And, of course, no Jim Henson exhibit is complete without Muppets from The Muppet Show! This year, I got to see three different Kermit the Frogs, including the original; Rowlf; Statler and Waldorf; a family of Koozbanians; the Swedish Chef; the original Java puppets; Bunsen and Beaker; the Country Trio; Miss Piggy (in her wedding dress from The Muppets Take Manhattan); Zoot; and Scooter. Aside from all the Kermits, I think the Country Trio were my favorites. If they look familiar, you're not mistaken--they're made in the likenesses of Jim Henson, Frank Oz, and Jerry Nelson.

Bonus puppets under the cut include the Beautiful Day monster; a Snowth; You Are My Sunshine; Nigel (The Muppet Show's orchestra conductor); and Wilkins and Wontkins from the Henson-produced series of Wilkins Coffee commercials.

June 6, 2023 at 6:49am PHT: I've recently had this habit of going to the pantry while brushing my teeth. Remember the time when I caught two Asian glossy starling many days ago? Today, I happened to come across these three muppets. I forgot what they are called, but I think these are migratory birds from neighboring countries. Whenever I'm given the opportunity, I only see them in the morning.

This sprang out of a random pair of shoes I drew and a memory of an old Muppet routine.

I feel like it's a matter of them getting more funding and becoming more family-oriented as they reached new audiences, but post season two feels a lot more grounded whereas the first two seasons feel more abstract. By season 3 the sets became more elaborate and less like they would give out if you leaned on them where the earlier seasons more often utilized solid colored sets, gradient backgrounds, and black box, and the puppets themselves seemed to lean toward embodying animals and people when you would see more monsters and unfamiliar creatures in earlier seasons (but of course, neither one was entirely absent throughout the show).

I think a segment that really embodies the early Muppets energy is the Java bit:

The Muppet Show started to find it's footing by the second season and had some of the best episodes in regards to situational comedy in the third season, but I have such a soft spot for the way that the first season gives off the vibe of a surreal public access art performance.

I need more Muppets. So I’m going to share some of my favorites. First up is the dancing slinkies.

Two more gift paintings. The first was more of an experimental one. I LOVE silhouetted style paintings. I think they are gorgeous and have this spectacular way of conveying a story to me. So I tried my hand at it while working on a gift for my mom and I think it came out great.

For the second one, another thing that I love is the Muppets. I love the original show, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, all their movies, and the Dark Crystal. I also got my husband into loving the Muppets. And one of his favorite skits from the original show was “Java”. So that’s what I wanted to paint for him as a gift. It was fun to work on.
