Been thinking a lot about my dear friend who passed away July 19, 2018. Long live the legend of @jonschnepp. Jon, thank you for sharing your talents, friendship, and your deep passion for art and life! We will continue to spread your magic! This is a sculptural portrait I created of him for the amazing memorial art show that Holly @bettydrapers_fatsuit (his widow) organized for him in 2018. Originally I just wanted to make something as if he was still alive and it would be his birthday gift. I knew he’d love a demon with a badass weapon. I didn’t plan for it to be a portrait, but as the pieces started coming together, surprisingly it started to look like him. Materials: skunk vertebrae for the hips, squirrel paws for the feet, lizard claws for hands, arms, ribs, and spine are bat bones, ermine jaw for mouth, I used a piece of lizard skin for the tongue, coyote vertebrae for the head, frog vertebrate for the forked part of the weapon and sting ray barb as the sword part of the weapon. Click the link in the bio for video… I painted this portrait of Jon Schnepp after he finished this level of the big game in 2018. He was a mentor, director and all around best buddy ever, and I miss him something terrible. He will forever remain a five star human in my brain and in the brains of dozens of others! After a 30 year friendship, I felt a burning desire to do a tribute mix that featured his brilliant comedy. The logos, cover art and posters in this piece represent most of the shows and books he's known for. I had the distinct pleasure of working with him on many occasions and cherish those memories. His credits vary wildly so I didn't notate everything in the video, but added hashtags. I will say that the samples of Mr. Schnepp come from the Collider podcasts. If you remember him fondly or never heard of him, this should leave you howling with laughter, or at the very least; grinning wide. Jon Schnepp, the director of Adult Swim’s brilliant Metalocalypse, is suffering from an undisclosed medical condition that has left him unconscious and hospitalised in critical condition. I don’t do so well with loss. Rarely when a public figure passes, let alone a family member, am I quick to make a tribute in art form. For whatever reason though, and somewhere along the way I heard somebody describe Jon Schnepp as being Uatu the Watcher, and I just had to draw this. It’s been over a year now. I felt like I knew Schnepp. His passion and enthusiasm for comics was infectious and something I resonated with majorly, and well, really miss the big guy. I drew this little sketch back in April, and am just now getting around to coloring it. This humble tribute goes out to @bettydrapers_fatsuit, @enthusiamy, @rmburnett, @coyjandreau, @johncampea, all the rest of the @collidervideo that worked with Jon and all of his many fans and appreciators. Way back on #colliderheroes episode 61 (I think) @jonschnepp shown my drawing of him with a bunch of comicbook heroes around him. I took more time with this ink drawing of him. Jon used to say on the show, to artists of all mediums who tweeted about information on how to get your stuff out there, "just do it". So, with Jon's advice (and others poking me) I decided to do it and try to be a professional artist a while ago.
