There was that one time Austin was super rough with Gideon while giving him a haircut and turned a leaf blower on him until he cried.

There’s been multiple comments of people on reddit who interacted with Austin and said he was an asshole to service staff but obviously take that with a huge grain of salt

I feel like you could say that about any of the non-Josh Duggar boys and in-laws. Like none of them have done anything that “bad” but their belief system is so screwed up that it’s assumed

Ok I remember that video and possible unpopular opinion incoming, but I also think that was an overreaction on the part of snarkers. I've cut a lot of hair, kids included, and Gideon started crying before Austin blew his hair off because the little pieces of hair were itchy and getting in his face (understandable, it feels so annoying). As far as him being 'rough', for kids that young, you have to go quick and do what you can to keep their head still and I get how that looks 'rougher' but I didn't think it was gratuitous at all. Gideon was already agitated by the hair, Austin turned the leaf blower on for literally 2 seconds to get it off him (something I also do to Mr. SC in the summer 😂), he got more agitated and yelled, and Austin turned it off. I didn't see anything mean about that video.

I despise people rude to service workers but yea like you said, huge grain of salt. I've never seen any proof and again, snarkers consider him to be an asshole just because of his overall demeanor, I can see someone who recognized him for who he was also playing that card even if it wasn't a bad interaction. But I'm not saying that's not possible either, which if it is true fuck him.

Yea that was my point when I said "all fundie-ness considered" (badly worded arguably lol), obviously I believe he has all the baseline horrible fundamentalist Christian beliefs. I just think he gets routinely labeled as one of the worst by a lot of people for no real reason, esp when like I mentioned earlier, I've been pleasantly surprised by him and Joy more than once as far as beliefs and actions go. But of course, he's still a dumbass and a practicing member of the most odious type of Christianity.

Summary:

Jinger chose not to be apart of the doc. She did not do it because of little to no editing power. When she was asked to participate, she already was or was thinking about writing her book (unclear). She was also concerned that it wasn't a Christian production/ that there would be no redemptive or balanced quality. She wanted true Christianity to be shown.

They watched pretty much the whole thing in one night.

Jinger likes how they showed how someone could get wrapped into it. She said they captured the isolation well. She was impacted by the victim stories and so much truth was shared.

Jeremy said one of the most powerful lines was "what they feared the most was our voice" or something to that effect.

Jinger didn't love the conclusion of the doc. It was lacking in an answer of those harmed. There is no hope of where to go. She fears it does not show or encourage "disentangling". They were however not expecting them to be the church.

Jeremy said they nitpicked a couple times on some of Gothard's beliefs that were just basic Christian teachings.

Jinger was surprised by some of the positive responses to her book within her family and older friend circle.

-The Bible kind (eye roll ), Jesus not a man (which I guess is the polite way to say fuck bill got hard), they worship in a baptist church

-Not seriously but if God called them they would (I would love an in-depth explanation of how one knows when God calls one to do something like moving far away …..)

-No! Never as a couple and they spoke early on in their relationship of not using IBLP “literature” and such. “Have our own relationship with the Lord” -joy

Are they doing a name theme with sons? Gideon, gunner…

-No, Gunner was almost named Bowman James and they didn’t realize both boys wound up with G names until after they’d written gunners birth certificate

Are they going to read jills book?

-Yes! Joys already read jingers book. “If your family member wrote a book about your family would you read it? Duh!”-Austin

Dream vacation?

-Alaska!

What does it mean to put God first in your home?

-Honestly all they answered was just…. Barely coherent. Be the same in the home as in church? Whatever that means? Teach the children about him? That’s not vague. Keep the home pleasing to Him? Give me one (1) specific on how to do that I beg y’all!!! And then there’s a spiel about praying…

Do joy like Austin beard?

-yes but she’s getting bored with it. And then there’s a Totally Healthy banter about how joy was going to shave it of while he was asleep (impossible but ok) but Austin threatened to do the same to her eyebrows so she’s dropped the idea

The key to a successful marriage?

-Fight for your marriage, but fight together and not against each other. Austin is apparently very good at apologizing

What do you think Andrew and Neil get each other for christmas? Do you think they even do presents for each other or do they do something else?

I think they'd definitely give each other something this time of year. Eventually they probably get roped into going by Aaron's when he has kids, but other than paying a visit for a day, I think they'd spend most of their time doing as little as possible together in their home. They always spoil the shit out of their cats (despite doing it all year round) and got a tree exactly once. (Never. Again.)

Andrew strikes me as the kind of guy that gets everyone he knows socks as a gift. He gets Neil these thick thermal socks in a different color every year that Neil rarely wears. Meanwhile Neil will always get a variety of sweets or gift cards that he knows they'll both use - other than the one year he got Andrew a ring.

That is probably the only good thing about Gil & KJ, that they don't shun their kids for making different choices. Most of the adult girls wear pants and more modern (aka "revealing") clothes and many of them have openly admitted to kissing before marriage. They seem much more open minded about little things like that whereas JB takes it as a personal affront when his children defy him even as adults.

The Bates and the Duggars are very interesting side by side studies lol. The Bates kids are definitely conservative overall, but there are just some fundamental differences which i find so interesting bc they were raised in seemingly near identical environments, with the Bates kids being arguably less privileged for more of their lives.

I guess the most obvious hypothesis for why some fundie kids feel free to make their own decisions about their lifestyles as adults and some are afraid to is that parents like JB rule with more fear and less unconditional love.

The example I always remember is when Michelle and Jinger Duggar were being interviewed together and they were asked about Jinger's decision to wear pants (which was a sort of new thing at the time) and it was so emotional for Jinger to talk about with her mom there she started crying. Or how when Jill was asked about her parents feel about her nose ring or wearing regular swimsuits on instagram (shocking) she made a point to say they were not fans and didn't say much else for a while.

Meanwhile, the Bateses (?) answers to those kind of questions are sooo much more casual, never has either Gil or Kelly said anything negative about the kids making their own choices in that way as adults, they're always very positive and affirming and make a point to say it's their prerogative and they'll love them regardless. And to my knowledge, none of the Bates kids have made a big deal about *coming out* as a pants wearer lol. They've definitely answered questions about it bc people remember them in those neon prairie dresses, but it's always along the same lines, very casual.

That's not to say the Bates have perfect parents, I'm sure there are something things they would definitely not accept from their adult kids based on their values (ahem, same sex partners) but it's just interesting to compare adult kids from super conservative families. It's such a spectrum, like I truly believe is one of Jill Rodrigues's daughters started wearing pants they'd be disowned lol.

Is it true all the texts from the Duggar girls and their boyfriends went to jimbob first for approval and then it got sent to the girls

To my knowledge, the setup was a group chat with the parents included, but there’s a chance I’m misremembering.

In one of Jill and Dericks Q and A videos jill mentions that they both grew up getting all of the "normal" vaccines that kids get but in a CO episode where michelle is reminiscing with Jinger over a photo album, there are photos of all of the younger kids (now older kids) with major chicken pox. The chicken pox vaccine is one of the regular ones you get when you're a toddler so I'm not sure why jill said that? It doesn't seem so me like she would like but must know that she didn't get that shot.

I mean, there are basically two answers here:

(1) Jill was being intentionally misleading to keep up appearances.

(2) Chicken pox might just be the exception and the Duggars did get the other standard childhood vaccines. I could actually see this as a possibility based on my experience with the vaccine. The first varicella vaccine was approved in the United States in 1995 (the year Joe, Duggar #7 was born. Also, me! It was approved when Joe & I were like, 6-8 weeks old.) So it only became a routine vaccine relatively recently. While we were discussing modern vaccine hesitancy, my mom actually talked about the varicella vaccine. Since it was so new when my sister and I were so young, she was concerned about it (even though we generally received all the standard vaccinations on the recommended schedule) that for that vaccine, she did sit down with our pediatrician and have a discussion about it. We were ultimately vaccinated. But for people my parents/JB&M's age, chicken pox was a routine childhood illness, not seen as a big deal, and the vaccine was new and potentially risky- well, living in times like these, you know what happened. Many people who did generally vaccinate declined that particular vaccination. Here's an article from 2010 (I know it's WebMD, but it captures the hesitancy nicely) which contains this quote: "But several studies suggest that the VZV[chicken pox] vaccine is the most commonly refused childhood vaccine." [emphasis mine].

So I do think there's a world where the Duggar kids got the vaccines we think of as standard like MMR and DTaP but not varicella vaccine and Jill is telling the truth here. But even then, she might just be misleading. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the true one.

ETA: as a few people have pointed out, you can get the vaccine and not build immunity, that’s true! But I think it’s quite unlikely (albeit not impossible) that all the Duggars got the vaccine and still got chicken pox. The 19KaC episode featured 12 of 19 Duggs with chicken pox. Michelle also basically said, “once one gets chicken pox, everyone who hasn’t had it yet will also get them.” Just to me, that episode suggested they weren’t vaccinated but again, anything is possible!
