A prompt maybe? If you're interested? Kara loves seeing the spectacle that are the fireworks on NYE but she's never watched them live because of the noise they make. She mentions that to Lena one time so Lena takes her to a private island and she has some boats set up with noiseless fireworks that makes a show just for the two them. That's also when Lena planned to confess her feelings for Kara, but she gets a surprise of her own because Kara does the same. I hope you have a wonderful 2020!
Happy New Year!! I changed a couple of minor details from this prompt but I hope you enjoy it anyway. Thanks for the prompt!
---
Lena asks Kara what she’s doing for New Year’s Eve and surprised when Kara gives her a non-commital answer, something sad and unsure in her expression that Lena can’t quite place.
This is Kara, who somehow convinced her to dress up for Halloween and excitedly went costume shopping with her. Kara, who invited her for Thanksgiving dinner, exclaiming that she couldn’t be alone on the holiday and then put on the biggest family meal Lena had ever seen. Kara, who had Christmas decorations up on the first of December, a Menorah on her table, and insisted Lena be included in every holiday tradition they have, including ugly sweaters and lighting the Menorah each night.
New Year’s isn’t a big holiday but she expected Kara to celebrate it, with friends and family, party and all.
She finds out two days before New Year’s why, thanks to Alex.
Fireworks.
Kara would love to spend it with family, but the fireworks are always too loud, the celebrating city too much for Kara’s hearing. She used to go to Midvale, where it was quieter, but the last couple of years she’s camped out at the DEO with Alex for the night, spending the new year tucked away in a small lead lined room, perfect for blocking out the sounds of the city but not good for celebrating.
Lena starts planning right away.
Lena invites Kara to spend New Year’s Eve at her family’s cabin, one that Lionel loved but Lillian hated. Kara is hesitant, until Lena tells her it’s in the middle of nowhere, no people around and no noise. Lena’s quiet “Alex told me” clears up the confusion on Kara’s face.
The cabin is quiet, just as Lena promised, the blanket of snow dampening even the sounds of nature. It’s the perfect place to spend New Year’s, best friend and all.
Kara tells her as much and Lena can’t stop smiling.
They cook smores together over the fire in the cabin, they curl up on the couch and watch what Kara calls her “favourite New Year’s movies”, they have fun in their own little bubble, away from the rest of the world.
It really is the perfect day, and Lena doesn’t miss the fact that it’s also the perfect opportunity to tell Kara how she feels. A lot of moments have felt good, but she always has excuses, distractions, worries, and she keeps putting it off, fear getting the better of her. But with Kara smiling at her across the table as they play cards, some of the fear vanishes.
“Can I show you something?” Lena asks, as midnight draws near. Lena knows that Kara loves fireworks, but she’s never gotten to see them live, only glimpsed through a screen, the noise too overwhelming for her senses.
So, she’s prepared a surprise.
They don their coats, or at least Lena does, before she leads Kara outside. Kara realises what Lena is setting up, tries to stop her before Lena places a gentle hand over her arm.
“Trust me?”
Kara nods.
They stand on the porch together, Lena slipping her hand into Kara’s as they start their own countdown.
Kara’s hand tenses in her own when they hit “one”, but when light bursts in the sky above them, there’s no sound to accompany it
This whole trip is worth it, when she looks to the side and sees the pure awe on Kara’s face.
“Happy New Year,” Lena says quietly.
“Happy New Year,” Kara says as soundless fireworks still burst above their heads. “You did this, for me?”
Lena smiles, gives Kara’s hand a squeeze. “I’d do anything for you.”
Kara looks at her with such fond affection that the words she’s been holding back for so long are on the tip of her tongue. Except she shivers, the cold air getting to her before she can.
“Shoot, you’re cold.” Kara drops her hand in favour of wrapping an arm around her. “We should get you inside.”
Lena could easily let herself be dragged inside, easily use the weather as an excuse not to say anything, could easily let this opportunity pass her by.
But not this time. It’s a new year, and she wants to start it being less afraid, wants to start it by being honest with her best friend.
“I’m fine,” Lena says. She nestles more into Kara’s warmth. “We haven’t finished watching the fireworks yet.”
They’re beautiful above them, the lights illuminating the surrounding woods, and white snow. The whole scene is beautiful but nothing compares to the woman at her side.
“I love you,” Kara says. The words are quiet, but easily heard in their quiet surroundings.
“I love you, too,” Lena says from where she’s tucked into Kara’s side.
Lena’s not sure, but she thinks she feels Kara’s lips brush against her hair as she pulls away. She’s definitely cold now that she’s not in Kara’s embrace.
This is it, she should tell Kara how she feels before they go inside, before she finds some other excuse or chickens out.
Kara takes a deep breath before Lena gets a chance. “I mean I’m in love with you.”
Lena’s mouth drops open.
“And before you say anything, I want you to know that my feelings for you change nothing if you don’t want them too. We can stay friends, if that’s all you want, or, when we get back to the city, I could take you out on a date. Whatever happens, it’s your choice, I just wanted to start the new year right, I wanted to be honest and tell you how I feel about you, how I’ve felt for a really long time. I love you, Lena Luthor.”
Lena laughs, she doesn’t mean to, but the light feeling just bubbles through her chest and escapes her mouth.
There’s an immediate crinkle in between Kara’s eyebrows. Lena reaches out and soothes it.
“I planned to tell you the exact same thing tonight but you beat me too it.”
Kara’s eyes widen. “Does that mean…?”
“It means I’d love to go out with you.” Lena uses the courage she feels from Kara’s words to wrap her arms around Kara’s neck. “It means I’m in love with you too.”
Kara’s smiling now too. “Alex told me friends don’t usually invite their friends to spend new year’s alone with them in a cabin in the middle of the woods. She told me you were doing all of this because you liked me. I reasoned that you were just doing it because of my super hearing. I’m glad she was right.”
Lena cups her cheek, so warm to touch. “My only motivation behind this trip was because I wanted you to be able to experience a normal new year’s, I wanted you to be comfortable and have fun. I did all of this because I care about you and because you deserve to be happy.”
“You make me happy. I don’t need any of this, all I want is you. But thank you.” Kara cups the hand on her cheek. “I’ve had the best day here and I’m glad I got to spend it with you. This is, by far, the best new year’s I’ve ever had.”
Lena swallows against the emotions rising in her. She expected to confess her feelings to Kara, but she didn’t expect any of this.
“Can we make this a tradition?” Kara asks. “Can we come here each New Year’s and spend it together, just the two of us?”
Lena smiles. “Whatever you want.”
“What about what you want?”
“I’d love nothing more than to spend new year’s here with you again next year, and every year after that.”
“Then it’s settled.” Kara turns her head and presses a kiss to Lena’s palm. “But speaking of tradition, isn’t it tradition to kiss someone at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Day too?”
“It is.” Lena’s heart starts beating really fast. “But it’s after midnight. Are you saying you want to kiss me?”
Even in the dark, Lena can see Kara’s blush as she stammers, confident one minute then nervous the next.
Lena puts her out of her misery. “Because I definitely want to kiss you.”
Kara grins. “Ten, nine, eight…” she starts, Lena realisng what she’s doing instantly.
Lena joins in and then as ‘midnight’ hits, she whispers “Happy New Year,” again, this time the words said into Kara’s mouth.
When Lena starts to shiver again, Kara pulls her inside, their lips never parting as she does.
They fall asleep curled up together in front of the fire, Lena wrapped in Kara’s arms.
Lena invents headphones for Kara to wear the next year so she can join in on the celebrations with her family in National City. The smile on Kara’s face as she gets to share the day with her friends and family is worth the sacrifice of alone time with Kara.
But then the 1st of January every year, they go away to the cabin together, spend a few days alone, a much deserved break for just the two of them to spend time together.
It’s the place where, a couple of years later, Kara asks Lena to marry her.
Lena of course says yes.
