Jay and Tim both hide food but for different reasons.

The latter grew up food insecure and as a child never knew when it was safe to eat, and so often squirreled away snacks so no one would find them, or worse, find him eating. Even as an adult over twenty years later now, this is a habit that grips him sometimes, leading to him hiding small bags of chips or crackers in the divot between his bed frame and mattress.

Meanwhile Jay grew up middle class in Alabama, which is a poorer state, and so he wasn't food insecure by any means, but his parents took issue with a lot of his expressly autistic traits, and so would force him to try foods he didn't like and keep away comfort meals. This just led to him being really weird about food and often needing to eat out of sight of other people, so he doesn't feel forced too, combined with him already having food sensitivities and/or even ARFID.

I think during their time together, Tim takes notices this, even as the stress also makes his own bad habits surface again. I think when he gets back from brief gas station or supermarket trips, he tries to pay attention to what Jay will and won't scrounge away without being too obvious, and so he ends up continually get him things he likes, all while not commenting on the behavior at all.

Then, overtime, he will occasionally introduce a new but similar snack. Not to try to make Jay be "healthy," (what society thinks is healthy is often bogus, especially if you're just trying to survive,) but to see if he will like it, to give him variety.

And gradually Jay stops hiding away to eat, growing more and more accustomed to Tim's presence. I think he even eventually starts asking Tim to get him specific foods, or telling him what he thinks of foods.

And it makes Tim feel trusted and giddy but he doesn't let that show, just nodding stoically as he always does to Jay's requests and comments, gently prodding.

I think eventually they would've maybe even gotten to eating meals together, though maybe only if Tim is turned to the side rather than fully facing the table. That's fine though, because it means Jay isn't anxious then, and Tim can just watch him wolf down his meal from the corner of his eyes, feeling so happy that not only Jay likes what he made, but he feels safe with him in the open of their living room.

Jam taking their frustration out on each other. I need those dogs covered in bruises, blood staining their teeth and shirts, hair tussled and Jay's hat lost in the mess they've created. Need their knuckles bloody, scratched, still twitching from their desperate craving to hurt the other. Need Tim's neck red and voice raw from being strangled. Need Jay's head pounding with pain from being slammed against the wall. They should fight.
