Hall of Fame Pitcher Walter Johnson’s 104-Year-Old Photo-Matched Jersey Brings the Heat at Heritage Auctions in May
Tumblr media
Countless offerings among the almost 3,200 available in Heritage’s May 16-18 Spring Sports Catalog Auctioncould serve as its centerpiece, its highlight — that one thing that belongs in a museum, if not a Hall of Fame. Like, say, the road New York Yankees jersey worn by Mickey Mantle during his final season in 1968, then signed and inscribed to a Yanks batboy. Or the photo-matched road Brooklyn Dodgers jersey Sandy Koufax wore during his rookie season in 1955 when he was not yet known as The Left Hand of God. Or the bat Ty Cobb used in 1922, his third — and final — season as a .400 hitter.
The list of must-sees and must-owns is seemingly endless, whether it’s a box of unopened Fleer basketball cards from 1961-62 or the pair of Adidas Crazy 8’s photo-matched to Kobe Bryant’s first All-Star Game in 1998. As has become tradition, the Spring Sports Catalog Event brims with the jerseys, sneakers, gloves, bats and helmets worn and used by some of sports’ most towering titans, from Willie Mays to Lionel Messi, Reggie Jackson to Gale Sayers, Warren Spahn to Tom Brady, Hank Aaron to Jim Plunkett, Carl Hubbell to Terry Bradshaw. The abundance of photo-matched jerseys in this auction alone qualifies it as historic, as do the cards featured throughout, among them a near-mint 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle, a gem-mint Ty Cobb from the fabled Black Swamp find and the only known Elgin Baylor Topps card from 1969 graded a perfect 10.
But to begin, the relatively plain flannel jersey in this auction — gray, pinstriped, a small “W” stitched into each short sleeve — draws the eye first. It’s also a century-old jersey that still has tales to tell.
Collectors have always known who wore it: Walter Johnson, who spent all of his 21 seasons in the sun as the right-handed hurler for the Washington Senators. Johnson’s name is stitched into the collar in red cursive, just below the A.G. Spalding & Bros. label. We’ve always known, too, when Johnson wore it: during the 1919-1922 seasons, when the man sportswriter Grantland Rice called “The Big Train” was teammates with another right-handed pitcher, Eric “Swat” Erickson, to whom Johnson gifted the jersey upon Erickson’s retirement from the big leagues following his 1919-1922 stint with Washington.
Only days before this auction opened, Resolution Photomatching determined that the “one-time king of pitchers” — as Johnson was called in 1933’s Who’s Who in Baseball – wore this very jersey on April 29, 1920. That’s when the Nationals downed the New York Yankees 2-1 in front of 5,000 at the hallowed Polo Grounds.
Johnson recorded eight strikeouts that spring afternoon in New York, two coming against a newly minted Yankee right fielder named Babe Ruth, who recorded just a single hit (and RBI) against Johnson. The Big Train, who batted last in the Nats’ lineup, also got a hit that afternoon — a triple. In his 1920 book The Home-Run King, Ruth wrote that Johnson was “the best of them all.”
Earlier this month, Resolution photo-matched the jersey to a photo distributed by news agency Underwood & Underwood, whose caption heralds Johnson as “the unsurpassable speed twirler of the Nationals.” The photo also notes that Johnson’s “remarkable speed ball aroused all balldom several years ago” and that he pitched against the Yankees that April afternoon “with the same ‘pep’ that characterized his name.”
Two known Johnson jerseys have survived his storied career, during which The Big Train recorded 3,509 strikeouts (putting him at ninth on the all-time list), 417 wins (the most all-time behind only Cy Young’s 511 victories) and 110 shutout wins (still the record). One, from 1927, is on display at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. The other is in this auction.
“We have had the opportunity at Heritage Auctions to offer some incredible and museum-worthy jerseys over the decades,” says Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage. “But this Walter Johnson example, photo-matched to his first dual with the great Babe Ruth in Yankees pinstripes, certainly qualifies it as a cream-of-the-crop rarity.”

In Showtime’s fresh miniseries “Waco: The Aftermath,” an inspired soundtrack moment is when David (Keean Johnson) Koresh dances during a singalong flash-mob to George Michael’s “Freedom 90” while riding inside a school bus.
Texas and Bexar County marijuana laws:
What to know for 4/20
Saturday marks one of the most well-known cultural holidays in the country: 420.
Celebrated every April 20, the holiday is a day for people to advocate for the legalization of marijuana in the United States and other countries.
The drug has been legalized in 24 states and decriminalized in seven more.
Fourteen states have legalized the medical use of cannabis.
Texas is not one of them.
The Lone Star State’s policy remains that weed is illegal.
The only exception for medical marijuana use is when doctors prescribe low-THC cannabis under the state’s Compassionate Use Program.
Is it legal to carry marijuana in Texas?
Sec. 481.121. of the Texas Health and Safety Code covers marijuana possession.
The punishment for the crime depends on the amount of marijuana a person has when arrested.
There are six varying offenses depending on the amount, starting with a Class B misdemeanor and ending with a first-degree felony.
A Class B misdemeanor is for people in possession of 2 ounces or less.
A Class A misdemeanor is when people possess 4 ounces or less but more than 2.
A state jail felony is for less than 4 pounds but more than 4 ounces.
Third-degree felony offense is for 50 pounds or less but more than 5 pounds.
A second-degree felony is 2,000 pounds or less but more than 50.
The highest offense would be a first-degree felony for possession of more than 2,000 pounds.
The punishment for that crime is up to life in prison and/or a fine up to $50,000.
Is marijuana legal in San Antonio?
While it is illegal in the state to possess marijuana, Bexar County created an initiative in partnership with the San Antonio Police Department to issue citations for specific low-level offenses rather than making an on-site arrest.
The Cite & Release initiative is “an important tool that allows non-violent, low-level offenders to complete an appropriate sanction while maintaining a job and housing.” San Antonio police can issue citations for nonviolent misdemeanor offenses like possession of marijuana, misdemeanor theft, driving with an invalid licensee and criminal mischief.
Those cited will avoid being arrested and must complete an associated diversion program.
Once the program is completed, the citation will not appear on their criminal record.
According to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office, the Cite & Release initiative can reduce the burden on the local court system and jail.
It also allows officers to return to duty in “significantly less” time than it takes for an officer to make an arrest.
Has Texas decriminalized marijuana?
Texas has not decriminalized marijuana, but some cities have decriminalized it.
Those cities include Austin, Denton, Elgin, Killeen and San Marcos.
Earlier this year, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued those five cities for violating the state law.
The Texas House of Representatives passed a bill to decriminalize marijuana last year, but the bill died in the Senate.
Are CBD gummies legal in Texas?
CBD products are legal in the state of Texas if they comply with state and national laws.
CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is a chemical found in cannabis plants that don’t produce a high.
Hemp products like CBD are legal in the state.
However, they can’t be smoked.
That is illegal.
Is delta-8 or delta-9 legal in Texas?
Delta-8 and delta-9 products, which are derived from cannabis plants, are legal in Texas.
Products are allowed to have only up to a 0.3% concentration of delta-9 THC.
There is no limit on delta-8 THC.
Since there is only a very small amount of delta-8 THC found in a marijuana plant, most of the product is created in labs by extracting cannabidiols and chemically changing them to delta-8 THC.
However, some are looking to ban the two substances, including Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.
Last week, he asked state senators to look into potentially banning the products ahead of next year’s legislative session.
What does 420 mean?
The origin of 420 as a marijuana-coded term is a group of California friends, who in 1971 would meet after school to smoke at 4:20 p.m. every day and then go searching for a friend’s brother’s weed patch, according to PBS.
What exactly 420 means depends on the context the saying is being used. It can refer to the unofficial holiday of April 20, smoking at 4:20 p.m. like those California friends, smoking in general or even just marijuana.
Is packing a bag of weed on a flight back to Texas unlawful? This rule may surprise you
Going through security at any airport can be an anxious chore, especially if you have weed in your carry-on.
The possession, growing, selling, distribution and use of recreational marijuana is illegal in Texas.
Medicinal marijuana is legal in Texas, but limited as to who qualifies to get it.
CBD products — a derivative of hemp, a close cousin to the outlawed weed — are plentiful in shelves in Texas gas stations or smoke shops packaged in colorful boxes with flavors like fruity pebbles, magic mango and grape ape gusher.
Like marijuana, these cannabis-based products deliver a high.
But unlike marijuana, these products are legal in Texas, thanks to laws that allowed the cultivation of hemp.
Bringing weed from a state where marijuana is legal back home to Texas may seem like a way to circumvent strict laws.
But weed is not legal in Texas.
So, will airport Transportation Security Administration agents actually search for drugs in luggage?
Here’s what we know:
Will TSA agents in airports search for marijuana in your bag?
The Transportation Security Administration are not looking for drugs when they screen fliers, but if they find marijuana or other drugs, they will refer the matter to law enforcement.
TSA’s screening procedures are focused on security to detect potential threats to aircraft and passengers.
While TSA officers are screening for weapons or other harmful items and happen across an illegal substance, it will be reported to local law enforcement, according to the TSA.
Why is it illegal to fly with marijuana?
While several states have legalized recreational marijuana use, the federal government has not.
The TSA is in charge of security at airports, while the Federal Aviation Administration governs the airspace.
Since the federal government has jurisdiction over the airspace and federal law states that recreational marijuana use is illegal, any kind of flying with weed possession is unlawful, according to the Washington Post.
Even if you were traveling between two states where recreational marijuana use is legal, it’s still illegal to fly with weed.
This applies to medicinal marijuana as well.
The only exception to flying with medicinal marijuana, is if it contains less than 0.3% of THC on a dry weight basis, according to the Washington Post.
Can Texans drive home with legal weed bought in California? How about flying it in?
Several states allow for recreational marijuana use, but Texas is not one of them.
The Lone Star State does allow for medicinal marijuana use, but only in certain instances.
People diagnosed with cancer, multiple sclerosis, post-traumatic stress disorder and more, all qualify.
In total, 24 states across the U.S. have legalized recreational marijuana and 38 states have allowed medicinal use.
But with several states only a few hours drive from Dallas-Fort Worth, what happens if someone crosses state lines with marijuana in their possession?
Here’s what to know about Texas’ marijuana laws:
WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY ABOUT MARIJUANA IN TEXAS?
The possession, growing, selling, distribution and use of recreational marijuana is illegal in Texas.
State law is tough on marijuana offenses.
Fines can run in the thousands, plus years in jail.
Here’s how the penalties shake out for marijuana possession:
2 ounces or less — Class B misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $2,000 and up to 180 days incarcerated.
2-4 ounces — Class A misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $4,000 and up to one year incarcerated.
4 ounces to 5 pounds — State jail felony with a maximum fine of $10,000 and 180 days to 2 years incarcerated.
5 to 50 pounds — 3rd degree felony with a maximum fine of $10,000 and two to 10 years incarcerated.
50 to 2,000 pounds — 2nd degree felony with a maximum fine of $10,000 and two to 20 years incarcerated.
2,000 pounds or more — 1st degree felony with a maximum fine of $50,000 five to 99 years incarcerated.
The penalties for selling marijuana are:
7 grams or less for no remuneration — Class B misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $2,000 and up to 180 days incarcerated.
7 grams or less — Class A misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $4,000 and up to a year incarcerated.
7 grams to 5 pounds — State jail felony with a maximum fine of $10,000 and 180 days to two years incarcerated.
5 to 50 pounds — 2nd degree felony with a maximum fine of $10,000 and two to 20 years incarcerated.
50 to 2,000 pounds — 1st degree felony with a maximum fine of $10,000 and five to 99 years incarcerated.
2,000 pounds or more — Enhanced 1st degree felony with a maximum fine of $100,000 and 10 to 99 years incarcerated.
The Texas Department of Public Safety operates an online registry of physicians who prescribe low-grade cannabis to people with epilepsy, cancer, autism and other conditions.
Finding a physician to prescribe low-THC can be found by searching the DPS website.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU CROSS TEXAS STATE LINES WITH POT?
Texas law is pretty clear:
It is illegal to possess recreational marijuana regardless of where it was purchased.
If you purchased marijuana while in Colorado and then traveled to Texas with the substance, you have broken the law.
It doesn’t matter if the marijuana was purchased legally, as soon as it crosses Texas state lines its considered contraband.
It’s not only a marijuana possession charge you’ll have to worry about, you could be charged with drug trafficking which is a federal crime, according to Westfall Sellers law firm.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU’RE CAUGHT WITH WEED IN A TEXAS AIRPORT?
The Transportation Security Administration are not looking for drugs when they screen fliers, but if they find marijuana or other drugs, they will refer the matter to law enforcement.
TSA’s screening procedures are focused on security to detect potential threats to aircraft and passengers.
While TSA officers are screening for weapons or other harmful items and they find an illegal substance, it will be reported to local law enforcement, according to the TSA.
CAN TEXANS LEGALLY PURCHASE POT IN OTHER STATES?
Yes, Texas residents can purchase both legal recreational and medical marijuana in other states.
Just like alcohol, anyone purchasing recreational marijuana in Colorado or New Mexico have to be at least 21 years old.
For medical marijuana in Oklahoma or Louisiana, you need a medical marijuana card.
CAN YOU CONSUME MARIJUANA AND THEN TRAVEL BACK TO TEXAS?
Yes, but only if you’re not driving and don’t have any marijuana in your possession.
Under Texas Penal Code chapter 49, driving while intoxicated is not only limited to alcohol but drugs as well.
A DWI charge is a class B misdemeanor in Texas and could carry a fine up to $2,000, up to 180 days in jail and loss of a driver license for up to a year.
P.S. Cannabidoil, or CBD, was reaching its trending peak in 2018, when Rachel Syme wrote cheekily that it was stalking her around the city “like the monster from ‘It Follows.’ ”
Despite being “deeply wary of the nouveau-wellness movement,” she finds herself, tongue aloft, being dosed by a Coloradan named Bodē.
“After ingesting it,” she writes, “I thought I felt something, a creeping sensation of serenity.
I walked over to the East River and sat on a bench facing the water for almost an hour, feeling tranquil and unruffled, as if my nerves had been soaked in chamomile tea.”

Julius Winfield Erving II (born February 22, 1950) known by the nickname Dr. J, is a retired basketball player who helped popularize a modern style of play that emphasizes leaping and playing above the rim in his career at the ABA and the NBA. He helped legitimize the ABA and was the best-known player in that league when it merged into the NBA after the 1975–76 season.
He won three championships, four MVP awards, and three scoring titles with the ABA’s Virginia Squires and NY Nets and the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers. He is the eighth-highest scorer in ABA/NBA history with 30,026 points. He was well known for slam dunking from the free-throw line in slam dunk contests and was the only player voted MVP in both the ABA and the NBA. The basketball slang of being posterized was first coined to describe his moves.
He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame and was named to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time team. He was named by Sports Illustrated as one of the 40 most important athletes of all time. He was inducted into the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame.
Many consider him one of the most talented players in the history of the NBA; he is widely acknowledged as one of the game’s best dunkers. While Connie Hawkins, “Jumping” Johnny Green, Elgin Baylor, Jim Pollard, and Gus Johnson performed spectacular dunks before his time, he brought the practice into the mainstream. His signature dunk was the “slam” dunk since incorporated into the vernacular and basic skill set of the game in the same manner as the “crossover” dribble and the “no look” pass. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

In a strategic move that spans continents, Medela, the globally renowned healthcare company celebrated as North America's most trusted breastfeeding brand, has disclosed its intent to separate its wound care division into a distinct global entity. Central to its portfolio will be Medela's acclaimed Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) product line and the array of associated services.
Meeting Global Wound Care Challenges
Chronic Wounds: An Alarming Global Issue Chronic, non-healing wounds pose a pressing global public health challenge, imposing substantial physical and economic burdens on both patients and healthcare systems. These chronic wounds encompass a spectrum of conditions, including pressure injuries, diabetic foot ulcers, arterial and venous insufficiency ulcers, traumatic wounds, burns, and post-surgical incisions, among others. Innovations Beyond Borders
Medela and medaxis: Joining Forces The forthcoming standalone wound care enterprise will seamlessly integrate state-of-the-art wound therapy technologies from medaxis, thus providing unique solutions to accelerate healing and enhance health outcomes. The Medaxis technology not only promotes neovascularization and tissue growth but also significantly boosts cellular activity and circulation. Moreover, it plays a vital role in reducing bacterial loads. Recognizing its significance, the technology has garnered an FDA Breakthrough Designation, thereby further strengthening the new wound care company's comprehensive approach to wound healing. Underpinning this approach is the support of a robust business model and a well-established network, both with a clear focus on catering to a broader audience of healthcare professionals and patients. The pivotal collaboration has been made possible through the active involvement of Medaxis, a Swiss medical technology firm operating under the umbrella of Olle Larsson Holding (OLH).
New Leadership for a New Venture
Jeff Castillo: Appointed CEO of the Standalone Wound Care Company Effective December 1, Jeff Castillo, the current Executive Vice President of Medela Americas, will take the reins as the CEO of the new wound care company. With a distinguished track record in medical device leadership positions, including roles at industry giants like Johnson & Johnson (J&J), Abbott, and Merz, Castillo brings a wealth of experience, underscored by a deep understanding of the wound care market, particularly the NPWT portfolio. His appointment signifies a perfect alignment of expertise to steer the new autonomous wound care company. "I am honored and excited to lead the new wound care company," expressed Castillo. "Medela has an enduring legacy founded on remarkable medical vacuum technology. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with these dedicated professionals to redefine the standard of care through wound care solutions driven by Medela's medical vacuum technology and fresh medical innovations from medaxis."   A Seamless Transition and Commitment to Customers The new wound care company will maintain its product shipping operations at Medela's facility in Elgin, Illinois. Current medaxis staff, along with their leadership, as well as existing members of the Medela wound care team, will transition under the guidance of Jeff Castillo, effective December 1. Manuel Ruiz-Aguilera Pleads Guilty - Identity Fraud
Tumblr media
Foreign National Manuel Ruiz-Aguilera Pleads Guilty to Role in Identity Fraud Scheme. (STL.News) A foreign national pleaded guilty today for his role in a scheme to sell identity documents belonging to U.S. citizens to undocumented noncitizens and others residing within the United States without lawful authority. According to court documents, Manuel Ruiz-Aguilera, 44, of Mexico, and his co-conspirators sold government-issued identity documents, including Government of Puerto Rico-issued birth certificates and corresponding U.S. social security cards, to undocumented noncitizens residing within the United States.  Ruiz-Aguilera sold the documents to undocumented noncitizens so they could assume the identities of U.S. citizens and/or fraudulently apply for other identity documents in that person’s name in order to reside in the United States.  Ruiz-Aguilera and his co-conspirators knew these documents pertained to real people. Ruiz-Aguilera was arrested in Mexico in February 2022 pursuant to a U.S. request for his extradition.  In March 2023, he was extradited to Puerto Rico. Ruiz-Aguilera pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit identification fraud by possessing, producing, and transferring identification documents.  He is scheduled to be sentenced on August 29.  A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney W. Stephen Muldrow for the District of Puerto Rico, Deputy Director and Senior Official Performing, the Duties of the Director Tae D. Johnson of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and Chief Postal Inspector Gary R. Barksdale of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, made the announcement. The charges are the result of Operation Island Express, an ongoing, nationally-coordinated investigation led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Chicago, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), and IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) offices in Chicago, in coordination with HSI San Juan.  The Illinois Secretary of State Police; Elgin, Illinois, Police Department; Seymour, Indiana, Police Department; and Indiana State Police provided substantial assistance.  The HSI Assistant Attaché office in the Dominican Republic and International Organized Crime Intelligence and Operations Center (IOC-2), as well as various ICE, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, DSS, and IRS-CI offices around the country, provided invaluable assistance. Trial Attorneys Frank Rangoussis and Marie Zisa of the Criminal Division’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Anderson for the District of Puerto Rico are prosecuting the case. The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs worked with prosecutors to prepare the extradition request for Ruiz-Aguilera.  The department thanks the Government of Mexico for their assistance in arresting and extraditing Ruiz-Aguilera.
