Tool case for the hammer drill I use at work. We were keeping it in its cardboard box, but that was starting to fall apart and wasn’t long enough to hold the drill bits that we use.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dados in side panels and dry fitting with top and bottom panels before glue up.
Tumblr media
The lid was then separated from the box by running all 4 sides on the table saw.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dividers were made with interlocking plywood sections which were dado’d, glued, and brad nailed together, and then located into the box.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cabinet hinges were installed on the lid with a kreg jig. The support piece was milled to a thickness that matched the depth of the lid so it fit perfectly.
Tumblr media
Finished case lined with cardboard as padding for the tool and accessories! Questions, comments, and suggestions are always welcome!

Last night I had a dream that I got an incredible deal on a shitton of red oak lumber, and genuinely all day today I keep thinking about my impending lumber delivery and getting excited before remembering that it was just a dream and being crushed. What the fuck

I recently learned about this cool little thing.
Tumblr media
This is my writing desk. I have it because I send out a fair number of physical letters and cards, and wanted a way to organize my stationery. I picked this up at auction a few years back, and aside from replacing the handles (it was missing one) and the leather on the desk being in severe need of replacement, it's in very good condition. The auction house said it was from 1890, but I've learned to take that kind of thing with a grain if salt.
The other day, though, one of the woodworking channels I follow talked about something.
Tumblr media
This is the side of the drawer in my desk. It is held together by a Knapp joint. Knapp joints are kind of if interesting. They were developed as an alternative to dovetail joints, and unlike dovetail joints were done using a machine. This made Knapp joints faster, cheaper, and more reliably square than dovetail joints which had to be done by hand.
The Knapp joint, and of course the Knapp jointer, was developed in the 1870s and became popular in the 1880s. For a time any carpentry shop in America had one and used it copiously.
Unfortunately, this made it kind of synonymous with fast, cheaper furniture (there were also decorative trends of the time related to this).
Which meant in the 1900s when they figured out a way to make dovetail joints with a machine, the Knapp joint was abandoned overnight. If a piece of furniture has a Knapp joint it was almost certainly made between 1880 and 1900, meaning my writing desk probably was made in 1890.
While the Knapp jointer was a ubiquitous tool in American woodworking for a space of about 20 years, there are no remaining examples of this machine. It was patented so I believe someone could make a reproduction, but thus far there hasn't been sufficient demand for one.

Sunday woodworking with my daughter to make a birdfeeder inspired by @fischotterkunst :
Tumblr media
Mock up with suet holder with the placement of the ends and sides. The bandsaw was used to cut out the ends, and then the end pieces were used to set the jointer to make the sides match the angle of the roofline.
Tumblr media
The feeder was assembled with an air powered brad nailer, much faster and cleaner than screws.
Tumblr media
I am especially proud of how the roof panels came together. This reinforces that woodworking isn’t about getting exact measurements, it is about relative measurements. The peak of the end was used to set the jointer so that the roof panels would match up. The actual angle doesn’t matter, it is using the parts for the setup of the tool that does. (I really should have a picture of that and I may mock it up later for another post)
Tumblr media
Here’s the block holder as it sits inside the feeder. It was too dark to get a photo of it hanging outside, so I’ll amend this post tomorrow.
Here’s to more avian visitors!

The obnoxious thing about woodworking communities online is that you'll ask about the best tool to buy and the responses always break down into:
50% say "oh you absolutely cannot buy the cheap version, it'll never do what you want. You HAVE to spend $2000 on the best version. What do you mean you can't fit an 8 foot table jointer into your garage? I guess you'll have to move to a bigger house then"
25% say "oh, you use power tools? Psh, I just use hand tools and I've actually always found that my work is vastly superior to people who use power tools"
and 25% say "idk, I've been using this cheap piece of shit from Harbor Freight for like 8 years and it's been doing okay"
And which one of those groups is right is always different depending on the fucking tool
