COVID-19 Vaccine’s very low risk Graphically illustrated. This graphic was adapted from one that appeared in the Los Angeles Times. I received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine over 3 weeks ago. Like many people in my situation I was a bit concerned. Then I thought back to the many risky things I discussed in my career as a public health professional. This risk is lower than many, many risks we accept daily and is lower than many other vaccines. If you consider the damage done by SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) and you compare it with the tiny risk then the choice becomes clear. If, after a discussion with your primary care provider you think one vaccine is better for you and there is plenty of vaccine supply where you are, then opt for the vaccine that’s marginally better. If, however, there is only one vaccine available to you - Take It! The reason for the pause in the J&J vaccine was to alert medical professionals and potential patients as to what signs to worry about so they could be treated. You can be assured if they care that much for that one person in over a million, (in the case of the J&J vaccine), you can be sure they are being careful. We spent a pretty awful year dealing with the pandemic. Now we have the opportunity to stop this killer. That means the vast majority of the population vaccinated. Let’s end this - if you haven’t already, please get vaccinated. I arrived early for an appointment I thought was inside only to find a very, very, very long line of cars. An hour and twenty minutes later we arrived at the outdoor vaccination station. So it was a jab through the window a bit of waiting to be sure I was okay and I was done. I received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine so it was only 1 shot. It’s been 7 hours and so far no side effects.
