Caroline Myss Archetypes: William Bainbridge
His highness adjured that I do him next in which I felt obliged to do.
Tumblr media
From my understanding of William Bainbridge, I perceive him to be the Magical Child, and not because some evil fairy or imp gave his cradle a visit during infancy either. Coming from a sound home and because he had three other brothers, William’s grandfather requested that he raised the young boy sensing great potential in him which the father agreed to. Born in 1774, too young to partake in the great sea battles of John Paul Jones, Stephen Decatur Sr. and John Barry, the tales of these glorious fights was what inspired William to become a mariner. Going from a merchant’s ship to the US Navy when it was created, Bainbridge had high hopes for this establishment and was confident that his seafaring skills would be a major contribution to it. The strangest thing is, it seemed the more dedicated he was to serve the navy, the worse his luck would get as he was the first and second navy captain to surrender his ship to the enemy. William Bainbridge even went on to call himself “The Child of Adversity” and was filled with contempt when his contemporaries namely Stephen Decatur gained laurels from his misfortunes. Towards the end of his life, this quote from a letter Bainbridge sent to a friend sums up his disenchantment with the service he was once committed to full heartedly, “the more I see the world, the more I am confirmed in this belief. Man, instead of being as his Maker intended him to be- the noblest work of God-is a machine, molded by and yielding to, the baseness and groveling of his lowest fellow….I am becoming a misanthrope.”
Tumblr media
Now for the individual archetypes.
First and foremost we’ll start with the King……I mean what else is there to say besides the way William Bainbridge carried himself that his very aura demanded respect! His ship (or Navy Yard) was his kingdom and it would behoove you to follow his orders. His school of sailing was in the cutthroat merchant services and distinguished himself quickly in his teens that he was more than capable to captain a ship and he would do it with an iron fist. If his men didn’t despise William Bainbridge, they at least feared this captain from Princeton New Jersey. He trained his crews so much, so well that that a few fellow captains claimed the crew under Bainbridge was the best they’ve ever seen. Eventually Bainbridge gave a little bit of leeway running his ship but his authority was still there.
After that is the Dilettante. Bainbridge may have been one of if not the most cultured Preble’s Boy. Sure being in the merchant service was a huge factor but William Bainbridge dedicated time and energy dabbling in different subjects that opened many different doors for himself. With so many interests, it was quite easy for him have a long, long list of pen pals. Speaking of pen pals-
What a Networker! It’s great to “know a guy” amirite? Not ideal for this example but when he was a prisoner in Tripoli after the capture of the Philadelphia, the Danish Consul N.C. Nissen was instrumental in making the Captain and officers’ lives bearable by providing books and advocating for treatment on their behalf. A couple of years later after the Americans were released but the Navy got budget cuts, Bainbridge applied for a furlough and went back into the merchant business. On his way to St. Petersburg, Bainbridge was halted at the Danish Sound. The Danish Consul Bainbridge befriended in Tripoli just so happened to be opening a package that contained a fine silver bowl the American Captain sent him. When he heard of Bainbridge’s whereabouts he immediately came through to renew their acquaintanceship. Another example is after his victory of the HMS Java, Bainbridge kept a lifelong correspondence with lieutenant general Hislop; every opportunity in his life, Bainbridge used it to add people to his network.
Mentor. Listen, as long as you don’t piss William Bainbridge off then he’d be more than happy to take you under his wing James Biddle! During their time together in Tripoli the two bonded rather quickly as Biddle saw Bainbridge as a “father figure” (😒🙄). That’s a tactful way to create a “minion” if you ask me. Okay fine. I’m not being fair; Bainbridge did have a lot of knowledge to offer which inspired David Porter to self educate himself in order keep up to par (which turned him into a lifelong student). James Biddle decided to model himself after Bainbridge (consequently having that “aristocrat air” about him).
Thanks to him and Charles Stewart confronting President Madison about utilizing the puny US Navy, that make’s Bainbridge a Visionary. He knew what his brother officers were capable of and at that ball in Washington on December 8th, the then Secretary of the Navy Paul Hamilton shouted “Never forget that it is Captains Bainbridge and Stewart that you really owe these victories!” Should I mention him tampering with Joshua Humphrey’s drafts while building Independence? Not good results but hey, I guess William was opening his mind to new ideas how a ship should sail.
Funny thing about being the Athlete is it matched his King so well. Here’s a description of him from his late teens that basically stayed with him the rest of his life. “At this time Bainbridge looked a good deal older than he was; stood five feet eleven, had enormously broad shoulders and was well muscled like a gorilla.” His physique made it easy to knock mutineers on his merchant ship back in line with his humongous fists. Numerous times. That’s just the physical aspect of it though. An athlete requires discipline; which he gave plenty of. And because he had high expectations of his crew, accomplishments were made. I was actually surprised to find that Bainbridge didn’t know how to swim…
Ever heard someone call another “a thief of joy”? Bainbridge was more than that and let me tell you why. Doesn’t matter who you were as long as you weren’t William’s superior (and he still felt contempt for most), you were absolutely beneath him and therefore deserved to be miserable. His reputation as the “unlucky Captain” did not help the situation either; makes me think of his jealousy of Stephen Decatur. William Bainbridge lacked the charisma and presence that drew admiration from subordinates and contemporaries so his conclusion was get rid of that meddlesome rival be Decatur’s “friend” in the duel that killed him. Worth mentioning that it was Isaac Hull who suggested building boat houses to protect the navy’s vessels not Bainbridge but who got the credit? And he made it nearly impossible for Johnston Blakeley to supply the Wasp of necessities and marines so the younger captain had to make do with what he had and proved to be successful to a tragic end.
If Isaac Hull was the victim of the Vampire, William Bainbridge was the nocturnal creature sucking the life force out. Oh. My. Gosh. You ought to see the “woe is me” letters he wrote to Edward Preble as a prisoner in Tripoli because I can almost guarantee you Commodore Preble looked at the camera as if he was in The Office multiple times! Then the newspaper wars with Isaac Hull Bainbridge was writing letters to his friend David Porter who happened to be on the Board of Commissioners. Listen, if Porter was your friend he would somehow find patience in his otherwise nonexistent well of goodwill and graces but even that well dried up for Bainbridge. This man just needed his “entourage” *glares at Biddle* to stroke his ego and tell him everything will be alright.

6 trans women and non-binary activists you should have learned about in history class. Part 2
1. Sylvia Rivera (1951-2002)
Tumblr media
Born to Puerto Rican and Venezuelan parents in New York in 1951, Sylvia Rivera was an iconic LGBTQ activist. As a child, she was bullied due to “effeminate” behavior. As an adult, Rivera frequented the famous Stonewall Inn and is believed to have been present during the venue’s landmark 1969 Stonewall Riots (though her role in igniting the riotsthis link opens in a new tab remains unclear).
Kicked out of her home more than once, Rivera co-founded STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries), a group dedicated to providing housing and support for homeless queer youth and sex workers in New York City. She also challenged gay rights leadersthis link opens in a new tab who attempted to exclude drag queens and trans people in gay rights legislation, and fought for inclusion for people across the gender spectrum within mainstream LGBTQ organizations and events.
Rivera’s understanding of her gender was fluid, and evolved over the course of her lifetime. Sometimes she identified as a woman. Sometimes she identified as an “effeminate” gay male. Sometimes as both, or as a third gender. But most importantly, we identify her as an important non-binary activist.
2. Marsha P. Johnson (1945-1992)
Tumblr media
Like Rivera, Marsha P. Johnson is an iconic figure of color in queer liberation. Born in New Jersey, Johnson became accustomed to anti-LGBTQ bigotry as a child. In 1967, she moved to the West Village in New York to escape this discrimination. She was present at the legendary Stonewall Riotsthis link opens in a new tab, and is said to have thrown the first brick on that historic evening. After Stonewall, she befriended Rivera, with whom she co-founded the influential LGBTQ support organization STAR.
In the 1980s, Johnson became a tireless AIDS activist, demonstrating with the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Powerthis link opens in a new tab (ACT UP) to help build awareness and lower the prices of AIDS medication. She was everywhere—she even appeared in a series of Andy Warhol photographs featuring drag queens.
But in July 1992, her dead body was pulled, fully clothed, from the Hudson River near Christopher Street. Officials initially claimed the case was a suicide. Johnson’s family and friends disagreed, and charged that she had been murdered, as she had often been harassed by people around the pier. The case was changed from a suicide to “undetermined,”this link opens in a new tab where it remains today, despite having been reopened in 2012.
Johnson, like Rivera, did not fully identify as transfeminine. She often used female pronouns, as did many other drag queens in her circle, and even considered sex reassignment surgery. But she also identified as male, ultimately putting her under a broad, non-binary umbrella.
3. Sir Lady Java (1943—)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For a long time, cross-dressing was banned in much of America, and trans women—who would have simply been dressing—were treated the same as cross-dressers. Sir Lady Java was born in New Orleans, and later moved to Los Angeles where she protested L.A.’s notorious Rule No. 9this link opens in a new tab, which made cross-dressing illegal.
Java, who worked as both a waitress and “female impersonator” at the Redd Foxx Club and who claimed to have dated Sammy Davis, Jr., was profiled in Jet magazinethis link opens in a new tab for her curvaceous beauty and her persistent picketing. Bowing to pressure from the LAPD, which wanted Java’s so-called “cross-dressing” club act stopped, the Redd Foxx Club cancelled her act.
So she joined the ACLUthis link opens in a new tab to argue that the law was unconstitutional and took away her income. Even though her legal challenge ultimately failed, Java’s story received national attention, particularly from African American and queer publications, which likely played a factor in such laws eventually disappearing.
4. Renée Richards (1934-present)
Tumblr media
Born in New York in 1934, Renée Richards worked as an ophthalmologist and professional tennis player. Though she underwent sex reassignment surgery in 1975 and played tennis as a woman without incident that year, in 1976 she was outed by the pressthis link opens in a new tab after a victory at a tennis tournament in California. In response, the U.S. Open introduced a required “genetic” screening for female athletes to bar Richards from playing. So she sued, and in 1977, New York’s Supreme Court ruled in her favor. Thought to be the first transgender woman to play a professional sport, Richards remains one of the most iconic trans athletes.
5. Nong Toom (1981-present)
Tumblr media
A story for the ages: Parinya Charoenphol (better known as Nong Toom) was born to a family of nomads in a poor village in Thailand and was expelled from a monastery as a child. At age 12, she began training to become a Muay Thai kickboxer—and became a champion, winning 20 out of 22 matchesthis link opens in a new tab—so she could afford the extravagant fees of the sex reassignment surgery she’d wanted since she was a child.
In 1999, she underwent surgery and began living full-time as a woman. But Toom quickly became a figure of national controversy for her gender because, at the time, women were prohibited from fighting in kickboxing matches. Having evolved from a way to combat the Burmese to a professional sport, Muay Thai is considered sacrosanct in Thailand, and some argued Toom’s participation in the pastime tarnished it.
Nevertheless, she persisted, and she is an icon for it. “She’s such a person of contradictions,” Ekachai Uekrongtham, the director of a film about her, said in 2005.this link opens in a new tab “She set out to master the most masculine activity in order to achieve total femininity.”
6. Angela Morley (1924-2009)
Tumblr media
Angela Morley stands out not only as a female composer  — itself, unfortunately, relatively rare — but as one of the only openly trans composers anywhere.this link opens in a new tab Born in Yorkshire in 1924, Morley transitioned in 1972 and won two Emmys for her musical arrangements. She was also the first openly trans person to be nominated for an Academy Award. Morley died in 2009, but left an important legacy behind her.

Wilton Manors, Florida
The city is home to a sizable LGBT population as well as winter vacationers, who frequent its many nightclubs and gay-owned businesses along the main street, Wilton Drive; the 2010 U.S. Census reported that it is second only to Provincetown, Massachusetts in the proportion (15%) of gay couples relative to the total population (couples as reported to the U.S. Census).
The Drive becomes a blur of gay commerce - within a few blocks there's Rumors Bar , Progress Bar , a gay burger joint called Rosie's with a gorgeous lanai, a high-end gay sushi and Thai joint called Galanga , a combo nightclub-restaurant with an excitingly labyrinthine layout called The Manor , a gay pool hall, two gay ice cream parlors, and two gay thrift stores.
For example, there is no sign identifying the Sebastian Street Beach as "The Gay Beach," but that's what it is. Just across the street from, and slightly to the north of, the rather fratty outdoor mall called Beach Place, there is a 200- or 300-yard stretch of sand where the blankets are mostly lain upon by same-sex couples, and where the men's bathing suits are mostly of the kind known as "banana hammocks." It's fun to watch the looks of dawning bemusement on the faces of conservative tourists as they realize what they've just wandered into.
Other Wilton Manors parks include Donn Eisele Park, Snook Creek Park and Boat Ramp, and Colohatchee Park, a 9.3 acres (38,000 m2) recreational facility complete with a boardwalk for nature observation, a dog park, and a boat ramp for watercraft entry.
In a single plaza , you'll find the venerable gay bar and restaurant Georgie's Alibi, a clothing store called Gaymart, a gay sushi shop called Tee Jay's , a gay bar called Hunters , a gay coffee shop called Java Boys , and a gay optician's office called Chic Optique.
From the quirky To The Moon Marketplace with its amazing selections of candies and novelties from yesteryear (the candy is fresh; it's just the favorites you bought as a kid but no longer find), home design at Decades , or club clothing at Gay Mart , or two great thrift stores: Poverello and Out of The Closet , plan to spend a day shopping in Wilton Manors You will delight at the options and smile at the service.
A city web page highlights LGBT life in Wilton Manors, stating that "the City of Wilton Manors Police Department conducts police training that is geared toward working with the City's LGBT population and has gay and lesbian officers amongst its ranks." All members of the city commission are LGBT, with the exception of Vice Mayor Scott Newton.
As of 2000, Wilton Manors was the 133rd most Cuban -populated area in the US (tied with Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey ) at 1.58% of the population, while it had the twenty-seventh highest percentage of Haitians in the US, (tied with North Lauderdale and Florida City) at 6.7% of all residents.
Fort Lauderdale's shopping hot spots offer high-end options at the Galleria on Sunrise Boulevard just blocks from the beach, and Sawgrass Mills on West Sunrise Boulevard and Sawgrass Expressway, which happens to be the second most popular tourist attraction in Florida after Disney World.
Known as the Venice of America , Fort Lauderdale is home to over 300 miles of navigable sparkling waterways , which snake through this city and county of one million, and are trafficked with astounding yachts as well as many smaller vessels, each captained by enthusiastic nautical lovers from all over the world.
Another example of the economic revitalization in Wilton Manors is the Highland Estates neighborhood, which is bordered by NE 26th Street on the south, Dixie Highway on the east, the North Fork of the Middle River on the north, and NE 6th Avenue on the west, was significantly transformed in the decade from 1995 - 2005 from a blighted area to an upscale neighborhood with multiple new modern townhouse developments. If you are thinking of relocating to Wilton Manors be sure and find a local Boca Raton Moving Company that can  provide professional service at great rates.

Upper East Side
Coming back from Rome was a reverse culture shock. My roommates moved to a new apartment on the Upper East Side on 65th and 1st, we were on the 1st floor. It’s a quiet neighborhood. This apartment had a spiral staircase that went to the basement where our one roommate stayed. She had her own bathroom and paid a bit more for it. Our other roommate had a room near the kitchen. I ended up living in the living room.
It was spacious but I didn’t have a door and our friend who lived in the basement’s boyfriend at the time knew how to make a wall, from sheet rock. So he built a wall and door that divided us. Our kitchen was the smallest kitchen ever, that us three could not be in it together. The bathroom was the tiniest bathroom as well. It was an old building.
I have a photo of me sitting on top of the refrigerator hanging out. The best part of this apartment was the rooftop in our building as well as the location, Manhattan. Three avenues away from the East River and three avenues away from Central Park. I had my dog Scrappy at the time and both were perfect for him. One of our housemates lived near her college, Hunter. The other housemate lived by her job which was a baby gym, she was a gymnastics teacher. I was happy to live with good friends and have a place after being gone for about 5 months.
My dog scrappy lived there while I was abroad and my roommates took care of him. He gets mad if I leave him but forgives in due time. He’s good at adapting and treating who ever is in front of him like his owner. He would sneak out of my bed and go into my housemate’s bed.
I had a favorite coffee shop called Java girl where I would write. I brought my bike for the first time to the city and was able to ride it from the Upper East down to Financial District,  an easy 30 minute bike ride to school.
I didn’t have a job when I got back, I was willing to bag groceries and do whatever. After a couple weeks my old job on stone street needed a host again. So I was back to making money. I remember being so broke that I couldn’t afford a metro-card ride. One time wanting to hangout with friends, I remember my roommate worked at this amazing vegan spot in Chelsea that doesn’t exist anymore called The Simple Kitchen. We walked from 65th East to a yoga to the people session (which was donation based)  on 37th, then to Simple Kitchen on west 17th (Our friend didn’t charge us), and then a lone I walked back up to East 65th and crashed in bed even though we were supposed to go out. The yoga, the wine, and the walking from East to West to East really killed me. The time I got home, my housemate who closed the restaurant and took train just got home, so it took me the same amount of time walking. The tragedy of not having a bike was real.
I came back to being an assistant pledge mom for our sorority, Sigma Delta Tau, which kept me active. I got the position by sending a video where I said a speech in Rome. Being preoccupied in helping those girls was an awesome reset. I had this fear of missing out but when I got back, all my old sorority friends weren’t involved anymore. I made some new ones. I was still single but what I came home to were great friends and family.
My style changed in Italy (it got better), I was able to cook for my friends (got better), and my new friends came into my life (which was enriching). Like my friend who went to Manhattan College and some friends who came to visit New York City. So many people want to visit New York and I played tour guide for a few of them.
After our semester finally ended we had a girl come to sublet our housemate’s room because she left to study abroad in Chile. Our new roommate was from New Jersey, but her ethnicity was Argentinian and family was from Israel. So she spoke English, Spanish, and Hebrew. Argentina is my dream country. She was interesting and fun. Summer in the city was really fun on our roof and in Central Park on the daily. My favorite part about hanging out on both, is it’s a free way to have fun.
I even kept healthy habits like running everyday like I did on the Tiber but now it was The East River of the Upper East Side. While I was in the city for the summer I missed major lifetime events like Bonaroo (all my friends talked about for years)  and a cross country road trip (that I still want to do in life) all for an accounting class (I took to graduate on time) which I ended up failing. It made me so depressed, but that night I found 50 Euro on the ground in Chinatown. It cheered me up, especially because it exchanges to $60. As a New York City student, that can really last you. I met my friends from the program in New York that evening and had dinner, and tried to forget about Accounting, even though it was hard to.
I had intentions my senior year that was coming up. I needed a new place to live and was looking to save money. So Jersey was a good option. I desperately needed an internship as I was approaching obtaining my degree and needed it for my last set of credits. Retaking accounting as well as all my other business courses of course, was on my agenda. Lastly, my last year of my college career was happening so I just wanted to make the most of it. I was finally turning 21 and after this final year, we all didn’t know where we’d end up. Last time I lived with the girls.  It was an end of an Era Upper East Side, and was bittersweet.
