In "Radetzky March" Joseph Roth was portraing the family story of the fictitious family Trotta, simultaneously to the decline and fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Young Leutnant Joseph Trotta saved the life of Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria, in the Battle of Solferino. Trotta, a poor farmer, got ennobled and became a baron. Nobility ultimately leads to the Trotta family’s ruination, paralleling the imperial collapse of Austria-Hungary (1867–1918). The composition "Radetzky March" by Johann Strauss I goes with the incidents, played at important places of the story, sometimes a little apparent. . The main character is the grandson of the hero of Solferino, Carl Joseph Trotta, who is a sensitive nature, forced to be a Leutnant, but didn’t wanted to be one. Through his whole life and through the whole book there is one big topic: Death. Carl Joseph’s first love died when he was a young guy and from then on he feels followed by death. His father is a sever District Governor, but he changes touchingly with age and events. . A big power to bond readers is a special and lovable main character that isn’t totally subsumable. That’s what Roth did. The other power of this book are the great writing skills of Joseph Roth. Such a complex topic written in a way that the reader always feels close to the story, sees a human in every one, not a figure. . Everything comes and goes, so does an Empire. It is a nostalgic book, but an intelligent one. Instructive and emotionally pleasing.
