More (Common) Lisp complaints
Because they are like those people selling financial freedom.
Lisp feels so irrelevant in game dev (desktop, non-mobile). C++ dominates this field. Flash successors plenty abound. XNA alternatives all around. Even Java is there. But where is Lisp?
Naughty Dogs
FF7
Kandria
...?
Let's be honest. These are not success stories. These list feels more like they use Lisp because they are extremely familiar with it. The fact that Naughty Dogs used Lisp doesn't mean Lisp is viable - it just means they have built extensive tooling around it; it is their secret sauce, and they will not share it (it is their rice bowl after all). No games or companies (on the Sony platform) before or after them used Lisp in a major way. It is probably not practical.
And furthermore, with the explosion of indie gaming some time ago, no notable Lisp games was released. Lisp is supposed to be the secret weapon for single developers or small teams - yet I see none of it.
On performance, it is said that Lisp can be 1.5-3x performance of C, and there are even claims that it can go faster than C because the compiler + runtime are included. Now, on the "faster than C part", it's quite hard to believe, when Java with tons of engineering work, finds it quite hard to be on par with C.
Now, that being said, I present my pet peeves.
Lisps might need a lot of effort to reach "close-to-C" speed. Java can have moderately decent programmers with low to moderate effort, and produce "close-to-C" speed. That is the true achievement of Java in my opinion. I don't have to be damn fucking smart or spend a lot of time to achieve great performance, memory safety, easy-to-read code, and more, with just higher memory usage. And these days, I suspect it is even lower than SBCL if you limit memory and use parallel GC. That is a feat that is hard to beat.
What about C++? Lisp can reach "close-to-C" speed. There are claims that Lisps can beat C in speed because of compiler + runtime. Those are only claims. C++ has already beat C in performance, with zero overhead, using a poor mans macro (C++ template) https://stackoverflow.com/a/18004168.
On to the word "tooling", Lisp developers consider tooling as the ability to extend the language, create constructs that are simply not possible in other languages. In the rest of the world, tooling means... tooling.
Like the macro LOOP. If this is tooling, then it is a fucking monstrosity. We all have limited mental capacity. If my program is going to have multiple LOOP-like mental usage, well.. fuck me.
Toolings are like.. IDEs. And sometimes they are so damn good it is not even funny. But the most important thing they do is to reduce your mental load, by being as smart as possible. Tooling does the work, you do the coding. I sometimes wonder if IDE users realize you can do 99.9% of the same things with... | Hacker News (ycombinator.com)
And since I like Java, I will just say some things. Java the language is hilariously weak compared to Lisp, but the runtime, ecosystem, tooling, everything far outshines current Lisps. And the Java language are clearly designed by level-headed geniuses - at least they never claim that Java is the best full stop. Well, I consider them geniuses when I read Brian Goetz, Aleksey ShipilĂŤv, or Ron Pressler when it comes to Java.
And while there is a saying that Java needs a state-of-the-art GC because of all the garbage it produces.. well it is also because of this GC that you can have highly performant code with mediocre code, that won't blow your memory.
The funny thing is that from a purely technological point of view, Java (even th... | Hacker News (ycombinator.com)

The Best Programming Languages For Beginners

When choosing the right programming language, itâs essential to consider your goals and career. You want to make sure that you choose a programming language that is both in demand and easy to learn. Python is an ideal choice for beginners because it reads like English and has a simplified syntax. Itâs also versatile and can be used for anything from web development to software development.
Python
Python is a popular general-purpose programming language thatâs easy to learn for beginners and widely used in web development, machine learning, art, automation, and more. It also has a vast community of resources that are available to new programmers.
Java is another widely used programming language, especially for mobile app development. Itâs used at companies of all sizes (including HubSpot!) and is one of the easiest to learn if you want to develop for a variety of platforms.Better is to click here or visit our official website to know about Programming question answer.
C is an older programming language but still a good choice for beginners because itâs more âmachine-levelâ and gives you the lowest-level control over computer hardware. Itâs also the most common base for other languages, like C# and Ruby.
Java
Despite being not as beginner-friendly as Python, Java is a good programming language to start with. It's a general-purpose programming language with a versatile library and free online tutorials.
It's also a cross-platform language, which makes it suitable for mobile and desktop applications. It's the language of choice for Android development and used in a number of enterprise-level software applications.
C is one of the oldest languages and forms the basis for modern languages like Python, Java, and JavaScript. However, it has a low level of abstraction and requires that code is compiled (translated into machine-readable code) before it can be run. This can make it difficult for beginners to understand. Moreover, its syntax can be confusing. But, it's an excellent foundation for more advanced language learning.
Many people are interested in learning programming, but choosing the best language can be intimidating. Luckily, there are plenty of resources to help you get started. You can learn the basics of multiple languages with a coding boot camp, such as the Georgia Tech Coding Boot Camp, which offers a variety of courses including HTML, JavaScript, and jQuery.
Other popular languages include C, which is a general-purpose, compiled language thatâs widely used in back-end software applications like web servers. Python is a versatile programming language thatâs easy to learn for beginners and can be used in any application. Ruby is a dynamic, object-oriented language thatâs commonly implemented using the Rails framework. Its concise syntax and convention-over-configuration approach makes it easier to build and deploy apps.
Perl
Perl is a high-level dynamic general-purpose scripting language. It is popular among system administrators for its text-processing capabilities, specifically its own in-built version of regular expressions. It is also used for web development and GUI programming.
Beginners can start learning the basics of the programming language by following the free online courses offered on Udemy. These courses begin with basic theory and then move on to specific aspects of the language. They include topics such as lists, arrays, and subroutines. They also cover how to handle errors in coding. Perl has a large community of developers, with over 230 local groups, mailing lists and support/discussion websites. It is also open source and supports more than 25,000 extension modules on CPAN. This flexibility makes it an ideal programming language for beginners.
HTML
Computer programming allows us to create the software and applications that make our lives easier, more entertaining, and more efficient. But deciding which language to learn can be a difficult choice for beginners, particularly when there are so many options available.
youtube
Programming languages may seem different on the surface, but they all have similar structures and features. This means that whichever language you choose to learn, youâll be learning important coding concepts that will be applicable to any other languages you might decide to explore later on.
Before deciding which programming language to learn, itâs important to consider your goals and current skill level. Once youâve identified your goals, itâs easy to narrow down your options and find the best programming language for beginners.

It's not just Gen Z and Gen Alpha who I'm worried about as a Software Engineer though. They're trying to take away our tools to build anything and replace them with drag-and-drop GUIs, and I've already been tasked with trying to make the BS they're calling "Anyone Can Make An App" work. Microsoft's entire Power Platform is built on this. They want to avoid individuality or actual features (not bugs!). They want to "eliminate bugs" by forcing you to work in a tiny, infinitesimal space of what you're allowed to do in these new "app builders" instead of having a free range of the app from code to end product. And they claim it's "easier." One example of this was me being the younger programmer (with almost 2 decades under my belt) who was forced to spend four months working in and trying to create something as simple as a Time Off Request App (which is one of their app bases!) in Power Apps to have proof of concept, except all I did was prove that it was a steamy pile of nothing that couldn't work for my high yield company. And it's not just Microsoft that is doing this. iOS and Android have banged out similar "low code" and "no code" options. And don't get me started on using LLMs to do your coding. People are doing it! And releasing apps with it! And they're a freaking nightmare to look at as an engineer who was brought up working in C, C++, Java (plain Java, all these JS Frameworks are gonna collapse and be useless as soon as we figure out what the next big thing is), Python, and even Assembly. I was the last class of Computer Engineering students that was taught Assembly. The lowest-level language they teach at my university now is Java, and it's not even a useful class. It's the kiddie pool like it's always been. I didn't understand anything I was doing until I dropped out after my Junior year, took a community college course, and actually made something from code to finish. it worked, and I could use it. Then, I understood it. This new stuff? They do not want you to know how it works and that is terrifying.
another thought about "gen z and gen alpha don't know how to use computers, just phone apps" is that this is intentionally the direction tech companies have pushed things in, they don't want users to understand anything about the underlying system, they want you to just buy a subscription to a thing and if it doesn't do what you need it to, you just upgrade to the more expensive one. users who look at configuration files are their worst nightmare
#rant#low code#no code#go to hell#app building is currently a cesspool#because so many of them are trying to shove it into little tiny boxes#for no other reason than control#and capitalism#out of credits

Native vs. Cross-Platform vs. Hybrid â What Should You Choose?
When it comes to choosing the right development approach, your decision should align with your product roadmap, team capabilities, and performance expectations. Native development offers the best UX quality and strong scalability, making it ideal for performance-intensive apps â but it comes with higher maintenance needs and moderate development speed. Cross-platform frameworks like Flutter and React Native strike a balance by allowing faster development, lower maintenance, and good scalability, although UX quality may slightly lag behind native builds. On the other hand, hybrid frameworks such as Ionic are fast to develop and easy to maintain but offer limited user experience and only moderate scalability â making them suitable for basic MVPs or internal tools where performance is not critical.
Expert Tip:Â If your app relies on camera, AR, or sensors â go native. For time-to-market and design parity, cross-platform tools like Flutter or React Native offer the best ROI.
What to Look for in Mobile App Development Platforms
When selecting mobile development tools in 2025, top agencies and development teams recommend looking for:
Real-time debugging and emulation support
Comprehensive UI libraries
CI/CD compatibility (e.g., App Center, GitHub Actions)
Easy deployment to Play Store and App Store
Third-party plugin support for maps, payments, authentication, etc.
Final Thoughts
Whether youâre launching a feature-rich Android app, building an enterprise mobile suite, or rapidly shipping a cross-platform MVP â choosing the right development platform in 2025 is key to avoiding unnecessary rework and scaling with confidence.

Top Software Development Skills to Master in 2025 (USA, UK, and Europe)
As the tech landscape evolves rapidly across global hubs like the USA, UK, and Europe, developers are under increasing pressure to stay ahead of the curve. Businesses demand more efficient, scalable, and secure digital solutions than ever before. At the core of this transformation is the growing need for custom software development services, which empower companies to create tailored solutions for unique challenges. To thrive in 2025, developers must equip themselves with a set of advanced skills that align with market demands and emerging technologies. Letâs explore the top software development skills professionals should focus on mastering.
1. Proficiency in AI and Machine Learning
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are no longer niche skillsâtheyâre now essential. In the USA and the UK, AI is being heavily integrated into industries like healthcare, finance, retail, and cybersecurity. Developers who understand ML algorithms, neural networks, and AI model deployment will have a competitive edge.
Mastering platforms like TensorFlow, PyTorch, and tools for natural language processing (NLP) will become increasingly important. European companies are also investing heavily in ethical AI and transparency, so familiarity with responsible AI practices is a plus.
2. Cloud-Native Development
Cloud platforms like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud dominate the tech infrastructure space. Developers must understand how to build, deploy, and maintain cloud-native applications to remain relevant.
In the UK and Germany, hybrid cloud adoption is growing, and in the USA, multi-cloud strategies are becoming standard. Learning serverless computing (e.g., AWS Lambda), containerization with Docker, and orchestration with Kubernetes will be vital for delivering scalable software solutions in 2025.
3. Full-Stack Web Development
The demand for versatile developers continues to grow. In Europe and the USA, companies are seeking professionals who can work across both frontend and backend stacks. Popular frameworks and technologies include:
Frontend: React.js, Vue.js, Svelte
Backend: Node.js, Python (Django/FastAPI), Java (Spring Boot), Ruby on Rails
A deep understanding of APIs, authentication methods (OAuth 2.0, JWT), and performance optimization is also crucial for delivering a seamless user experience.
4. Cybersecurity Knowledge
With the rise in data breaches and stricter regulations like GDPR and CCPA, secure coding practices have become non-negotiable. In 2025, developers must be well-versed in threat modeling, secure APIs, and encryption protocols.
The demand for developers who can write secure code and integrate security into every stage of the development lifecycle (DevSecOps) is particularly high in financial and governmental institutions across Europe and North America.
5. DevOps and CI/CD Expertise
Modern development is no longer just about writing codeâitâs about delivering it efficiently and reliably. DevOps practices bridge the gap between development and operations, enabling continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD).
Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Terraform, and Ansible is critical. In the USA and UK, these practices are embedded in most agile development workflows. Europe is also seeing a surge in demand for DevOps engineers with scripting and automation expertise.

So I heard about a site called bearblog.dev and decided to make an account. What's interesting about it, is that it's not connected to anything like most social media sites are. So really, the only way for people to find you is through word of mouth, or by paying (which tbh I prefer not being on a discover page tbh).
I liked their mission statement, about never wanting to sell, that it's run on donations and no ads, etc. But the biggest plus for me, was how you can customize things!
I haven't remotely worked on my own theme yet, but I poked around the code a bit, and it seems pretty straight forward; so I think I should be okay! Though, I can only play around the css, and not html without being a paid member.
Buuut I have experience though the sheer torture of having to customize everything through just css, so I think I'll manage.xD
I can't work on it rn, as I am finishing up on my Dreamwidth theme, as well as a drawing I need to get done soon.T.T But apparently, you can customize your dashboard!!! And, well, I couldn't resist.xD
This is, again, just the dashboard; so essentially, only I can see this lol. But I needed a break from my other 2 projects, and it seemed easy enough.xD
I definitely didn't go all out; as this is just my writing page. But I still wanted it to be calm yet exciting for me to work in! I chose colours similar to the Tumblr Classic (low contrast) theme, as I use that as my base on AO3 as well.xD (But I did shift the hue lol)
Initially, it was just gonna be solid plain colours but then...whoops! I had fun, and I did learn a few new things~
I had found a few codes a few months ago, and decided to play around with them, and made something new from them aha!
Which, if you would have asked me months ago, I would not have been able to figure out, but I managed to make something work.xD You can't see it here, but the headers have a subtle rainbow animation.:-P And when you hover over the boxes, they pop up, and have an animated rainbow shadow! Oh, and all links appear white, but when hovered, have animated rainbow on the text.:-) Yes, lots of rainbow!xD
Which like, technically these have been done in the past; but required Java Script back then. Now, they can be done through css only!:-D (Which was super helpful, since I can only play around with the css lol)
I could not install custom fonts, so went with a browser standard. I think for journal themes, it should work? But dashboard seems like a no go! (Idk tho, I'd have to test!)
Also, not very noticeable in the screenshot, but the body has a blur effect, so anything behind it will make it blur.:-)
And yes, couldn't resist adding Ranka.xD She makes me happy!
Also, yes, this is very busy for most. But I made it for me. The spacey background makes me feel calm and a bit nostalgic over some themes I had made in the past, or of other sites I enjoyed browsing. The rainbow is subtle, not too annoying; but still sparks something fun for me! The colours for the body do well for my eyes as I type/edit stuff, which is what I wanted. And having a character I love in the bg/cursor (which you can't see here either) is just a nice bonus aha~
There are still some very minor bugs I need to fix, but that will be for another time. I would like to make this code public eventually, but not sure how or where, or if anyone would actually want to use it.xD I'm thinking once I have an ACTUAL site one day, I'll post it there?
So uh yea, I'm working on a Dreamwidth, I have a Tumblr already; so why the fuck would I want another blogging platform?xD
A few reasons, which I feel like I've already kind of mentioned here lol. But another big reason, is I do enjoy having multiple spaces for different purposes if that makes sense? I like the idea of having Tumblr for whatever the fuck I do here.xD And Dreamwidth for more art and fandom related stuff (and maybe a few other stuff; but definitely long form posts; idk yet, I still haven't tested the waters. But think art/fandom blogging, mainly). And maybe a bearblog for more mmm...personal or intimate entries. Stuff I don't want too many eyes or engagement on.
Like, yea sure I could keep certain thoughts to myself. But I find myself always afraid of sharing thoughts, feelings, or ideas in my own spaces (I have soooo many drafts). Perhaps of fear of being "too much" or making someone mad; but I feel like I should learn to being okay being me, having opinions or thoughts on stuff, to be able to even change over time, and not worry about an algorithm showing it to the wrong person, ya feel?
And yea, I just want another site to test out coding/design without committing to having my own site again JUST YET lol. (I SWEAR I'll make one eventually...I'm just intimidated + unsure of which host to choose lol)
So yup! Uhhh idk when I'll be done all of this lol. I'll definitely finish my Dreamwidth first, which I will announce~! Once that's done, might work on my bearblog, and let you guys know of that.xD

Software Development: Building the Digital Future
In todayâs fast-paced digital world, software development stands as a cornerstone of technological advancement. From mobile applications to complex enterprise systems, software development shapes how we work, communicate, shop, and entertain ourselves. But what exactly is software development, and why is it so crucial in the modern era?
What is Software Development?
Software development is the process of designing, coding, testing, and maintaining applications or systems that run on computers or other electronic devices. It encompasses a variety of disciplines, including software engineering, programming, project management, user experience (UX) design, and quality assurance (QA).
The goal of software development is to create efficient, scalable, and user-friendly programs that solve real-world problems or fulfill specific needs. Whether itâs an accounting tool for businesses, a video game for entertainment, or a healthcare management system for hospitals â software developers are behind the creation of these digital solutions.
The Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
A structured approach to software creation is essential to ensure quality and efficiency. This is where the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) comes into play. SDLC consists of several phases:
Requirement Analysis: Understanding the clientâs needs and defining the scope of the project.
Design: Creating architecture and user interface designs based on the requirements.
Implementation (Coding): Writing the actual code using programming languages like Python, JavaScript, Java, C#, etc.
Testing: Verifying that the software is free of bugs and performs as expected.
Deployment: Releasing the software for use in a live environment.
Maintenance: Regular updates and fixes after deployment to improve performance or add features.
This process helps ensure that the software meets user expectations, is delivered on time, and functions reliably.
Popular Software Development Methodologies
There are several methodologies used in software development, each with its own approach to managing and executing projects:
Waterfall: A linear, sequential method where each phase must be completed before the next begins.
Agile: A flexible, iterative approach that emphasizes collaboration, customer feedback, and continuous improvement.
Scrum: A type of Agile methodology where development is broken down into time-boxed iterations called sprints.
DevOps: Focuses on unifying software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) to deliver high-quality software faster.
Among these, Agile has gained the most popularity due to its adaptability and focus on delivering value to the end user.
Discover the Full Guide Now
Programming Languages and Tools
Software development involves a wide array of programming languages and tools, chosen based on the projectâs requirements:
Front-End Development: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Angular.
Back-End Development: Node.js, Python, Ruby, Java, .NET.
Mobile Development: Swift (iOS), Kotlin (Android), Flutter, Xamarin.
Databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Oracle.
Development Tools: Git, Docker, Jenkins, Visual Studio Code, JIRA.
These tools help developers build robust applications, manage code efficiently, and automate testing and deployment.
Trends Shaping the Future of Software Development
The field of software development is constantly evolving, driven by new technologies and user demands. Here are some current and emerging trends:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML): Integrating intelligent features such as chatbots, recommendation systems, and predictive analytics.
Cloud Computing: Building scalable, flexible, and cost-effective software solutions using platforms like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.
Low-Code/No-Code Platforms: Enabling non-developers to create simple applications with minimal coding knowledge.
Cybersecurity: Increasing emphasis on building secure applications due to growing digital threats.
Internet of Things (IoT): Developing software to manage interconnected devices and smart systems.
These trends not only enhance the capabilities of software but also redefine how developers approach design and functionality.
The Role of a Software Developer
Software developers are problem solvers, creators, and innovators. They analyze requirements, write efficient code, and collaborate with other stakeholders like designers, testers, and project managers. Apart from technical skills, soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability are equally important in this field.
Continuous learning is also a key aspect of being a software developer. With new frameworks, libraries, and technologies emerging regularly, developers must keep their skills up-to-date to remain competitive and relevant.

How Do You Choose the Right Tech Stack for Android App Development?
Several possibilities exist when choosing between a tech stack and tools. To give you a glimpse: the wrong choice of tech stack will result in issues in your software development performance, scalability, delivery time, and long-term maintenance. Both businesses and developers must learn what makes up a tech stack and how they can make informed choices because this knowledge will affect the final outcome's success.
So what are some of the factors on which the appropriate tech stack for Android app development depends?
Understand What a Tech Stack Includes
A tech stack refers to the set of programming languages, frameworks, libraries, tools, and technologies used to build a software application. For Android app development, the tech stack usually includes:
Programming Language: Kotlin and Java are two widely used languages to develop native Android applications. Kotlin is becoming the choice among developers when it comes to modern apps due to its concise syntax and full interoperability with Java. The language choice generally defines if we are going to build a native or cross-platform app.
Development Tools: Android Studio is Google-supported IDE, and it provides a full environment for code editing, debugging, and testing.
UI Frameworks: Jetpack Compose is the newer-native approach to Android UI designing replacing the older method based on XML layouts working with a much more dynamic and declarative approach.
Backend Technologies: This would usually depend upon requirements, and thus Node.js; Python with the Django framework; Ruby on Rails; or Java with Spring Boot would be considered.
Databases: SQLite, Firebase Realtime Database, or Room can be used for local and cloud storage.
API and Cloud Services: Third-party API integration and Google Cloud and AWS would present even more options for further enhancing the functionality and performance of the application.Â
Define Your App Requirements Clearly
Before you select the technology stack for development, be sure to keep your project's functional and technical requirements clear. Ask and answer the following:
What type of app is this: a simple or a complex one?
Will it have real-time features such as messaging or geolocation?
What kind of performance and scalability is demanded?
What are the security and compliance requirements?
If the application has demanding requirements such as performance, low latency, and intensive processing, native development with Kotlin might be your choice. For applications with less demanding requirements or tighter budgets, going with hybrid frameworks such as Flutter or React Native (although technically a cross-platform one) is the best choice.
Consider Development Time and Budget
Your budget and timeline are other important parameters in this regard. Some technologies may present quick development cycles, while others might just add to the complexity and therefore the cost. Kotlin, on the other hand, is very efficient but may require developers with more experience. Firebase provides several backend-as-a-service features that drastically cut down developer effort, making it perfect for startups and MVPs.
Also, developing fast should be kept balanced with maintenance in the long run. A tech stack may provide upfront rapid development at the cost of great cost later due to poor scalability.Â
Evaluate Community Support and Documentation
Another positive site of choosing more widely variant technologies is strong community support. Open source libraries and frequent updates, as well as well-maintained extensive documentation, can help solve any hurdle faced during the development phase. For instance, Android Studio, Kotlin, and Jetpack Compose have exceptionally large communities and high-standard documentation maintained by Google and the larger wider developer ecosystem.
Even if third parties need help saying so, the community provides even more third-party tools, plugins, auto-configuration, and standard building blocks that are used to develop your application faster.
Think Long-Term: Scalability and Maintainability
Your tech stack should support the future growth of your app. As your user base increases or your appâs features expand, your technology choices should not limit scalability. Opting for cloud-native backend solutions, modular architecture, and a maintainable codebase will help keep future updates smooth and cost-effective.
Itâs also worth considering how easy it will be for a new developer to pick up and work on the project in the future. Clear documentation, consistent coding practices, and widely adopted tools make long-term maintenance easier.
Conclusion
Choosing the right tech stack for Android app development is a strategic decision that requires careful planning and analysis. By understanding your project requirements, budget, and long-term goals, you can select a set of tools and technologies that support not just developmentâbut also growth and sustainability.
For businesses looking to build custom Android applications tailored to their unique needs, working with experienced professionals can make all the difference.
