hysterical that people are apparently angry with pokemon rejuvenation for not having a ton of men in the game that “arent villains, dont die halfway in, and arent ren” (paraphrasing an anon here) like barring the fact that thats not even true, man people laugh at how ppl get upset with predominantly male casts where the girls are just love interests or don’t do anything important as “lol sjw bullshit” but shit themselves when its the other way around

Project Hail Mary
Title: Project Hail Mary Author: Andy Weil Audiobook or Physical: Audiobook Star Review: 5/5 Date Read: Jan 15, 2024
Listed Book Summary:
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company. His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone.
Or does he? (Summary From Amazon listing of Book)
Personal Summary:
Waking up with no memories and alone in a space ship in a star system light years away from Earth. Ryland Grace learns, alongside the reader, who he is and why he is here. He is the worlds last shot at survival and he doesn't even know what he is supposed to be doing.
Vague Review
Star Review Breakdown:
Characters: (5/5)Funny and creative with a scientific mind. It was very easy to fall in love and root for these characters in their quest. Worldbuilding: (4/5)Despite being trapped in a space ship for most of the book, the author manages to make the world feel real and alive. It feels realistic and not as claustrophobic as I first would have thought Plot: (5/5) A captivating plot that manages to feel both urgent and drawn out just the right amount. There are a few snags but they are very forgivable and not very distracting. Pacing: (5/5) The pacing is something I haven't seen very often and is very well done. It is very informative without being bogged down with science facts or info dumping. Writing: (4/5) The writing is fresh and easy to follow. The author really puts you in the shoes of the characters. The science aspects of the book are easily accessible and understandable. Recommended To: Beginners in the Sci Fi genre or people who want to start reading Sci Fi but are uneasy about books being dry and technical or difficult to understand. The pacing is quick and light, while retaining a great balance of humor and situational stress. I recommend listening to the Audiobook reading by Ray Porter on Audible. His accents and voice work for the characters are wonderful. Notes: A wonderful little book, one I'm glad to have as my first review. More in depth review below. Spoilers Ahead.
Star Review Deep Breakdown: Characters: Ryland: Ryland is smart and funny. I adore how he tries to problem solve using the scientific method. It is a wonderful little quirk of character that I don't see too often. I think it was a very good choice to have Ryland be a school teacher, it helps to explain some of the scientific information into something that the reader can easily understand. He has a heart of gold and a good sense of humor that helped keep up the mood of the book, despite everything that happens. Rocky: There is so much I can say on Rocky. But most of all, I love him. He is such a unique concept for an alien. I do like how he isn't a scientist like Ryland, it lets the two characters bounce off one another in very fun and humorous ways. I do like how Rocky has a relatively standard level of intelligence, better at some but not all things. I see a lot of aliens in Sci Fi media being portrayed as either super intelligent or as horror movie monsters, so it was refreshing to see an alien who is a very well balanced foil for the human protagonist. It is also explained very well why the alien race has such different levels of intelligence. Worldbuilding: As said before, the way the author wrote helped keep the space ship from seeming too tight or claustrophobic. The world seemed realistic with the science behind how the world might react if the sun where to slowly be eaten. I like how all of the science seemed reasonable and believable and not super far flung future. There are a few bits such as the coma gene, amnesia drug, and how fast Ryland and Rocky learned each others languages, that sort of rocked my belief but it wasn't enough to take me out of the story. It was easy to just brush past it to get to the good bits. I do like how it was set in relatively modern times and not super future. Plot: I love the plot. It is super captivating and never seemed boring. I like how the memories were progressing semi linearly. It lead up to a very good climax with a mix of smaller climaxes that kept me constantly wanting to hear more. Pacing: I like how in the first few chapters we are learning everything alongside Ryland. It was very fun to be learning and realizing things as he was. The pacing was similar to a light jog, nice and quick without dragging or seeming as if it was skipping over bits. Writing: I like the authors voice and will for sure be looking for more of his future work. The writing had just the right amount of science and details to paint a wonderful minds eye picture, while also not being bogged down with extra science just for the sake of it. I liked how accessible the science felt to understand. I could follow along with how reasonable everything sounded and it helped keep me engaged. Other Notes: Absolute banger of a book. Ive already listened to it twice while at work and I cant stop thinking about it. This is a book that I know will stick with me. It will 100% be on my 2024 top 10 list. PROJECT HAIL MARY NOTES
4/5 stars!
I was so surprised (in a good way) that I liked it as much as I did
I would DIE for Rocky
THIS MAN IS PAUL RUDD AND I WILL NOT BE CONVINCED OTHERWISE
The lack of swearing gives me SUCH AN ICK. Just swear like a fucking grown up, my god.
NGL, I was worried during the first chapter or two that the entire book was going to be having to listen to the internal monologuing of *gag* a MAN (ew) waxing poetic about his penis catheter blood and how ‘ripped’ he was after his big snooze but once the apocalypse started apocalypting, I started to come around.
Ryland sounds too much like Rhysand and it unsettles me to my core.
I feel like Ryland and Hank Green would be best pals.
There is SOOO much math/science and I was kind of into it.. except for when I wasn’t.
But seriously, how did the author come up with all this stuff?
Also, Ryland is CONSTANTLY going on about how he’s ‘just a science teacher’ ‘who me? - I’m no one special’ and then goes on to be like the smartest, most intrepid - literal SAVIOR OF THE EARTH.. Like, ‘okay jan, sure’ lol
COULDN’T BE ME - I wouldn’t last one MINUTE in space.
I am TRAUMATIZED from the puking in his space suit part. My NIGHTMARE.
The Grace/Strand dynamic cracks me up.
I did a little happy-dance at the end of chapter 6 because ALIENS - HELL YEAH.
The way it took Ryland and Rocky like only 3 days to communicate. HOW? That’s absolutely insane. ‘Just a science teacher’ my ass.
Strand pulling the ‘I can do whatever the hell I want’ card in court felt a bit too corny, but was also pretty amusing, I guess.
I feel like Ryland and Rocky are twin flames, ngl.
Rocky moving onto the Hail Mary had me giggling. He’s so me.
Did we really need to know that Rocky poops out of his mouth? Like I would have been very content to NOT know that.
The ship getting knocked out of orbit had me STRESSED
Rocky being dead - DEVASTATING. That’s my emotional support Eridian.
HE’S ALIVE!
And then the ship shuts down, like my dudes can NOT catch a break.
I actually love that we find out Ryland said ‘no’ to the mission. I think it makes his character more interesting. His character was a bit too flat at times and I feel like his refusal to do ‘the right thing’ actually humanized and made me more sympathetic to his character.
Every time Rocky would call Ryland his friend, my heart would melt a little.
It was SO BORING without Rocky.
OF COURSE Ryland went back for Rocky. I didn’t doubt him for a minute.. Okay, maybe for a minute.
The Ryland/Rocky reunion had me in my feels, ngl.
The chapter 30/life on Erid ending was absolutely PERFECT. Could not have asked for a better ending. I may or may not have teared up a bit when he went in to go teach the class. DEFINITELY did this book justice. Slay.

SECOND ADVENT SUNDAY I’ve got update if you saw my stories from today, we had to change our plans & went to the A&E in St Mary’s with Rosie, waited there over 5 hours & we went home with no help, no medication & very sad & frustrated. Something Rotten in the Nest
LOCATION: Home of Ryland Greengrass DATE: Jan 19, 1982 @rylandgreen
Ainsley liked to think that she was not someone who was much given to dithering. She liked to have proper research sorted before she took action on an issue, yes, but that wasn’t the same as dithering. And yet, when Ryland Greengrass was returned to the Order, that was precisely what she’d done: she’d dithered.
She didn’t have a very good reason for it, was the worst part. (Ainsley was a witch who liked having reasons.) She had kept her distance because she hadn’t known how she felt, and had balked at confronting the uncertainty of said feelings. Was it guilt, for having erroneously believed he could ever have gone over to the Death Eaters? Or was it suspicions, which had her doubting him still?
What it was, she’d realized, was both -- and the tangled mess of the two contradicting, convoluted emotions was what was keeping her from renewing her ties to her former housemate -- to her friend. Knowing that, she knew that the only way to get answers -- to her feelings and her questions both -- was to go to the source. And that was why she now stood several feet from the boundaries of Ryland’s front lawn, wand in hand, watching a silvery ferret streak toward the house.
“RYLAND!” the patronus shouted in Ainsley’s voice. “IT’S AINSLEY! DROP YOUR WARDS AND LET ME IN BEFORE I HAVE TO START DECONSTRUCTING THEM!”
While Ainsley had a great deal of respect for Dumbledore in general, she didn’t think much of the man’s magical creativity -- except for that little messenger trick he’d adapted from the Patronus Charm. Now that was brilliance. The patronus’s unique magical make-up made it one of the few spells that could safely penetrate every magical ward and blockade yet devised -- and since it was impossible for a patronus to harm anything but the darkest of dark creatures, no one was much inclined to bother devising a way to keep them out. The fact that no one else had yet been known to concoct any additional uses for the things no doubt helped, too; as far as Ainsley knew, no one outside the Order of the Phoenix even suspected that they could be used to send messages, but since they were linked to a person’s direct emotions it was only logical to extrapolate from that to tie them to a person’s thoughts and voice as well, so....
Tumblr media
But she wasn’t here to muse on magical theory. For once. She had other questions that needed answered -- and enough doubts in her heart that the little ferret wavered and evaporated into the early morning mist. Ainsley frowned, but made no move to summon another; the patronus had done its duty. Now all that remained was Ryland’s response...
