Feelings Chapter 27
AO3
“They are his own kin.” Her husband says. She holds three month old Fergus close.

“I know but where have they been? He is a quarter of a year old and they are just now coming to meet him.”

“They were grieving Sassanach.” He softly says. He knows she is attached to Fergus in a way only a nursing mam can be. The lad is in his heart too. “They just want to meet him. It doesn’t mean they will take him.”

They can they both know. Their eldest son’s bride has a nursing infant. Fergus can be nurtured at her breast.

“What if they wish too? I know that I was to be to him just a wet nurse but Jamie, he is ours, our son and Julia ‘s brother.”

He knows that is true. Biting his lip, he ponders, his finger moving over his thigh. “Then we shall talk with them, try to make them see he is better off here.”

They arrive an hour later. Mrs. MacDonald is wearing all black. She nods and curtsies but offers no smile. Mr. MacDonald is equally as grim. These dour people can’t have her child, her heart screams.

“Laird and Lady Fraser.” Mr. MacDonald offers.

“Mr. and Mrs. MacDonald.” Jamie nods. “Would you like to meet Fergus?” He lays in a cradle behind them.

“Aye, thank you.”
Claire reaches for him with shaking hands. She blinks her tears away as she lifts him up. Straightened her spine, she turns to face them.

“Mr. and Mrs. MacDonald, meet Fergus.” She forces herself to offer him to them.

Neither reach out to take him. “Thank you Lady Fraser but Mr. MacDonald and I would prefer to exam the child from your arms.”

She looks at this ‘ grandmother ‘. There may be hope that Fergus will remain with them, after all.

They stare into the eyes of the swaddled infant. The room is quiet outside their breaths. The clock chiming the hour startled them all.

“There is nothing of Sara in him. He is all his unknown father.” Mr. MacDonald speaks for them both, “thank you for your care of him. He is a Fraser as far as we are concerned.” He sighs, “Mrs. MacDonald would like to have raised him had we saw our daughter in him. But…”

Claire holds in her glee. She reminds herself that they are dealing with a terrible loss.

“He will be well seen to. Again, we offer our condolences.” She says. Mrs. MacDonald offers a partial smile.

“Your kindness is appreciated, my lady. To take on the care and raising of…” She stops, a handkerchief covering her mouth.

“We thank you. We will be moving to England, us and George and his family. It isn’t  due to your Lairdship. It is just to escape…”

Jamie places his hand on his shoulder. “I fully understand. I pray you find peace.”

The other man nods before escorting his wife out.

Claire falls into the couch behind her, holding Fergus close. Their son, fully now.
