden trophies to Belift each year. You respected him— you still did, but his words had always brought a knife to your heart one stab at a time.
“What is your future goal?” You remember he asked each student after the first swimming heats of the semester. You remember the expressions on your team’s faces, all sporting bright smiles and eyes glistening with their dreams in mind. You could see your coach acknowledging and nodding at their goals too. So you did the same, your innocence showing and stars in your eyes as your coach asked you the very question he asked his team.
“I want to go to nationals. I want to swim for the country.” And it was then you watched your coach’s expression turn sour, his smile wiped off his face instantly and with a deep breath he gave you the words you least wanted to hear.
“What place did you get today?” His voice is stern and his expression is unreadable. Though with your own instincts, you could tell your coach was not happy in the slightest.
“Second.”
“At this rate, nationals isn’t even close.”
You could feel your throat burn as tears started reaching at the corner of your eyes. The fact that your team was snickering at you doesn’t help your emotions either. Though you wiped your tears with the back of your hand, hoping you could control your broken heart as well as the dimming fire within you.
And even years later when your coach asks the same question, you tell him the very, and he replies with the same.
Today, your coach bumped into you in the hallways mentioning how he wanted to talk to you and the rest of the swim team after school. Usually in situations like these, it either meant two things: you were probably going to be scolded again or there is a competition coming up soon.
And though you should have been used to it by now, you always dread every meeting with your team.
As you made your way to the swimming pool, you took notice of a group of boys coming out of the locker rooms. And there you spotted the boy that you had been slowly but surely, growing a friendship with.
“Hey!” He pants.
“Hey.” You smile back at him as you watched him catch his breath. And you stopped to stare at him a little longer, his hair wet from practice, you could even smell the chlorine mixed with whatever shampoo he uses.
“Did you hear about the upcoming competition?”
You assume that’s what your coach was going to talk to you about today and you could feel your heartbeat out of your chest. It’s no surprise to have competitions once in a while, but this always meant that your coach will train you harsher than before, especially with your coach’s distaste in your skills anyway.
“I think it’s what I’m here for anyway.” You smiled at Jake and you watched him as he gave you a pat on the back.
“You can do it!” He smiles at you with a little fist bump before his friends pull him away. You gave him a wave and waved back before turning back to his friends, you could see them tease Jake as he pushed them away in laughter.
At least Jake and his team get along well.
-
And as expected, a competition was coming up soon and your practice is scheduled to be a lot more tougher than usual. You were told there may be a couple of scouts and recruiters during this competition and it would be a good chance for the team to get noticed if they ever wanted to be in the national team. The news gave you a burst of confidence, and even though your coach kept looking at you as if he didn’t expect much— you wanted to see the look on his eyes when he realises the potential you could carry.
To do this, you decided that you needed to train a little more and a little harder around your current training regime. You would’ve wanted to ask your team to practice with you but seeing as they do not care about you in any way, you’ve thought about asking your only swim friend.
Speaking of the devil, you watched the classroom window as he walked right past. You quickly got up from your seat, the friction causing a sudden screech alerting the entire room— you ran out of the door to catch up with Jake who was just heading to his own homeroom next to you.
“Jake!” You called for him and he turned around, a big smile on his face as if he was happy to see you.
“I wanted to ask you something, I’m not sure if you’re up for it though…” For some reason you felt your confidence diminish by the way he’s looking at you, he’s staring right into your eyes and that alone left your blood rushing up to your cheeks in embarrassment.
God, he is beautiful.
“What is it?” He tilts his head. And his voice sounds so nice too.
“Ah-” Your admiration interrupted as you went back on topic, “I wanted to ask if you want to do morning swim practice with me for the upcoming competition?”
You refuse to look at him, afraid that he’ll laugh at you for some reason or even question why you’re trying so hard. You slowly take a peek at him and you see him checking his phone, leaving you confused.
“Sure! I have nothing in the mornings.” He then gives his phone towards you, “Give me your number I’ll call you!”
The whole ordeal is happening too fast and way too well for you to imagine. You almost couldn’t believe what you had just heard. You slowly take his phone with both hands and insert your digits. And with a smile on Jake’s face he places his phone in his pocket and waves you goodbye. You wave back though you stood at the same spot, dumbfounded at how smoothly it had just gone. As he’s out of sight you feel a smile slowly creep up, the excitement building up for what’s about to come.
-
It’s early in the morning, the sun has yet to greet you and the school was filled with nothing but rustling leaves dancing across the field. You had arrived slightly before your meeting time with Jake and you thought to let the security know about your morning practices.
You’re waiting for Jake at your school’s swimming pool. The guard was nice enough to open up the area for you before school starts. You had gotten changed and did your warm up beforehand, leaving you to dip your legs into the water as you waited for the boy. You suddenly hear the frantic footsteps coming from the pool entrance and you see Jake panting with his swim gear.
“I’m so sorry! Let’s begin.” Jake laughs and you laugh along with him, walking towards the diving platform as you wait for him to get ready.
As Jake steps onto the platform next to you, he pushes his goggles against his nose bridge and he gives you a little smirk. You smile at him as you do the same, pulling your swim cap down before gripping your toes against the edge of the platform. Your arms pointed towards the pool as you took a deep breath.
“See you at the finish line Jake.” You spoke quietly but enough for him to hear and he counted down.
“3…2…1…”
“Go!” You both push yourself off the ledge as you begin your freestyle race, your arms flicking towards the air before striking down, turning your head sideways to get a breath in your system. You kick against the water and you could hear the muted splashes against your feet. With the corner of your eye you could see Jake was just in level with you. You turn forward, watching the finish line grow closer and closer as you reach your fingertips as far as you can as you touch the end of the pool. You rose from the water to catch your breath, watching as you see Jake right next to you. You take a look at the timer on the board, and you were only off by three seconds.
“So close!” You removed your goggles, massaging your nose bridge from the pressure.
“You did better than last time! You’re definitely going to do well.” The words that come out of Jake’s mouth reassured you, and you hoped you would hear it again from him on the day of the competition. You quickly pushed yourself off the water and grabbed your towel and stopwatch in the process.
“Alright, let's start with your practice first. Then we could do mine.” You suggested and Jake nodded as he began to swim back to the platforms.
Jake swims as if the water rides along with him, he spreads his arms as wide as he could, the stretch accentuating his broad back and he lifts himself up so effortlessly. It does not make sense that Jake would come in second with skills like this. He truly resembled a butterfly rising through water, his arms as his wings and the water completing the art that he creates through the way he swims. It’s beautiful, and he is everything you wish to be in the eyes of others.
With each lap Jake does, his time decreases little by little. To you, such improvement could only be because he was such a good swimmer. Yet again, how could his coach not see the beauty that is in the way he swims? What was it that Jake lacks in the eyes of his teacher? You look at Jake with glowing eyes and you don’t even notice that he does the same. He has stopped his practice and he’s staring at you. And even without saying, all he does is gives you a smile and it’s like he’s telling you that you could do the same.
-
You have been practising with Jake for almost a week now, and you do see the improvements in both Jake and yourself as well.
Jake gives you the best comments and feedback in the way you swim, he gives you exceptional pointers on what you could improve and you were always thankful for Jake in allowing you to change the way you swim and yet focus on your usual form.
You wanted to thank him so you had decided to ask him whether he was available for breakfast before school which he agreed to.
You chose a tiny coffee shop close to the school. The coffee shop was hidden in the main street, different potted plants decorate the window sills and the aroma of coffee scented around the entrance door. You’re quite happy that you’ve found such a gem as none of the students in your school seem to visit this shop despite it being so close to your school.
“Sorry, I’m late! I never realised there was a coffee shop around here.” Jake pulls out his chair sitting before you.
“It’s alright. Not a lot of people know about this place.”
“Ooh…then it’ll be our own secret location then.” He gives you a little wink which causes your cheeks to heat up. You could tell that Jake is no beginner in flirtatious acts. He was definitely suave in more ways than you thought and even the wink was natural to him. You tried to put it behind you, even though you could feel your cheeks blush.
“I’ll take an iced latte, you?” You questioned.
“Iced Americano.”
The waiter takes both of your orders with a smile before heading back to the counter. You fiddled your fingers whilst trying to think of what to say to the boy in front of you.
“I just want to thank you for practising with me.” You shy away slightly. Jake’s presence makes you slightly nervous.
“No! I want to thank you for asking me. The sessions really do help me out a lot!” Jake smiles at you before the waiter interrupts your conversation with both of your drinks. You both thank the waiter before sipping your drinks, feeling refreshed at the sudden coolness.
The silence starts to grow comfortable, and you’re no longer nervous in front of Jake after a while of sitting in front of him. You both had been talking about things other than swimming as well as what you’re both up to in school.
Though as you both reveal more about each other, you start to delve into the sport you both shared.
“Why do you swim Jake?” The air grows a little solemn, but you’re curious. Ever since you eavesdropped on the conversation between Jake and his coach, you wonder what keeps him going.
“Because I feel free.” You nodded at his words, completely understanding what he meant. It was the exact same reason as to why you began to swim for the first place, and the same reason why you wanted to pursue a career in swimming.
“Then, what are your goals?”
“Nationals. It would be nice to represent Korea as well.” You looked at him in surprise. Your dreams were the exact same as his, and you suddenly grow a little too excited.
“Me too. Though, it’s hard when you're in second place all the time.” You sound a little dejected and Jake takes notice of him. With your head looking down you suddenly feel Jake’s warm palm on top of your head and you look up at him, slowly— so that he wouldn’t remove his hand away from you.
“We can do it, I’m sure.”
It felt like a sudden surge of energy rushed through you. Never would you have thought just simple words would leave you feeling motivated. He lets go and with the same hand, he gives you his pinky.
“Promise me you’ll make it to nationals.”
You stared at his pinky for a while, a little afraid to make such a big promise with him. You’ve always doubted your abilities, and you hate to make a promise that you can’t keep. You stare at his pinky for a while, and you could tell that Jake could sense your hesitancy.
“Come on, my hand is tired!” He encourages you, and you look at him. He’s still smiling, and with the look on his face he’s still coaxing you to make this promise with him. He has so much hope in you, and you vow to not disappoint him. But that is, if he is willing to walk the same path as you.
“Only if we both make it together.” You give in and interlock his pinky with yours. It’s like you could feel the faintest spark between your intertwined fingers. A symbolised promise between the two of you, and you’re hoping that it’ll come true.
-
You’ve been practising with Jake for almost a month now, and you have about another week left till the competition begins. Just like the usual routine, you arrive at the pool a little early, Jake runs in apologising for being late, and the both of you start with a race. This time, Jake suggested doing races for the full session so that the both of you are prepared for the real thing.
It’s also a good change of pace between constant sessions of timing each other.
“Loser gets splashed.” Jake speaks up next to you.
“You’re so on.”
The both of you count to one and like you’re most familiar with, you dive into the pool with ease. With multiple practice sessions with Jake, you began to find your own comfort and style while swimming freestyle. Your stamina was a lot better, and you felt a lot lighter in the water. And just a few centimetres away, your fingertips touch the wall and you see Jake trailing just slightly behind you.
“Yes!” Your fist punches the water in excitement and Jake applauds you. You take a look at him and in just a split second he begins to swim away as you push the water against him. You watched as he used his hands to shield the water splashing towards his face, but you gave him no mercy as you continued to chase after him. You caught up to him and in defence he grabs onto your wrists pinning you against the corner of the pool.
The sounds of the water splashing stops and the pool is silent. The laughter shared between the both of you dies down as you realise your compromising position. You think Jake was going to let go but instead he does nothing but, though his grip softens a little bit. You try to avoid his eye contact but it was no use, so you stare back at him and you watch as the droplets on his face drips down to water below you. You watch him focus on your eyes, then now to your lips then back towards your vision once again.
“C-Can I kiss you?” It’s the first time you see Jake so shy to the point that he even stutters on his words. Right now, you would like to believe you were in a dream. Jake was only centimetres away from you, the sunlight from the window behind you shining as if the spotlight was on him. He’s glowing in front of you, and the outline is so bright he doesn’t seem real. So much that you closed your eyes and open them again to just to see if you would wake up from the dream you believe that you are in.
But he’s still standing before you, waiting for your response and he’s quivering— anxious but yet hopeful that you’ll allow him to place his lips on yours. So you nod and you close your eyes once again, and then you feel the cushion of his lips pressed against yours. His soft lips taste like chlorine but you didn’t mind, all you knew was that the boy that you’ve been trying to reach is right in your arms. He lets go of your wrists and holds your cheeks in the warmth of his palms and you wrap your arms around his neck as you cherished the moment.
“I really like you.”
You felt like you were on cloud nine.
-
There is an unspeakable feeling between you and Jake. After your rendezvous with him, the both of you continued practising with smiles on your faces. No words exchanged but just a newfound understanding between each other. The feeling of being with Jake could not be explained in detail, and yet you feel yourself grow to like him more each day. You’re starting to believe you cannot live a day without seeing him at least once.
There is no label that describes your relationship with him. And you’re aware that in the opinions of others it may be a bother— unsure of what line they are treading across. But you’re quite content with what you and Jake are now. You like to emphasise that it’s more of a relationship between two people who are beginning to learn the feeling of love.
Even without saying it directly, Jake seems to feel the same way. And it’s clear to the both of you that it’s your first time experiencing such an emotion between you. And it’ll likely take some time for the both of you to accept each other as two people who are in love.
You’ve always imagined falling in love to be a magical thing, a slow process between two people and a rare occasion for one to reciprocate feelings for another. But after your shared kiss with Jake, your perception had shifted drastically. Not only has it been less than a few months since you’ve met Jake, but your feelings for him developed so quick that you almost didn’t notice it until he asked to kiss you. And with that, it seemed like he has taken an interest in you too.
Though, you couldn’t dwell on your feelings any longer than now that your competition is only a day away. It sucks, but the both of you have to focus on what’s ahead of you. As the hours go by, you start to feel distressed and worried for what the future holds.
You’re wiping your palms against your uniform as you start to think of all the possible scenarios that could happen at the competition when you accidentally bumped into Jake who had just sent off his friends.
“Oh Y/N!”
You were a bit shy to look at Jake, memories of the morning flashing through your mind. You look away towards the window next to you, but Jake couldn’t help but move his face in line with your vision.
“Now, don’t be shy. You weren’t so shy with me when we-” Your eyes quickly widened and reached for Jake’s mouth to prevent him from teasing you any further, turning your head left and right to see if anyone heard the conversation. Making sure the coast is clear you let go of his mouth with a sigh and Jake chuckled.
“Good luck on the competition tomorrow.” He quickly sneaks in a quick peck on your cheek before running away, shouting a ‘Bye Y/N!’ loud enough for everyone in the hallway to hear his voice. Usually you would want to hide in a corner in embarrassment, but you were too caught up on the sudden peck to dawn on what had just happened.
He’s a sneaky one, isn’t he?
-
And soon the day of the competition arrives. You were doing stretches in your changing room, while the rest of your team chatter amongst themselves. You plugged in your earbuds, listening to some acoustic music to calm your nerves down. Even so, you could still hear the loud cheers from the crowd outside and you hoped to not disappoint them with another second place.
Your competition was one of the firsts of many races today. The sun was blaring from above, the noises from the thunder sticks hitting against each other along with the chants from the bleachers could be heard in the sidelines. The atmosphere was intense and it gave you the adrenaline rush that you needed.
Passing the heats of your swimming competition was easy but you knew that the finals was what always set you back. The opponents you faced were nothing like the heats nor the players back in middle school. Seeing so many incredible swimmers made you realise that your goal was definitely not an easy ride. Mentally giving yourself a pep talk, you did your final stretch before stepping onto the platform. The sounds of the crowd now tuned out and all you could focus on was the rapid thumps of your heart against your chest.
“On your marks, get set…”
The siren blares through and in reflex you push yourself off the ledge of the diving board. The tips of your fingers pierce through the water as you perform two butterfly kicks before fluttering your feet against the water. You swim past the resistance of the tide, your arms stretching as far as you can to get the most out of your strides. You try to limit the amount of times to catch your breath, hoping to use your stamina to the fullest till you reach the finish line.
With each kick you splash against the water, the closer you see yourself to the end of the pool. So with one final push you stretch your fingertips to the wall, touching it fully before taking your head out of the water.
You hear the crowd cheer and you’re nervous to look at the scoreboard in front of you, it’s only when you notice your coach in the end of the pool with his jaw dropped you look at the board above you.
You did it.
You had made first place, and with the fastest record out of your team.
Then the emotions got the best of you. The tears began to fall nonstop, it’s almost as if your team began to cry with you. As you pushed yourself out of the water, your team immediately ran to hug you— even though they never treated you well and they were also your rivals, you had always felt like they somehow understood your predicament. No matter how skillful one is, everyone has had a journey to get to where they are.
You wrap yourself with your towel as you head to the locker rooms, only to see Jake waiting for you at the entrance. And without thinking you ran up to him and he took you in his arms, crying on his shoulder more. He pats your back in comfort and gives you tiny pecks on your forehead, and if you weren’t too busy crying you would see the slightly watery eyes he has.
“You did so well.”
You pulled back with a smile as you wiped your tears and patted your puffiness down, “Good luck.”
Jake waved you goodbye and you quickly went to get changed so that you could make it in time for his race. You were nervous for him to say the least, but yet you were confident he was going to do well.
Once you were warmed up, you sat on the sidelines to cheer for Jake. He was warming up in the centre lane, and you took a look at his opponents while you were at it. He steps on the platform, realising that he was about to start his race any minute now. You look at him closely, your fists balled in your lap as you silently cheer for him in your heart.
The siren sounds the entire pool and the swimmers dive into the water. Your eyes never leave Jake as he swims just like you have witnessed many times before. He’s still as beautiful as ever, just like a butterfly in his element as he flies across the water. You see him taking the lead and everything seems to go smoothly so far.
Wait.
You stood up from your seat as you took notice of Jake holding onto his arm right for a split second, but yet he acts like nothing has happened and he continues to swim. You begin the worry now, and you could see he’s trailing behind a couple of swimmers right next to him. You quickly walk towards the end of the pool, hoping to catch him at the finish line. You could tell that he’s hurting and even so, he does not give up, and he manages to snatch himself a second place after all. Though with the way he’s looking at the scoreboard he does not look pleased, and neither does the coach who is staring him down. He pushes himself off the water wincing at the pressure he places on his arm and walks away from his team as well as from you.
You would like to believe that he may have not noticed you standing there, but you thought you should leave him alone for now.
You hope that he’s okay.
-
“Y/N congratulations! It seems like the Seoul swim team has taken an interest in you.” Your coach lets you in on the big news and you stood in front of him mindlessly, trying to take in your coach’s sudden change of attitude as well as what you had just heard from him.
“Seoul?”
“Yes, they are inviting you for tryouts after your senior year ends.” The coach gives you a pat on the back, “I knew you could do it, I was just trying to give you that push.”
You watched as your coach walked away, though you are really happy that one of the biggest swim teams are interested in you— you couldn’t help but worry about Jake.
You had not spoken or seen him ever since the competition, and you thought to give him a few days for him to rest. But as a week goes by, you begin to worry for his well-being. You asked his team his whereabouts and they tell you that he hasn’t been showing up to practice as well as his classes. You tried calling and messaging him a couple of times to no response, so you asked his team for his address.
You’re standing in front of his door and you start to think of the multiple things to say once he opens the door— or maybe he won’t open the door at all. You were about to walk away when you suddenly hear the door open and Jake peeks out to look at you.
“My friends told me you were coming.”
“Ah.” Well this is slightly embarrassing.
“Come on in.” He opens the door further and lets you inside. You proceed to take off your shoes and walk in his apartment. His place was clean, decorated with wooden furniture and potted plants, a couple of medals and trophies from the bookshelf as well as family pictures on the drawers.
“Drink?” You hear Jake ask you from behind, you turn around to face him with a smile.
“Water is fine.”
You made yourself comfortable on his couch, staring at Jake as he prepared your water. Usually he would be happy to see you, he would even be the one to initiate conversation— but today his face shows no emotion, just sadness behind his eyes. Instinctively you walk up behind him, wrapping your arms around his waist from behind and he stops everything that he’s doing.
“Tell me what’s on your mind.” You could feel Jake’s shaking up and you take a peek to see his tears rolling down his cheeks. You let go instantly and made him turn towards you, wiping his sadness away.
“Why is it so hard to achieve your dreams?” You could hear the crack in Jake’s voice and you began to embrace him once again, hoping you could comfort him in some way. He looks at the trophies and medals on his shelf, reminiscing the time when he felt happy in the water.
“Every time I see the finish line, it only goes further and further away.” He lets out an exhale, the words hesitantly coming out of his mouth.
“I’m tired Y/N, should I just…give up?” You look at him immediately and shake your head, refusing to hear any longer. You grabbed onto his shoulder to bring his attention to you, and you watched as his eyes widened. You were furious, you could not believe what you had just heard from him.
“What the fuck do you think you’re saying?” It was rare for you to use such language, nevertheless use a tone towards anyone. But you could not bear to hear Jake demean himself any longer.
“I see you looking at your achievements Jake, how did you think you got to where you are now?” Jake stays silent, letting you continue on. “It’s you. You worked hard to get here, are you really going to let all that go down the drain?”
“But Y/N I just feel like I don’t have a reason to swim anymore-”
“Me!” You cut him off and he looks at you, “I want to see you reach your dreams, I want to see it happen.” Jake softens up at your words.
“I thought of the same thing, I wanted to give up…that was until I met you. You told them you wanted to prove that we can do it right? You taught me to hold on, I don’t understand why you couldn’t do the same.”
“We still have one more competition left, and I want to see you reach the finish line. Whatever place you get, I want to see you swim.” And at this moment you felt yourself get pulled into Jake’s arms, this time a lot tighter than usual. It feels like he does not want to let you go, so you stay still for him to hold you a little longer.
“I’m sorry Y/N…I’m sorry. I’ll promise you, I’ll make it there.” And you wrap yourself around him once again, whispering reassurances to him that it was okay. You’re glad that you’ve managed to talk some sense to him, and you’re hoping he’ll reach for the same star that you’ve managed to get ahold of.
-
Ever since your win, you had been grabbing first place constantly and even your competition just now, you had just managed to get yourself a gold.
You knew that Jake was coming up soon and you prayed to yourself that he would swim through his laps without trouble. Sitting underneath the shade of the pool, you watched as he did his warm ups.
He was in good condition today, and deep inside you knew that he’ll make it to the finish line.
Like he always has.
You watched as Jake stepped onto the diving board, taking deep breaths, pulling his swimming cap and tightening his goggles in the process. He touches his toes and bends his knees in a position, his toes preparing himself for the push. You could hear the standby lines, and your heartbeat quickens in response. On three, the siren alarms and he pushes himself into the pool, his butterfly kicks smooth underneath the water, his arms stretches and his chest lifting himself out of the water to dive right back in. He’s quick with his arms and you could see him catch minimal breaths before resuming back in the blue. He’s reaching the halfway mark and he’s taking the lead, though you could not be relieved yet as his opponents are only a few strokes behind. Your eyes never left him, you’re holding your breath as he grows closer to the opposite end of the pool and he touches the wall. You immediately look up to the scoreboard and you see his time placed on the first row of the board.
He fulfilled his promise.
You quickly jump up and run to where he was. And you could see him punch the water in excitement as he raises his fists in the air in victory. Ignoring all the warnings of ‘no running around the pool’, you watched Jake leave the water and run up to you.
“I did it!”
“You did it!”
You both laugh in each others arms, ignoring the amount of people who were looking at the both of you. You could see his team cooing on the sidelines, even his coach seems relieved at Jake’s achievement. But Jake’s eyes were only on you and you had never ever been happier for him.
You notice that Jake’s coach is waiting for him, so you insinuate him to go to his team. Though he refuses to let go of his arm, you push him to go— not wanting him to get into trouble.
Everything is going well for the both of you.
-
You meet Jake at the rooftop of your school. It’s late at night, the moon shaped like a crescent, glows above you. And the stars shined a lot brighter than usual. The wind was crisp but not cold enough for an extra layer, and the air was quiet. You and Jake laid down, appreciating the glitters decorating the night.
“How are you feeling?” You break the silence as you turn around to look at him. Even at night Jake glows brighter than the stars in the sky, you could say that Jake is the star himself.
“Out of this world.” He replies as he turns to face you, his smile never leaving his face and he looks at you with loving eyes. “It’s all because of you.”
“No, it’s all you.”
You both stare at each other for a little longer before turning back to the sky, commenting on which star was the brightest, pointing towards different directions of the darkness. Daydreaming as you stare up at the sky, you could feel Jake intertwining his fingers along with yours, taking your attention away.
“Busan wants me.” Jake breaks the news and suddenly the air is tense, your face drops and you turn to look at Jake who is already looking straight at you.
“I know, Seoul asked for you right?” He continues on. You never had the chance to tell him ever since the incident, and you’re mad at yourself for not being able to tell him yourself.
“That’s good! We’re both one step closer, right?” You feign sadness, refusing to accept the reality that has been shoved right to your face.
“But…what about us?” You did not want to answer his question, nor did you want to face the reality that is your separation. You already swore to yourself you could not live without him, but who were you to stop him from chasing his dream?
“Jake…” You smile at him and he does too. Neither of you wanted to face the truth, and neither of you are ready to move on with your lives. The both of you would be too busy for each other, with training, practice and even your lives— deep inside you both knew that maintaining a long distance relationship would not last.
“You should go to Busan.”
“Y/N!”
“I can’t stop you from going to your dream.” You both stayed in silence. Jake understood you and he thought the same. He can’t bring you with him either and that you both had to accept the harsh reality. You don’t have a lot of time left together, and you did not want to leave Jake in an argument or even sadness.
“Then…let’s just cherish…what we have now, okay?” You nod at his words and he pulls you closer to him. You sniffle against his chest, hoping to treasure the moment with you in his arms.
Just a little longer.
-
Then senior year comes to a close. You’re wearing your graduation gown, taking pictures with your classmates and your team. Now that your school year has ended, you’ve grown to put all your bad blood and unwanted memories behind and appreciate the new friendships you’ve developed along the way.
No matter how many ups and downs you had with your team, you had always appreciated them in some way. Even though they never treated you well, you thought of them as a motivation to do better. And it took graduation to forgive and forget, and that even such experiences are memories you wished you keep.
However, there was only one person you wanted to see at the moment.
You ran to where his classroom is, peeking at the window hoping to catch a glimpse of where he could be. There you could see him taking pictures with his friends, and for a split second you spot him looking at you, gesturing you to come towards him.
You walk up to him and he passes his phone to his friends. “Hey, can you help me take a picture?”
He pulls you next to him and wraps his arm around you, his friends taking multiple pictures of the both of you in different poses. He takes his phone back and turns to face you, removing the strand of hair and tucking it behind your ear.
“Ah!” You reach for your pocket as you hand him an envelope, a ‘To Jake’ written on top of it. “Don’t read it now! Read it when you’re on the way to Busan.” He takes the letter from you and smiles at your handwriting before tucking it in his pocket.
You only have a few hours to spare before you both have to go your separate ways, and you’ve decided for your last time together the both of you would hang around your shared home.
The pool.
The both of you took your shoes off, dipping your feet into the water as you sat side by side. None of you shared any words, just trying to live the moment as much as you can with each other. You focus on the way the water ripples beneath your feet as Jake does the same, laughing at his antics as he kicks a little water to your side.
You hear his phone buzz indicating that it was time for him to go and suddenly everything hits you. Jake was about to leave you, and the both of you are about to take the next step towards your dream.
You send him off at the bus stop and he gives you one last hug. You did not want your separation to be a sad one, so you held your tears back and smiled at him as he let go. Though you’re still in his arms, you look up at him one last time and he returns you with a smile as well.
“Goodbye Y/N.”
“Goodbye, Jake.”
You watch him as he walks away further away from you, waving at him as he looks at you for a final time.
In your eyes, Jake was a star that you desired to reach. He stood by your side through the journey towards your dreams. You both relied and gave each other a reason to continue forth and without each other you wouldn’t be able to get to where you both are today. Though the moment between the both of you was brief, you knew you will always love Jake no matter how far he goes.
He was a part of your youth and you hope someday in the future, he could be more.
And that was a different story to be told.
Dear Jake,
By the time you’re reading this, you’re probably on the bus to Busan. Though Seoul and Busan are still part of South Korea it still seems so far away.
Do you miss me yet? Because I for sure, miss you.
I remember when we first met at the bus stop, I didn’t even know what came over me but I began talking to you. To be honest, I overheard your coach scolding you. I thought you were just like me— getting second place all the time, getting told off by the coach. So I began asking you, whether dreams were all so hard to reach.
And you questioned the same thing as I did, even though you never gave me a solid answer. But yet again, I couldn’t give you one either.
I thought it would be the last time I’ll ever see you.
But no, we saw each other again at school. And you stood up for me against the coach. It was then I realised you were a lot different than I was. I was so close to giving up, but you were always so positive. You were always so confident that you and I could make it to Nationals— even our coaches couldn’t see that kind of future. But you assured me that we will, you wanted to prove them wrong and you wanted to show them what you were made of. That alone had me motivated everyday, you inspire me to be better and not to give up on chasing my dreams.
And I hope you continued to do the same.
It took me a lot of courage to ask you to practice with me by the way. And bless, that you did. The practice sessions not only improved my swimming overall but I also got to know you even more. It was also then when we realised our feelings for each other. I never knew you felt the same way, and honestly it was slightly overwhelming too. To me, you were someone who was so out of reach, I did not deserve your feelings.
When I won my first competition, I knew I had to see you. You were my motivation, the reason for my win and you helped me so much to improve and find myself. I will forever be thankful for everything that you did for me. Don’t say it was all me, because without you I probably will not be entering Seoul tryouts right now.
Our chapter is coming to a close, but I hope you won’t be too upset. I just want to remind you not to give up, and that you will always get to where you are. It’s just the matter of time that you’ll touch the stars you desire to reach. I hope that Busan treats you well and perhaps in the future, we’ll swim at the same pool.
Actually, I know we’ll definitely see each other again.
Thank you for being a part of this journey with me. I know it sounds dramatic, but my youth was built around you. My final year of highschool ended perfectly with you, and maybe in the future we’ll share the same goal, just as we once did. I hope you take care of yourself, and I wish that you continue to be free.
And Jake, thank you for being my first love.
Y/N.

Your quiet sobs ripple through your body as you watch your dead friend ascend into the sky one last time. Jake’s brows expressing great pain and frustration over Spider being captured by the RDA. “We need to get back to camp now.” Jake breaking your delirious trance. You all nod to your leader, making your way back to the Ikrans nestled on the branches. Your Oare comes into your sight, then Neytiri’s Zrina. You immediately start crying again, knowing that the beautiful beast will never have another rider in its life because of Neytiri’s death. Neteyam mounts on his Ikran, taking Kiri with him. Jake mounts his with little Tuk, stroking Bob softly. Lo’ak mounts with you, with his thighs straddling against your back. You make the bond, and command your Ikran to fly as Jake and the others take off into the sky turning into dawn with Zrina flying alone next to you. Your ride still, filled with your quiet sobs and sniffles, you feel Lo’ak’s hands wrap around your stomach rubbing small circles on your skin. You feel him trying to comfort you as best he can, despite losing his own mother. You need to keep it together for the kids now, you must have a strong heart. Bear the burden so no one else has to. As the early morning sky bores its glory, your home comes into your sight. Banking down to land, you fear telling Mo’at Neytiri’s condition, your heart slowly breaking in half all over again.
Landing into the trees, you’re paralyzed with the grief taking hold of your body. You feel Lo’ak grip your waist as he tries to dismount the Ikran. “Tani?” Looking up to you, holding his hand out for you to take. You carefully grab his hand, sliding off your animal. The others walk to you, forming your familiar group. “We need to meet Norm at the medical tent, and inform Mo’at.” Jake looks to you sadly. You share his sadness, his grief, his loss. You may not know the pain of losing a mate, but you’ve now lost two sisters. The gaping hole in your heart begging to be mended somehow. You nod to him, as you walk through your home, head held down in defeat. Your people see your arrival, noticing your missing member. Mo’at is the first to approach you. Your watery eyes look into hers, as she speaks. “I fear the Great Mother was right.” She whispers stoically. What is she talking about? You think to yourself. She looks to your sobbing form, then to Jake behind you. “Where is my daughter’s body?” Jake stunned as well, you turn your head to him, as he looks swiftly to you, then Mo’at. “I- Norm’s on his way with Max and the team to bring her to your medical tent.” She nods, as Tuk runs to her with open arms. “Grandma!” Now crying into her grandmother’s stomach, she lifts the small Sully and beckons the rest of you to follow her to her space. You enter the tent, awaiting Neytiri’s arrival. Tears streaming down your face, and heavy breathing you feel as if you’re re living last night’s events over again. Tuk crying into Mo’at now gets placed to Kiri, as Mo’at prepares herbs and a familiar tea that fills your nose with its sweet aroma. She places the steaming cup into your shaking hands, “Here child, drink. It will ease your nerves.” She says with a small smile. You slowly bring the tea to your lips, feeling its warmth encompass you, flowing into your body. “Thank you Mo’at.” You say shakily. “Sit, all of you, I must relay the message of our Great Mother.” Your brows furrow with confusion as you make your way to sit on the mats and pillows next to Neteyam putting your cup down. You lean into his strong body feeling the warmth radiating from his skin, while his arm wraps around your smaller form to comfort you. This action does not go unnoticed by Jake, the confusion in his belly burning uncomfortable emotions. He brings himself out of his own thoughts as Mo’at clears her throat. “Yesterday morning while you were scouting, I was given a vision from our Great Mother. The balance of life has been asked. Neytiri was being called home. Eywa has now asked for the union of Jake Sully and Tani te Ol’ul Peyral’ite.” Your jaw practically falls to the floor, the air in your lungs sucked out, your stomach in knots. Jake is first to speak. “Mo’at what the hell are you talking about?” His emotions ruling his mind now, racing a thousand miles a minute. She clicks her tongue as if irritated. “You must marry Tani in order to keep our clan together, Jake. Eywa has asked for this union.” You now gasp, with your vision going black. It was bad enough your close friend was murdered in front of you, and now you’re being asked to marry her mate? Your breath now ragged, you feel Neteyam grab hold of you rubbing circles on your back cooing softly in your ear. “Hey Tani, take a deep breath for me.” You hear through your ears ringing.
Lo’ak, Kiri, and Tuk all sit in disbelief, not truly understanding their grandmother’s words. Kiri the first to speak of the Sully kids, “Grandmother, why did Eywa give you a vision about my mom’s death, if we could’ve prevented it?” Mo’at turns to Kiri, shaking her head. “My child, that is not how our Great Mother provides. Neytiri’s time was called, her fate sealed. I was given the message that the balance of life may reside with Jake and Tani’s union. Leading our people.” With you now clinging to Neteyam, Jake shakes his head in denial. “Hey, hey there’s gotta be another way right? Ask her if there’s something else we can do Mo’at?” He’s frantically pacing back and forth shaking his hands. Mo’at just shakes her head in displeasure. “It is decided.” Your breathing now slowed, you seek comfort in Neteyam’s embrace. You look to your elder, “When?” Your own words betraying you, as Jake looks to you as shocked as you feel. She sighs softly. “After the funeral. The sooner the better my child. I am sorry it has to be this way. It does not bring me joy to know my daughter has met her end. May you find comfort that Neytiri is with our Great Mother now, she has found her peace.” Your tears coat your cheeks, at hearing Mo’at’s words. You nod your head hesitantly, reluctantly accepting your fate. You hear your neck comms beep to life. “Jake, we’re just a click over your base, prepare for arrival. Over.” Norm’s voice solidifying your reality. Jake brings his hands to his neck, “Got it, we’ll meet you in front of the medical tent, over.” He looks to you one last time, before leaving the tent preparing for the scientist’s arrival. Kiri softly plays with Turk’s braids as Mo’at begins making space for the body. You look to Lo’ak who’s been too silent this entire time. You look to him softly crying. “Lo.” You open your arms for him. He makes his way over to where you and Neteyam are huddled, embracing your touch. Your arms wrapping around his smaller body. You kiss his forehead, and rub his braids hoping he finds solace in your attempt to comfort him. His face now in the nook of your neck, “I can’t believe she’s really gone.” His voice muffled. You cry at his sadness, “I know my love, I am so sorry. I’m sorry.” As you both cry, Neteyam’s ears perk up to the sound of footsteps. Jake enters the tent carrying Neytiri’s lifeless form. Your crying now interrupted with the arrival, shocking your senses.
You whip your head to his large figure standing in front of the tent entry, holding your dead friend. His eyes filled with sorrow, trying to stay strong for you and his kids. You all get up, to where he makes his way to Mo’at. She silently beckons him to lay Neytiri down on the grass woven mat. He gently lays down her body, as Mo’at gets a bucket of water and cloths. “We must clean her body, get the children to say goodbye to their mother Jake.” You make your way over to Neytiri now holding Lo’ak’s hand, slowly kneeling down, over her lifeless form. “Tuk, come here.” You softly call out to the youngest Sully. She makes her way over to you with Kiri. Her small sniffles making your heart break. You release Lo’ak’s hand and grab Tuk’s guiding her small hand to her mother’s head stroking her braids gently. “All energy is only borrowed, and some day you have to give it back. Our Great Mother does not take sides, she only protects the balance of life.” You coo to the Sully children. Your gaze scans to Kiri, Lo’ak, Neteyam and then Tuk. “Your mother did not die in vain, she died a hero, protecting her children. You’re all here because of her. Take comfort in knowing she is with our ancestors now. Her spirit will reside with the Spirit Tree. She is now the wind caressing your hair, the water in which we drink to stay alive, the grass our feet tread on, the food that nourishes us, the first breath a baby takes after birth. Your mother will never truly be gone, as her spirit is all around us.” You speak to the Sully kids. Jake now crying at your words, succumbing to his emotions, grabs hold of Kiri reaching out to him. In this time of great sorrow, you must find the light. There will be light as long as there is hope.
“Take this.” Mo’at hands you a wet cloth. Your eyes look to your friend’s body, blood still soaked on her stomach and loincloth. Mo’at closes her eyelids gently, as she starts wiping away the blood on her navel. You begin cleaning Neytiri’s hands gently, as your tears fall to her skin. Kiri silently grabs a cloth and helps to guide Tuk’s hands over her mother’s hair, cleaning the dirt from the braids. You feel Neteyam’s hand engulf yours as he assists you cleaning his mother’s legs, his other hand on the back of your neck. Lo’ak crouches next to you as he watches you clean his mother, not being able to bring himself to do so. After some time passes and Neytiri’s body now cleaned, Mo’at prepares the funeral garments. “Children you must leave, as we prepare your mother for the funeral. Jake, notify our people of this circumstance. Tanywral, you and Kiri will assist.” You nod to her wiping your wet nose. Kiri now making her way over to you. The boys and Tuk take one last look at their mother, and follow Jake as he walks through the tent to share the news. Mo’at hands the funeral garments to you and Kiri as you prepare Neytiri for the ritual. Once you’re done adorning the black material on her now bound form, you look to Kiri, who shares a sad small to you. You pull her in for a hug, bringing your hand to ruffle her hair. “Oh Kiri.” You sob. You and her cry quietly into each other as Mo’at sadly stares at the two of you, wringing out the bloody cloths. Your cries slow, and you bring your face to meet Kiri’s, “we need to get ready for the ritual Kiri.” She sniffles, and nods, as you stand up and exit the tent. You two go to your separate tents, feeling empty and drained from the last 24 hours of your life. You enter your home, and prepare your funeral garments. Material that has only been worn a handful of times in your life, you bring it to your chest dreading its purpose.
Your tent flap suddenly opens, as you whip your head to see your unexpected guest. “Neteyam?” You ask inquisitively. He walks toward you, sighing softly. His face riddled with exhaustion like you. “I just wanted to check on you, I can’t stand the sight of you crying.” Your eyes never once wavering with their tears, confused you can even produce this much water still. Your wet eyes meet his, as you put your garments down on your table. You take a deep breath for the first time since last night. “I don’t know how to go on without her. You lost your mother ‘Teyam. I lost a sister. And what your grandmother said, I-I am so confused.” Your voice trails off. His taller body comes close to you, feeling the heat from his skin. “I don’t know what’s going to happen Tani, but all I know is that I’ve loved you since I completed my dream hunt and we snuck that fermented Yovo fruit juice behind my family’s tent. You’ve been in my life ever since I could remember. I can’t wait another day without telling you, not after everything’s happened.” You lightly smile at the memory he relays and take a deep breath. “Oh Sully. This is not the time or place to profess a crush.” You chuckle awkwardly.
Before Neteyam can register what’s going on, a dry cough interrupts your moment. You both whip your heads to the source. Jake stands in your tent doorway, looking tense with both fists clenched. “Neteyam, go helps your sibling with funeral preparations.” Neteyam bows his head, “Yes sir.” Before looking to you one last time, taking your hand and squeezing it quickly. “Wanna tell me what the hell that was about?”

Stop Staring ~ Jake Sim
Tumblr media
Your attention lifted from your phone as soon as you heard the lock turn of the bathroom door, looking across as it opened up, revealing Jake after freshening up ready to head off for a day of exploring with you during a rare day off whilst travelling around on tour.
Your eyes were drawn straight away to the towel that was wrapped around his waist, catching the last few droplets of water that ran down his chest. As your eyes moved up, the corners of your mouth turned up too, with Jake moving around the bedroom of your hotel room, blissfully unaware of your eyes following every single move that he made.
You struggled to stay composed as you watched him move around, you simply couldn’t think of a better way to wake up in the mornings. His body was something that Jake was quite shy about, but you never failed to make sure that you appreciated it.
As he started to get his bits from the table that was in front of the mirror in the room, Jake began to feel a presence behind him. Picking up his brush, he glanced in the reflection of the mirror, looking back to the bed where you were sat up, staring across at him.
His heart raced as he spotted you, feeling shy all of a sudden as he figured where exactly you were looking.
You were far too lost to have any idea that Jake had caught you, not even looking in the direction of his eyes at all. Despite only being able to see his front in the mirror, it didn’t change how defined it was for you, and certainly didn’t change the fact that you felt incredibly lucky being able to cuddle up beside Jake every night.
“Stop staring,” he laughed as he began to feel a little flustered himself, unsure what to do knowing that he was receiving so much silent attention from you from your eyes.
The sound of his voice made you jump, diverting your eyes to look down into your lap straight away. Jake knew where you’d been looking though as he spun around to face you, starting to brush through the knots in his hair where he had washed it.
“I would ask how you are this morning, but I think your smile gives it away,” Jake teased as he took a couple of steps forward towards the bed, perching down on the end of it. “It looks like you’ve woken up in a good mood this morning, am I right?”
Your head nodded back to Jake, unable to bring yourself to talk. You knew if you did, your voice would falter and give Jake the reaction that he was searching for from you.
“Are you ready to head out and explore today?” He then asked you, shuffling himself a little higher up the bed to sit closer towards you. He reached out with his empty hand and rested it against your leg, squeezing against you gently.
The corners of your mouth turned up again as he did so, refusing to look Jake in the eye. You knew the moment you met his bright eyes, your heart would race, and with that you’d likely lose all control of yourself at the same time too.
Jake wasn’t prepared to stop though, tickling against you until finally you cleared your throat. “I’m ready to explore,” you told him, trying your best to wriggle out of Jake’s grip, but he was far too strong beside you.
“Really? Because right now you look as if you want to stay in this hotel room,” he teased.
“I’m not going to let you tease me like this first thing in the morning.”
“Alright,” Jake replied to you, “I guess in that case I’ll go and get dressed before I dry my hair.”
As he went to get off of the bed, your hand pulled him back down, shaking your head at how well Jake knew you. It was what he expected from you, but he still couldn’t help but laugh at how quickly you reacted to what he said.
“Maybe you should get dressed after doing your hair,” you suggested.
His eyes rolled as he stood up and headed back to the mirror, burying through his suitcase to try and find his hairdryer. Once he had it out, he plugged it in, but didn’t turn it on just yet, instead he turned around to face you once again.
“You’re still staring,” he joked, catching your eyes looking in his direction as soon as he looked around, “do you plan on staring at me all day long today?”
“I wouldn’t mind doing it,” you nervously smiled back across to Jake as he brushed through his hair once again. “It’s been a long time since we got to do anything like this together, even just seeing you in the morning feels like a moment where I need to be pinched to make sure that it’s real.”
Jake couldn’t argue with you, it had been a long time since the two of you had had a day off together. To spend it around the world too, in a place that you didn’t know which would allow you to make so many memories was the perfect ending for you both too.
His eyes couldn’t help but look back over at you too, understanding exactly how you felt as you stared at him, happy to not be alone in the morning for just once.
Suddenly the tables felt as if they’d flipped as Jake watched you scroll back through your phone again whilst you waited for him to turn his hairdryer on. “I love being here with you,” he suddenly told you, bringing your eyes up to look across at him again.
Your smile was instinctive as you met his eyes, “I love being here with you too, I’m glad that whichever manager you asked to bring me on tour agreed to let me come.”
“I couldn’t imagine doing this without you,” Jake then added, “these are moments that you’re supposed to share with the ones that mean the most to you.”
“You mean getting ready in a random hotel in the city?”
A chuckle came from him as Jake shook his head, “no, silly, I mean getting to travel the world and see new places.”
You certainly felt lucky, not just to be able to look out the window of your room and see an incredible city waiting for you, but also to be there with Jake and have the chance to watch him achieve his dreams.
“Have you got any plans for where we can go today?” You asked him as he placed his hairbrush down on the table once again.
“I was thinking about just seeing where the day takes us,” he replied with a grin.
Your head nodded at his suggestion, trusting that whatever Jake chose to do would be perfect. “I guess if we’ve got an adventure waiting for us, I can’t stay in bed all day and stare at you,” you smiled, pushing the duvet back.
“Don’t you want to watch me dry my hair?” Jake teased as he picked up his hairdryer, watching you pull the duvet back over yourself again.
You promised yourself that once Jake had dried his hair, you’d get up. As he got dressed, you’d get yourself sorted, but you couldn’t deny yourself one last treat before Jake got himself dressed and ready for the day.
“I’ll stay just for that,” you smiled, “and then I really will get ready.”
“I’ll be quick, so you can’t stare for too long.”

The gentle breeze of the air conditioner softly filled the room. The nightstand lamp slightly dims, the bedroom still dominated with darkness for the minimum source of lighting shining throughout the room, just as it is on the night sky outside. The slow rhythm of Daniel Caesar songs almost inaudibly plays on the background, anyone can probably fall asleep with this kind of ambience. Your eyes drooped half, sleepiness almost got you wholly. Almost slipping yourself to dreamland, your boyfriend’s chuckle brings you back to full consciousness.
“Babe.” Jake said. Rubbing your eyes, your blurry vision then landed on your laptop right in front of you. Jake, through Skype, smiled at you for almost falling asleep, his gaze falling back down to his unfinished assignment.
“Go to sleep if you’re tired…” Jake continued, not taking his eyes off the paper on his table. You yawned, stretching your limbs before turning your attention back towards Jake’s face on the screen.
“I’m good…” Despite being obvious enough of how worn out and sleepy you looked and sounded, you just miss Jake so much, and would risk staying up all night just for a good company – a good company from miles away.
Jake heaved out a sigh, dropping his pencil to his study table. He then pressed his lips to a small smile, “Sweetheart…”
Almost immediately you frowned. Jake had noticed, how you would literally set your rest time aside just to talk to him, or force yourself to stay up all night while he does his never-ending mind-screwing assignments on the daylight where he lives at. And with that tone, with that hint of authoritative note, you knew he’s forcing you to sleep.
“We’ll talk again tomorrow, okay? You still have things to do tomorrow.” softly Jake said, you know ‘no’ is not an option now.
You huffed out a sigh, forcing out a smile before delivering sweet good-night reminders to Jake, and eventually ending the call. Falling back to your bed, angry tears started forming on your eyes. Not angry to Jake, but this whole situation you had to face right now. You hated this. You hated how it all changes so suddenly. You hated how you don’t have Jake by your side like you used to. Having to fight the feeling of longing for approximately another couple of years. You hate it – you hate having him so far away.
Long distance relationships were never easy, those who thought either way would either be lying, or trust their partners with all of their life and soul, also can handle the concept of having their bodies separated for miles and miles away. You do trust Jake, with your life and soul, trust how he would respect and love you as much as you respect and love him. It’s just the idea of having him thousands of miles away that bothers you. Usually glued to each other whenever having each other on company, how would you feel if all the touches, kisses, and hugs alternates to only seeing each other via screen?
High-school sweethearts would be the perfect title describing you both, going through freshmen to senior year having each other; three high school dance photos of you and Jake throughout the years securely framed on your study desk. Jake was your first love, and you do hope he would be your forever too. Jake owns your heart, and you wholly in a good way. You were drowned in love, so does Jake. Almost the whole student population at school knows you both, and even said to be the textbook healthy high school relationship everyone dreamt about – it was great.
Jake was the dream boyfriend. Though not a perfect way to describe a perfect dream boyfriend as people has their own respective taste and standards, but at least he’s your dream boyfriend. The man of your dreams, the one you had been manifesting for your whole life. Gentleman Jake with his soft-spoken words and gentle touches, always respectful and showering you with an adequate amount of love. A lucky strike, a million year worth of luck, you just hit a jackpot upon finding someone like Jake.
Of all things you love about Jake, there’s one thing you hate about him; he doesn’t really communicate things that will potentially lead the both of you to a fight. Eventually by the end of the day, the things he hid will be brought to the daylight by you finding out about it yourself, it then turns to a fight too. Indeed making up with each other at the end too, but it just happens a lot. And when you said a lot, it is a lot, and almost had the both of you breaking up too.
Jake was planned on being sent away abroad to continue his studies by his parents. That shouldn’t sound bad of course, good for him, getting good educations and reaching his dream ahead. Except it was all so sudden, when he had enrolled for college, getting to his dream major. Jake was upset, even refused to leave his room for a couple of days as his parents didn’t actually give him an option. At that time, he do think his feelings don’t matter, and he had other problem to worry about. The problem and only problem was; he had promised to go to the same college as you.
You surely won’t make much of a big deal knowing your boyfriend had different plans with you for his studies. It’s just the both of you got accepted together, and already planned for things ahead, then Jake didn’t even tell you that his parents made a sudden change of plan of sending him abroad. So all the moment he spent getting (pretentiously) excited on hearing you talk about all the plans the both of you would be doing ahead was just a lie. His smiley face and reactions hid his anxiety deep inside him for anticipation of the upcoming fight that will occur between the both of you.
The day then came. Nine days away from his departure, Jake finally had the guts to tell you. You were mad, just like how he expected. Of course, you had all the rights to be mad. Mad for him lying, mad for him pretending all this time, mad for him for not respecting you, mad for him still having the same problem of not communicating things, then for some split days you don’t want to see his face, although it’s only a matter of days before Jake leaves the country. Your friends were upset upon hearing how sudden it was, even his friends too, they all thought Jake doesn’t respect you. Jake was practically helpless back then. Could’ve been a better situation if Jake told this way earlier.
Jake thanked the God and the universe, as he thought the fight occurring between the both of you would most likely lead to a breakup. But no. Despite the deep disappointment and upset rooting deep down your soul, you decided to call the anger a quit and finally have a talk with Jake. Jake couldn’t shake the overwhelming guilt off his shoulder. How can he? It’s a miracle you forgave him and decided to spend the last days with him before he leaves. It’s irreversible indeed, and Jake almost risked losing you thanks to his dishonesty, and it shall remain a lesson for him to not do it again in the future.
“I’m sorry…” Jake whispered, in the midst of his silent sobbing and you in his tight hug.
“For being dishonest and blowing off the plan for us.” Jake continued. Pulling away from the hug, wiping his tears away and cupped your cheeks with both his hands.
“I’ll be back as soon as you can ever expect.” gently, your tears he wiped away. With a small soft kiss on your lips and another final hug; Jake then walked away to the boarding gate.
The transition of having to talk and see each other only via screen and virtual wasn’t easy. It’s used to be an everyday thing for you and Jake being so close glued to each other. Practically inches away, now miles and miles away. Moreover with different time zones on each other’s countries, sometimes your schedules just doesn’t align with Jake. Not a rare occasion too to see Jake, on his assignment while the golden sun shone beautifully to his skin, while you were fighting the sleepiness trying to win you any way you could. Then by the end, failed, as Jake will force you to go to sleep.
‎‎ ‎
“How many miles between us?”
“Approximately 4,000 miles.”
‎ ‎ㅤ
A relatively weird way to cope indeed, but at least it worked on both you and Jake. Whenever the call has to come to an end, let it be either you or Jake having to go to campus, or when Jake pushed you to get some rest, it’s a mandatory question to ask. To joke about. Even though thanks to how often it was asked, you and Jake came to memorize the answer already, but still, a habit slash tradition if you could say.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ.           .           .
“Thank you!” the young boy chimed upon receiving his change, struggling to put the coins inside of his pants pocket, while his right hand held on the yellow flower bouquet he had just bought recently. He said it was his mom’s birthday, and he wanted to buy her daisies with the money he had been saving for a week.
“Oh! Be careful!” You warned, with a huge smile in awe from behind the counter as he successfully kept his change inside of his pocket. Waving to you, he then walked outside the shop. Karina, your co-worker opening the glass door for him along with a huge smile in awe, watching the little feet walking further and further away from the store.
Life is pretty good for you lately. Projects and assignments with good outcomes, good friends, somehow getting your relationship with Jake more stable despite the distance separating you both, and a job as a florist at a nearby flower shop that gives you good extra pocket money; what can be asked for more?
“(Name)!” Karina called out, with her unusual aegyo voice and her little jumpy steps towards the counter. With a hand on your chin, you playfully rolled your eyes to her, knowing she must have a favor on her shoulder knowing she doesn’t speak cutesy on daily basis.
“Can you cover me up for a bit?” whispered Karina, knowing there’s not much of use to lower your voice as the shop’s basically empty for now.
“Boyfriend?” You guessed out. Karina gave out a grin, reaching out for your hand and lightly bounced up and down, probably trying to melt your heart with just a little hint of cuteness.
“Ugh, disgusting. Just go!” You jokingly said. Karina giggled at your reaction, thanking you repeatedly before taking her apron off. She then skipped out of the store, to go wherever it is as she had probably arranged a rendezvous with her boyfriend, Hangyul. In the middle of a shift. You’d be upset if this was someone else, but Karina’s been such a fairy god mother to you, handing you lots of helps and guidance ever since you started working here and there’s no way you would feel upset just for a little bit request from her.
Ha, but having a boyfriend who’s not miles away? Must be nice.
It was lonely and empty. Once Karina left and the shop being empty right now, there’s pretty much nothing you can do. Well, there’s usually another co-worker of yours, Beomgyu, who unfortunately called in sick today as it’s only you and Karina for the evening shift. Once in a while did people slowed down their pace walking past the flower shop, which you greeted with a smile and a welcome greet in hopes that would at least reel them inside, each one of them just walked away. You huffed your cheeks in boredom, continuously looking at your phone to check on the time. 40 minutes away until your shift ends and Sunoo will fill in for the next shift, you can do this.
A loud voice erupts. So loud and sudden in the midst of silence, you jumped in surprise. Clutching the thumping heart over your chest, you reached out to your phone, which was the source of the loud erupting ringtone earlier. Reading the caller ID, a smile formed on your lips as you read your boyfriend’s name was on display. He almost never calls at this hour, what’s the catch? But what the hell, you always missed him anyways.
“Jake!” You started the phone call cheerfully. A good thing the shop’s empty now, as you can kill the 40 minute talking with Jake.
“Hi, sweetheart.” Jake said, with the usual warm and soothing voice of his, “I miss you.”
You chuckled on his words, “I miss you more.”
Then like a usual phone call it is. Jake talking about his studies and how he’s doing there, while you just nodded and attentively listen, your hands fiddling with the pen on the counter, just to get a hold on something. Jake had told you before, he’s on a break, but he might need to take extra classes so he’s not sure if he can be back. That’s fine with you, though you missed him too much, but best for him to prioritize what he needs the most. Then back with Jake’s ramble: asshole lecturers, new friends, how he almost burnt the whole dormitory down this morning just trying to cook hash brown for breakfast. Stupid, you think, for the third story, but it’s funny too, you laughed out loud upon hearing him ranting with that giggly tone of his.
The glass door opened, as your attention automatically alternates there, Sunoo had arrived a lot earlier before his shift. Waving him hello, he then waved back at you with a smile, going to the back room to put his stuffs.
“Hey, can you help me?” Sunoo whispered, completely aware that you’re on a phone call therefore minimizing any probability of interference. A comfortable silence it was on the call as Jake said he was driving on his way somewhere but still wanting to stay in line, and you’re pretty much still on your shift, so of course you hurriedly moved to help Sunoo.
It seemed like Karina has her focus somewhere else today, as the manager had dropped new stocks for flowers and vases earlier on the back room and she didn’t tell you anything for the hours of shift. Instead of venting your upset feeling on how ignorant she was today, you decided to put the energy to good use, as you started organizing the flowers and vases on display, while having your phone squished between your cheek and shoulder.
“Hey, sorry for the silence.” Jake broke the silence, clearly hearing the car door slamming shut as you can guess he has arrived on wherever his destination was. You nodded, placing the fresh daisies to the vase.
“S’okay… I’m still organizing flowers.” You mumbled. You can hear Jake nodding, as it was another silence filling the phone call. Still busy organizing the flowers, you of course don’t mind. A few more flowers and vases did you organized, without you realizing, everything was done and it’s time to call your shift a day. You were about to end the phone call, going to continue the phone call at home yet Jake was fast enough to talk first.
“Can you guess something?” Jake asked, you raised your eyebrow in confusion, wiping your wet hands to your work apron, but proceeded on answering anyways, “What?”
“How many miles between us now?” You chuckled upon his question. Jake probably has something to do now therefore saying the ‘mandatory’ question whenever the call is near an end.
“As per usual…” you paused, getting a hold of your phone back, “Around 4,000 miles?” you guessed.
You can hear Jake chuckling slightly from the end of the line, raising your eyebrows back in confusion upon hearing his answer, “Wrong…”
“Then how many?” You asked, walking towards the counter. If the last answer Jake said made you raise your eyebrow in confusion, his next answer made your heart thump; confused and surprised all mixed down in you.
“Probably 0 miles by now.” said Jake. Your mouth gaped in confusion, bewildered with what Jake had just stated. Is he even joking? Though you can answer that yourself; Jake doesn’t joke nor blabber nonsense like this, all these years the both of you dated. This must be serious… but what even?
“Wha—”
“Turn around.”
Turning around to the glass door, your eyes captured the figure of your boyfriend standing outside the shop with the biggest smile on his face. The smile you had been longing to see face to face. The smile you think about 24/7 all day all night, before going to sleep, and after waking up. The smile you hadn’t seen for painfully too long. Frozen in surprise, but your heart beats faster than a marathon, tears of joy filled your eyes as whining crying sounds started escaping your lips. Your mind kind of fuzzes as you started bombing yourself with reality check questions – is this even real?
“Jake…” You cried out, cupping your mouth to prevent more embarrassing crying sounds escaping your lips. Instead of comforting you, Jake laughed seeing your reaction. Not moving an inch, he then extended his left arm wide as his right hand still holds his phone by his ear.
“Don’t just stand there.” Jake laughed, “Come give me a hug, sweetheart. I miss you too much.”

the sun beams down on you from above as you walk through the somewhat empty park. trees occasionally line the edges of the sidewalk, providing a small reprieve from the sweltering sydney heat. your dog trails happily alongside you. he pants as he happily trots along the sidewalk a little ahead of you, occasionally glancing over his shoulder, as if to check that you’re still following behind him.
“layla!” you jump a little as a man yells out her name before a medium-sized dog suddenly rushes towards you. her leash tangles around your legs as she excitedly circles around you. your own dog rushes back to your side, cautiously approaching the dog rubbing her body against your legs. “oh my gosh, i’m so sorry.” the dog - layla’s - owner is a young man. he has an apologetic smile as he walks over to you. his hair frames his face nicely. he’s wearing a loose fitted t-shirt and a pair of oversized jeans.
“it’s okay,” you laugh. layla happily pants as her owner kneels down beside you to help carefully untangle the leash from around your legs. you call your own dog over as he cautiously approaches to sniff at her. she reciprocates for a second before turning her attention back to you. “i’m y/n.”
“jake,” he smiles. “and this is layla.” she eagerly steps forwards, sniffing you for a moment before licking your face. you laugh as she does, running your hands against the soft fur of her ears. “i’m sorry, again,” jake chuckles as he runs a hand through his hair. “she’s a little too friendly sometimes.”
“don’t worry about it,” you shake your head, watching as your own dog approaches jake. he looks to you for confirmation before you nod. “you can pet him. he’s a little standoffish at first but he loves the attention.”
jake kneels down on the ground next to you, letting your dog sniff at his hand before he slowly raises it to brush against his fur. layla excitedly weaves her way back to him.
you brush the dirt off your knees as you get back onto your feet before holding a hand out to jake. he accepts the help with a grateful smile as he wrangles layla back to his side. “are you feeling okay? you didn’t hit the ground too hard or anything?”
“i’m fine,” you nod. “seriously. besides, it’s always a good day when you get to meet a cute boy and a cute dog at the same time.” you can’t help the smile that grows across your face when jake’s face immediately flushes a bright red. he looks down at layla who simply continues staring at you.
“well, i can say the same, then,” he finally smiles when he looks back up at you.
you let out a small laugh, shaking your head before you look back up at him. “can i have your number, then? since you think i’m a cute boy, and all.”
jake laughs as he nods. you smile when you notice his face flushing a darker shade of pink as he pulls out his phone. you type your number into the device quickly before handing it back to him. your own phone chiming in your pocket gives you confirmation that the string of digits you added to his contacts list was correct.
“hey, there’s a dog park around here, i’d love it if you and layla would come with us.” layla’s tail immediately begins wagging at the mention of her name. she stands up, nudging jake’s leg with her nose as she looks up at him expectantly. you chuckle as her reaction spurs one in your own dog.
“we would love to join you,” jake smiles. the blush on his face has slowly disappeared, but you notice that his ears are still tinted a light pink.
you kneel down to reattach your dog’s leash to his collar. he excitedly wags his tail along with layla as you stand back up, gesturing somewhere to the left. “it’s this way.”

[4:30PM]
Y/n: Why am I kinda nervous? or excited? or anxious?
Yunjin: You're out of practice ahah.
Y/n: Don't say thaaaat!
NingNing: Girls this is important, out of practice or not it's a big deal!!! One of us is getting some development in the romance department!!
Yunjin: Okay she's definitely more excited than you are ahah.
Y/n: He told me to bring a jacket so we're going somewhere chilly I think.
Ningning: Do not worry I will make you look the absolute cutest and comfy of course. Let's go to my room my closet is better.
[6:30PM]
You had one hour left and you didn't know what to do with your time. You were fully ready, the girls had headed to the gym and there you were alone with your thoughts. The reason why Yunjin joked you were out of practice it's actually because it's true. Not many people know about your last relationship but the ones that do saw how much of a toll it took on you. You promised yourself you wouldn't put yourself through such pain again.
Obviously you've had your fair share of flirtatious moments here and there but nothing ever bloomed from that. But Jake did make it easy to like him, he's sweet, funny, really really smart and extremely pretty as well. When he came to your house to drop off your airpods you felt something you haven't in a long time. A certain fuzyness or butterflies or whatever people like to call it. Part of you was excited to have a new crush but the other was scared of all the possible outcomes. What if it goes wrong? What if it's a bet? What if he's using you?
Suffering with hypothetical situations was your specialty but you didn't take pride in it. You want to protect yourself so much you end up hurting yourself in the process. You know this does more harm than good but it is quite hard to leave such habit when you've had it all your life.
The sound of a notification broke your thought process and you took it from your lap to read the text. It was Jake saying he was waiting outside. You look at the time and 7:20pm. You could've sworn only 5 minutes had passed but you were happy he saved you from your own thoughts.
You got up, not forgetting your bag and stepped outside. It was colder than any of your stylists had predicted and you made a mental note to tell them a skirt wasn't a smart move. You were very happy with how you looked, it's been way too long since you really dressed up.
Carefully, you crossed the street, opening the car door to get in. You made yourself comfortable and thanked jake in your head for having the heating on.
Jake: I see you brought a jacket, I'm kinda sad about it.
Ah yes he's so sad about, like his beautiful smile wasn't on full display.
Y/n: I must say I did have help choosing such a pretty outfit. One day I'll introduce you to my stylists.
Jake: Stylists? You brought the big guns, am I really that special?
Y/n: Wouldnt you like to know that ahha just drive.
[9:00PM]
Y/n: It was very nice of you to prepare this. It was a beautiful picnic thank you.
Jake: You're welcome. I'm glad you were impressed ahah.
Y/n: Woah there, let's not exagerate cowboy. I'm grateful not impressed ahah.
Jake: And I'm no longer sad since you still needed my jacket.
Y/n: The girls and I shoud've definetely checked the weather the skirt wasn't a brilliant idea.
Jake: I think it was a great idea. You look good and i got to inderectely warm you.
Y/n: I kinda wished it would've been directely.
You were looking at his eyes waiting for maybe a scoff or a laugh but you instead got a expectant look and shy smile. Jake has this "smooth" "everything under control" look all the time so you'd assumed his response would be filled with confidence but instead he looked like a happy puppy. The sight was melting your heart which made you freeze in place and get too much in your head. The only thing that brought you back to reality were his arms around you.
He had sat himself behind you hugging your frame with one arm and the other, rearranging his jacket on your legs so the cool breeze of the beach wouldn't touch your soft skin.
Jake: You could've said it earlier. It would've been my pleasure.
Y/n: I guess I was waiting for you to just do it.
Jake smiled behind you. To him this was the comfirmation he needed. That you were into him as much as he was into you. His heart was skipping so many beats he was hoping you wouldnt notice it since your head was on his chest. He was the happiest guy alive and the luckiest one too.
He soflty kissed your temple, letting you both to enjoy the view infront of you. To you the ocean, and to him, you.

Tumblr media
“We must prepare for the union of Jake and Tani for eclipse!” Mo’at chants. Your people nodding, each member of your clan having a key role for occasions such as festivals, funerals, weddings, and war parties. The crowd begins to slowly dissipate while you and a few people say your last goodbyes. Figures make your peripheral, as you turn to see your parents make their way to you. You gasp, not having seen them in several days since the rescue mission. You throw yourself into their arms. “Mother, father!” You relish in their touch, embracing you. “Ma’ite My daughter.” Your father sings, as your mother rubs your braids. You look to them with melancholy in your eyes, “I guess I’m getting married tonight.” You laugh. They smile awkwardly, with your mother attempting to comfort you, “Ma’Tani, may you find comfort that our Great Mother has chosen you for a reason. She does not make mistakes. This union will be a blessing. Jake Sully is a fine man, and great leader.” Your father nods gently. Jake standing next to you smiles at your mother’s words. The kids now circling in on your group, “Well, we must prepare you for a wedding now huh?” Your mother says stroking your face. “Come children, you may help. Jake we will see you at eclipse.” Your mother says dragging you to her tent with the Sully kids.
Now in your mother and father’s tent, you anxiously sit on the mats stroking Tuk’s braids out of comfort as the rest sit next to you silently. You still haven’t talked to Neteyam about the kiss. You turn to the eldest Sully, his eyes already on you as he sadly smiles your way. You reach out to him, squeezing his hand lovingly. A shared look knowing that the kiss would be your first and last. Your mother turns to you all with garments in her hands. “Who would like to help me dress Tani for such a special day?” Tuk’s ears perk, shooting up with excitement. “Me!” You laugh at her eagerness and turn to Lo’ak who has a smile on his face now. “What do you say Sully?” Trying to get a laugh out of him. He rolls his eyes and pushes your shoulder as you all make your way over to the material. “Just don’t expect me to call you mom anytime soon please.” As he groans. You laugh, for a fleeting moment forgetting the sorrow bursting out of your hearts. Your wedding garments now spread across the table, with Kiri and Tuk gazing at you excitedly. You happily sigh for the first time in days, “Shall we?”
You take one last look in the mirror, as Kiri and your mother adjust the clothing one last time. Green material hugging your body, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. With your head decorated in a red and green feathered headpiece, much like Toruk Makto’s. Your leather headband with bone similar to the one Jake will wear symbolizes the highest status a clan member can attain. You’re about to become royalty among your people. The green mossy material on your body has leaves dangling from the top and loincloth that sways with your movement. You take a step back, and spin for everyone to see. “A true vision my beautiful daughter. I am so happy to see you on this day.” She brings your chin to meet her eyes. You smile to her, then to the Sully kids. The flap opening suddenly causes you to all turn your heads to the source. Mo’at stands in the entrance, “It is time for a celebration, child. We must be off.” She reaches out to you. The Sully kids have now washed off all the funeral paint, you included and walk out the tent. To your surprise Jake is standing outside waiting for you. Your gasp takes you by surprise as your eyes scan his tall muscular physique. Dressed as the mighty Toruk Makto, he adorns the similar headband to yours with leather and bone. Red feathers symbolizing status and sensuality, and his Ikran talon necklace. Your cheeks begin to heat, as he takes your hand in his. “You ready?” You meet his gaze, “Yes, yes I am.”
You and Jake walk together as Mo’at leads the way to your spirit tree with the Sully kids trailing behind you. Your people gathered together, smiling as you walk past them. Happy yips and chants make way to your ears. A happy time among such sorrow, appreciating Eywa’s timing. With both of you mounted on the top of the Spirit tree Mo’at begins to sing asking Eywa to bless this union. Your people chant with your Tsahìk under the purple glow of the spirit tree. You bring your almond amber eyes to Jake’s. A sudden shyness takes over your body, as you feel your breath hitch. The pure spirits now floating around you both, Mo’at yips with happiness. “Our Great Mother has blessed the union of Jake Sully and Tani te Ol’ul Peyral’ite. With this union, Tanywral you will bear the name Tani te Suli Peyral’ite. Now Tsakarem of the Omatikaya. Do you accept your new life Tani, as the mate of Toruk Makto?” You look to her and nod, “Yes.” She turns to Jake, “And do you Jake Sully take Tani as your mate, leading your people as Toruk Makto and Tsakarem?” He looks to you while he says “Yes.” Your heart skips a beat. “You may kiss your mate, now solidifying your new union among our people.” You both slowly lean in, awkwardly realizing your first kiss is in front of your clan, your parents, and the Sully kids, now your children. Your lips gently touch one another, as you melt into the warmth of his skin. He brings his hands to your jaw lightly cupping your face. You hear the cheers, yips and hoots of your people. You slowly break the kiss and smile to one another, looking to your clan. Seeing Max, Norm in the background with the masks smiling teary eyed at you. Your neck turns to the kids, opening your arms to them as they graciously embrace your hug. A blessing among all the sorrow, signifying hope for you and your people.
