I watched Junji Ito Maniac: Tales of the macabre and here's what I thought of each episode 2/3
Here's Part 2 to my review on Junji Ito's new netflix anime! As always Spoilers under the cut Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Review
Continuing on with what i thought of each episode...
Episode 5: Long Hair In the attic Cont. Long hair in the attic, I remember this story and it's always felt sorta...Sad to me? From the way the episode starts and we see them interact it's really depressing...She obviously cared about this man but he seems to toss her out like there's no issue at all. One thing I really noticed was how they draw blood in this one, It looks really nice. However I think Chiemi's head isn't as pretty when depicted in the anime as it was in the manga however the scraping sounds are definitely more cringe-worthy when you actually get to hear them. Episode 7: Tomb Town I believe this one is actually based on the new translation from VIZ Media, Which as of writing this isn't out yet. I haven't read an online scantlation of it but I was fairly excited to see what it was about going in! The story is actually really interesting to me? I thought it would be sort of boring but...It was really enthralling. The twist was wild to me! The use of 3D for the corpse was actually more interesting to me than the use of it for scenery like cars!
Episode 8: Layers of Fear; The Thing That Drifted Ashore A story I've not read. Surprised yet? I'm not. One thing I thought was neat was seeing the iconic layered image in the doctors office! I've seen images of this manga online. I think the concept of someone having skin line a tree or an onion is kinda cool! The image of the peel was sort of cool but at the same time the thought is painful. I remember i had skin on my foot one time that peeled up but it was so deep...It made me think of that time and it made me cringe. the image of her dragging the blade down her skin...This whole scene was vile and made my skin crawl and my stomach turn I think this was one of the best moments of the series so far. Again with the thing that drifted ashore i felt i had read this one before? However that may have just been the feeling of gyo. Another interesting thing is Tadashi is the name of the protagonist from gyo. Nothing else interested me much aside from the idea of human beings potentially being like parasites.
Episode 9: Tomie: Photo I was most ecstatic for this episode! Tomie is a special interest of mine. My wife loves Tsukiko's character so we were both highly critical coming into this episode. They were worried about Tsukiko's voice as they had seen Demon Slayer and heard her voice actress play Nezuko but we were both surprised by the deeper voice acting the actress did for the character as it was always the sort of manner we imagined the character would speak in. Another thing I'm happy about is how this series seems to be taking Tomie almost in order (Skipping the chapter Basement)! First Tomie, then Morita hospital and now we get chapter 4 Photograph! I can't help but hope for another part or even Tomie to get its own anime but for now I was thrilled with this chapter of Tomie's animated story given both My wife and I had qualms with Tsukiko's strange redesign? Her grown out buzz/pixie cut is swapped with a side swept one? As well as her eyebrows being much thicker than remembered initially... I was also mildly off put by how Tomie's voice changed between series? It's still Monica Rial but she's changed how she speaks for the character. It's deeper for some reason? Which while not a bad change still a strange one to me. One of the most disappointing changes in my wife's opinion was the lack of a willy wonka shirt. (RIP tsukiko's willy wonka t-shirt) I also kind of hated that they seemed to cut certain parts or lines? I know that they have to mind time but they miss the scuffle at the door when tsukiko goes to join her mother. They also miss getting to see tsukiko's mother's face as well as learning her father is in the military and at his post. Small details that feel..Like they just flesh out tomie's universe more. While the episode is very nearly shot for shot there's a lot that changed (To someone like me who is...a little obsessed <3) There's almost too many changes to over look.

My relationship with Junji Ito's work.
I'll be honest with ya'. I haven't read that many manga books. But what I have read the most I think must be Junji Ito stories. And well, Berserk, but not in its entirety. Anyway, I just like horror in general, and Ito's imagination is one of a kind in that manner. What I love the most about him is that he's actually very sweet and mannered. There even are memes about him being so gentle and creating such horrific stories, next to legendary Hayao Miyazaki, who in real life is someone very stressful, and who actually doesn't deal that well with others (and his creations are some of the sweetest anime out there).
In the summer of 2019 (I think), I went with some friends to Quilimarí, a little town next to Pichidangui, a little north from me, where we stayed at some friend's granny's house. We were just 4 guys. There, something really funny happened: we were posing for a pic next to a cliff, in the border of an abandoned bridge (we were young), and my cellphone happened to fall off the cliff, taking its last photo downhills, and being destroyed by the impact. Then, I was left uncommunicated from the rest of the world for a while...
All I had was my ethernet-less tablet, where I had downloaded a bunch of mangas (which to these days I have not still read), some of which were Junji Ito's "Tomie" series. They are not my favorite from the author, but the experience of being in such an isolated place (literally in the middle of the desert, next to the sea), with some friends at an old house, reaading these chapters, was actually beatiful.
"Tomie" revolves around a girl who is capable of manipulating men around her thanks to her beauty (mostly her long, black fringed hair, her iconic mole in her cheek and her white skin), which she uses for destroying them, and/or feeding her ego. I remember loving a lot his artwork, which represent dark, roaming ideas depicted through the black and white pages with an actual brilliance from the mangaka.
I don't remember if it was after or before that, but I began to buy some manga books with his short horror stories, some of which have been translated (pun intended) to anime media, at Netflix. I remember having read some of this stories and actually having a lot of fun. Some of them had such an interesting artwork, like the classical snail-tongue girl one, or the one with the girl trapped in a family full of people with really greasy skin...
In general, the stories I have liked the most have female protagonists in them, which can say a lot about the artist and myself I think, though in general feminity is vastly represented in horror media (there even are some video essays I've watched about this in youtube). There was this exception, where the protagonist was a boy who had to watch his town being emprisoned by some kind of mist, from wich a really sexy looking guy came from it, and called the girls from the town and then devoured them, I think (don't remember that well, just how hot that guy was jjj).
So, as you can see, in Junji Ito stories you can see a lot about the anxieties of Japan's young people, focusing on small towns and their dark beliefs, joined with the sexual repression which creates literal monsters at the fog...
And THEN, you have the most sweet and funniest of them all: a short story about Junji Ito's struggle to cohabite his home with his two cats and his girlfriend. It has one of the most iconic panels of his artwork (the one with the cat biting his fingers and him screaming). I gave this one to a close friend of mine for her birthday (she loves cat as much as I do jj).
I was beginning to read the classical, all-iconic "Uzumaki", a tale about a town cursed by the spiral... Everything in it becomes a spiral, even people. It has this panel with the girl and the eye being absorbed by a hole in her head. It's dark, heavy, and brutal. I've had this book for years now, but I hadn't opened and read it. Tonight would be one hell of a night to do it. But I gotta finish my last projects for the semester. When it ends, I know I'll finally finish it.
By Jorge Leiva
pd: They'll finally make an anime about Uzumaki !! So cool !!!

My 2022 MAMA Voting
Life has been so busy that I haven’t really kept up with kpop, so much so that I completely lost track of time and MAMA 2022 came and went without my knowledge, much less participation! But in line with my goals of last year, I decided to belatedly release my opinions on the MAMA nominations for this year. As before, the first one is my vote based on the nominations presented, and then I talk about my favorite group/song for that category in general.
Best Male Group: BTS (though they really didn’t release much, I did like their new songs); I wish OnlyOneOf was nominated (their undergrOund idOl series alone is a work of art)
Best Female Group: (G)I-DLE (just based on B-sides; I haven’t liked their title tracks in a while); I wish Dreamcatcher was nominated (I say this every year, but I can dream!)
Best Male Artist: Kang Daniel (his stuff was pretty groovy this year imo); I wish DPR IAN or WOODZ was nominated (both were killing it!)
Best Female Artist: Taeyeon (one word: queen); I wish HEIZE was nominated
Best Dance Performance - Male Group: Stray Kids - “Maniac” (SKZ delivers their choreo very well); I wish ATEEZ - “Cyberpunk” was nominated (and that there was also an official choreo video instead of just concert fancams)
Best Dance Performance - Female Group: IVE - “Love Dive” (very iconic); I wish Dreamcatcher - “Vision” was nominated
Best Dance Performance - Solo: PSY - “That That prod. and feat. SUGA” (I mean... c’mon! Just getting Suga to collab and do choreography is iconic in my book); I wish Solar - “Honey” was nominated
Best Vocal Performance - Solo: Taeyeon - “INVU”; I wish Younha - “Event Horizon” was nominated
Best Vocal Performance - Group: BTS - “Yet To Come”; I wish BTOB - “The Song” was nominated
Best Band Performance: LUCY - “Play” (I really got into LUCY this year!); I wish The Rose - “Childhood” was nominated (that album is gold as well)
Best Hip Hop & Urban Music: Jay Park - “GANADARA feat. IU”
Best Collaboration: PSY - “That That prod. and feat. SUGA” (see notes above)
Best New Male Artist: Xdinary Heroes (based solely on their “Hello, World!” album alone; the others I would like to pretend didn’t happen)
Best New Female Artist: LE SSERAFIM (based on their B-sides) was given a slight edge in my book over IVE (based on their title tracks); NewJeans was a close contender but jury’s out until they release a second album!
Personal Artist of the Year Candidates: Dreamcatcher, LUCY, OnlyOneOf, Younha
Personal Song of the Year Candidates: IVE - “Love Dive”, NewJeans - “Attention” & “Hype Boy”, YooJung of OnlyOneOf - “begin”, JunJi of OnlyOneOf - “be mine”, PIXY - “Villain”
Personal Album of the Year Candidates: DPR IAN - Moodswings In To Order, Dreamcatcher - [Apocalypse: Save us], Epik High - Epik High Is Here (Part 2), PURPLE KISS - Geeklyland, SEULGI - 28 Reasons, Taeyeon - INVU The 3rd Album, Xdinary Heroes - Hello, world!

What’s your favorite junji ito’s works except his notable works like Tomie, Gyo or Uzumaki? I personally like “The Human Chair”
AAAA you are tempting me to make that long review/analysis for my favorite junji ito works anon. maybe this can sate me until i get the time to really break down my thoughts on his work. the human chair is a story that i enjoyed a lot too, i’d say it’s one of my favorites! god i’m going to work as hard as i can so that i may one day have a fraction of the creativity junji ito does. i’d say that tomie is my favorite work of his overall, but if we’re talking less non mainstream (?) junji ito stories, here’s the three that came to mind first.
i’ll try to avoid any possible spoilers in my account of these!
long dream
the recent namesake for a yan xiao fic of mine! i found the concept to be so fascinating. i’ve suffered from nightmares my entire life, so the idea of being stuck in a dream for what feels like literal decades was enough to freak me out. not to mention the iconic art that progresses to be more and more grotesque. the final image is one that i just stared at because i was so engrossed by it. really messed me up in the best of ways, as horror should.
the enigma of amigara fault
okay, okay, i know this one’s pretty popular. it just holds a special place in my heart because it’s the first work of ito’s that i had ever seen. i knew absolutely nothing about him beforehand, i didn’t even realize it was a horror manga, i just went in blind and it was great. i never thought a visual format without the aid of sound could freak me out so thoroughly. but the way ito was able to translate claustrophobia into art was just so well done that i got sucked in by it. it’s another work that upon revisiting it, i could see a lot of potential social commentary in it. which i’ll perhaps dive into when i make my definitive junji ito review one day.
the hanging balloons
when it comes to horror, i think it’s important to create a scenario where if the reader imagined themselves in it, they’d be overwhelmed by a sense of dread. the hanging balloons is an excellent example of modern cosmic horror. where the outside threat is just so big, so all encompassing, that there’s little to root for because you know it’s not going to end well. while i prefer psychological horror, this version also has its merits. the hanging balloons presents an event where human beings have little to no hope of surviving. there’s no explanation as to “why” or “how” the events take place, in true cosmic horror fashion, just surreal events that keep you turning the page.
some of my other favorites from him would be: army of one, earthbound, the window next door, black bird, she is a slow walker, snail people, mosquitoes, hair, orphan girl, little finger, babysitter, and old and ugly.

WELL a lot of the things I love about Ruvik and James are pretty similar, ironically. They’re in my top three favorite characters holy ( or unholy? ) trinity for a reason. 1.) I love their depth; James is such an ordinary, everyday guy you’d see on the street and find nothing remarkable about him, forgotten by next week — yet look at the masterpiece of a story that was shaped around him. Twenty years later I still find myself thinking about the machinations of his tortured mind. Ruvik on the other hand is a prodigy, unforgettable in both personality and appearance, and is also a victim of trauma and grief — though sadly, he also becomes a perpetuator of both, but I’m a sucker with sympathy for the devil, and as someone who has dealt with a few things he has, I can’t help but feel that empathy. 2.) The nostalgia they invoke. With James, Silent Hill 2 was one of the very VERY few things in fiction that managed to send shivers down my spine, from the story to the soundtrack to James as a whole, it will forever be with me and is just as powerful now as it was to me as a child. Even though The Evil Within is much more modern, in my opinion it’s one of the limited modern horror games that was actually good, with a compelling story — Claire de Lune gives me chills as a result. 3.) Character design. I’m a big fan of horror, and especially grotesque visual FX and body horror. Ruvik is the epitome of that. And where would we be without James’ iconic green jacket?
BONUS: Writing these two is very cathartic for me for various reasons.
𝟴. 𝗗𝗢 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗗𝗦 𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗧 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗥𝗢𝗟𝗘𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗬?
Other than my boyfriend ( who also rps! ) I don’t have any friends LMAO. However an old school friend of mine did briefly on Myspace when I introduced them to it, whether they still do or not I don’t have a clue.
𝟭𝟵. 𝗪𝗛𝗢 𝗜𝗦 𝗔𝗡 𝗔𝗨𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗣𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗦 𝗬𝗢𝗨?
Okay, I won’t lie, I’ve read very little fiction in my life. Last things I read were over ten years ago, those being A Clockwork Orange and American Psycho ( which just so happen to be two of my all time favorite movies ). Other than that I usually read stuff on medieval torture, biology, and surgery LMAO. But I will say Anthony Burgess has one hell of a mind for coming up with A Clockwork Orange; I have respect towards any author who can invent a whole new language. I know Nadsat is a mix of Russian and old Northern English so it’s more hard slang than anything, but still. I’m also a big Junji Itou fan for obvious reasons.
𝟮𝟬. 𝗗𝗢 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗡𝗘𝗘𝗗 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗖 / 𝗡𝗢𝗜𝗦𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗪𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗘 𝗢𝗥 𝗗𝗢 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗥 𝗦𝗜𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘?
Absolute silence UNLESS the music is purely instrumental and not ridiculously upbeat. Any voice be it in person or in music, and I am instantly disrupted and thrown off my train of thought. If someone is talking to me then rip my writing groove.
