Kaapo Kahkonen signed with the jets this year and I just read a great article about him from the local beatwriters. Since you’re a big sharks goalie guy, would I be able to ask for Kaapo Kahkonen lore?
omg I would love to but I don't have that much lore unfortunately because I was not good at keeping up with media last year....I do know that Wild fans were ripped up about losing him bc he was such a good guy and EYE was ripped up about losing him because I loved him and he was loadbearing for Mackblack's sanity. I do think that speaks to how just kinda beloved he is on his teams by fans as someone who is maybe not the flashiest player, who isn't making highlight reel saves, but who shows up ready to play, who bonds with his other goalies, and is always ready to work hard and prove his worth. And to my knowledge never really complained that much last year, even though Sharks goalies. had so much to complain about.
Here two pieces of media that I think are critical to the Kaapo Kähkönen lore from San Jose:
Emily, the in-arena host, interviewing Kaapo while he makes pasta (like the noodles and everything) and it's so charming a) bc you can see her fall in love...girl same...(like in a professional way, not in a cringe way) and b) he's so serious about making his pasta and his salad. No one has ever taken a video about pasta-making on his off day more seriously than Kaapo. Cooking with Kaapo!!
youtube
Did he cook for his teammates...one truly wonders.... Anyway, that's one piece of lore for you: can make pasta from scratch.
The second piece of critical lore is this absolutely wild article that Sheng Peng, our resident romance novelist beat writer, wrote about Kaapo and Mackenzie...the infamous "we're an employee" article.
Preview/lines #32: Blackwood/Kahkonen have no problem alternating starts
Tumblr media
The framing of the article is wild. The photo they chose is insane. There is no part of this article that does not make me want to walk into the ocean.
I am not very aware of the Jets' game (not like out of spite I just don't know much) so I'm not sure if their goalies often bond through the shared trauma of goaltending in a flop organization or if they're normal about each other because the organization is normal. I trust that if the goalies in the Jets are prone to traumabonding, Kaapo will be in a deeply tender and codependent situationship (1a/1b) shortly. Otherwise he might be kind of chill. Professional!
I hope the Jets treat him well 🥹 he's earned a good home with a good team!!

I gotta just fucking dis Sam Rosen for a moment with the constant "Kaapo Kakko and Kaapo Kähkönen - no relation" comment.
like... YEAH OBVIOUSLY???????????? THAT'S NOT HOW THIS WORKS. it's literally the same as saying "Jack Roslovic & Jack Hughes - no relation!!!!!"

The Etymology of Finnish NHL Players a.k.a What Do Their Names Mean?
PACIFIC DIVISION 2023-2024
ANAHEIM DUCKS
URHO VAAKANAINEN
URHO /ˈurho/
A Finnish name derived from a Proto-Finnic word meaning ”man”. A poetic Finnish word meaning ”hero”.
VAAKANAINEN /ˈʋɑːkɑnɑi̯nen/
A Karelian surname based on several Orthodox given names derived from the Greek name Bakchos, meaning ”to shout”. A Finnish homonym for ”scales woman”.
SAN JOSE SHARKS
MIKAEL GRANLUND
MIKAEL /ˈmi.kɑ.el/
Derived from the Hebrew name Mikha’el, meaning ”who is like God?”.
GRANLUND /ˈɡrɑːn.lund/
A topographic Swedish surname meaning ”spruce grove”.
KAAPO KÄHKÖNEN
KAAPO /ˈkɑː.po/
Derived from the Hebrew name Gavri’el, meaning "God is my strong man”.
KÄHKÖNEN /ˈkæh.kø.nen/
A Savonian and Karelian surname possibly derived from the Finnish word käheä, meaning ”hoarse”.
SEATTLE KRAKEN
EELI TOLVANEN
EELI /ˈeː.li/

TOLVANEN /ˈtol.ʋɑ.nen/
A Savonian and Karelian surname possibly based on a given name derived from the Old German name Adalwolf, meaning "noble wolf”.
NOTES:
During the 12th century, the tradition of Finnish given names was lost due to the Christianization of Finland under the Swedish rule. By the 16th century only Christian names were accepted, which is why Finnish forms of Christian names are still widely popular in Finland despite the society being fairly secular. The tradition of native Finnish given names wasn’t revived until the 19th century.
Most Finnish surnames end in suffixes -nen or -la/-lä. The collective suffix -nen, which is more common in Eastern Finnish surnames, indicates belonging to a certain family or clan. The suffix -la/-lä, which is more common in Western Finnish surnames, creates oikonyms from the names of places, farms or small villages.
Karelia and Karelian can be used to refer to a geographical place, language, dialect or people. It is important to note that Karelian is its own language separate from Finnish. However, the Finnish language also has a Karelian dialect that is spoken in the Finnish Karelia. Finnish surnames originating from Karelia have likely been influenced by both Karelian and Finnish.
The IPA forms follow Finnish phonology even with foreign (Swedish, Russian etc.) names in approximation to how an average Finn pronounces them.
The source for most of the given names is Behind The Name. The topographic surnames are direct translations. The explanations for the rest of the surnames are either from Finnish Wiktionary or based on speculation by Finnish genealogy enthusiasts, hence the overuse of the word "possibly".
Feedback is welcome. If you have additions or notice any mistakes, please let me know!

if the rumours are true and Seattle do select Kaapo Kähkönen from Minnesota, I would just like all of you to know the time he played at the U20 tournament and made such a great save that the announcer lost his shit and called him KÄÄPÖNEN on live television.
