This is why we love Jurgi. This one bomber jacket contains layer upon layer of surprising details. The jacket is covered in panels with heavy frayed edges. Each panel has been handsewn by his iconic 'nervous stitches'. The panels have space between them on where the seems of the bomber should be. However, the underlying construction seams are cleverly hidden. Almost like a picture with the colors inverted. But.... it doesn't stop there. Inside the bomber we see the backside of the panel stitches. Wherease many designers hide these under the lining, Jurgi's are done so well and thought out that they add a decorative finish on the inside. Such a lovely secret detail. Jurgi's stitching is something else. You can see here in the Jurgi Persoons x Dust red deconstructed waistcoat with black embroidery — 2016 combined with the Jurgi Persoons black skirt with red stitched rectangular panel and spiral waist — fall 1999 The first one has My Darkness, Revelations 20:16 (a non-existeng bible verse) and the logo embroidered. Not just regular embroidery but elevated, as if it was. Together with the words seemingly scribbled with a blotting pen, it looks capricious? Fickle? We can't seem to find an English word for 'grillig' Same in the skirt, where it was referred to as 'nervous stitching'. The red thread is stitched in seemingly random directions while following a rectangular shape. We found out we put it on backwards. Or is it frontwards? We don't know. Let's talk about the latest Belgian I have featured on the website: Jurgi Persoons. ⁠ ⁠ He's an avant garde designer that graduated from the Antwerp Fashion academy and had a short lived career from 1996 to 2003. He did, however, do a capsule collection in collaboration with Dust magazine in 2017.⁠ ⁠ Jurgi Persoons’ designs can be disturbing and arouse controversy, yet this is what makes them fascinating. Slanting hems, tweed combined with snake skin, tartan checks with finely worked embroideries create a style which is on the verge of bad taste. But despite taking these risks, his clothes are not ugly.⁠ ⁠ With each new collection, Jurgi Persoons refers to human characteristics, sentiments, situations, convictions, radical attitudes and their emotional impact. ⁠ ⁠ As he states it: “People’s aspirations for a certain ideal appearance often transpire through the mistakes they make in the search for that ideal, and that is exactly what interests me most, because their failing efforts often produce quite hyperrealistic images. Hol' up. Can we talk about this crazy stitching, which someone called 'nervous stitching' in a previous post, on this 1999 Jurgi Persoons skirt? From afar the bright red stitches follow a perfect rectangle, but only on close inspection you'll see this avantgarde detail. Just one of those quiet rebellion accents that allows you to wear underground designers to a white collar job. I mean, it is a pencil skirt after all... Oh how I wished for a physical store where these garments could be appreciated up close. It's the attention to nearly invisible details that separates the high end avantgarde from other designers and brands.
