Apartmentquest Final (?) Update: I signed a sublease agreement today! I’ll be moving in next Sunday.
The Stats:
It’s a 4-bed 2-bath in I Don’t Want To Post My Address On The Internet Town. My room is slightly smaller than the one I have now, but still fairly spacious, and can easily fit the bed, desk, and shelves. I’m on the third floor with a guy I know from college and our bathroom, and on the second floor is the kitchen, living room, second bath, and rooms for the other two people
My commute is about 45 minutes, which is a little longer than my current one, but “walk 10-odd minutes to the train station” is replaced with “walk one minute to the bus stop”, so it’s a better commute when it’s really hot/humid or when it’s cold, which are the two types of weather that exist in Boston. The buses in Redactedtown run every ten minutes, too. It’s also much closer to where I’ve been taking art classes if I start those up again, which I hope to do.
There’s a coin-op washer and a free drier, and to get to it you have go outside where the sun is and use the side door to access a dungeon, and it’s shared with my three roommates plus two people on the first floor (which is a separate apartment). This sort of sucks, but when I decided to go with this one I was getting two apartments mixed up in my head and thought that there were twelve people in the building instead of six, so it’s not as bad as I thought as long as I don’t wait until Sunday, and I can cross “Laundry Service” out of the monthly budget I made (also package delivery is safer than I thought it was since the front door to the building is unlocked and packages aren’t just left out on the street)
The biggest advantage of this place vs my current is that I’ll be able to use the living room much more easily to have people over for DnD and stuff, and that every action any person takes in the living room is not broadcast straight to my room via nightmare acoustics. I might even be able to read a book! The biggest disadvantage is the laundry and that I might not be able to get wired internet for a while, my poor gaming heart.
But the biggest upside generally is the rent, which is $700/mo plus utilities. That’s really good for Boston, and it means that I can afford to continue making comics. Saffron and Sage is returning in March, and Legend of the Hare v2 is hopefully coming in summer (a lot of work still needs to be done on that which the apartmentquest knocked waaaaay down the priority tree). I’ve been really bad about spending money in the few months leading up to the move notice, so I’m trying to set a budget and keep to it. Right now it looks like this:

There’s a lot of wiggle room here and I still haven’t got my tomfoolery down that low (the move will help with this in some ways actually), but I managed to get my bank account from “Oh man, this is getting irresponsible” nearly all the way back to “If I get laid off and can’t find a new job for a while, I’d be okay”, so I’m feeling a lot better about basically everything going on in my life than I was six weeks ago.
Now to get back to work on Javascriptquest. I’m trying to become a Junior Developer at work, which would solve all of my money problems pretty easily. I did a simple breakout game and I’m working on a trading card generator
