Carol Diann Johnson was born in the Bronx, New York City, on July 17, 1935, to John Johnson, a subway conductor, and Mabel (Faulk), a nurse. While Carroll was still an infant, the family moved to Harlem, where she grew up except for a brief period in which her parents had left her with an aunt in North Carolina. She attended Music and Art High School, and was a classmate of Billy Dee Williams. In many interviews about her childhood, Carroll recalls her parents' support, and their enrolling her in dance, singing, and modeling classes. By the time Carroll was 15, she was modeling for Ebony. "She also began entering television contests, including Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, under the name Diahann Carroll." After graduating from high school, she attended New York University, where she majored in sociology, "but she left before graduating to pursue a show-business career, promising her family that if the career did not materialize after two years, she would return to college.

Carroll's big break came at the age of 18, when she appeared as a contestant on the DuMont Television Network program, Chance of a Lifetime, hosted by Dennis James. On the show, which aired January 8, 1954, she took the $1,000 top prize for a rendition of the Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein song, "Why Was I Born?" She went on to win the following four weeks. Engagements at Manhattan's Café Society and Latin Quarter, nightclubs soon followed.

Carroll's film debut was a supporting role in Carmen Jones (1954), as a friend to the sultry lead character played by Dorothy Dandridge. That same year, she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role in the Broadway musical, House of Flowers. A few years later, she played Clara in the film version of George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess (1959), but her character's singing parts were dubbed by opera singer Loulie Jean Norman. The following year, Carroll made a guest appearance in the series Peter Gunn, in the episode "Sing a Song of Murder" (1960). In the next two years, she starred with Sidney Poitier, Paul Newman, and Joanne Woodward in the film Paris Blues (1961) and won the 1962 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical (the first time for a Black woman) for portraying Barbara Woodruff in the Samuel A. Taylor and Richard Rodgers musical No Strings. Twelve years later, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her starring role alongside James Earl Jones in the film Claudine (1974), which part had been written specifically for actress Diana Sands (who had made guest appearances on Julia as Carroll's cousin Sara), but shortly before filming was to begin, Sands learned she was terminally ill with cancer. Sands attempted to carry on with the role, but as filming began, she became too ill to continue and recommended her friend Carroll take over the role. Sands died in September 1973, before the film's release in April 1974.

Carroll is known for her titular role in the television series Julia (1968-71), which made her the first African-American actress to star in her own television series who did not play a domestic worker. That role won her the Golden Globe Award for Best TV Star – Female for its first year, and a nomination for an Primetime Emmy Award in 1969. Some of Carroll's earlier work also included appearances on shows hosted by Johnny Carson, Judy Garland, Merv Griffin, Jack Paar, and Ed Sullivan, and on The Hollywood Palace variety show. In 1984, Carroll joined the nighttime soap opera Dynasty at the end of its fourth season as the mixed-race jet set diva Dominique Deveraux, Blake Carrington's half-sister. Her high-profile role on Dynasty also reunited her with her schoolmate Billy Dee Williams, who briefly played her onscreen husband Brady Lloyd. Carroll remained on the show and made several appearances on its short-lived spin-off, The Colbys until she departed at the end of the seventh season in 1987. In 1989, she began the recurring role of Marion Gilbert in A Different World, for which she received her third Emmy nomination that same year.

In 1991, Carroll portrayed Eleanor Potter, the doting, concerned, and protective wife of Jimmy Potter (portrayed by Chuck Patterson), in the musical drama film The Five Heartbeats (1991), also featuring actor and musician Robert Townsend and Michael Wright. She reunited with Billy Dee Williams again in 1995, portraying his character's wife Mrs. Greyson in Lonesome Dove: The Series. The following year, Carroll starred as the self-loving and deluded silent movie star Norma Desmond in the Canadian production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical version of the film Sunset Boulevard. In 2001, Carroll made her animation debut in The Legend of Tarzan, in which she voiced Queen La, ruler of the ancient city of Opar.

In 2006, Carroll appeared in several episodes the television medical drama Grey's Anatomy as Jane Burke, the demanding mother of Dr. Preston Burke. From 2008 to 2014, she appeared on USA Network's series White Collar in the recurring role of June, the savvy widow who rents out her guest room to Neal Caffrey. In 2010, Carroll was featured in UniGlobe Entertainment's breast cancer docudrama titled 1 a Minute and appeared as Nana in two Lifetime movie adaptations of Patricia Cornwell’s novels: At Risk and The Front.

In 2013, Carroll was present on stage at the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards to briefly speak about being the first African-American nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. She was quoted as saying about Kerry Washington, nominated for Scandal, "She better get this award."

Carroll was a founding member of the Celebrity Action Council, a volunteer group of celebrity women who served the women's outreach of the Los Angeles Mission, working with women in rehabilitation from problems with alcohol, drugs, or prostitution. She helped to form the group along with other female television personalities including Mary Frann, Linda Gray, Donna Mills, and Joan Van Ark.

Carroll was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997. She said the diagnosis "stunned" her, because there was no family history of breast cancer, and she had always led a healthy lifestyle. She underwent nine weeks of radiation therapy and had been clear for years after the diagnosis. She frequently spoke of the need for early detection and prevention of the disease. She died from cancer at her home in West Hollywood, California, on October 4, 2019, at the age of 84. Carroll also had dementia at the time of her death, though actor Marc Copage, who played her character's son on Julia, said that she did not appear to show serious signs of cognitive decline as late as 2017. A memorial service was held in November 24, 2019, at the Helen Hayes Theater in New York City.

Die Vermessung der Körpersprache – den Gefühlen auf der Spur

Ob und wie Menschen ihre Emotionen durch Körpersprache zum Ausdruck bringen, war Inhalt einer Studie eines großen internationalen, interdisziplinären Forschungsteam unter Leitung des Max-Planck-Instituts für empirische Ästhetik (MPIEA) in Frankfurt am Main das dafür eine integrative wissenschaftliche Methodik entwickelt hat.

Wer oder was ich bin drückt sich durch die Art und weise wie wir uns bewegen aus. Was mich zu welchem Zeitpunkt geprägt hat, was in mir steckt, was aus mir spricht, ob inneres Verhalten, denken und fühlen mit dem äusseren Erscheinungsbild übereinstimmend sind oder eben nicht. Es ist Form von Kommunikation und Ausdruck. Diverse Autoren haben in der grossen Zeit der Psychoanalye vor mehr als 100 Jahren bereits das maximale Gegenstück entdeckt. Neurosen hemmen die Bewegungsfähigkeit bis hin zur kompletten Lähmung! Auf der anderen Seite steht die Produktivität, der Moment ab dem sich Motiv und Bewegung die Klinke in die Hand geben. Wie sehr muss mich etwas emotional bewegen, bis oder das mich ein Motiv in die Lage versetzt eine Handlung zu tun?

ForscherInnen des Max-Planck-Instituts für empirische Ästhetik erarbeiteten mit künstlerischen und digitalen Mitteln, wie der Motion-Capture-Technologie, die Software EMOKINE zur Vermessung der objektiven kinematischen Merkmale von Bewegungen, die Emotionen ausdrücken. Die Ergebnisse der Studie wurden jüngst im Fachjournal Behavior Research Methods veröffentlicht.

Das Team ließ hierfür eine professionelle Tänzerin kurze Tanzchoreografien vor einem Greenscreen wiederholen. Dabei sollte sie mit ihren Bewegungen unterschiedliche Emotionen zum Ausdruck bringen: Wut, Zufriedenheit, Angst, Freude, Neutralität und Traurigkeit. Um die Tanzbewegungen als Daten erfassen zu können, bedienten sich die WissenschaftlerInnen aus dem Technik-Fundus des MPIEA: So trug die Tänzerin einen Motion-Capture-Ganzkörperanzug des Unternehmens XSENS®, der mit insgesamt 17 hochsensiblen Sensoren ausgestattet ist. In Kombination mit einer Filmkamera wurden die dynamischen Körperbewegungen gemessen und aufgezeichnet. Daraufhin extrahierten die Forscherinnen und Forscher die objektiven kinematischen Merkmale (Bewegungsparameter) und programmierten die Software EMOKINE, die diese Bewegungsparameter auf Knopfdruck aus Datensätzen zur Verfügung stellen kann. Computergestütztes Tracking für Ganzkörperbewegungen Insgesamt 32 Statistiken aus 12 Bewegungsparametern wurden erarbeitet und aus einem Pilot-Tanz-Datensatz extrahiert. Die kinematischen Parameter, die erfasst wurden, waren beispielsweise Geschwindigkeit, Beschleunigung oder die Kontraktion der Gliedmaßen. „Wir haben 12 kinematische Merkmale emotionaler Ganzkörperbewegungen, die in der Literatur früherer Forschungsarbeiten separat diskutiert wurden, nun alle zusammen aus einem selben Datensatz ermittelt und die Merkmale dann einheitlich in die EMOKINE Software eingespeist“, berichtet Erstautorin Julia F. Christensen vom MPIEA. Bewegungstracking findet in den letzten Jahren in vielen Bereichen Anwendung, weil das objektive Erfassen von Bewegungsparametern Aufschluss über Intentionen, Gefühle und Gemütsverfassung von Personen geben kann. Diese Forschung braucht allerdings theoriebasierte Methodik, um aussagekräftige Schlussfolgerungen über erfasste Daten machen zu können. Mit dem Rahmenkonzept, das die Software begleitet und das sich explizit den Tanzbewegungen zur Erforschung von Emotionen bedient, wichen die WissenschaftlerInnen von bisherigen Forschungsansätzen ab, bei denen oftmals die klassischen emotionsaktionsbasierten Videoclips, wie zum Beispiel das Winken mit der Hand oder Gehbewegungen, zum Einsatz kamen. „Wir freuen uns ganz besonders über die Veröffentlichung dieser Arbeit, an der so viele ExpertIinnen, unter anderem von der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, der Universität von Glasgow und das Filmteam von WiseWorld Ai aus Portugal beteiligt waren. Hier kamen Disziplinen aus der Psychologie, den Neurowissenschaften, der Informatik, der empirischen Ästhetik, aber auch aus Tanz und Film zusammen“, resümiert Seniorautorin Gemma Roig, Professorin für Computer Science, Computational Vision and AI lab an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main. Das Softwarepaket als Open Source EMOKINE ist über die Internetplattformen ZENODOund GitHub frei verfügbar und kann mit leichten Modifizierungen auch auf andere Motion-Capture-Systeme angewendet werden. Mit diesen frei verfügbaren digitalen Werkzeugen kann nicht nur der emotionale Ausdruck von Tänzern und Tänzerinnen und anderer KünstlerInnengruppen untersucht werden, sondern auch ganz alltägliche Bewegungen. EMOKINE hilft WissenschaftlerInnen die Frage zu beantworten, wie kinematische Parameter von Ganzkörperbewegungen BeobachterInnen verschiedene Absichten, Gefühle und mentale Zustände vermitteln.

Malcolm, JB, Jude en Willem waren kamergenoten in Hood Hall aan een niet nader genoemde universiteit in Boston en wonen nu in New York City. Het eerste deel van de roman introduceert de kern van de vriendengroep in de jaren direct na hun tijd samen op de universiteit. Jude en Willem delen een armoedig appartement aan Lispenard Street, JB deelt een appartement met een decadente en rijke kunstenaarsvriend en Malcolm woont nog thuis bij zijn ouders. Malcolm is gefrustreerd door de succesvolle indrukken van zijn vrienden, terwijl hij moeite heeft om zijn eigen talent te ontdekken. JB, gesteund door zijn liefhebbende familie, is zeker van zijn artistieke carrière. Willem en Jude zijn dankbaar voor de kans om zich onder hun leeftijdsgenoten te meten en hun weg in de wereld te verdienen.

In het tweede deel komt Jude St. Francis naar voren als de hoofdpersoon van A Little Life. JB geeft Jude de bijnaam "postmens", wat betekent dat hij boven ras, etniciteit, religie en misschien zelfs ervaring staat. Jude's innerlijke verhaal onthult echter een scherpe gevoeligheid voor het hele leven, vooral als het raakt aan zijn identiteit, waarover hij zich schuldig en onbepaald voelt. Als achtergelaten kind werd hij opgenomen in een klooster, waar hij stelselmatig verbaal, fysiek en seksueel werd misbruikt. Door een ongeluk als puber kon hij niet meer lopen en kwam hij in handen van een maatschappelijk werkster, Ana. Ze moedigt hem aan om te praten over wat er met hem gebeurd is voordat hij het verinnerlijkt, maar ze sterft voordat hij dat doet. In plaats daarvan snijdt Jude zichzelf om zijn trauma te verwerken en moet hij regelmatig naar Dr. Andy Contractor om zijn wonden te laten verzorgen. Tijdens zijn rechtenstudie trekt hij andere mentoren aan, waaronder Harold Stein. Harold ontmoette Jude als rechtenstudent en terwijl Harold verblind was door het intellect van de jongeman, had de professor oprecht ontzag voor zijn morele argumenten. Na verloop van tijd ziet hij deze verdwijnen uit Jude's professionele carrière, maar nog belangrijker, uit zijn denkproces, een verlies waar Harold om treurt en waarvoor hij zich deels verantwoordelijk voelt. Jacob, Harolds zoon, werd op 4-jarige leeftijd gediagnosticeerd met een zeldzame ziekte waaraan hij op 6-jarige leeftijd overleed, wat helpt verklaren waarom hij en zijn vrouw Julia besluiten Jude als 30-jarige man te adopteren. De adoptiedag wordt slechts een beetje ontsierd door de afwezigheid van JB, die de vriendengroep boos maakt door Jude uit te buiten voor een kunstwerk. Jude lijdt aan pijnlijke episodes in zijn benen en ruggengraat als gevolg van de geslachtsziektes waaraan hij in zijn jeugd is blootgesteld. JB fotografeert hem tijdens zo'n episode en schildert het voor een tentoonstelling. Jude is woedend en Willem is onvergeeflijk. Jude verandert zijn carrièrepad van het kantoor van de openbare aanklager naar een obsceen rijke privéfirma, maar hij weigert het bijbehorende financiële voordeel van de baan te nemen totdat de lift in Lispenard Street het weer begeeft. Jude's vriend Richard is eigenaar van een semi-privé appartementencomplex waarin Jude een verdieping koopt. Jude wordt steeds dankbaarder voor de aanwezigheid van Willem in zijn leven, vooral omdat JB nu weer afwezig is, dit keer door drugsgebruik. De vrienden proberen tussenbeide te komen, maar JB's duistere kant overheerst. Zijn bespotting van Jude's handicap blijkt meer dan een van hen aankan, maar JB wordt tenminste beperkt tot het ziekenhuis en verwijderd van de drugscène. De vrienden zien elkaar weer op Malcolms trouwerij met Sophie, maar de scène is gespannen omdat JB nog steeds niet vergeven is. Willem vertrekt voor een lange filmopname en Jude, die alleen achterblijft, ontmoet Caleb Porter. De twee beginnen een intieme relatie die al snel gewelddadig en vernederend wordt. Caleb walgt van Jude's handicap en geniet ervan om hem te martelen. In een bijzonder brute scène gooit Caleb Jude naakt op straat in New York City, haalt hem terug, slaat en verkracht hem herhaaldelijk en schopt hem uiteindelijk van een lange trap af, Jude achterlatend met gebroken armen en ribben en een heleboel herinneringen waaraan hij niet kan ontsnappen. Hij herbeleeft zijn jeugd met broeder Luke, die de toen achtjarige Jude ontvoerde uit het klooster en hem dwong de prostitutie in te gaan om in zijn levensonderhoud te voorzien, terwijl hij een seksuele relatie met hem onderhield. Het gewicht van zoveel trauma wordt overweldigend en Jude probeert zelfmoord te plegen. Hij wordt wakker in het ziekenhuis, omringd door vrienden van wie hij vindt dat hij ze heeft teleurgesteld.

In het derde deel hebben Willem en Jude eindelijk de romantische relatie waar ze allebei naar verlangd hebben, maar zonder dat Willem het weet is hun seksuele relatie een marteling voor Jude. Hij reageert door zichzelf vaker te snijden, een gedrag dat zijn vrienden hard proberen te voorkomen. Jude reageert door zichzelf in plaats daarvan te verbranden, waardoor Willem zich realiseert dat Jude echt geestesziek is en dat ze niet door kunnen gaan met het hebben van een seksuele relatie, vooral nadat Jude Willem eindelijk het hele verhaal van zijn jeugd vertelt. Broeder Luke werd uiteindelijk ontdekt door de politie en Jude werd naar een tehuis in Montana gestuurd. Daar werd hij opnieuw seksueel misbruikt en bruut geslagen. Op zijn 15e liep hij weg naar Boston, in de hoop op de een of andere manier toegelaten te worden tot de universiteit, liftend en betalend met het enige geld dat hij had. Maar hij werd ziek en Dr. Traylor ontvoert hem en houdt hem vast in een kelder totdat de dokter hem zat is. Dan rijdde de dokter Jude naar een veld, liet hem los, en achtervolgde hem met de auto, overreed hem en liet hem achter om te sterven. Terwijl de andere drie vrienden de toppen van hun carrière bereiken, moet Jude beslissen wanneer hij zijn benen laat amputeren. Hij en Willem vieren hun 50e verjaardag en kort daarna komen Willem, Malcolm en Sophie om bij een auto-ongeluk. Jude kan er alleen mee omgaan door wanhopig vast te houden aan elk stukje van Willem dat hij nog kan vinden en door vriendelijkheid te betonen aan zijn vrienden en familie. Toch stopt hij met eten en doet alsof hij zichzelf niet uithongert totdat zijn vrienden en familie ingrijpen en hem streng controleren. In het laatste deel beschrijft Harold de laatste, succesvolle poging van Jude om zichzelf van het leven te beroven.

Mijn mening

9.5/10 Dit boek is een meesterwerk dat je tot in het diepst van je hart raakt. Het verhaal is droevig, aangrijpend en onvergetelijk. Yanagihara's vermogen om complexe personages te creëren die met echte menselijke worstelingen te maken hebben is echt ongeloofelijk. Een 10/10 will ik toch niet geven omdat niks perfect kunt zijn, toch heb ik nooit een beter boek gelezen dan deze.
