Joaquin Caparros: Armenia must have faith in the work being done

FIFA.com has spoken exclusively with Armenia coach Joaquin Caparros after three straight victories in Qatar 2022 qualifying.

When Joaquin Caparros was appointed Sevilla coach back in 2000, he could never have guessed where he would be coaching 21 years later.

From then until 2005, he became an idol at the Andalusian club, contributing to the development and consolidation of future stars like Sergio Ramos, Jesus Navas, Jose Antonio Reyes and Dani Alves. After taking charge of a variety of clubs in Spain, Switzerland and even Qatar, he returned to Sevilla in 2018, where he had two short spells as interim coach interspersed with a period as the club’s director of football. Then in early 2020, he got a call from Gines Melendez that would change everything.

The veteran coach, who had enjoyed great success while in charge of Spain’s youth teams, was the one who sought out Caparros to offer him the Armenia job, having himself being appointed technical director of football at the country’s football association the previous year. Now in need of a coach for the national team, he knew right away that Joaquin was his man.

“They want to develop, and they know that this depends on the credentials of the coaches they have. They’re doing great and we’re seeing results that give credence to the president and everyone involved. It’s the path we have to follow,” Caparros tells FIFA.com when asked about the change in Armenian football.

“I still had time on my contract with Sevilla, but Gines Melendez told me about the Armenia opportunity, so I met him and the president of the national federation. There was a good feeling and a sense of empathy, so we hit it off and came to an agreement quite quickly. They trust us and there’s very smooth communication,” Caparros says of the decision to embark on this adventure.

Since then, the mutual affection between Caparros and Armenia has only deepened, helped by a dream start for the coach. “Getting promoted to UEFA Nations League B was reward for the work being done, but it was also unexpected because we were competing against quality teams like Georgia and North Macedonia. It was a success and provided a major morale boost for the country and the squad. It reaffirmed that Armenia must have faith in the work being done,” said the former coach of Athletic Bilbao, Deportivo La Coruna and Mallorca, among others.

That promotion was the best possible prelude to the European qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, in which Armenia have made a perfect start, winning their opening three games in the last week of March to lead Group J.

“We’ve begun the qualifiers with a lot of enthusiasm but remain conscious of how tough our group is. We’ve started well, but we’re keeping our feet on the ground. We’re in with teams like Romania, Iceland, North Macedonia, and especially Germany, which are very strong. That’s where we find ourselves, but we’re hopeful and excited, and no one can take that away from us,” Caparros says.

The 65-year-old knows it is a time for calm heads, especially when you look back at what has happened so far in the evenly matched Group J. “Being in a group that throws up crazy results is good for us, but we know it’ll still be very difficult. We’re talking about teams with a lot of [good] players and a great deal of history, like Germany, who are always favorites.”

However, when asked about specific objectives, Caparros is not prepared to look beyond September. “We have to take it one game at a time and see how far we can go. We’re not playing again [in the qualifiers] until September, so we’ll see how the players are doing. We’re relying on our strength as a team as well as mental fortitude.”

And while he has only been in charge of Armenia for ten games, the Spanish coach has hit it off really well in the eastern European country. “From the start, everyone’s been empathetic, from the president down to the coaching staff. It’s a joy to go to team gatherings and be with the lads, because they’re so committed.”

Caparros has only good things to say about his day-to-day work with the national team. “We have an amazing academy. There are ten football pitches here, all maintained superbly, and a residential building with luxury rooms. Everything you need… We’re very comfortable,” he says.

But surely for a Spanish coach in Armenia, the language barrier is a problem? “Within the squad we speak four languages: Russian, Armenian, English and Spanish,” Caparros tells FIFA.com, insisting it has not been an issue: “There’s very fluid communication, and furthermore football is a universal language. When the whistle blows, everyone understands each other. This non-verbal communication has been fundamental.”

Asked what it would mean for Armenia to reach a major tournament like the EURO or World Cup, the coach says, “Just winning promotion in the Nations League was very emotional, so I can only imagine what it would be like… However, I’ve not even thought about it. I’ve been in football for many years, so I know we have to take it one step at a time. So let the people of Armenia enjoy the victories, and let us focus on our working methods,” he concludes.

Caparros is clearly proud of this Armenia team and the work they have done, so it will be fascinating to see just how far they can go together.

Conta-se que numa noite, estando ela imersa em oração, apareceram-lhe estes três Santos e convidaram-na a segui-los. Em êxtase, ela os acompanhou. Quando voltou a si, estava dentro do mosteiro das agostinianas… Havia entrado lá milagrosamente, pois todas as portas e janelas encontravam-se perfeitamente fechadas. Na manhã seguinte, a madre superiora reconheceu nesse prodigioso fato uma clara indicação da vontade divina e decidiu acolher Rita como noviça nessa santa congregação. Obediência recompensada pelo milagre. Já revestida do hábito, a nova religiosa foi um exemplo de virtude para todas as suas irmãs de vocação. Dos três votos da religião, aquele em que mais se esmerava era o de obediência, fazendo sempre a vontade das outras em tudo, até mesmo no que poderia parecer ridículo e insensato. Por exemplo, a superiora mandou-lhe regar todos os dias uma parreira que já estava seca e morta. A obediente freira cumpriu rigorosamente a ordem durante um ano. Uma vez mais o que parecia impossível se realizou: do tronco morto brotaram sarmentos que cresceram e produziram flores e frutos! Existe ainda essa “videira de Santa Rita”, que produz uvas de um sabor especial, as quais amadurecem em novembro. Partícipe das dores de Jesus coroado de espinhos. Durante a Quaresma de 1443, o grande pregador Santiago de Monte Brandone fez em Cássia um magnífico sermão sobre a Paixão de Jesus, destacando sobretudo o episódio da coroação de espinhos. Depois de ouvir esse sermão, Santa Rita sentiu-se tomada do desejo de participar dos sofrimentos de Nosso Senhor nesse lance de sua Paixão. Rezando diante de seu crucifixo, viu espargir-se dele suavemente uma luz, e um espinho desprender-se da coroa e cravar-se em sua fronte, provocando-lhe uma ferida que a fez sofrer durante seus últimos 15 anos de vida. Além de exalar mau odor, essa provocava-lhe muitas enfermidades. Assim, teve ela atendido deu desejo de ser verdadeiramente partícipe das dores de Jesus coroado de espinhos. Morte santa, a recompensa. Santa Rita teve uma morte santa, sendo obediente à vontade de Deus até o fim. Estando já muito enferma, pediu a Jesus um sinal de que seus filhos estavam no Céu. Em meio a um rigoroso inverno, recebeu uma rosa colhida no jardim de sua antiga casa, em Rocca Porena… Pediu um segundo sinal e, no fim do inverno, recebeu um figo, também de seu jardim. Com a realização desses dois “impossíveis”, Deus, por assim dizer, mostra seu comprazimento em que essa grande Santa seja invocada como a “Advogada dos impossíveis”. No dia 22 de maio de 1457, voou para o Céu a bela alma de Santa Rita. A chaga de sua fronte transformou-se em uma mancha vermelha como um rubi, de onde se exalava uma agradável fragrância. Sua cela ficou iluminada por uma luz celestial e os sinos, sozinhos, repicaram num toque de júbilo e glória. Foi velada na igreja, aonde acorreu uma multidão de pessoas para vê-la e venerá-la. De seu santo corpo emanava um tal perfume que nunca foi enterrado. Permanece incorrupto até hoje, exposto à veneração dos fiéis no convento de Cássia. Mensagem de Santa Rita para os dias atuais. Qual é a mensagem que esta grande Santa nos transmitiria nestes dias em que vivemos? Creio que a resposta está nas palavras proferidas pelo Santo Padre João Paulo II, em 20 de maio de 2000, saudando os devotos de Santa Rita que faziam a peregrinação jubilar: É uma mensagem que brota de sua vida: a humildade e a obediência foram o caminho que Rita percorreu para uma semelhança cada vez mais perfeita com Cristo crucificado. O estigma que brilha em sua fronte é a autenticação de sua maturidade cristã. Na cruz com Jesus culminou o amor que já havia conhecido e expressado de modo heróico em seu lar e mediante a participação nas vicissitudes de sua cidade. Seguindo a espiritualidade de Santo Agostinho, fez-se discípula do Crucificado e ‘especialista em sofrimento’, aprendeu a compreender as penas do coração humano. Deste modo, Rita se converteu na advogada dos pobres e dos desesperados, obtendo inumeráveis graças de consolo e fortaleza aos que a invocam nas mais diversas situações. Que Santa Rita de Cássia nos ajude a compreender os desígnios de Deus para cada um de nós individualmente, e a sorver até a última gota o cálice da obediência à sua vontade santíssima, ao longo de nossa existência. IV) Tempo para nascer e tempo para morrer Está escrito: Há um tempo para nascer e um tempo para morrer. Acertadamente se refere logo no princípio a correlação destas duas realidades inseparáveis, o nascimento e a morte. Com efeito, depois do nascimento vem inevitavelmente a morte, e toda a nova vida tem por fim necessário a dissolução da morte. Há um tempo para nascer e um tempo para morrer. Conceda-me o Céu esta graça: nascer a tempo e morrer também no tempo oportuno. Ninguém deve pensar que o Eclesiastes fala aqui do nascimento em que não intervém a nossa vontade e da morte que também não depende de nós, como se nisso pudesse haver algum mérito de virtude. Porque nem o nascimento depende da vontade da mulher, nem a morte do livre arbítrio de quem morre. E o que não depende da nossa vontade não pode ser considerado virtude nem vício. É preciso, portanto, entender que nascimento é esse que vem a seu tempo, e que morte é essa que sobrevém no tempo oportuno. No meu entender, o nascimento vem a seu tempo e não prematuramente, se, como disse Isaías, aquele que concebeu no temor de Deus dá à luz os frutos de salvação com as dores [de parto] da alma. De facto, somos em certo modo pais de nós mesmos, quando, pela boa disposição de espírito e pelo livre arbítrio, nos formamos a nós mesmos, nos geramos e nos damos à luz. Isto fazemos nós, quando recebemos a Deus em nós, tornando-nos filhos de Deus, filhos da virtude, filhos do Altíssimo. Pelo contrário, permanecemos imperfeitos e imaturos, en-quanto ainda não estiver formada em nós, como diz o Apóstolo, a imagem de Cristo. É necessário, portanto, que o homem de Deus alcance a sua plenitude e perfeição. Se é assim evidente o modo de nascermos no devido tempo, não é menos claro o modo de morrermos no tempo oportuno. Segundo São Paulo, para bem morrer todo o tempo é oportuno. Ele exclama em seus escritos: Todos os dias me exponho à morte, pela glória que tenho de vós em Cristo Jesus; e também: Por vossa causa somos expostos à morte todos os dias; e ainda: Em nós mesmos sentimos a sentença de morte. Não nos é difícil saber como Paulo se expunha à morte todos os dias: ele nunca viveu para o pecado; sempre mortificou a sua carne, levou sempre no seu corpo os sofrimentos da morte de Cristo e esteve sempre crucificado com Cristo; nunca viveu para si mesmo, mas era Cristo que vivia nele. É esta, no meu entender, a morte oportuna, a morte que nos dá a verdadeira vida. Eu dou a morte e a vida, diz o Senhor, para nos convencer de que estar morto para o pecado e vivo no espírito é um verdadeiro dom de Deus. O oráculo divino nos assegura que é Deus que, através da morte, nos dá a vida. Oração Concedei-nos, Deus todo-poderoso, que, meditando continuamente nas realidades espirituais, pratiquemos sempre, em palavras e obras, o que Vos agrada. Por Nosso Senhor. V. Summer Transfer Window: Guardiola's Manchester City Strategy

There is still time in summer transfer window to close and the European clubs are looking to get the best fit for their squad depending on their financial power. However there are clubs who would go a step ahead in the transfer market spending. Specially those which have rich owners like Manchester City's UAE bosses. City brought in Pep Guardiola last season to take them into the Europe's elite. The Spanish, arguably the most successful manager of his generation, has a three year contract with the club with one year already gone without a silverware in his pocket. With one season gone without silverware, Pep is desperately looking for silverware and is on a revamp mission at the Manchester club. Gael Clichy, Pablo Zabaletta, Bacary Sagna, Jesus Navas, Nolito and Willy Caballero have departed from the club. The City manager is also ready to offload Joe Hart, Eliaquim Mangala, Samir Nasri and Wilfried Bony, all of whom spent last season out on loan, as he lays the groundwork for a summer of revolution at the club that is likely to mean up to seven new arrivals. Manchester City have the most expensive defence in football history with Benjamin Mendy completing a £49.4million move to the Etihad Stadium to leave the club with four of the five most costly defenders ever bought. Mendy's fee could rise to £52million with add ons and sees him join a defence already boasting Kyle Walker, who joined City from Spurs this month in a deal that could eventually be worth £54million, as well as John Stones, for whom City paid Everton an initial £47.5million rising to £50million last summer. Crucially City believe they have the financial muscle to maintain such spending even in the face sky-rocketing fees. City have invested more than £200m on players already during this transfer window - and retain interest in Kylian Mbappe, Alexis Sanchez and cover at centre back. The City manager has not given up hope of a world record deal for Mbappe - pointedly refusing to rule out a move when questioned on the subject in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. "Madrid doesn’t have more than Manchester City have," he said. "Players are very important and we always try to get the best players possible." "In order to get to the level of Madrid or Barcelona we just need time." And he says the enormous fees being quoted for the likes of Mbappe are necessary in the current market. "I could not imagine two or three years ago that people would pay 100m or 120m for one player," he said. "Now it’s happened and it’s going to happen more." "I would like to pay less for the club, but the market is the market." "All the clubs spent a lot of money not just us. We are going to see until August 31 the amount of new transfers coming." While Guardiola may like his team to keep 100 per cent possession, the ability to counter at devastating pace should add another weapon to the team's arsenal.

Manchester City 2016-17 season review: Results, roster changes, and 2017 summer transfer targets

Expect a lot of new signings.

The recently-ended season did not go quite according to plan for Manchester City, who fell short of expectations for much of the season. Various factors like injuries and key players losing form played into that, but the fact remains that Pep Guardiola and City came into the season expecting to fight for multiple titles, and wound up being well out of the Premier League title race, and only making one cup semi-final while getting eliminated much earlier than hoped in two others.

But not everything went terribly for Manchester City, and there’s plenty of reason for optimism in the season to come. This is still one of the absolute best clubs in England, and they’re in a very high tier of quality compared to clubs across Europe. They just haven’t quite found a way to take that next step yet, and that will have to be the focus of the coming summer.

What went right

City finished third in the Premier League, which means that they have a guaranteed spot in the Champions League group stage next season. That’s not quite what City fans were hoping to achieve coming into the season, but having that spot locked up now is a lot better than having to go through a playoff or not even having that much for next year.

They also had several players take big steps forward in their development and performance levels this season, most especially midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who had 18 assists in the league this season and was a constant rock for City in the final third. They also saw Sergio Agüero score 20 league goals in his third straight season — not a common thing in the Premier League by any stretch of the imagination — and saw a big, if injury-shortened, debut from young Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus. Add in solid season performances from Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane, including some runs of excellent form from each, and there’s a lot to look forward to in the final third for Manchester City.

What went wrong

A whole lot. They got eliminated in the first Champions League knockout round, they got booted from the League Cup by Manchester United, they couldn’t get past a struggling Arsenal side in the FA Cup, and it took a late-season spell of struggle from Liverpool for City to finish third in the Premier League. Once upon a time that would have been an alright season for City, but these days that’s well below expectations, especially in the era of Pep Guardiola being in charge as manager.

Especially with the long stretches of the season where City looked like they were out of ideas and didn’t have any answers for what their opponents were throwing at them, there was a lot of disappointment to be found. Sure, there’s reasons for some of that like injuries and some key players struggling for form, but that doesn’t change that fans expected more and are disappointed with what they got.

Reasons for optimism

Their attack is still young, hungry, and improving, with lots of current quality and so much room to grow. Yes, there are some issues elsewhere on the pitch, but their attack could easily take the next step to become the best in England and among the best in Europe with how it’s set up, especially with Pep Guardiola in charge.

And of course, having Guardiola in charge is reason for optimism in and of itself. One of the most accomplished managers in recent European history, Guardiola did a lot of great work to help stabilize City during their darker times this season and find ways to keep getting results even when his squad was far from healthy. Give him a more stable and reliable platform to work from, and great things could happen.

What they need this summer

Manchester City need more younger quality and depth in defense and central midfield, two areas where City have been progressively older and more injury-prone over the last few years. Even their bigger signings there — like John Stones and Ilkay Gundogan — are guys who have struggled to stay healthy.

Ideally, City would sign four players this summer — two central midfielders, one of whom is a more defensive bruiser and one who’s more of an engine-room type of midfielder who can play multiple roles, but primarily help maintain and improve their possession game. The more defensive player would ideally be of starting quality, where the other would slot into more of a rotation role.

Defensively, they need a center back and a right back, preferably ones who can at minimum push for a starting job. All four players would ideally be around 25 years old and while they don’t need to be of a specific physical type or league pedigree, getting players who already have a track record of strong starting play and a clean bill of health would be a huge plus.

To make room for those four players, a similar number would need to be sold off to make room in the squad. Players like Fernando Reges, Fabian Delph, Jesus Navas, and Nolito are all players on the fringes of the squad who don’t add much value to the team these days, but could still fetch a decent transfer fee if the right teams become interested.

Another spot to consider would be to find a new starter in goal, as neither Claudio Bravo nor Willy Caballero were particularly impressive this season. With this summer shaping up to have a slim goalkeeper market, however, that might be easier said than done, and City might have to shell out tens of millions of more pounds than they’d prefer to get the kind of goalkeeper they would want.

For Your Amusement.

The way the heat fell down on me and the bright light that made it impossible for me to see when I opened my eyes, I would have thought I was in an alternate dimension. Add in the heavenly, chiseled features of the man who was staring down at me with the piercing sky blue eyes and my fears were only heightened.

My lips were too dry to utter a word so it was him instead who spoke. "Are you okay?”

"Where am I? Who are you?" My eyes squinted with confusion and in an attempt to block out the bright sun that was blinding me even as this stranger hovered over me, kneeling by my side.

"I'm Jesús."

"No. Seriously. Who are you?"

An amused smirk laid his lips as if he had gotten this question millions of times though he didn't bother to repeat himself. He held out his hand for me to take but I quickly shook my head. "No thanks. I'll just lay here." I hadn't realized until now that I was laying on hard concrete.

Another chuckle. I narrowed my eyes at the stranger who was known as Jesús. "Do you find me amusing or something?"

"I do." He nodded with a smile and an equally handsome man walked up and handed him a water bottle. What the hell type of place was this?!

I began to look around at me, finally becoming aware of my surroundings, the fact I was still at the amusement park and now there were strangers seemingly with all eyes on me. “Oh no. I’m so embarrassed. All of these people are staring and whispering about me.”

Still bent at my side, Jesús turned to look at the figures I was referring to around us before he turned to me again. “I think they’re looking at me,” he said confidently.

“Well that’s a cocky thing to say. You’re cute but you aren’t that cute.” Okay, that was a lie. He was more than cute. He was like sex on a platter.

His laugh and the smile that followed was beginning to become infectious. Maybe if I kept entertaining him, he wouldn’t leave my side and I would be stuck in this dream world forever.

“Here.” He held out the water bottle towards me which I gladly took, easily being reminded of how dry my throat felt at the moment as I twisted the cap off and satisfied my thirst. “Are you here with anyone?”

I nodded my head. “My family is around here somewhere. I walked off to grab some ice cream and I guess I got punished for that because here I am.”

“The heat just probably got to you. Let’s get you up.” He stood up first and then began helping me up as well, using his hand to support my elbow and lead me towards a nearby bench. A few people continued to stare while others began to wander away thankfully.

I sat down comfortably on the bench, relaxing temporarily in the shade that was now provided out of the blistering sun. “You should give your family a call to let them know you’re okay.”

I narrowed my eyes towards him. “I am a 25 year old grown woman. I’m able to take care of myself. They know that.”

“You sure? You look about 12 and it doesn’t help that you managed to nearly pass out on your own,” he chuckled.

“Ah, I see. So now it’s you who has the jokes?”

“Maybe,” he shrugged. I had begun to reach into my pocket and pull out my cell phone before he took it into his own hands without hesitation, scrolling through what I assumed to be the contacts.

“Is your father here?” I nodded.

I assumed he clicked the contact information he saw labeled for him as he soon had the phone pressed to his ear. Within a couple of moments he was speaking into the phone. “Hi. I’m Jesús. I’m here with your daughter and she’s not feeling too well.”

I couldn’t hear what my father was saying in response but I could see Jesús slightly nod his head as he listened, that smile still present on his face. “Yes, I’m a friend of hers. No I’m not her boyfriend.”

I quickly blushed with embarrassment. It was amazing how my parents still treated me like a child and found a way to embarrass me at every possible moment.

“We’re by the large tower. Uh huh. Okay. Thank you.” With that, he hung up and handed the phone back to me. “They’ll be here soon but in the meantime you never told me your name.”

“Y/N.”

“Well it’s nice to meet you even under the circumstances. You should probably eat something soon. It’s only going to get hotter throughout the day and I’d hate for you to fall ill again.”

“Will you come rescue me again?”

He laughed. “I’ll be there every time.” God, did he have to be so charming?!

I looked away from him for a moment to see my teenage brother nearing us, his mouth hanging open as if he had seen a ghost. “Woah,” Sean commented. “You’re Jesús Navas.”

How the hell did he know him?

“Yes. I am. This is your sister?” My mother rushed up to me before Sean could even respond to him, pulling me into a hug. “What happened? Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” I assured her but that didn’t stop her from breaking away from the hug to give me a once over to make sure all of my body parts were still there and unharmed.

Parents. They never change.

She turned to Jesús and gave him a gentle smile. “Thank you so much. I’m glad she ran into a friend.”

“It’s no problem at all. She’s a great source of entertainment,” he commented before looking towards me. “I was just going to grab some food if you wanted to come? That is if you’re not tired of me by now.”

And how could I be? With that charming smile and that tussled hair that glowed under the sunlight making him look like he had his very own personal halo. Not to mention the eyes. Ugh, those eyes.

“Sure! I mean…sure. I’m starving.” JesúsJesus stood from the bench, holding out his arm playfully so I could interlock mine with his. “I’ll take good care of her,” he commented to my parents who seemed to trust him enough to nod and allow us to walk off. Meanwhile, I was stuck still feeling as if I had actually fainted and never woken up from the daydream.
