after watching jcs last night i figured it could be fun to practice a bit of anatomy based on ss, so i chose the crucifixion scene (sweden 2014) bc it was rly good but im realising it just looks like another drawing of his crucifixion (biblical) rather than jcs (fanart)

ok this is LOVELY and im not contesting any of it

but I want to go in a different direction

to me, the most important thing about "superstar", which productions rarely fully draw out of the number, is how fucked up it is that jesus' torture and death are so widely celebrated, both at the time of their occurrence and today by modern christians. the whole show is a satire, but "superstar" is very specifically a satire of spectacle. personally I think the swedish 2014 production is the only production (that I've seen) that has managed to properly pull this off: throughout the entire big sparkly dancey number, jesus is onstage, bleeding, in excruciating pain, silently pleading for help from judas, the ensemble, and perhaps most importantly the audience. but of course, no one even tries to help him. because in his role as the messiah, he ceases to be human in our eyes.

he wasn't human to his disciples when they worshipped him. he wasn't human to the crowds who called for his crucifixion. love or hate, it's the same thing: denial of his personhood, culminating in the public death demanded by both followers and enemies.

and here we are, the audience, watching the spectacle of jesus' death all over again. it's happening because we demanded it, because we bought tickets and we're filling the seats. he's a superstar. of course we're going to cheer for him.

(this is all heavily inspired by the curtain call of the guy who didn't like musicals, which you should watch if you haven't, the show is phenomenal and that curtain call is a stroke of genius)

if it were up to me i'd have the curtain call take place while jesus was still up there on the cross. he doesn't bow he's just up there dead. the last one to come out is judas in the outfit he wore during superstar, he beams at the crowd, bows, and leads the company in gesturing up to jesus' corpse and they all clap and the crowd goes wild

in the swedish translation of gethsemane, jesus sings "se mig, se när jag dör, se mig när jag dör" which i would argue has a very different implication compared to the english original "just watch me die/see how i'll die" bc you can interpret it as him begging his father/god to see *him*, like see his true self, as he's dying rather than just passively observing it
