Of Snakes and Lions  Ch-3
Tumblr media
Rated: It’s clean for now.
Pairing: JaehyunxReaderxTaeyong
Summary: Your new term at Hogwarts starts with more drama then you intended. You didn’t expect your oldest friend to have feelings for you, but you didn’t expect to have feelings for a Gryffindor jock either.
(A/N): Happy Harry Potter day everyone!
Mini Masterlist
“I can’t believe we have to go into the Forbidden Forest because you can’t keep your mouth shut in class.” She snarled. He laughed bitterly at her words.
“He was going to make us sit and finish our homework, until you opened your smartass mouth, again! Don’t try to pin this on me!” He protested.
“I wouldn’t have to open my smartass mouth if you hadn’t gotten us into detention in the first place!” She said rather loudly and Jaehyun stopped walking.
“You’re smart right?” The question caught her off guard, leaving her without a retort.
“How about you don’t shout when we are about to enter a forest full of creatures that could probably kill us?” After the brief moment it took her to register his words she huffed loudly, shoving past him.
“We just have to find some Belladonna and then we’ll be done.” He spoke as he followed behind her. She stopped a few steps in front of him and turned around, taking a few steps back after noticing the proximity.
“Do you even know what the plant looks like?” Jaehyun wanted to bite back but bit his lip.
“Of course you don’t, why would I ask. God you’re like a textbook Gryffindor.” She groaned, he furrowed his brows at her words.
“What is that supposed to mean?” He growled. And she looked him up and down like it was obvious.
“It means that you’re an airhead who got me into trouble for no reason. I have been in detention thrice. In five years, I’ve only been punished three times and one of those were unfair.” She ranted while keeping an eye on the ground for what they were here for.
“You didn’t seem to mind shoving your tongue down a Gryffindor’s throat two days ago.” He spat out, standing right beside her. Her back went rigid, a rare instance of having no response come to mind.
“I was drunk.” Even she knew it was a weak excuse, but she would hold her ground.
“So if right now, I were to ask to kiss you again, you’d say no?” His voice was deliberately low, the bastard. She lowered her lamp in hopes that she could conceal the deep red her cheeks currently felt they were.
“Yes.” She said, avoiding his gaze.
“Yes to kissing you?” His tone was sly.
“No. Yes as in I would say no if you asked.” She coughed, pushing by him again. But this time he grabbed her shoulder, stopping her right beside him.
“And what if I didn’t ask?” His voice was the afflicted whisper hers would be if she spoke immediately. Instead she gathered all her pride and pushed back.
“We need to find the plant before curfew or we’ll be in more trouble.” She was convincing both of them. He put on a smug face and shrugged, walking behind her as they searched.
After a long silence filled with only sounds of their footsteps, synchronized and the sound of leaves crunching under their feet at the same time, they came to a small lake.
“There.” She spoke, pointing to the clearing around the lake where she could make out purple flowers in the moonlight. They both rushed to it eagerly but she put an arm on his chest when a thought came into her mind.
“We didn’t get gloves.” She spoke with dread and he looked at her with confusion.
“Will we die if we touch it?” She couldn’t help the small chuckle when she saw his confused frown.
“No but it will irritate your skin, give you rashes.” She explained and he nodded, considering her words.
“Let’s go, we’ll reason with him. Get them tomorrow.” She said with evident dissapointment. He looked at her once before bending down and pulling out the whole bunch from the ground. Her eyes went wide, staring at him.
“Did you not hear what I just said? Your hands are going to get very bad rashes.” She spoke incredulously. He offered a casual shrug.
“He’s not going to listen to reason trust me. We’ll just get in more trouble. I got us into this mess, it’s fine I can handle a small rash.” He offered and smiled at her softly.
“I didn’t know the forest had a lake, it looks pretty in the moonlight doesn’t it?” He continued with a gentle voice and she turned around to face it, nodding in agreement. They stood there in silence for a while before she turned away first.
“Let’s go, we have to get those back and then take you to the infirmary.” He nodded in response and followed behind her as they made their way back to the school.
“This could be considered a human rights violation you know? Sending students alone into a dangerous forest to bring back poisonous plants.” She spoke as they walked out of the forest finally, making their way towards the school.
“What’s a human right violation?” He asked and she turned to him before rolling her eyes.
“Honestly, what do you do in muggle studies?” She asked and he gave her a sheepish smile, his dimples peeking out. She just shook her head and dropped the topic.
After they left the professor’s office, he stopped once they reached the bottom base of the stairs.
“You go back to your dorm, it’s almost curfew. I can go to the infirmary myself.” She wanted to protest but realised that it wasn’t her place to insist, instead nodding and walking away.
As she took the turn towards the entrance of her dorm her steps faltered when she saw a familiar figure standing near it.
“Doyoung?” She asked unsure, “The password hasn’t changed you know.” He blushed.
“No I’m here to give you something.” He said, shoving a small box with his foot towards her on the floor.
“I had to pull a lot of strings for this one. You better tell your lover boy I lived up to my end of the bargain, he better not go tattle to Johnny about the times I snuck into the gryffindor dorm.” She could tell he was clearly annoyed.
“Who?” Was all she could say in response, he looked at her with annoyed disbelief.
“Jaehyun, he extorted me into getting these. I’m sure it would be cute if I didn’t have to stand here for two hours with an imminent threat over my shoulders.”
“He’s not, we’re not together.” She clarified.
“I know you well enough to not pretend to care (Y/N), but he was really hung up on this. Then again, these lions are just nice sometimes.” She laughed at his frown. He was already walking away, she assumed he wanted to get back before he was caught loittering.
“Doyoung,” She called and he turned back once. “Thanks for this. The next time you need to recruit people for one of your clubs, you know I can be convincing.” She offered a knowing smile and he laughed, taking up the offer.
It took her quite a bit of muscle to finally get the box up to her room. Once there she opened it, her confused curiosity turning into a smile. She didn’t know what to think, except being grateful. In front of her was a large box on cherry cola.
“She hasn’t said one mean thing and it’s before noon, should we be worried?” Yuta asked Taeyong, who just cracked a small smile. She looked up from her plate of food.
“You know I can hear you right?” She spoke, before going back to eating her eggs.
“No insult? Did someone hex her?” Yuta nudged Taeyong.
“Are you,” He swallowed rather dramatically. “Are you in a good mood?”
“How about you eat your potato before I force it down your throat Nakamoto. For once I’d like to eat my breakfast in silence.” She quipped.
“I didn’t expect that to feel as good as it did.” He exclaimed with mock awe and she raised her fist and he laughed, ducking away.
“What about you,” Yuta turned to Taeyong after he had his full with her. “You’re awfully quiet this morning.” He put an arm around him and he clearly cowered a little under his stronger arm.
“I’m still a little tired.” He mumbled and shrugged his arm off. Yuta turned to her with a knowing gaze, they knew he always got very tired after he had one of his nightmares. But they could tell this was different.
“You better be. If you had just skipped class yesterday for no reason I would have knocked you out myself.” Her words made him look up with bright eyes.
“I’m-I’m sorry. I was asleep all day.” He stuttered and she smiled.
“It’s fine, all I got was detention because I was stuck with a mouth for a partner.” She laughed, and was relieved when she finally saw her friend’s relieved smile.
When the conversation between them mellowed down, her thoughts compelled her to glance to the other side of the hall. Jaehyun was sitting there smiling with his friends. He had a nice smile, she had to admit that. She looked away, noticing the bandage around her hand, biting her lip and looking away.
She hated feeling guilty, it was an inconsequential emotion. It made people do things that they would usually never do, it was like coercing yourself. She tapped her foot impatiently outside a classroom waiting for the students to usher out. She tried to run over her head what she would say, what words would be the most articulate, convincing and dignified. While deep in thought she didn’t notice someone stop beside her, a gentle tap on her shoulder making her jump.
“Do you have transfiguration?” Jaehyun asked and she shook her head, there went her plan to be articulate. He gave her a lopsided grin.
“Are you here to see me?” He teased.
“No, I was just standing.” She defended, mostly out of habit, so much for convincing. She bit her lip and sighed.
“I am actually, I don’t know why I said that.” Her face burned, dignified leaving the table too. He stared at her with an amused smile, crossing his arms over his chest as he waited for her to continue. Her eyes lingered over his arms for a moment, his muscles stretching his folding sleeves before she looked away.
“I just wanted to thank you, for um, the cola and picking the nightshade, how’s your hand? Did the nurse give you a tincture?” She stopped, she was blabbering. She never blabbered.
“Yeah I’m just about to go to the infirmary. The drinks were nothing, Doyoung owed me a favour.” He gave her a shy grin, scratching his head. She decided against asking to go with him.
“Yeah he didn’t seem to pleased, he was very vocal about it.” She recalled and Jaehyun chuckled.
“I wanted to ask though, how did you know I like cherry flavoured cola?” She wasn’t expecting his blush.
“I have to go, I need to get to the infirmary before the next class, see you later.” He rushed away, leaving her confused.
She sat in the courtyard when someone stopped behind her.
“What’s that?” She recognised the voice as Hansol’s, scoffing.
“Are you pretending to be a pure-blood today? It’s soda, we drink it back home.” She said, taking another sip of the drink from the bottle, enjoying it enough to smile.
“Did Jaehyun give that you?” She turned back to face him with furrowed eyes, giving Hansol the answer he needed.
“He ambushed me in the Study Hall yesterday, asking me what soda you like to drink.” He spoke as he came around to the front, gesturing her to make place on the ledge.
“Why did he do that?” She stuttered and he just shrugged, sitting down and pulling away the bottle from her hand and taking a sip.
“I haven’t learned to read minds yet (Y/N). I first assumed you did something nice for him, but then I realised this is you.” He earned a smack on his arm for that, laughing. “Then I thought maybe he owed you something, that made more sense.” She snatched the bottle away from him and drank a little more before closing the bottle tight. She found herself reluctant to tell him that he didn’t.
“The bigger question is how did he find it.” Hansol questioned and she was silently grateful for the change in topic.
“Doyoung.” She said and Hansol laughed.
“So, Taeil?” He said and she turned to him with furrowed brows.
“The headboy?” She asked with disbelief.
“Yeah, he’s like the smuggler of muggle things. Who would suspect the headboy right? Much less a Ravenclaw one.” She laughed loudly, nodding in agreement.
“Maybe that’s how he deals with N.E.W.T. pressure, speaking of how’s your preparation coming along?” The groan he offered was enough.
She had just entered the Slytherin dorm, after a long day she wanted to just lie down. While walking up to the stairs she noticed Taeyong sitting on one of the leather sofas, he was rubbing his hands the way he did when he was nervous.
“Aren’t you going to bed?” She stopped and asked, he looked up with nervous eyes, getting up and walking up to her.
“I was waiting for you.” He spoke with a small voice.
“What’s wrong?” She asked, a little worried.
“I just wanted to apologise, I didn’t meant to say-” He began but she shook her head.
“It’s okay, I know you didn’t mean to make it sound so patronising. And I’m not embarrassed over my lineage.” She smiled at him warmly, understanding that he probably felt really guilty.
“I just don’t think straight after I have one of those nightmares, after all these years. It still feels so real and I feel so powerless.” He admitted and she listened, feeling bad for him.
“I know you won’t listen, but you really should talk to someone. I’m sure the headmistress can do something. I hate watching you suffer like this.” She spoke genuinely, the sad smile he gave her breaking her heart. When she knew he wouldn’t say anything she just dropped the thought, telling him she was going to bed.
“Oh and Taeyong.” She spoke, turning around with a joking smile. He looked up at her.
“At least insult me with factually accurate terms, I’m a half-blood.” He smiled a little brighter than before and nodded.
“I’ll keep that in mind the next time I want to be a bigot.” He laughed.
