tfw you're reading a review of a book you haven't read (when we were sisters, by fatimah asghar), and can't tell whether the way it chooses to gender one of the characters—which is in tension with what's suggested by every quote it features—is justified by however the story ends, or whether it's just plain old cissexism…

#'a' review i say but actually i read multiple reviews that were like this #which did not clear up the question #although the second one misgendered the author in addition to misgendering(?) the character‚ which seemed suggestive #like really the thing that gets me—or‚ well‚ the thing that gets me in addition to the transphobia—#is just like. the fundamental refusal to entertain the ideas presented by a book even for the space of a review #like—i don't necessarily need a reviewer to have exactly the same views as i do #though of course all my views are perfect and correct so they should! :)#but i do feel as though—it's good to cultivate a certain amount of openness‚ as a reader #to empty out the space of your self‚ in order to provide a theater for the story to enact itself #and if your review doesn't feel to me as though you ever even bothered to shift your own stuffy upholstery out of the way…#idk‚ man #just seems like an intellectual failure even separate from the gender stance #bookblogging
