Kurt Krömer kenne ich seit er in "Late Night Berlin" gespielt wütend das Fernseh-Set demoliert hat. Schnell habe ich seine eigenen Formate entdeckt und der Mann wurde mir echt sympathisch. Wenn man mir jedoch zuvor gesagt hätte, ich würde das Buch eines Komikers lesen, hätte ich wahrscheinlich schon müde abgewunken, und dann noch was Autobiografisches! Trotzdem bekam ich Lust auf dieses Buch, wegen der Person Alexander Bojcans (Krömers richtiger Name) und weil das Thema Depression verdammt wichtig ist und nach wie vor extrem stigmatisiert und verharmlost wird. Deswegen habe ich nur schon echt Respekt, wenn ein Prominenter sein persönliches Erlebnis mit der Krankheit aufschreibt und dafür sein Privatleben preis gibt. Da stören mich auch einige Wiederholungen nicht stark und auch der meiner Meinung nach nicht hinreichende Vergleich zwischen Depressions-Outing und dem Coming-out Homosexueller hat mir das Buch nicht madig gemacht. Ich schätze es sehr, wenn ein Buch macht was es soll. In dem Falle informieren und aufklären, die Sache im Bewusstsein aufrechterhalten, tiefgründige Abstecher erwartet man im Vornherein nicht. Einfach mehr Offenheit und weniger Berührungsängste gegenüber dem Thema! Ehrlich gesagt fand ichs auch einfach interessant etwas mehr vom Privatleben Bojcans mitzubekommen. Es stimmt nicht was ich anfangs für einen kleinen Moment befürchtet hatte, dass Herta Müller mit "Der Beamte sagte" ihre oft behandelten Stoffe über die sozialistischen Terrorgewalten einfach zusammengeschoben und in Lyrik verdichtet hat! Klar, es geht wieder um ein Opfer zermürbender Verhöre des Staatsbeamten. Die Namenlose wohnt auch im Auffangslager, doch was für eines genau wird nicht gesagt, es sind keine bekannten Örtlichkeiten vorhanden. So wirkt der Text viel universeller, aber auch poetischer. Poesie ist das Stichwort, wie von Herta Müller schon bekannt sind auch hier immer einzellne Worte ausgeschnitten und zu lyrischen Collagen zusammengefasst. Trotzdem fehlt noch das Wort Erzählung, denn eine wage, trotz allem wieder ganz neue Handlung zieht sich durch. Somit schafft Müller mit diesem Buch eine neue Art Literatur, sie lässt nämlich beides verschmelzen. Da ist die Frau die zwischen Lager, Amt, Cafe und Baugrube unterwegs ist, gewisse Personen immer wieder antrifft, und ihren Empfindungen, Gewissheiten, Impressionen und Bedrohungen künstlerisch Ausdruck verleiht. Es hat mich umgehauen! Sprachlich, melodiös, atmosphärisch. Genau ist die Tonalität und das Gesmatkonstrukt des Textes gar nicht zu beschreiben. Schaut euch deswegen die zwei Beispiele an in dem ihr das Bild rüberwischt. Auch ist bei vielem nicht ganz klar wie es gemeint ist, das regt mich aber immer zum Fantasieren und Weiterdenken an. Die Tragik die Müllers Werken anheftet ist auch hier sehr deutlich, nur eben tragisch schön übersetzt in reine Poesie. Da sind Wendungen und Gebilde drin, die ich mir abnotieren und für mich selber vervielfältigen muss. I realized, yesterday's photo could have been misunderstood as pro violence. Here is a better one. Now the review: Inspired by Truman Capote, Emmanuel Carrère wrote "The Adversary", a novel about a true crime that happened in France. Jean-Claude Romand didn't only beat his wife to death and shoot his children and parents, his full life as a wealthy, high-positioned doctor at WHO was a complete lie. We have an oversupply of true crime stories nowadays. In book form they seem anyway to go a bit deeper than in podcasts or series, but why should one read exactly this book? I think the big plus is Carrère's sobriety. He follows facts and seeks the psychology behind them. He does not strew emotional catchers between them. I honored, that when he didn't know what exactly happend, he just mentioned what he knows and didn't invent anything. It seems like a quality of french literature to me, this super factual and honest writing, together with talking about the own, personal experience as the author. It gave me vibes of Annie Ernaux, Édouard Louis and Didier Eribon. I find that weird, how can literature from one country be so related? However, what stressed me was Carrère's positive approach to the murderer, how charming he spoke with him in letters and the meeting, even though he glorified no one in the text. But I saw, Emmanuel Carrère had doubts and reflected about his behavior to him. Also he let someone speak that thinks, he just brings the murderer what he wants, more publicity. An argument I can not really disclaim. I'm not a fan of the super factual writing style, but it was perfect for this story. It made me read very fast and built up this real true-crime tension, without making it a story like any other one. Emmanuel Carrère made a more profound effort! With "The Fox Was Ever The Hunter", Herta Müller wrote a deeply emotional novel about the socialist terror in her native country. Romania in the late eighties, the Ceaușescu-regime. The protagonist is Adina, she's alone at home, her husband is in the army, and she works as a teacher. One day she told the pupils to eat from the fruits of the fields and since then she is being threatened by the Securitate. Often, when she comes home, someone cut off one of the legs of her fox fur on the floor, peed into the toilet without flushing it and left a cigarette butt in the water. With each fox leg, the threat comes closer. The uniqueness of this book lies absolutely in Müller's language. It's a painful one, full of poetry, metaphors and riddles. Her describtions are not bound to objective reality, a feeling can command a room, the menace of the government is visible in the sharp leaves of the trees. That sometimes creates a distance, sometimes comes closer than anything, because it can be ultra-personal. On the first pages I really struggled with her words, so many weird descriptions about details in the city, it took so long until a plot was coming and I had the chance to connect with the characters. But then the book had me. On the emotional level Müller brings us so much. Friendship and treason. So much scope for interpretation, yet sometimes so little. Never seen literary compositions about suffering from a totalitarian state, written by someone that experienced it. "The blackness in the eye of the dictator on the wall is shining. And what is shining sees everything." It didn't reach the level of "The Hunger Angel" for me and for sure it is sometimes hard to read, but it's so worth it! The book opens different entrances to human tragedies, unusual entrances. Was für ein berührender, sprachgewandter Familienroman. Er handelt von einer deutschstämmigen Familie in Rumänien, sogenannten Banater Schwaben. Zuerst sind das Florentine, ihr Ehemann Pfarrer Hannes, und der Sohn Samuel. Später greift der Roman zurück nach den Eltern von Hannes und geht vor bis zu dem Kind von Samuel, der selber dabei immer irgendwie Ankerpunkt bleibt. Was mich von Anfang an fasziniert hat sind die Charaktere von Florentine und Samuel. Der Junge spricht lange nicht und die Mutter wird gedrängt dagegen vorzugehen. Sie lässt jedoch der Natur, ohne sich darüber zu äussern, ihren Lauf. Sie gibt Samuel ja was er braucht. Nähe, Freiheiten. Sein erstes Wort: "Zăpadă" – Schnee. Jahre später besticht er durch Sätze wie: "Ich habe aufs Wasser geschaut und mir vorgestellt, dass alle Meere und Flüsse und Bäche miteinander verbunden sind." Sohn und Mutter haben etwas Unbeugsames, Träumerisches, Naturverbundenes, das sich ganz still verhält und nicht zu benennen ist. Das war mein Höhepunkt des Buches, leider werden diese Eigenheiten bald von weiteren Figuren und Handlungssträngen abgelöst, da hätte ich mir mehr gewünscht. Das Naturnahe spiegelt sich auch in der Sprache von Iris Wolff. Es ist eine lyrische, aus dem Einfachen, aber Aufmerksamen. Das habe ich geliebt, denn auch wenn das Buch manchmal leicht verkürzt wirkte, kam ihr Ausdruck nie trivial, sondern sehr einfühlsam. Witzig war das Figurenraten. Trat eine neue Figur auf, dachte ich gleich, das wird die Tochter Samuels sein, oder, das könnte Florentines Mutter sein. Das Ende fand ich ein wenig sonderlich. Da wo gerne mit dem Kind als Symbol die Zukunft dargestellt wird, geschieht hier das Gegenteil. Der Blick geht eine Generation zurück, nach hinten. Wohl nur um die eigentliche Idee, einen Roman um eine Figur herumzubauen ohne sie immer zu fokussieren, abzurunden. Egypt in the 1950's. The protagonist Ram is part of an egyptian upper class family, but he's more oriented on Europe, so he studied in England and came back into a home country that seems to be paralysed, demanding for a change. Trying to connect with the West. That's at least what I got, when I read the story of Ram and his intellectual circle of friends as a picture for Egypt's condition at the time. But this book is full of contradictions. For example, on one hand Ram enjoys the privileges of being in the upper class and has no job, but on the other he is a communist and with no money. He is politically and culturally orientated on England, but lives in Egypt which is being attacked by England. Compared to him, the other characters were sometimes a bit one-dimensional or unreal, what can be deliberately made. So in the end I feel sorry for this lost figure Ram, who needs booze and gambling and is harsh and cynical to deal with his unclear position in the world. Not to speak about the love story in the book. But I admire his positive side-attitude, to never stop and get depressed. I like that he is not a hero and not a character to fall in love with. I got a lot about his character, but sometimes I couldn't really grab the story around it. There is so much plot which I thought that went nowhere. Also I can not say if the main thing of the book is the unique personality of the protagonist, his search for an egyptian identity, or the picture of Egypt in the fifties. It's this lost feeling, that external silence while something is trembling inside, what made me interested, what is mostly left from this book in my memory. February, 1949. Nina Sergejewna, who is a novel-version of the author Lydia Chukovskaya herself, moves from Moscow to a rural area, into a sanatory for writers. Like the booktitle says, she calls the process of writing "Going Under". Translations are her job, but secretly she also writes about her personal experiences in the sanatory. She shows a pure and loving connection to nature when walking through the birch forests in the village, which stands opposite to all the stalinist terror that she feels, heard of and will hear more of when talking to the other inhabitants. It's a place where everyone wants to forget, but she wants to know more about all the suffer, firstly because she doesn't know what the sovjet government did to her husband. And she is willful. Also towards the ex-prisoner Bilibin, to whom she slowly develops an affection. This book had me totally. The sentences are so profound and touching. It's not a fast book, it's one for the try to understand more about humans and one for the deep feeling. Chukovskaya also showed us how to understand classical poems with our sensations. The language in the book is great poetry, it made me think of a pretty bird that suffers from an accident, but now tries to fly in a remaining way that works. There is so much heart in it. "In which part of Moscow do you live, I inquired, as if the question, where one is living, could have any meaning at all, after the own children got burnt." This touched me so much. And this tension between the mentioned horrible structural terror of the state and the partly liberating love to nature that Nina Sergejewna finds on her everyday walks, is so clever composed. Ausgeleiert, nein abgestanden, etwas gammelig ist die Beziehung von Chloe und Rasmus. Fast zwanzig Jahre sind sie verheiratet und einander irgendwie schon noch wichtig. Chloe wollte aber ihr Leben einem Mann mit Karriere widmen, die von Rasmus versickert grade total, zu sagen haben sie sich nichts und den unbefriedigenden Sex gibt's nur noch wenn Rasmus volle Blase ihn mit einer Erektion aufweckt. Chloe wird abgeholfen, von Masseur Benny. Dass ich etwas mit dem Inhaltsabriss lese liegt nur daran, dass Sibylle Berg drauf steht. Der Roman ist abwechselnd aus der Sicht der beiden Hauptcharakteren geschrieben und richtet sich auf die Beziehung und die Zukunft nebeneinander. Die zwei waren für mich interessant durch ihre vielschichtige und auch bedenkliche Haltung. Je mehr sich die Lage für Rasmus verschlechtert, Chloe lässt ihre Urlaubsaffäre Benny in der gemeinsamen Wohnung einziehen, desto mehr gerät er ins Philosophieren, manchmal mit nihilistischen Zügen. Sexuell wird sein Horizont zwar kurz erweitert, aber seine Einstellung, sein schlechtes Frauenbild scheinen sich trotz allem nicht zu ändern, und auch Chloe macht keine innere positive Entwicklung durch, aber wer erwartet das bei Sibylle Berg? Bergs ganz eigenem, wunderbaren Ausdruck werde ich mich nie entziehen können. Einer Art Derbheit und zynischem Witz im ganzen Versinken des gesellschaftlichen Daseins. In Kapiteln wie dem namens "Rasmus denkt auch kurz über soziale Missstände nach". Am Schluss fand ich den Dreher großartig, als Benny erstmals zu Wort kommt und ich plötzlich merkte, wie ich in die ichfixierten, unaufgehaltenen Gedankenbahnen von Rasmus und Chloe abgetaucht war, so dass ich den durchaus fühlenden Benny auch fast als Objekt wahrgenommen habe, wie Chloe selbst. Literatur halt.
