Queens, New York (May 27, 2017) - JCAL is proud to present its JCAL International Music Festival on Saturday, June 3rd, 2017, 1pm to 11pm, Jamaica Performing Arts Center (JPAC) 153-10 Jamaica Ave., Jamaica NY, featuring local emerging and established musicians from diverse genres and their friends. Jazz greats Wadada Leo Smith, Nat Adderlery, Jr., Jerome Harris, Pheeroan akLaff, and Vernon Reid will be featured throughout this outdoor and indoor day-long Festival, along with a Q&A with/the Masters, and a culminating Topology Summit Concert. There will be a special presentation by author John Szwed of "The Art of Billie Holiday's Life." A full lineup can be found on the JCAL website http://www.jcal.org.
JCAL International Music Festival Schedule
1:00-6:00pm - Outdoor Performances featuring/ York College Alumni Big Band/Kita P/Eric Lemon Trio/ Slum Suit - FREE
6:00-9:00pm - Q & A with/ the Masters & Special Presentation by John Szwed  - Tickets: $10
9:00-11:00pm - Topology Summit Concert - w/Jerome Harris, Pheeroan akLaff, & Vernon Reid - Tickets: $20  
The Festival starts on Saturday, June 3rd, 2017 with Outdoor Performances from 1pm to 6pm. The Outdoor Lineup begins with Afrikumba Utibe Drummers at 1pm; York College Alumni Big Band at 2pm; Kita P at 4pm; and Carlos Casado of Slum Suit at 5pm. Performances will be followed by a Q&A with the Masters, from 6pm to 9pm, with Wadada Leo Smith and Pheeroan akLaff at 6pm; Nat Adderley Jr. at 7pm; and author John Szwed of The Art of Billie Holiday's Life at 8pm. This will be followed by a headliner culminating with "Topology Summit Concert" from 9pm to 11pm. Nat Adderley Jr. will feature piano trio material and Pheeroan akLaff will lead a quintet to play some of the music of Jerome Harris with whom he shared many recordings and tours with. It will feature firebrand Vernon Reid of Living Colour, Stomu Takeishi, Graham Haynes, Emedin Rivera, and Jerome Harris.
JCAL Executive Director Cathy Hung and Music Curator Pheeroan akLaff wanted to create a cultural experience for Downtown Jamaica residents by bringing well-known musicians to Queens. The Festival is an extension of what JCAL has been developing over the last year and a half with its Jazz Music Series.

About JCAL _Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL), founded in 1972, is a multidisciplinary arts organization based in the diverse community of Southeast Queens. JCAL has historically supported the creation and presentation of art by local, emerging, and established artists.  JCAL devotes its mission to offering quality visual, performing and literary arts, arts education, and artist programs to encourage participation in the arts and to contribute to the cultural enrichment of Queens and the Greater Metropolitan area.  Under JCAL's management is the performance venue (the former First Reformed Dutch Church) Jamaica Performing Arts Center (JPAC), which showcases local and national artists and performers.
JCAL and JPAC are housed in landmark buildings owned by the City of New York and are partially supported with public funds and ongoing general operating support provided through the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs with support from Mayor Bill de Blasio, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, the Queens Delegation of the New York City Council, and New York City Council, Councilmember I. Daneek Miller. JCAL receives programmatic support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and corporate support from the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation and Resort World Casino New York City.
