Ava hates crying. You don't cry in front of others, even your parents or sister. It's a bit too much to deal with, plus then they have to try and comfort you when it's really your problem, not theirs.
And then you sister gets returned home with a flag covering her face, crest laying on her chest.
You don't cry then. Not in front of them anyways. You have a room and all sadness would be contained there. Dreams of her body at your feet don't leave the room nor your mouth. Your falchion bloodied and a deep slice across her body, from shoulder to hip. You stay quiet.
You took a break from being a captain to help your mom with the den. She really needed it. Her eyes would stare and she would freeze for lengths of time, until realizing that the fries were burnt to char in the oil.
You leave to hunt her killer. It shouldn't be that hard. Pirates can barely differentiate north and south at high noon, their strategic skills are not going to be good.
The crew you found was dumber than you expected. Well, the captain was. The Triton was smart in combat.
You stay in their crew to travel with less suspicion. You tell them that the death of your sister caused you to switch sides (it hadn't.) and that you are not longer a part of the navy (you are).
The hammocks are cramped but at least they aren't bedrolls. They rock with the bobbing of waves. You sleep.
Her body is at your feet again. She asks if you hate her. If you want her dead. If your blade was always that red. If this is what you want.
You wake up. Your chest hurts (as it usually does once you wake up). Your nose and eyes burn. It could have been worse.
Then the captain looks over with his usual grin faded with exhaustion and concern. Unfortunate.
He asks if you are okay. And you say yes. He pushes.
Are you okay? Answer honestly.
And that shouldn't have been enough to make you cry. How weak are you to weep at such a meager display. But here you are with tears in your eyes, begging to fall.
He walks over. Sits on the cold planks. He asks about home.
She was home. It hurts. More. You want to leave, but it would only make him more concerned. So you roll over, away from him, and try to sleep. The tears rolled down your nose while you tried. You do, eventually.
You wake up.
And he is sitting at the wall beside you hammock with drool slipping down his face.
He is just like her. And it doesn't hurt.

Before I pass out just thought I'd let you guys know that there is no universe where both Ferin sisters make it out alive.
One will always be destined to mourn the other. A tragedy that unfolds no matter how you look at it. There will always be a grieving mother, a father determined to not lose two daughters, a casket covered in flowers and empty condolences. That's just how it is, and how it always will be.

i needed to draw something before my lack of self esteem got to me so i went back to my wip ayva ref decided fuck it and got silly with it. im not sure if there's a lot to comment on here. in terms of abstract bird pins im happy with jay's which is obv a falling bird like icarus, but idk exactly what ayva's should look like. the little scrimble i did is meant to be like a bird craddling the pin / looming over it in an intimidating way. this is very rough but i think u get the idea.

Me thinking about how Ayva joined the crew like oughghgh. I think maybe me and Twigg has had a different image of how it happens, and I've never really talked about how I conceptualised it, SO HERE IS A POST FOR YOU.
So Ayva and the Riptide Pirates first came in contact at Joaldo. Ayva is very firmly on the side of the Navy and actually sets fire to the boats of the pirates to trap them on the island and leave them stranded, like they're NOT playing around here, it's all bad vibes. A lot of panic sets in but Gillion is like. Champion of the Undersea, Hero of the Deep, and with the big fuck you power of Destiny is able to put it out.
Ayva and Gillion basically just lock eyes and get in a fight, and it's really intense, but Gillion notices that Ayva isn't really.. Evil. Listen, he checked, and for a split second he saw kind eyes, and he is therefore legally obligated to give Ayva a chance to redeem themselves. This makes Ayva even angrier and she looks right about to maybe kill him, but while they've been distracted the pirates have organised their getaway, and Chip intervenes to drag Gillion away. Ayva thinks about stopping them but Gillion's words did hit her in a certain way, and they just decide to leave them be, letting the pirates get away. Ayva basically tells themselves that the Navy took over Joaldo anyways, which was the goal, so it doesn't matter (the first stage is denial).
Ayva probably takes the opportunity to interrogate people to try and find out more details about Jay's death, but it doesn't get them anywhere, and they're just left thinking while they get everything in order at Joaldo. Gillion's words have definitely had an affect on her, and it starts to sink in that Ayva hasn't been getting anywhere with their current strategy. Ayva thinks a lot before having the brilliant idea that they SHOULD take up Gillion on his word, and just fucking infiltrate the pirates!! Uh oh!!! So Ayva tracks down the Riptide Pirates!!!!! UH OH!!!!!
Ayva ditches the Navy without telling anyone the reason why except their family, so RAFT is basically having some... Internal issues while they try to cope with the disappearance of a pretty important Navy figure. Surely this will have no consequences later (KIRA......)
Anyways, Ayva catches up with Gillion and Chip and is like, "Oh hey, you really changed my mind and I realised the Navy is bad, you should make me a part of your crew." It's super sus but news has already spread about Ayva ditching the Navy, so it is a bit more believable. Gillion is like, "Wow, this is great, I'm glad you changed your mind!! Sure!!!" but Chip is soooo suspicious. For obvious reasons. And he is right. But Gillion manages to convince Chip that they should give Ayva a chance, so Chip reluctantly agrees. Do you want to add Ayva to your crew? WARNING: the following decision may have significant consequences.
Anyways, yeag, so then they proceed to go on some fun adventures. I'm aware if we went by the original timeline there wouldn't be that much time for them to bond, so events are probably shuffled around or maybe some original stuff is added.. But yeag, basically they get to have a lot of fun, do some stupid shit, and Ayva's weakness is revealed. Gillion shows that he really trusts Ayva and gives her the third necklace from Desire Island that him and Chip hadn't known what to do with, and Ayva realises just how fucked they are. Whenever Ayva thinks of them getting hurt, she's scared, because they don't want them to die like Jay. Ayva is really attached to the crew, and so they know they have a really difficult decision ahead of them.
THE BLOCK MAN THE BLOCK..
Okay so this is closing the end of this little tangent. But I think in the room where the Albatrio had initially spilt their secrets, Ayva also doesn't answer what her biggest secret is, but for a different reason. Ayva doesn't usually freeze up, but probably the biggest ultimatum of their entire life is flashing right before their eyes and they don't know how they're meant to deal with that, so she doesn't say anything. Chip gets REALLY mad at Ayva, he still doesn't entirely trust them and this basically just affirms his mistrust, but Ayva doesn't even say much of anything. She just becomes quiet and they keep to themselves.
When Jayson comes out, and the truth comes out about what had been Ayva's intentions, Gillion is just destroyed and Chip is ready to ditch her. Jayson tells Ayva to leave the pirates behind and to come back to the Navy, and Ayva is still quiet. And then Ayva is just like "FUCK YOU" and 1v1s their dad and tries to beat the shit out of him. Gillion and Chip get the most intense whiplash of their life as Ayva is just absolutely trying to knock out their dad, Gillion is left pogging and champing and Chip is staring like so surprised. Anyways, FUCK JAYSON, they escape the BLOCK and Ayva is undeniably a fucking Riptide Pirate now.
Chip and Ayva have not been getting along, but yo Chip daps Ayva up because that was the most METAL shit that's ever happened. And Ayva is so like utterly done with the Navy man, they're not going to let anyone hurt her boyz, they're her boyz.
Anyways, yeah. Hope that helps contextualise this post.

Scrubby, what so you think about the idea that Ayva Ferin was just their gun to the navy. A tool. Do you think about how Jay Ferin's gun has been a symbol of freedom, and Ayva's a tool of oppression. Jay didn't want to shoot Gillion, but Ayva has willingly raised their gun at him.
When Ayva holds Drey Ferin's gun, what does she feel. Does is feel heavy in their hands? Do they hold it up and their mind wanders to Kira, and what Kira must have felt like on this side of the gun? Does Ayva dwell on how steady her hands are where most people's would tremble, does it scare her to realise they're steady like they were just an unfeeling, immovable weapon primed to fire at whatever target is next.
Why is Ayva so scared to drop their rifle? What are they afraid of losing? What are they afraid of admitting? Maybe the length of a rifle helps them keep their distance from others. Maybe they're afraid of who'll be the next to carry it if she doesn't.
Do they think about the time they showed Jay how to hold a rifle straight? Does she remember it to comfort herself, to remember when Jay smiled? Or to guilt themself, to remember how they were complicit in what happened to Jay? Does Ayva willingly relive that everytime they hold up their rifle?
Anyways.

canary!ayva is such a funny character, you beat the shit out of two losers in the middle of a battle and end up joining them in the hopes of doing some espionage nonsense and then realize that not only is one of them your ex girlfriend's brother but also in the month you've been on their ship they have treated you nicer then your own father has for the last fifteen years, despite, again, you beating the shit out of them when you first met

thinking abt canary au ayva. im so used to jay with bow and arrow and gun that the idea of ayva's skill set being "beats the absolute shit out of you" is crazy. i realise that like that would mean no one in the trio of ayva, chip or gillion is a ranged fighter, they're all melee bitches. idk like ayva probably could use a ranged weapon if it came down to it, but i think she's very "im going to kill you with my bare hands".

do you want to talk about the canary au i think we should talk about the canary au
I could have probably typed something here but instead I listened to A Sadness Runs Through Him by The Hoosiers and drew all of this so that the images wouldn't be stuck in my head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because the ID is so long it's going under the cut:
The following are pages drawn in MS Paint of JRWI:Riptide characters, with the lyrics 'The Hoosiers - A Sadness Runs Through Him' accompanying story beats of the Canary AU. Colours represent different characters: the color red associated with the Navy, purple with Ayva, blue with Gillion, crimson with Chip, and orange with Jay.
The first page starts with a close-up of an epaulette, "people are puppets held together with strings" which zooms out to show Ayva in their Navy uniform, a stamped Navy document beside her labelled 'AYVA FERIN' reading the lyrics, "there's a beautiful sadness that runs through him".
The next frame transitions in with Ayva's missing poster on a pole in the background, the lighting of the shot highlighting Gillion and Chip's wariness as they look on at Ayva speaking (Chip's expression more hostile than Gillion's). Gillion recalls the moment with the lyrics, "as he asks me to pray to the God he doesn't believe in…." The frame is pulled back as Ayva waits for a response, cast in shadow as she stands opposed to the pair. Gillion closes the distance between them, a shot of Ayva's eyes showing their surprise before they look up and the two grasp each other by the forearm. Ayva who has previously been coloured red is now purple. Ayva looks stern, and Chip has his back turned as he still looks skeptical, but Gillion smiles feeling self assured.
Split into three panels: Ayva is framed between two similar panels of Gillion and Chip, their younger selves smiling with their older selves standing behind them, "time and again boys are raised to be men". Some shading highlights their three matching pendants.
A young Jay smiles up at Ayva, having struck a bullseye with an arrow after having missed a couple of times, "impatient they start…….." ..only to be followed by an older Jay with blood dripping from her mouth, "..FEARFUL THEY END".
In a collage: in one drawing Ayva's hair is flared up, another Ayva is holding an injured Gillion close, and another Ayva takes a hit to protect an injured Chip, "here was a man mourning"- Three drawings capture an identical scenario, Ayva cradling the deceased body of Gillion, of Chip, of Jay, the line finishing, "TOMORROW…" There is a close-up of Ayva's tearful and grief-stricken expression, "he drank but finally drowned in his sorrow……"
The next page starts with a black background to represent the BLOCK. Ayva is standing up to Jayson, fire blazing around them, "he could not break surface tension". There's a closeup of Ayva, hair alight and eye blazing orange as she asserts, "(he) looked in the wrong place for redemption……."
The words continue in purple, "don't look at me with", then blue, "those eyes". Gillion's sparkling as he watches on with an eager 'I told you so' expression, Chip looking completely shocked. The trio run together out of the BLOCK, "i tried to un-heave the ties…." Ayva looks back down a hallway to Jayson at the other end, cast in the light of outside of the BLOCK while he remains in the dark, the page now transitioning to white. "Turn back the time that drew him………."
Ayva looks sad as she looks back, but her expression hardens as they reach up to their pendant, "but he couldn't be saved."
Mirroring the earlier frame, there is a zoomed out shot of Ayva looking back, only now looking back at the whole of the BLOCK. It stands in the distance coloured red, while she stands in the foreground a purple silhouette, a purple shadow dividing her and the crew's boat from it. The page ends, "A SADNESS RUNS THROUGH HIM."

sorry i never wrote that eldritchstrings fic i got distracted you know how it is
Oh no, I totally get it, no worries. Anyways, this is the perfect time for me to ramble at you about canary Ayva. I dunno whether you had different thoughts on this but big ramble ahead.
Last night I was thinking about when Ayva left the Navy and who she got in contact with before "deserting" and I started thinking about their relationship with Fay and wondering how close they were. I wondered if Fay had said she was proud of Ayva, if she had told Ayva she was one of her favourites, if she'd ever assured them that Ayva was destined for greatness. I thought about if Ayva had written to Fay and what changed without her even realising.
Ayva had done everything right, she had conducted her forces with an efficiency and ruthlessness that was unparalleled, they had taken Joaldo and completed every other mission before that. But Ayva hadn't found any information on Jay's her late sister's death that they didn't already know, and they knew they weren't getting anywhere in their current position. So they write to her grandmother, detailing how they'd sent out her final orders and was sure that her crew would continue to be just as efficient without her (because they were the 'finest crew they know') and assured Fay that this mission was going to go just as smoothly as any other.
It takes a while for Ayva to recieve a message in response. It was shorter than what she was used to, and almost seemed... Dissuasive. But Ayva overlooked it because what was important was that Fay had given her blessing. Ayva had probably just imagined it. Maybe Fay was just sensitive about it. It was hard living with Jay's death.
Ayva didn't think about it for long because she soon became too preoccupied with the adventures of the Riptide pirates. On occassion, of course, they remembered Fay and would continue to wait patiently for another update from their grandmother, but they ultimately decided not to dwell on the radio silence. They were undercover so it made sense Fay wouldn't be in contact. Nothing was wrong. They had thought nothing was wrong.
But then Ayva started uncovering the real truth behind Jay's death and she couldn't help but pull out the letter and read it back over again and again. Instead of worry she saw disappointment in their grandmother's words, and she thought about how quickly and easily Fay had seemingly dropped contact with her. Chip assured her, "That's not how family should treat each other." Gillion told them, "I know how hard it is to find out you were nothing but a weapon." Drey just shrugged, he wasn't surprised. He wasn't surprised. Why was Ayva surprised? Why had Ayva been so trusting?
So anyways yeah :)
