Cambridge defines a hammer as “a tool consisting of a piece of metal with a flat end that is fixed onto the end of a long, thin, usually wooden handle, used for hitting things”.

The goal was to recreate an object and make it uncomfortably inconvenient. In my case, I elaborated on my previous experiment of a rope-handled-hammer, redesigning it to have a glass head. With inspiration from Katerina Kamprani’s still models, as well as the visual effects of Lawson Deming, while still considering the concept of the erasure of functionality I developed the short animation that challenges the definition of a functioning hammer.

The work of Katerina Kamprani was my main inspiration for the project, “Overturning the traditional design language and conceptual models of our domestic reality, they challenge our expectations of functionality, leading to an appreciation for the conventional through faulty design”

 Elaborating from my previous experiment of the model of a useless hammer, I created a very similar model using Maya to do the hard-surface modelling and detailing. Then, I exported the model to Cinema4D to complete the texturing and the overall motion element of the simulation prior to completing the final touches in Adobe AfterEffects, such as the colour correction, audio and motion blur.

Initally, I wanted to make a series of useless objects that challenge the purpose and function of objects, however, I decided to focus on just one object and erase the whole concept altogether, which is how I decided to make the nail hit that hammer rather than the other way around.
