Julius Maada Bio, nuovo presidente della Sierra Leone

Julius Maada Bio, principale candidato dell'opposizione in Sierra Leone, è stato decretato ufficialmente vincitore delle elezioni presidenziali e torna al potere ventidue anni dopo aver brevemente guidato il Paese grazie a un colpo di stato.Bio, un ex militare di 53 anni, si è imposto nel secondo turno del 31 marzo ottenendo il 51,81 per cento dei voti, contro il 48,19 per cento del candidato del partito al potere, Samura Kamara. La notizia è stata annunciata ieri sera dal presidente della Commissione elettorale nazionale (Nec), Mohamed Conteh. Scene di gioia sono immediatamente scoppiate a Freetown, dove sono scesi in piazza migliaia di sostenitori del Partito del popolo della Sierra Leone (Slpp), all'opposizione da dieci anni. In un messaggio televisivo, Kamara ha annunciato che contesterà i risultati annunciati dalla Nec, che a suo giudizio “non riflettono i numerosi timori del suo partito riguardo al riempimento delle urne, ai voti in sovrannumero e ad altre irregolarità”.
